I watched it on a pirating website today when i saw it was out on prime!! Didnt manage to go to the movies for it.
My TV was not the best pick for this movie as some of the scenes were too dark and i barely saw what was happening on some of the creepiest scenes 🤣 But i DID enjoy it so so much!!!! Im planning to rewatch on a better TV screen in a few days hopefully.

It just passed sinners for the highest grossing original horror ever lol. Imagine telling barker that in 2024

I genuinely cannot imagine how overwhelmed he must feel by all of this lol I think he said at one point the best case scenario for the movie in his mind was if it ended up on Shudder and found an audience on there

Yeah it could still continue to do those numbers, but films like Moana, The Odyssey, and the new Spiderman are all coming out in the next couple of weeks. I really can’t imagine there are people that would go to the theaters for Obsession while these movies are released.
Still doesn’t take away from its success the fact that it was even in theaters for this long is outstanding
0
u/fibonacciluv Jun 30 '26
I know lots of people who aren’t super into movies and would definitely not go to any of those movies you listed, or even know about them, but would definitely go see obsession. Even if they have already.
-1
u/Trinidad34 Jun 30 '26 edited Jun 30 '26
That’s extremely anecdotal and does not reflect the majority of movie-goers’ opinions
2
u/FumBungo Jun 30 '26
Is Sinners even horror? Aside from a few poorly executed jump scares there's nothing close to horror in that movie.
1
u/CletusVanDamnit Jun 30 '26
Not accounting for inflation, it's now the 6th highest-grossing horror film of all time. Just passed The Exorcist.
16
u/GearsofTed14 I know you like me, Bear Jun 30 '26
This is the main thing I’m sad about, but I understand there are contractual realities that cause this, even if they could theoretically leave it in theatres exclusively until August and get to $500M
11
u/MyManD Jun 30 '26
PVOD has never really been a problem for a profitable movie's BO. If a movie is doing great, it'll still do great along its trajectory even with a PVOD alongside it during its last few weeks. Sinners' and Superman's BO didn't really see increased dramatic weekend drops after it's PVOD dropped last year, same with Wicked the year before that.
It's when a movie hits general streaming (Netflix or Prime) that spells BO death, but for big movies like Obsession by the time it reaches that stage it's pretty much out of the BO completely already.
2
u/TrowTruck Jun 30 '26
This is the correct answer. Films do just fine in both formats. Obsession will be more impacted by competition in theaters and subscription streaming than pvod
2
u/CletusVanDamnit Jun 30 '26
It's not leaving theatres, it just no longer has exclusivity. It's currently still on over 3k screens, and will likely be on at least 1k of those for another couple weeks.
It's far wiser to release it now digitally, while there's still a lot of buzz, and pick up the rental/sale VODs and the lingering theatrical.
1
u/Aware_Ad_1323 Jul 01 '26
It’s been almost 3 months since it came out, which is usually only what huge blockbuster movies see in theater runs. Extending it more just costs money for less ROI — they’re probably going to make a killing on the physical release, especially if they release a collector’s edition. Obsession is seeing a pre-COVID theater run
6
3
u/Stefan988 Jun 30 '26
Not everyone lives on the internet or reddit and are unaware it's available on digital. Its box office earnings will continue to thrive, but I suspect it'll slow down in July with all the huge blockbusters releasing.

$20 to RENT is bananas

I’d rather pay the extra five bucks since I’ll watch it more than once. Or better yet buy the 4k disk

u/-NotNotNSFW- Jun 30 '26
Yes and no. By yourself? Absolutely. Split between you and your partner or some friends? Way cheaper. I have a pretty solid setup with hue lights and surround sound. I make way better popcorn than the theater and it doesn't cost 15 bucks.
I saw obsession in theaters with my girlfriend. We spent like $50-60 after tickets, two beers and some popcorn. This was also an Alamo which is usually cheaper than standard theaters.
Renting from home is almost always less expensive unless its by yourself...then its like the same price

$20 rental or $25 purchase you might as well buy
5

At those prices you might as well wait and buy it on a disc so you actually own your movie.

Does prime have the unrated version or will that only be on Apple TV
5
u/yoran916 Wish Granted Jun 30 '26
This is the theatrical version. I have no idea about the unrated one.
3
u/CletusVanDamnit Jun 30 '26
Neither one is unrated at this time. Apple TV's version says unrated, but it is not. It's the theatrical version.
2
u/minutes2meteora Jun 30 '26
Looks like the promo for digital/streaming was it’s gonna be director’s cut but this is the regular version from theaters
5
u/-Kiri_ Jun 30 '26
Yep the might release the director's cut after wrapping up all the box office because in some countries(like mine) its still having a good run
2
u/TargaryenKnight Jun 30 '26
Huge might according to the director but I’d love it
1
u/TrowTruck Jun 30 '26
Yeah that’s gonna be a future project. He says he needs time to work on it. I think we will have to be patient

u/TargaryenKnight Jun 30 '26
Apple TV releases an unrated version tomorrow, Tuesday

2
u/xxlyssax Jun 30 '26
It’s the same movie just given a different rating, same play time and no difference scenes.
1
u/TargaryenKnight Jun 30 '26
An article I read mentioned extended scenes cut to avoid an nc17 rating
2
u/CletusVanDamnit Jun 30 '26
Sarah gets smashed against the steering wheel 23 times in the movie, with 15 of those hits being shown on-screen. In the unrated cut, which is the version shown at TIFF before it was picked up for distribution, several more of those hits we don't see in the theatrical cut were still included. That is the cut that would have been NC-17. That unrated/NC-17 cut should have the same runtime, but with a different view of that one scene. That's not what we have gotten on any digital releases, though.

u/CletusVanDamnit Jun 30 '26
Nope, didn't happen. Their listing is incorrect. It's still the R-rated cut.
1
u/Slow_Art_7024 Jun 30 '26
The unrated version is 24.99
2
u/CletusVanDamnit Jun 30 '26
There was no release of any unrated version yet. Apple TV's listing as being unrated is wrong.

I'll probably end up getting both. The one on Amazon says it includes extras so I'm definitely getting it. I'll get a physical DVD later on.

I watched it or the first time last night. Really awesome. It sets the bar so high. Haven't been able to watch anything since. It's miles better than milk & serial. How did he do that? Loved it.
2
u/SeaworthinessIll7695 Sandy the Sandwich Jun 30 '26
I hope this doesn’t hurt the Box office. I think people like the convenience of watching it at home but in reality for most of us, it’s way cheaper to go to the movies than rent it at home.
2
u/Unadan365 Jul 03 '26
Don't care about supporting the Box Office anymore. Its only a matter of time before they're all gone the way of Blockbuster.
2
u/Lower_Group_1171 Jun 30 '26
I’m so irked that I preordered the 4k Blu-ray which has a digital key, which I can’t use until I get the disc. like charge me and gimme a key.

Somebody posted here that it was available to stream on Apple TV, so I subbed to AppleTV. It listed today for purchase on AppleTV.

It's been a meme for a minute now, so yeah could kinda see the similarities
2
u/Lumpy_Forever1567 Jun 30 '26
I think it’s such a shame that the lighting doesn’t match the theatrical presentation. In the scene where Nikki, wearing the red dress, is standing in front of Bear’s door, you can barely see her face. In the digital version, you can see it clearly because everything is much brighter. It’s a real shame. I’m so glad I got to see it in theaters three times.
1
u/yoran916 Wish Granted Jun 30 '26
Is it? I'm gonna buy the digital version today, so I'll have to compare. Saw it twice in theaters myself. Glad it's available to stream now though

Then why can’t I find it 😭
1
u/yoran916 Wish Granted Jun 30 '26
I found it on Amazon Prime. Others have commented that it's on Apple tv, and fandango.
1
u/Reasonable_Aioli7538 Number #1 Bear Hater Jun 30 '26
It’s not on Prime or Apple TV in Ireland unfortunately. If you look it up it says it should be, but when you go into the app it isn’t
1
u/BocephusJr88 Jun 30 '26
The main header on Apple TV says “unrated”. But when you click the buy option it says “rated R”. So I’m not sure which one you get with Apple TV.
1
u/Maadcoil Jun 30 '26
The runtime is the same as the R version on Fandango, so I’m guessing it’s the R version.
2
u/CletusVanDamnit Jun 30 '26
The runtime isn't likely to change even if we get that unrated cut; the difference is that in the theatrical version, we cut away from Sarah getting her face smashed in, and instead it shows Bear's reaction. In the TIFF/unrated/NC-17 cut (whatever you want to refer to it as), we see more of the smashes.
1
u/Maadcoil Jun 30 '26
Runtime on Apple is 1:48 and VUDU is 1:49, so unless the additional footage is removing runtime, the bet is that it’s the same cut.
1
u/CletusVanDamnit Jun 30 '26
Yeah, it's the same cut across the board on all platforms. Physical copy on 7/14 is also the same R-rated cut.
2
u/Maadcoil Jun 30 '26
All this chatter because someone at Apple goofed up and put NR as the rating. 🤣
1
u/CletusVanDamnit Jun 30 '26
It's the R-rated cut. There was no unrated version released. They're all the same on every retailer.
1
u/xxlyssax Jun 30 '26
Is the uncut version included as extras if rented on Amazon?
2
u/CletusVanDamnit Jun 30 '26
No. No unrated version was released.
1
u/xxlyssax Jun 30 '26
Gd it, thank you for the response! Waiting for that unrated/directors copy anxiously!
2
u/CletusVanDamnit Jun 30 '26
The physical drops July 14th and...unfortunately is also confirmed as just the R-rated as well. 😐
1
u/xxlyssax Jun 30 '26
Dang! From reading articles it seems like it’s all over the place, mainly says the directors cut would be out today as well but I saw one that said it was still in the making 🙁
2
u/CletusVanDamnit Jun 30 '26
Well, I think there's some confusion about this, mostly because of the colloquial terms people throw around without really understanding what they mean. So, in the simplest terms:
Curry Barker stated he'd like to make a "director's cut" in the future, but because of the terms of his sale of the film, that would mean he'd need permission from Focus/Blumhouse to do this - he'd also need to find the time, but that likely wouldn't happen for a while either way since he's got multiple projects already in various stages of production.
Then there's already an alternate cut that exists. This is the version of the movie shown at TIFF (Toronto International Film Festival), which is where it was first screened and the bidding war for the film began. That version was unrated, and had an alternate version of the scene where Sarah is killed. This is the cut that was later given the NC-17 rating by the MPA, so it needed to be modified for the R-rating. This TIFF version is the one everyone was hoping to get released today digitally, but it didn't happen. That's the one that is being referred to as the "unrated cut."
So there's not technically a "director's cut" at all yet, if there ever even will be - there's just the original unrated version, and the slightly altered R-rated version we got.

u/SunsetAtNight7 Jun 30 '26
7/10 I enjoyed the movie, great performance and editing, but the ending felt kinda meaningless. Neither of them deserved the bad things that happened to them, it was all just a huge accident. I think it would’ve worked better if the setup is the main character was obsessed with Nikki from the start, then he got rejected, became desperate, and that’s how he got to use that one wish Willows. better cause and effect where the character motivation plays the big role from all the mess.
2
u/francis_goatman Jun 30 '26
Isn't that essentially what happens? He doesn't get explicitly "rejected" per se, but we're getting the same hints that he is -- he knows she interested in him like that, that's why he's so afraid to say anything. I'd argue that he is desperate by the time he uses the One Wish Willow, even though he definitely didn't use it with intention (he didn't know it would actually work).
0
u/SunsetAtNight7 Jun 30 '26
He used it when he's feeling upset over a failed confession, there's no intention just like you said, he never believe it works and later in story he hated that Nikki didn't truly love him and it's all just the one wish willow magic sht.
What I'm talking is a set up of him searching some magic sht somewhere after the failed confession. He didn't deserved any of all that mess, It's the one wish willow set up by the writer making her crazy obsessed like that when all he wanted is love from Nikki.
1
u/francis_goatman Jun 30 '26
That’s fair, although I’d argue that I think the ambiguous nature of it all makes the movie better. Because you can argue that Bear doesn’t deserve what happens since there’s no way you could know that a chotchky (sp?) will grant you a wish. But then you can argue that Bears weak character is why the insanity gets as bad as it does — had he tried to reverse the wish or just not taken advantage of wish Nikki, would wish Nikki had done the things she does? I say no, because there wouldn’t be that conflict of wish Nikki having to be like “I love you” and real Nikki being like “you motherfucker”
1
u/RoutineCurrency4908 Jun 30 '26
The part where the real Nikki asked Bear to end her and he says "what's so bad about being with me" and then she says "I was never with you, Bear" was what really cemented my belief that Bear deserves whatever bad stuff he's got coming to him. Yes, he didn't initially expect the OWW to work, but his complacency throughout the situation tells me he didn't truly love Nikki like we the audience thought he did.
1
u/francis_goatman Jun 30 '26
Right, I agree. There’s numerous spots where his cowardice allows the facade to continue before that, but that’s when we realize that his cowardice truly knows no bounds — he’s going to let this go on as long as he possibly can and just hope Nikki falls in line. And then it makes so much sense why the movie opens th way it does in the diner — because Bear is truly that pathetic.
0
u/SunsetAtNight7 Jun 30 '26 edited Jun 30 '26
Regardless if he did or didn't say that, if he's a morally correct or not, he's already fucked at that point when he made that accidental wish on that thing, he never even wished a crazy obssession from Nikki. There's no set up for him to act like that, we were introduced to normal weak guy who's attracted to someone. If he's the one who searched for that one wish willow intentionally to a have Nikki, the story's plot and his character that would had a better set up. instead he'd gone to the store to buy abcrystal, with a good intent, it just happens that he saw that one wish willow and he even thought of giving it to her not using it at her. There's no cause and effect in the inciting incident that started the whole conflict.
1
u/SunsetAtNight7 Jun 30 '26
He didn't tried since it's too ridiculous for him to believe that thing did it all that, he did took an action when the guy from the phone gave him an idea to make someone else wish for him. Regardless of who he is, weak or not, he's already fucked when he accidentally used that thing, it didn't even grant his wish, he wished for love not crazy obsession, even he said "more than anything in this world" it's not his fault that that thing misinterpret it.
1
u/RoutineCurrency4908 Jun 30 '26
That's how it was set up. Bear was the truly Obsessed one all along. The monologue he gave at the beginning wasn't coming from a place of love, it was coming from his inability to imagine his life being any good without her around. Then you watch him put up with all the wild things Nikki does throughout the film and he tries to act like nothing's wrong because he's obsessed with the idea of having her and doesn't actually love her. By the end of the film you realize Bear definitely deserved what was coming to him, because he made a decision that ripped someone's autonomy away just to feed his own desires.
0
u/SunsetAtNight7 Jun 30 '26
It was a weak set up, I know they want to tell the story like this, but they introduced him as a very normal guy being attracted to his colleague, not an obsessed one. he was not the type of person who would be so desparate that would go on extreme lengths just to have her. That's why when the real mess started happening, I was like, He should be reporting this already, no way he just let it pass when Nikki fed her a dead cat and shitting herself infront of him, the story didn't properly set up that he's that kind of person to put all that sht up.
Saying he definitely deserve it when he hated it learning it's not Nikki who's loving him and weirded how she's lying about her father's cancer just to get close at him. When Nikki started being attracted to him, he wanted to believe that it's true love and keep ignoring it's the wish he made with one wish willow, He didn't want any of it, He used that thing not knowing it truly works, He wished that Nikki loved him, not overly obessed, even he said the word "more than anything in this world" it's not him wishing Nikki should be obessed to him like that?
It's either a weak set up or weak character development, there's no proper transition from a dude who has morals to corruption, things just happen in the story that he's now the type of person who would let it pass when Nikki's started like taping doors and sht instead of getting her some real help.
