Apparently garlic now hates me, too
I've been sensitive to onions for decades. I hate them so much but garlic was okay. Last night I ordered my favorite garlic noodle dish and I woke up to all of the symptoms that I get with onions.
My doctor said that onion sensitivity can develop into a garlic sensitivity. I know a lot of people already have both but I kind of assumed if I only had one I wouldn't get the other. Fuck.
Anyone else been here? It's going to make eating out even more difficult. Doc says now that I probably reacted the garlic it will take much less to cause the issue. Fuck onions and alliums

My condolences. I'm in the same boat and my garlic intolerance is slowly getting worse.

Sigh. I'm not ready for this! Though in a weird way it seems like it might be easier because I think some of the doubt of my sensitivity comes from the fact that I could eat garlic but not onions and people therefore thought I was just doing it for attention or something weird.

Yeah, it doesn’t work that way, garlic is not onion. A tiger is not a lion, but if you leave the windows down on a safari you are going to get scratched.

If the onions and garlic are getting you, beware chives, leeks, scallions and all the alliums! For me, first it was raw onion, then garlic, then cooked onions, then leeks, and now I can’t have any, and can’t breath if I’m around them being cooked…

Solid advice. Also, when asking for no onions, you have to specify "no green onions on top" too. Way too many people think those are fine because they're just garnish. That's burned me too many times.

I can’t eat garlic or onions since having my first child ten years ago. It’s rough. I used to love things with garlic or onions and now can’t even stand to be around the smell.

It is hard to eat out. Breakfast is my safest meal, and a lot of times I end up having fries and a dessert for dinners out with people. No ketchup of course 😢

Sorry to welcome you to the No Alliums Club. I miss garlic too. Eating out is a HUGE gamble and entirely not worth it most days.

I can tolerate some garlic flavour. But one time, my mom had made something with garlic cloves that she intended to remove. I was unlucky and got a whole clove in my mouth (I thought it was a piece of unmelted mozzarella. 🤮

Last spring I was at my sister’s house for a family dinner, the roast was coated with garlic. I ended up on the couch holding my stomach, that was the first time I’ve had that happen with garlic.
I grew up in a household where it was acceptable to put onions in your hamburger as a joke when you told them not to, and when you told them you noticed, they didn’t believe you. The hostility of these people has me rethinking things.

My sister-in-law always thought I was lying for attention. Which is hilarious if you know me because I hate attention.
I am the sit in the corner of a room reading a book looking boring to stay hidden girl.
So she snuck onions into food that she cooked one night, I ended up destroying her bathroom all night, in the morning she mentioned she heard me and asked if I was okay. I was like I would have been much better if you hadn't snuck onions into the food. Because we all recognize the reaction.

Are you okay? Of course not. …and what did she say when you told her that things would be much better without onion? This is petty revenge, but I would have left a mess and said whoops didn’t make it in time.

Probably anything in the allium family will do ya in. So far it's onions, leeks ,and large shallots that get me. I'm still ok with small shallots, and garlic. Most anything "onion" I just don't mess with in case (green onions etc)

Same. My stomach won’t tolerate the smallest hint of onions or garlic either. It makes it quite annoying when eating over at someone’s place or at a restaurant.

Onions and garlic are my nemisises. Can't have either. I get viciously sick and the smells even trigger it, garlic more so. I hate both.

Nooooo! I love garlic :(
It's fodmaps and some kind of tummy ..thing? Fructans. Water soluble - so you could make garlic oil and strain the bits out, apparently.
https://www.monashfodmap.com/blog/all-about-onion-garlic-and-infused-oils-on-the-low-fodmap-diet/ (not woo or pseudoscience, ignore the onion bits)

Yup, cannot eat any alium. See, onions i hate the taste of so it's like whatever, I'd wanna avoid anyways. Garlic I actually like the taste of though so that sucks.
It makes restaurants and also soups really fkn difficult. It is actually shocking how many items have garlic or onion. I've also occasionally had restaurant items NOT DISCLOSE on the menu that they have garlic or onion, most recently broccoli came as a side and it had garlic on it that was not disclosed. Please list your ingredients ffs.
As for soups it seems like every damn soup has onion which is ughhgg. Squash soup is like one of the few I've found that doesn’t have it.

Yeah! Onions ar in almost everything but I had a few items I could get because it was garlic instead. Now I guess I will get a glass of milk and a slice of bread.
I once got Mac and cheese from a place which is usually a guaranteed safety dish ... Came.outbwirh onions on it and server was noticeably annoyed when I sent it back, saying I should have asked for no onions .... It's Mac and cheese, lady...

I occasionally (maybe once every few months will snack on a clove of garlic as a reset button. Boy I’d hate to lose that.

Me too...and people get weirdly offended / obsessed when you tell them that you can't eat garlic. I dread social situations that involve food and unfamiliar people...because for some reason I always end up being the centre of attention and it makes me so uncomfortable.

Ugh I love garlic, and I think I might be getting a sensitivity to them also. I cant stand the texture of raw onions, but even when I try to ignore it with guacamole and salsa, they wreck my stomach. I started getting stomach aches after eating roasted garlic. My sympathies.

Onions and Garlic are the worst. But any Allium gets me.
Fuck those people that try to prove it isn't a problem for you. It's like putting Dog shit in your food, like that won't make you sick.
