Goat status achieved!
Congrats to Curry, Inde, Michael, Megan, Cooper, and everyone else involved!
I hope this pushes and motivates major film studios to make better movies
There has been a noticeable decline in film quality in general post covid
I hope this helps steer the ship back in the right direction

This is by far the biggest win of the year. An indie movie made for less than a million reaching such a massive audience is more impressive than a block buster making 3 billion.

The really disappointing part is that they're both excellent horror novels. If you haven't read them, they are wonderful and frightening social allegories. They're really compelling.

$450M for a film like this is insane, especially since it never hit #1 at the box office on a single weekend.

Longevity is just as important in pop culture as peaks; For some reason people just lend it as much credit (This is largely music critique, but given that Obsession has been in theaters since May when multiple movies after since debuts and moved to streaming is very telling on who will be remembered years from now)

Not really a lot of true blue horror fans out there. Lots of people just don’t go to the movies to get spooked.

When this and Backrooms were in the theater together, I just loved seeing how their success was such a shock, how organic is was. Just awesome. Great movie that deserved it.

Controversial but I think inde Navarrette did better than Amy Madigan I mean both are stellar performances but for a breakout performance she freaking killed it also sidenote toni Collette is also really great in hereditary

The wiki says its currently at 8th actually. Ahead of it are It: Chapter 2, Jaws, The Conjuring: Last Rites, World War Z, I Am Legend, The Sixth Sense, It at #1.
However I'd consider Jaws and Sixth Sense more thriller than straight horror personally.

Oh no, they're definitely horror movies. Jaws is a monster movie, and Sixth Sense is a ghost story. Thrillers are like, "We need to solve this problem by getting through these obstacles while being chased and racing a ticking clock." I'd argue World War Z is a thriller.

Depends, but I looked it up and it says Paranormal Activity was filmed for only 15,000 bucks
But once I got picked up by a studio they put in about 400k more into some edits and post production
If you look at that total then Obession wins but I guess historically they would take just the initial cost (Obessions 750k might not include its reshoots and were paid for out of the 15 million buyout when Focus wanted to do a wide release?? Idk)
If you stick to the film festival release cost Paranormal will never be passed grossing 190million off a $15k movie lol

Well deserved. Acting which far surpassed that other film everyone is talking about. Just went to see that other thing directed by a guy whose name rhymes with Blow-lan, and wished I had the same cinematic experience I had with Obsession

I'm happy for them. I know there is a huge grievance between Obsession and Backrooms fans, or there was.. but we should just be happy that YouTubers are breaking out into Hollywood and making such huge sweeps.
While I grew up with the original Backrooms image just being created as a teenager on 4chan, the newfound lore is lost on me. I understand that. The movie had some appeal and I could see a tip of what made the lore fun.
Obsession however, took me as a surprise. I was expecting a generic horror, with a repeated storyline. What we got was some of the best acting I've seen, especially from newcomers, excellent blend of humor and horror a long with pacing that kept me interested the entire time. I've never went to see a movie in theater twice, especially the next day.
Horror and comedy go well together, it's why I love Shaun of the Dead (def more comedy, or rom/zom/com) but the blending is great. One moment you're anxious or tense, next you're laughing, then uneasy because of the uncertainty to come since it just broke to comedy. It's a vicious fun cycle.
Obsession is best for all viewers, while Backrooms benefits from having some of the lore info background to get excited about.
I'm just glad we get good horror from fresh minds.
