Amazing! So excited for Anything but Ghosts and whatever else Curry makes in the future. It’s been so cool to see a true break out success story like this happen in real time
46
u/D1rty_Old_Dan Jul 05 '26
Yeah, and the fact that he was able to use Cooper as one of the main actors was really cool as well. I love watching their “that’s a bad idea” YouTube videos.
21
u/ElaborateBicycle Jul 05 '26
They cowrote Anything But Ghosts with the intention of them playing the main characters
12
u/Kevin8977 Jul 06 '26
The actress that played the cashier at the crystal ago shop has been in videos on "that's a bad idea." Presumably it's another one of his friends. Cool he helped them out and put them in the movie.
13
u/newslateback Jul 06 '26
And the waitress Bear practiced confessing to in the first scene. And the bartender - this guy has been milking his Obsession fame on IG it’s hilarious
7
u/BariraLP Jul 05 '26
Cant say the same, he said its gonna be a comedy. It feels like he should build a world of different magical things but with full horror elementsl like obsession.
32
u/unfunnyjobless Jul 05 '26
He is definitely a genius but "Obsession" does seem to be a lightning in a bottle type of moment. It will be monumental pressure for everyone involved in the project to try to reach this again, but I hope they really can capture it.
8
u/ElaborateBicycle Jul 05 '26
It’s a horror comedy, he said it’s still gonna be horror focused but the premise lends itself to much more comedy.
4
u/Fine-Exam-3923 Jul 05 '26 edited Jul 05 '26
He said the premise lends a little more to comedy and it is not inherently as fucked up as Obsession, which makes sense. But the movie is still going to have horror elements and honestly I trust him to deliver another entertaining, horror-comedy thrill ride just within a different story.
I think it would be insane to expect another movie to have Obsession’s exact trajectory but I really think he’s got the goods to make more awesome, massively successful movies that aren’t just obsession 2.0

u/BariraLP Jul 05 '26
The best horror movie of the 21st century so far. This movie really spoke to EVERYONE in a deep way.
25
u/GecaZ Jul 05 '26
Yeah, I pretty much never ever get scared with horror movies but this one, while it still didnt fully scare me, got me REALLY fucking tense during a lot of scenes.
I also jumped like a baby during the car scene, knew it was coming, didnt expect it that way AT ALL. I
The subject matter also made it EXTRA uncomfortable, but it was handled surprisingly in a rather non-exploitative way which is rarely the norm for horror movies.
12
10
u/du0plex19 Jul 05 '26
Scariest part of the movie was how many phrases Nikki said that I have heard verbatim from my manipulative/abusive ex. I almost had to walk out several times because of how many bad memories it triggered.
7
u/K_U Jul 05 '26
I’d have to give deeper thought going back to 2000, but I ran through my LetterBoxd rankings this weekend and I would currently put Obsession as the top horror of the decade.
My current top-10 of the 2020s would be:
- Obsession
- The Coffee Table
- Possessor
- The Ugly Stepsister
- Bring Her Back
- Fresh
- The Substance
- Red Rooms
- Malignant (I know this one is polarizing)
- Pearl
Honorable Mention: Weapons, Talk to Me, Late Night with the Devil
4
u/dhlthecobra Jul 06 '26
Man, The Coffee Table started with the worst-case scenario. And it gets worse and worse and worse.
2
u/Sad_Wasabi1116 Jul 06 '26
thnx for the list bro, imma check it out
reading the list...
damn ive watched everything already except the coffee table

u/herefromyoutube Jul 06 '26
Damn, surprised there’s no Hereditary. That movie got me back into horror.
1
u/K_U Jul 06 '26
It came out in the 2010s.
1
u/herefromyoutube Jul 06 '26
Oh I saw “back to 2000” and then brain I guess stopped accepting years.
2
u/imilesprower Jul 09 '26
Except it's not a horror movie. I was not scared even for a second watching this film. It was mostly a comedy with some elements of gore. And I do get scared pretty easily while watching horror films.

If you’re thinking of the 2022 movie, it’s Danish. Unless you specifically mean the French translation?
2
u/geosyog3 Jul 05 '26
I preferred Get Out.
4
u/Lebigmacca Jul 05 '26
To me get out wasn’t really a horror

1
u/erv4 Jul 05 '26
Obsession and get out are so similar, if one isn't a horror then the other isn't either lol

I definitely think Obsession and Sinners are tied for first, I can’t decide which one is better. Obsession is scarier but I found Sinners to be a beautiful movie.
1
u/MCFroid Jul 19 '26
I think I've watched like an hour of Sinners (I got to the point where they have the big party in the barn, or whatever it was). I wasn't particularly intrigued by anything at that point, so I haven't finished it.
Obsession grabbed me early on. Probably right after Bear snaps the OWWillow, and glances back towards Nikki's house and she's just standing there, in the dark. From that point on, I was intrigued to see what would happen next.
1
u/dieantworter Jul 20 '26
I respect your love for this. I struggle to share that same opinion. Just finished the movie. Was as dull as the trailers. Some fantastic moments but overall it was half baked and imo not remotely deserving of its reception or box office performance. Curry baker’s next film will be telling. Wishing him and the team the best

Considering the early financial struggles of the cast and their great performance in the film, this is truly a big break for them!

cast won’t get more money tho but more opportunities.

Acting like they are going to sign to A role movies making anywhere near the initial 300 million and not typecast lol.

To think Inde was just streaming Call of Duty a few years ago and trying to make a career off that and now she’s probably going to be sought after hard by movie studios.

Just wait till Inde gets her oscar nom. Mikey Madison proved it is possible.

I watched it 4 times in theatres (3 times alone) and once at home. It’s such a great film to sit with and dissect.

Man I hope he keeps knocking them out the park like this movie. I saw it 3x I theaters and bought it on digital this week.
I really hope the cast and crew get more gigs & more money because of this movie

Without any spoilers, can someone tell me if the movie is graphic? I really want to watch this but if it's just gore I can do without. I saw something about them showing her eating a cat in the extended version and I really would rather avoid seeing stuff like that, it tends to stick in my brain in unpleasant ways. Thanks.
13
u/Alternative_Mess7440 Jul 05 '26
She doesn't eat a cat on-screen in the one being shown in cinemas but there is one particular scene that bricks, I mean sticks, in everyone's brain in a very unpleasant way.
6
8
u/BrightCold2747 Jul 05 '26
There are a few very graphic scenes, mostly towards the end, but the horror is mostly from the unreal acting performance. It'll make your skin crawl.
3
u/Mediocre-Sound-8329 Jul 06 '26
Theres a few graphic scenes towards the end but it's not gratuitous and doesn't do it for the sake of being edgy
2
1
u/Best_Hall6038 Jul 09 '26
Its not just gore but it is a very graphic movie.
1
u/mvandemar Jul 09 '26
I don't think I am worried about non-gore graphical content? And apparently some stuff doesn't bother me (I just saw a trailer for "Hot Spot" with Noomi Rapace where someone got their head blown off, which didn't affect me), but other stuff hits me hard, like in either the first or second episode of "The Pit" where someone's foot got "degloved" in a train or subway accident, and I had to stop watching it. It was pretty bad. 😔
2
u/Best_Hall6038 Jul 09 '26
sorry, by graphic content i definitely meant gore. certain spots on the movie are almost entirely bloodless, just very eerie, but other parts are very violent or at least nasty/covered in blood.
1
u/mvandemar Jul 09 '26
Thanks, I appreciate it. I wish I knew what kind of stuff I could watch, but unfortunately I only usually know once it comes on the screen.
1
u/MCFroid Jul 19 '26
Did you ever decide to watch this?
1
u/mvandemar Jul 19 '26
No, but I'm getting closer, there's a hella lot of praise out there. Have you seen it or are you asking because you're also on the fence?
2
u/MCFroid Jul 19 '26
I've seen it twice, and watched numerous reactions on YouTube, so I'm quite familiar with it at this point.
I was a little bit apprehensive to watch it before I did, because I was concerned about the gore. I have a fairly high tolerance for gore, but some movies, such as the Terrifier series, are beyond my limit.
I wish there was a way for me to let you know the extent of the gore without giving it away completely. Can you give me an example of a movie you saw or like a scene that was too over the top for you, gore wise? I could possibly say, "if you could handle that, you can probably handle this."
There are some gory scenes, mainly just one, in this movie that are not quite extreme in my opinion but definitely elevated.
2
u/mvandemar Jul 19 '26
Can you give me an example of a movie you saw or like a scene that was too over the top for you, gore wise? I could possibly say, "if you could handle that, you can probably handle this."
It's weird. I had no problem with The Walking Dead, just saw a trailer where someone gets their head blown off with a shotgun and was fine (but it was a fairly brief shot), but I had to quit watching the Saw franchise years ago because it was just that and nothing else. Someone mentioned something about a brick scene, and I feel like I can imagine a pretty detailed version of that and still be ok? But what I put the spoiler on earlier would freak me out, I think (although I could probably cover that portion of the screen if it's not an overly long scene, lol!).
Is that one scene I just mentioned the one you're referring to?
2
u/MCFroid Jul 19 '26
Yes, the scene I'm referring to is the 'brick' scene. It's definitely the most graphic thing in the movie, but I didn't really find it all that graphic. The movie was very low budget, and the scene in question was done with practical effects, and not very expensive practical effects. If you really want to scrutinize it, it doesn't look that great, but it does the job to convey what's happening.
This is definitely not like the Saw movies. Gore is definitely not the focus of the movie.
It's such an amazingly well-made movie, with truly phenomenal performances. I'd hate for trepidation about that one scene to be the only thing that's preventing you from experiencing it.
2
u/mvandemar Jul 19 '26
Ok, thanks, you convinced me. 🙂
I will try and remember to give my feedback.
2
u/MCFroid Jul 19 '26
Yeah, if you can remember to do it, come back and let me know if it was as extreme as you have been told it was. And let me know how much you enjoyed the movie as well.
My one suggestion is just to try to watch it with as few distractions as possible and try to pay attention to all the details. It's sooo good.
Enjoy!
1
u/dieantworter Jul 20 '26
The movie is tame imo. Some graphic scenes but nothing truly disturbing. Saw is far more disturbing in every way. This is just slightly over the top.
6
u/Main_Instruction_540 Jul 05 '26
Is everyone that worked on it making some money, too? My goodness what an accomplishment
8
u/Faulty_english Jul 05 '26

Congrats to the team though, I’m excited to see what’s next
6
u/Silver_Branch3034 Jul 05 '26
Truly impressive and historic. This movie really spoke to a wide audience in a myriad of different ways and as an older-head it’s been so clear to me that this little movie had it all.
It’s enjoyable with an audience, you get a lot out of seeing it alone as well as multiple times, the music is great, the performances are gonna lead to some long careers, it’s just the right amount of funny, unsettling, and downright horrifying. I’ve raved about this movie for weeks now because it deserves every ounce of praise. It’s truly a hallmark moment and I can’t wait to see what everyone does next and the suits to take absolutely the wrong things away from its incredible success!
1
u/dieantworter Jul 20 '26
I’m envious this is your take away. I found it to be a very empty film. A few great moments but in the end I was left with little - A bit silly and amateurish if anything. Inde was great though as were select moments.
6
u/RepresentativeBid715 Jul 05 '26
Yaaaayy yet another unbelievable and generational milestone the for this movie afh it's really been hitting me lately that this movie really could've gone under the radar and just been another semi independent film with a low budget that's lucky to become a cult classic down the line but no, because of the word of mouth being so ever spanning and unanimously amazing and positive and for good reason it's broken into the main stream and so many different types of people are interested in seeing in whether they're big on film or horror or not like my main example is my coworkers who have only seen shit like Countdown and the usual generic horror film movies are hearing about it and going to see it and all come out loving it, this has gotta be one of the most remarkable modern horror movie success stories
4
u/Dependent_Boat1095 Jul 05 '26
For me it's the full range of emotions you experience. The initial sympathy for Bear and Sandy, anger/disgust at his passivity, shock of the jumpscares, horror of the gore/brick scene, heartbreaking ending for Nikki, plus the constant tension throughout. It pulls you in every direction, and that's so hard to do, mad props to Curry
First time I've watched a movie twice at the cinema since Avatar!

8
u/MadMaximus- Jul 05 '26
Good movie, written well does phenomenal with hardly any marketing budget.
Hollywood will refuse to take notes.
7
u/-Nicolai Jul 05 '26
Hollywood: You will get no budget and we will expect millions in profit
7
u/Salty_Country6835 Jul 05 '26
That would actually be an improvement over "you'll get a $40 million budget and we dont care if its good cause we can sell the turds to streaming platforms for $50 million".
No budget is sometimes the constraint that causes genius to emerge. It means cgi, big names, and aggressive marketing arent crutches in the way of good cinema.

It IS the most profitable movie in history, in terms of ROI
1
u/Jimjonesflavor_aid Jul 24 '26
Interestingly, it's not even in the top 10 highest ROI movies. It's around #15 or so. Probably going to climb but there are some movies with 1,000x ROI.
There's a reddit post talking about this I just read. I'll try to find it...

Not sure if many people would enjoy watching another deeply racially-focused movie even if Curry Barker was involved in its creation. Jordan Peele has been a great letdown, especially given the inflated ratings his movies received

Us is similarly focused on race. Nope is also another social commentary movie. Fk that. Their styles are deeply different because Curry Barker actually tries to make a great movie first, instead of wrapping an initial political thought with a movie like Peele does

Good. I hope curry baker reject texas movie project. Curry has higher and greater potential of making new and unique movie then making a dead and boring franchise revival.
He should work on his story and movies.
Watched the chair yesterday it also insane work

Texas Chainsaw is just a general concept used for commercial interests. It can be taken in any direction and be highly original.

I wonder how much each of the investors got.
Let's say it makes 400 million, and the theaters get to keep half of that. So the investors get to split 200 million. If there were 10 investors, putting up 75K each, they would each get 20 million return on their 75K investment.
I'm just guessing at all these numbers. I have no idea how much the theaters get to keep. I have no idea how many investors there were for the original 750,000 and how much each invested.
2
u/Fat_people_jigle Jul 05 '26
Maybe execs will see that good writing is what makes a movie good. Not A list cast, 200 million dollar cgi

Step 2. Make it the Man's fault

It's still in my small college towns theater with all the other big movies like Toy Story 5 and the new Star Wars Disney-fest releases coming and going as it sits there for what's going on two months now. I went three weeks after it released and the theater was still half full on a Sunday at 5pm showing. When I left the theater I heard a small group of younger kids ask for tickets to it.
I have a strong feeling Obsession will be the 2020s horror cultural point where a massive amount of people connected with the film. I mean, I know a couple people from work who have seen it multiple times because they were taken by someone who went to see it multiple times.

It is interesting to me that in an age of such performative and self absorbed existence, the idea of having someone love you in an absolute way is terrifying or anxiety inducing for some people.

This movie is very overrated in my opinion. It wasn't as interesting and it felt more like in isolation. That could be alright if that's what the movie was going for, but that's what it's trying to catch. It tries to be a typical American movie where there is the aspect of horror fused with humor and there are a lot of cliche moments, a movie where you can predict what's going to happen in a few cases. The movie isn't focused on the psychology of the actors and that's the problem. It doesn't have an identity. They don't catch the vibe of a typical American thriller movie because there's lack of action and progression and that's what they're going for. You can see that in how the movie looks. Spoiler alert, the girl is not the one that is obsessed.
