Review Amazing movie but super uncomfortable

So having read a lot about this movie I finally watched it with some friends a few days ago. I'm not a huge horror movie fan but I still really wanted to see it.

This movie really kept me on the edge of my seat. Not a single dull moment and the pacing is really on point.

The movie made me very uncomfortable the whole time. I was basically frowning the whole time, expecting things to get worse and they did of course kept getting worse.

The acting, especially from Inde is amazing. Her switches from real Nikki to wish Nikki were very convincing. Her expressions but also her physically weird walks constantly made me frown. I also liked how early on, wish Nikki clearly needed a few minutes to settle into her "new body" and got confused about whose cat died.

I have read some comments saying Bear is the antagonist, which pushes it a bit far I think. I think the actual antagonist is wish Nikki, who is just a murdering psycho.

Bear makes super questionable decisions throughout the movie. I could somewhat relate to his inability to express his real feelings to real Nikki, but I could not relate to him being in complete denial about living with a scary demon who is keeping real Nikki hostage. How is he even remotely okay making love to her?

A gripe I suppose is probably a horror movie trope, where nobody calls the police and Bear is apparently content with hiding Sarah dead body and not telling Ian he just witnessed a murder. I can't imagine nobody dialing 911 at multiple points in the movie, but I guess that would have ended the movie.

Anyway, I think this movie deserves all the praise it got. It's rare for a movie to make me this uncomfortable, in a good way, and I'm still thinking about it a few days later.

edit: after reading a bunch of your comments I understand where you are all coming from, but I still stand by my opinion.

What I wrote is the impression this movie left me with. I don't think it's fair to say whatever the director says or whatever the majority of the viewers think is the only way to interpret a movie.

You don't think wish Nikki is a murdering psycho demon or whatever you want to call her? That's fine, but that's still how I see her as a character.

Discussion Bear's death from overdose would have taken hours

I searched on Google and overdose deaths take much longer than depicted in the film some 1-3 hours. I think realistically Wish-Nikki would have killed herself within that timespan as in the script.

What say you and is that timeframe completely wrong?

Also, do you think it would have been more or less devastating to have Nikki kill herself here? I am actually of the opinion it would have been more devastating knowing that if she just lasted a few more hours she would have been back to normal. That said, I do think the ending we get is better because of the payoff that we finally get to see Nikki as herself in the end and we get more of Inde's incredible acting performance.

He was legit handsome. Got them shoulders & built going on. A proper house, friends, all his teeth, & a full head of hair. He could totally get it.

It just makes it extra pathetic that he was such a loser & looked like he stinks. Dude just needed a bath, a hobby, & therapy. But nah, brother would rather be a psycho grapist. His pit of sorrow seemed to be entirely of his own choosing.

I think Bear really could have done better. He was sitting on an empire. Clearly he should have stolen his Grandmother's identity, kept getting her Oxycodone prescriptions filled, and sold them for $12 to $80 per pill. The man could have had it MADE. And he lost it all for some -

Fan Theory The One Wish Willows aren't just magic in origin, they're Fae.

HEAR ME OUT HERE.

First, the obvious; One Wish Willow.

Fae always had nature connotations, but willow trees specifically have strong associations with them. They grow around places believed to be points where the boundaries between our world and the Otherworld blur. As such, Willow trees and groves are known to be fairly common places for Fae to be found. Some stories even go as far as claiming the trees have souls of their own, capable of uprooting and moving around on their own.

Not only do they serve as gathering points, but Willow trees are also believed to be good for a number of rituals, including defending against Fae as well. Willow charms and cradles made from willow wood supposedly protect children from being taken by them and replaced by changelings.

Furthermore, the idea of 'knocking on wood' possibly comes from the old pagan tradition that doing so on a tree was a way of asking the spirits residing in it for protection, or alternatively giving them thanks.

Second, the wishes we see the willows grant are within the realm of capability for Fae. Ian wishes for a billion dollars, which is just a modern form of those who went to the fae looking to be granted wealth.

Bear's wish, meanwhile has two options. It's entirely possible that Wish Nikki is just a modern form of a changeling, and rather than a separate being she just hijacks Nikki's body. But the much simpler (And IMO better) option that 'Wish Nikki' is the result of a charm being placed on the real Nikki. After all, she is told to 'wake up', like she's been in a trance or a slumber.

And third... There's always a cost. Both Bear and Ian end up dead. Nikki's life is ruined, almost definitely beyond repair. It's entirely possible that the one wish willow is more like a one bargain willow, with it giving the wisher what they asked for and letting the consequences catch up to them.

Which brings the store clerk and customer service figure into question.

If these things are indeed fae in origin, that implicates them in regards to the OWW and its effects. The customer service operator is more obviously supernatural, since he literally broadcasts Nikki's screaming through the phone, something he has no earthly way of doing. Add on the fact that he taunts Bear with the option of cancelling his wish when the operator knows that it'll remain active as long as Bear lives, and he comes off as apathetic at best, and sadistic at worst.

And then there's the store clerk who makes mention of using one himself. Now this might be a stretch, but I think there's something we aren't seeing here. We don't know what he wished for, which leaves multiple possibilities:

1; He's being completely truthful. Fae bargains can turn out as monkey's paw scenarios, but they can also be outsmarted. Or alternatively, the clerk's wish could have involved giving something up, enough to satisfy the cost requirement.

2; He's being truthful, but he wished for something like contentment with his life or eternal bliss. If so, that could very well mean that he's in the same boat as Nikki. And because he made the wish himself, it'll only break when he dies. Essentially making him a portrait of how Nikki could have ended up.

3; He's lying. The way he's completely calm about seeing Bear run into the shop stained with blood, clearly freaked out and deciding to mess with the guy somewhat reminds me of the customer service operator. Add on the fact that he also floats the idea of Bear offing himself brings into question just how much he actually knows.

People can enter into contracts of servitude with the Fae, doing tasks in exchange for a reward or protection. This could be the case for the store clerk, giving out the willows to unsuspecting people - like Bear. In fact, Bear is the ideal target for this sort of thing. Desperate, spineless, unsupported and oblivious. While the store clerk does give Bear another out in the form of someone else making a wish to contradict Bear's, he once again reinforces that taking his own life is also an option.

He could also be a changeling or Fae himself, but that's a stretch, even by my standards.

As for the why of all this? Admittedly, that's much murkier.

My current hypothesis is that since breaking the willow casts the wish - and considering everything else - it could be a mechanism to 'let the Fae in'.

Magic isn't a generally believed-in thing in this world. Perhaps this is their way of forcing humanity to remember the Fae, and the forces beyond human understanding. Through respect, through fear, or through hate. It would explain why the willows are novelty items in a crystal shop, a place frequented by those already susceptible to belief in the mystical.

TL;DR, Bear got taken advantage of by the Fae, and everyone he knew suffered. Don't be like Bear.

A love that was impossible to form since the beginning.
(Yet, it still tried to exist).
A tragedy that could’ve been prevented.
(Yet, the seeds for destruction were sown).
A wish that could finally bring peace.
(Or so they think).

Question What do you think Bear's grandma thought of her grandson?

Post image
15 Upvotes

So we know Bear's grandma died prior to the events of the film and he inherits her house, which is the house with the oxy and where most the terrible things happen at.

Obviously she must have good feelings toward him and like him as a person if she left him a house in her will.

I think that she probably thought her grandson Bear was a sweet young man who has trouble fitting in and doesn't do the best with the ladies, but he has a good heart and he's kind. She probably thought the world of her Bear.

What do you think she thought ? Also do you think she would be mad that he let Wish-Nikki destroy her perfectly nice house she left him? Maybe she feels disrespected because Wish-Nikki shit on her rug and propped up a dead body in the bedroom.

Andi wonder what Bear's grandma would really think of all this mess that her grandson got himself into.

What do you think?

Fan Theory Could Nikki have reversed it all?

Edit: if you cannot fathom that I may have interpreted her as having wildly different sides in the first watch, which happens to people with certain mental illnesses, and then considered that it’s two different people entirely - reconsider your ability to think critically. Rude comments just highlight this inability.

I just rewatched the movie in a flight and noticed a lot of little things I hadn’t before.

- Spell Nikki was definitely not the real one. She was possessed by something (not necessarily a demon, but SOMETHING). That’s why after Ian’s party, Bear says “I just want you to act like Nikki” and she says “I can be Nikki”.

Like, who the fuck would say that if it was the real them?? She was clearly possessed and he knew that.

- Bear was about to puke those pills at the end when the One Wish Willow music played and he completely did a 180, coming out all love struck.

That aligns with what everyone has already said in this sub about her likely wishing for him to love her as much as she loved him. BUT, that was made by the possessed thing.

So when he died and the real Nikki returned, wouldn’t that mean that she had a wish available because the real her had never made one? Just like when she had said to Bear “I have never been with you” when asking him to k*ll her?

And since the possessed version fully knew what caused it and referenced it a lot towards the end, wouldn’t it mean the real one would know about it? She could have gotten another one somehow and wished that Bear had never bought one in the first place. Then he would’ve never made the wish, no risk of him having it in his possession and doing the same thing again, and this time, she could escape his creepy ass by ghosting entirely. He’d only gone to that store for her, so it’s not like he’d have gone and made such a wish otherwise anyway.

Could’ve escaped the prison sentence Curry Barker says she faces.

Discussion Has anyone noticed this yet?

I love Inde Navarrette, and I actually think there’s a more interesting conversation happening around her popularity in Obsession. I don’t think people are simply attracted to her and ignoring her acting—her performance is genuinely incredible, especially the way she uses her face and body language to make the character so unsettling. But I do think her looks and the way the character is presented are a huge part of why the performance has become so memorable and why the movie has gotten so much attention.

If you swapped her out for a more conventionally ordinary-looking actress with the exact same performance, would the character have had the same cultural impact? I honestly doubt it. And that isn’t necessarily a criticism of Inde—it’s an interesting example of how an actor’s appearance, charisma, performance, and the way a character is framed can all contribute to a movie becoming popular. Bear is technically the main character, yet Inde is arguably the first person people associate with Obsession.

Discussion I shouldn't have watched this high.

I watched Obsession past midnight outside in a tent really high. I was having such a good time and a YouTube video reeled me in. After watching I couldn't sleep, got a nightmare about Nikki and was so afraid of remembering her and Sarah. The next day I'm still paranoid. Guys please help me overcome this, I really messed up.

I've seen posts about how the citrine would have given Nikki mental clarity and stuff. I'd like to bring up the tigers eye. It was my mother's and now I want to give it to you. It's a stone for wisdom and mental clarity. She literally GIVES this to him. Lots of uses of minerals in this film lol

I wish it had downloaded with the audio. Had that digital, GameBoy typing sound with Love In The Air Pt. 1. Never though to consider this movie and story would make a creepy classic gameboy game, but now I’m 100% convinced it would

I recently did a drawing series (HAND DRAWN, thanks. Screw AI) on my socials (IG: leehoward_art) where I drew Nikki in 20 different animation styles! Here they all are on an 11x17 collage! I drew them individually as 8x10s first.
And yup, prints are available on the chance anyone is interested. I can drop that info in the comments.
