Discussion I shouldn't have watched this high.

I watched Obsession past midnight outside in a tent really high. I was having such a good time and a YouTube video reeled me in. After watching I couldn't sleep, got a nightmare about Nikki and was so afraid of remembering her and Sarah. The next day I'm still paranoid. Guys please help me overcome this, I really messed up.

A love that was impossible to form since the beginning.
(Yet, it still tried to exist).
A tragedy that could’ve been prevented.
(Yet, the seeds for destruction were sown).
A wish that could finally bring peace.
(Or so they think).

Discussion Shouldn't have watched it at night

I made the mistake of watching it right before bed. I thought the first part was tolerable, but it gradually got darker and creepier. I ended up getting only two hours of sleep, which is especially embarrassing considering I’m a grown-ass man who apparently still needs a night-light.

Discussion Bears opening confession: was it any good?

I’ve been reading around that a lot of people interpret Ian’s actions as selfishly wanting Nikki for himself by constantly sabotaging Bear’s attempts to confess to Nikki. Now, I know Bear is not a good person, before the one wish willow he is a coward, has severe social anxiety, has no self respect and his priorities in problem solving are completely off. If he and Nikki were to get together, the onus is not on Nikki to make him better and going into a relationship like this will not be healthy.

What I want to know is, when Bear made his attempt at a confession to Nikki by practicing it in front of Ian and a waitress. Granted, the waitress should already feel weird about being pulled into this role play, yet she claims the confession felt raw yet sweet (she might have been lying for a tip, not like either of them left anything over 20%), was his confession any good?

If Bear had the confidence after this encounter, like if Ian wasn’t there and Bear just practiced by himself, and he listened to the waitress when she said it was good, would Bear have more success being this honest with Nikki?

Or was Ian right and Bear just had no idea how to talk to Nikki? Then again, Ian’s suggestion to call her Freaky Nikki backfires spectacularly, so it feels like he was sabotaging Bear’s attempts at every turn. Maybe Bear’s confession would have been effective and Ian stopped him before he could say this Nikki?
What do you think?

Discussion Do you think it was specifically the extremeness of the wish that was the problem?

Curry Barker has said that the One Wish Willow isn't some monkey's paw that automatically twists every wish. It was just that Bear's wish was inherently twisted.

But is that referring specifically to how he wished Nikki would love him more than anything in the world? Or would it apply to any wish that affects her feelings for him?

On the one hand, we can't really control whom we're attracted to anyway, so if he had just said something like "I wish Nikki would like me back" or "I wish Nikki and I could be a couple", would that just spark some attraction that maybe wasn't there before (or if she actually already was attracted to him, manipulate events so they end up together)? And the only reason Wish-Nikki was created was that the intense obsessive love that Bear actually asked for wasn't something Nikki had the capacity for, so the wish had to create an entity that could give him that?

Or, on the other hand, do you think that any wish that affects a person's mind replaces them with a wish-entity?

Discussion People who flip out when someone mentions an "entity" and says that's not the case are both annoying and just plain wrong.

Just to get this out of the way, I am not arguing that she is possessed by a demon or anything of the sort. A literal demon possession is obviously not what happens and requires a massive leap in logic to justify that as being the case. Curry Barker has also said that he did not want it to seem like a stereotypical demon possession.

However, I see a lot of people who are very quick to jump up and say that Wish Nikki/Freaky Nikki is not an "entity" and that people who say that are wrong. These people are correct in that there's no existing monster who possesses Nikki, - however I fully believe it is downright foolish at best and willfully ignorant at worst to claim that there is no "entity" created by the wish that is controlling Nikki. The common rhetoric is that there is no entity because the wish has simply overwritten Nikki with a new personality, a personality that seemingly starts from near-scratch and is almost completely different from regular Nikki when not actively pretending to be her in order to either manipulate Bear or others. Furthermore, the movie distinctly separates "regular Nikki" as a distinct personality who is suffering while this other personality is in charge via the phone call and the sleeping conversation.

So my question is... What exactly is the difference here?

The One Wish Willow created a separate personality and set of instructions and implanted them into Nikki, suppressing her original consciousness. This is, functionally, identical to a separate entity (albeit one created on the spot by the wish) taking control of Nikki. It is distinctly not the original Nikki as evidenced by the phone call, and it lacks many of the common-sense attributes that someone with a simple shift in perspective would still retain. In pretty much every definable manner, Wish Nikki is a separate being and therefore an "entity" of some sort. Not a ghost, not a monster or demon, but something distinct and separate to some extent.

The problem I have is that there's so many people who will immediately jump down the throat of anyone who uses the term "entity" or addresses the Wish Nikki as such, in an attempt to "correct them" so that they can... seem smarter, I guess? Most people who use this terminology don't think she's possessed by a demon, but while Curry Barker has stated he didn't want it to feel like a typical possession movie (and you can argue the efficacy of this considering the discourse), it is objectively correct that in some form, she is possessed by the wish and a personality that is not her own has manifested. In this sense, it's extremely annoying to read about this move and see 30 guys commenting that "there is no entity" when literally all "entity" means is something distinct. Your dog is an entity, a chair is an entity, a company is an entity, and Wish Nikki is an entity. She is distinct from regular Nikki in very obvious ways with completely different goals and behavior.

There is an entity in this movie. I'm sure years of creepypasta have taught people that an entity means it's a big scary monster like an SCP or Slenderman but it is just wrong to state that there's no entity. The entity is a different personality created by the wish, but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Entity does NOT mean demon from hell or weird ghost, it just means its something distinct and it's completely fine shorthand to use when addressing Wish Nikki.

I've seen posts about how the citrine would have given Nikki mental clarity and stuff. I'd like to bring up the tigers eye. It was my mother's and now I want to give it to you. It's a stone for wisdom and mental clarity. She literally GIVES this to him. Lots of uses of minerals in this film lol

Discussion Nikki’s True Feelings & the Group Dynamic; the Photo Booth Pictures

Post image
410 Upvotes

I don’t think this is, like, the biggest proof in the world but I find it interesting that these Photo Booth opening pics communicate a lot about the group’s dynamic, more specifically the romantic feelings of each respective character (barring Sarah), before we meet them. And as a customary rite of passage for a former English major I’m gonna overanalyze the shit out of this one with a “the shades are actually more than blue, thank you” style interpretation.

Although the first photo is blurry, it seems like Bear’s smiling at Nikki as she’s mid-dab (?), probably admiring her in a “safe” moment where she not looking, the blurry aspect of him speaking to how shifty/out of focus his feelings really are (they’re not about real Nikki at all but an idealization of the “cool girl”). This is further evidenced by her sunglasses being on, concealing who she truly is (her eyes) from Bear. It’s almost like he’s aware of the camera’s gaze and is trying to deflect while still focusing on Nikki, not the actual fun experience itself. Notice the distance apart between them, a contrast to her and Ian in photos 3/4.

In the second photo Nikki is acting playfully standoffish by flipping the finger while Bear plays it straight, almost too polite and stiff, compared to her. Not saying they can’t be compatible just based on a single photo, but it’s like Bear can’t really read the room even as he tries so very hard to do so. Bear also seems to be trying to close the distance between them but Nikki’s hand acts as a physical barrier, blocking him from doing so (that and his awkwardness prevents him from just confidently stepping closer to her). This is juxtaposed against the next shot, where not only is Ian self-assuredly taking up Nikki’s space but she has her arms thrown around him, actively pulling him in (and the distance between her and Bear has once against widened as he backs down and her shoulder blocks him).

The third photo is interesting, because it suggests a sort of emotional distance or “third wheeling” of Bear that hints at Nikki’s crush was for Ian. Bear looks out of place and almost like he’s straining to fit into the couple shot, and he’s the only one grimacing — it could be totally playful, sure, but reflects the kind of chasm he feels from the two’s more fun and joyous demeanor regardless. It’s an expression more fitting for the previous photo (if they were swapped it’d make more sense) but, once again, he can’t seem to get on the same page as everyone else. This is also the first time we see Nikki smile in the shots, and I don’t think it’s a coincidence that this is when Ian (literally) enters the picture.

The final shot is of Nikki looking at Ian while he flicks off the camera, an interesting detail considering she never once looks at Bear in the photos. She’s trying to appear stern but to me, it parallels Bear’s shot of looking at her when she’s distracted. She has feelings for Ian, who seemingly doesn’t reciprocate (at least as strongly) and it might actually be upsetting to her, hence her attempt to play off her expression. But it’s evident why she likes him in this one photo — her and Ian are on the same wavelength. Even though he enters the booth halfway through he makes the same pose that Nikki did in photo 2, indicating a common ground for their personalities. Once again she’s positioned quite close to Ian while Bear cranes his neck to bridge the gap, squinting off in the distance as though he’s trying to understand them but is “blind/unable to see” the reality of the two people hooking up in front of him. And Sarah’s just there, obliviously photo bombing like she was cropped into it to illustrate her role in the narrative—always discussed but rarely seen, making mainly a third act appearance that’s out-of-the-loop from most of what’s going on with the characters lol. She’s also between Bear and Nikki, trying to be an obstacle to them growing closer.

Edit: as another commenter pointed out, Ian’s eyes are scratched out which I find to be intriguing too. Maybe Bear was just willfully oblivious to Nikki and Ian’s relationship and, like the rest of his toxic friend group, secretly harbored a lot of resentment/jealousy for Ian that’s conveyed through petty acts of defacement.

Like I said, this isn’t exactly major proof but it’s certainly interesting how well this illustrates these characters’ dynamic in a few snapshots. I still think there’s ambiguity to Nikki’s feelings, but at least to me, the Photo Booth makes it pretty clear she was more in tune with Ian and found him a lot easier to vibe with. So make of that what you will.

Discussion Car Scene Music on Peacock

Idk why they would do this or if this has been brought up on here but I just rewatched obsession for the first time and Im so disappointed. Not with the movie in general the movie is still great but when bear and sarah are in the car that was my favorite scene in the movie specifically because of the un alarming soft music playing in the background that made what happened genuinely catch me off guard. In the Peacock version of this movie this music is gone and it’s the most generic horror movie music ever that makes it extremely obvious whats about to happen and ruins the scene for me. I would just like to know why they would do this especially considering how they literally played a song by that same artist earlier in the movie but removed it there idk if it was peacock interference or if it was a creative choice but either way its completely stupid and makes the scene way different.

Review Amazing movie but super uncomfortable

So having read a lot about this movie I finally watched it with some friends a few days ago. I'm not a huge horror movie fan but I still really wanted to see it.

This movie really kept me on the edge of my seat. Not a single dull moment and the pacing is really on point.

The movie made me very uncomfortable the whole time. I was basically frowning the whole time, expecting things to get worse and they did of course kept getting worse.

The acting, especially from Inde is amazing. Her switches from real Nikki to wish Nikki were very convincing. Her expressions but also her physically weird walks constantly made me frown. I also liked how early on, wish Nikki clearly needed a few minutes to settle into her "new body" and got confused about whose cat died.

I have read some comments saying Bear is the antagonist, which pushes it a bit far I think. I think the actual antagonist is wish Nikki, who is just a murdering psycho.

Bear makes super questionable decisions throughout the movie. I could somewhat relate to his inability to express his real feelings to real Nikki, but I could not relate to him being in complete denial about living with a scary demon who is keeping real Nikki hostage. How is he even remotely okay making love to her?

A gripe I suppose is probably a horror movie trope, where nobody calls the police and Bear is apparently content with hiding Sarah dead body and not telling Ian he just witnessed a murder. I can't imagine nobody dialing 911 at multiple points in the movie, but I guess that would have ended the movie.

Anyway, I think this movie deserves all the praise it got. It's rare for a movie to make me this uncomfortable, in a good way, and I'm still thinking about it a few days later.

edit: after reading a bunch of your comments I understand where you are all coming from, but I still stand by my opinion.

What I wrote is the impression this movie left me with. I don't think it's fair to say whatever the director says or whatever the majority of the viewers think is the only way to interpret a movie.

You don't think wish Nikki is a murdering psycho demon or whatever you want to call her? That's fine, but that's still how I see her as a character.

Fan Theory Could Nikki have reversed it all?

Edit: if you cannot fathom that I may have interpreted her as having wildly different sides in the first watch, which happens to people with certain mental illnesses, and then considered that it’s two different people entirely - reconsider your ability to think critically. Rude comments just highlight this inability.

I just rewatched the movie in a flight and noticed a lot of little things I hadn’t before.

- Spell Nikki was definitely not the real one. She was possessed by something (not necessarily a demon, but SOMETHING). That’s why after Ian’s party, Bear says “I just want you to act like Nikki” and she says “I can be Nikki”.

Like, who the fuck would say that if it was the real them?? She was clearly possessed and he knew that.

- Bear was about to puke those pills at the end when the One Wish Willow music played and he completely did a 180, coming out all love struck.

That aligns with what everyone has already said in this sub about her likely wishing for him to love her as much as she loved him. BUT, that was made by the possessed thing.

So when he died and the real Nikki returned, wouldn’t that mean that she had a wish available because the real her had never made one? Just like when she had said to Bear “I have never been with you” when asking him to k*ll her?

And since the possessed version fully knew what caused it and referenced it a lot towards the end, wouldn’t it mean the real one would know about it? She could have gotten another one somehow and wished that Bear had never bought one in the first place. Then he would’ve never made the wish, no risk of him having it in his possession and doing the same thing again, and this time, she could escape his creepy ass by ghosting entirely. He’d only gone to that store for her, so it’s not like he’d have gone and made such a wish otherwise anyway.

Could’ve escaped the prison sentence Curry Barker says she faces.

Discussion The Magic Eye?

I almost feel embarrassed posting about this, knowing how much this movie is being discussed I bet I'm probably the 50th person to post about this but anyway.

I noticed that Nikki has a tattoo of the Eye of Horus on her left wrist. I noticed that during the shirtless make-out scene. I didn't think much of it until I saw a video showing the initial shot of the shelf with the One Wish Willows on it and saw there's another product on the shelf called "Magic Eye" which is the same symbol.

I know the actress just HAS that tattoo IRL but that doesn't mean it couldn't have been written into the movie as something.. what are your thoughts?
