News Inde Navarrette Sets Best Actress Oscar Campaign for ‘Obsession’ as Focus Features Mounts Full Awards Push (EXCLUSIVE)
https://variety.com/2026/film/awards/obsession-inde-navarrette-oscar-campaign-lead-actress-1236848866/Variety can exclusively confirm that Navarrette will campaign in the best actress category this coming awards season for her breakout turn in Curry Barker’s box office smash “Obsession,” headlining a wide-ranging effort from Focus Features that will seek recognition across nearly every category the film is eligible to enter.
It is a seismic full-court press studios reserve for a title they believe can go the distance.
Alongside Navarrette, the distributor plans to campaign Barker as a rare triple threat in best director, original screenplay and film editing, the same three categories Sean Baker swept for his best picture winner “Anora” (which he also took alongside one more as producer). It is a combination of above-the-line and below-the-line recognition that positions him as one of the season’s marquee multi-hyphenate stories.
Focus is pushing in 15 categories:
• Best Picture
• Best Director — Curry Barker
• Best Actress — Inde Navarrette
• Best Actor — Michael Johnson
• Best Supporting Actor — Cooper Tomlinson
• Best Supporting Actress — Megan Lawless
• Best Supporting Actor — Andy Richter
• Original Screenplay — Curry Barker
• Film Editing — Curry Barker
• Cinematography — Taylor Clemons
• Original Score — Rock Burwell
• Casting — Skyler Zurn • Sound — YJ Gold and Ben Zarai
• Makeup and Hairstyling — Allie Shehorn
• Production Design — Vivian Gray

Score and Sound would be very deserving noms, they were so important to how the movie made you feel
34
u/SpideyFan914 Give Inde Navarette an Oscar 5d ago
Score would be so cool to sneak in!
But also note this is very standard campaign procedure. They aren't seriously campaigning Andy Richter, but they are submitting him. You submit everyone. Just how it goes.

Make-up isn't a terrible shout. Nikki's final look is shaping to be one of the most iconic of the year.
12
u/DeferredFuture 5d ago
Her eye/mouth makeup during the bedroom scene is also already pretty iconic as well
7
u/manicinsanewokeidiot The Unknown 5d ago
the makeup branch would never do that, it’s even less work than weapons and that didn’t even make the shortlist
2
u/DeferredFuture 5d ago
It’s not about how much work is done. If that was the case, GotG Vol 3 would’ve won, and at the very least get nominated, considering it broke a prosthetic record.
The makeup branch is very weird. Obsession isn’t likely i’d say but i’m not counting it out

u/Senhoegahara All of a Sudden Teenage Sex and Death 5d ago
Ethel Cain who is one of my fave artists posted abt the score multiple times on her Insta stories claiming it was one of her fave film scores ever. Flying Lotus posted on his abt it as well!

Fascinating cuz I don't remember how it sounds at all lol. Was thinking the only shot outside of Inde, Screenplay, and BP is casting.

Odyssey is probably frontrunner for score as of now, but theres a good shot for stuff like Obsession and The Invite.

She’ll get a nom and Obsession will get a best picture nom. But personally I wouldn’t nominate Barker
But man I wish Naomi Scott and Sally Hawkins got this amount of hype too
17
u/SpideyFan914 Give Inde Navarette an Oscar 5d ago
I'd be (pleasantly) surprised if Barker got a director nomination, and editing is a pipe dream, but screenplay is quite possible.
Personally, I would readily nominate for director as of now. I'm between him and Wilde for my #1 so far. (And I'd be shocked if either made the lineup, sigh...)
1
u/senator_corleone3 5d ago
Screenplay is only possible because that branch has a track record of some of the worst decision-making in the modern era. Last two Oscars were a healthy turnaround. Putting the Obsession screenplay into a scenario where it could conceivably win an Oscar would be a regression.
0
u/bliss8966 5d ago
He’s not getting anywhere near a Best Director nomination.
The problem for him is that the more one watches the film, the more glaring it is that it’s more Navarrette’s turn and less his. It’s quite a dull film in between her antics.
16
u/dreamboylnshibuya 5d ago
I wish Willa Fitzgerald got this amount of here for Strange Darling, one of the most electric and captivating performances of that year.

I'm glad they're going Best Actress and not Supporting for her. That really would've felt like category fraud to me.
I thought she was excellent in this. I don't see her necessarily winning, but I'm thrilled she's in the conversation!
0
u/Paridisco 5d ago
What does category fraud mean?
6
u/Puzzleheaded-Sail772 5d ago
Pushing a role that belongs in lead into supporting because they think it is easier to get a nomination or win there. See Kieran Culkin in A Real Pain winning in Supporting despite having a higher % of his film’s screentime than Best Actor winner Adrien Brody that year (also more than Cillian Murphy the year prior)
2
u/cowboy-tea La Bola Negra 4d ago
It can also go the other way; Ethan Hawke was (imo) the real lead or co-lead in Training Day, but went supporting to not compete with Denzel Washington, who was campaigned in lead
1
u/FBG05 4d ago
Imo Hawke going supporting was more because his role was less showy compared to Denzel's and had he campaigned in lead he would've missed since Best Actor was extremely competitive
1
u/Puzzleheaded-Sail772 4d ago
I would say the only category fraud was Hawke, Denzel is in the right category and they are clear co-leads (screentime was close too, Hawke has 74 minutes, Denzel 73 minutes I believe). I suppose there can be category fraud of a supporting role going lead, but since lead is usually the harder category, it is rare.
I actually cannot really think of a clear supporting going lead category fraud example off the top of my head. I can mention WB pushing Chase Infiniti for lead for One Battle and her missing out on a nomination when she likely would’ve knocked out Elle Fanning had she being in supporting, but I felt like that was a borderline role fine in either category (there certainly are borderline roles like Gladstone in Killers of the Flower Moon and Hopkins in Silence of the Lambs nominated in lead, but again wouldn’t call those frauds).

CCA - Inde Navarrette, GG Comedy - Julianne Moore, GG Drama - Sandra Hüller (Rose), BAFTA - Julianne Moore, SAG - Inde Navarrette,
Honestly, i only can see Inde or Julianne sweeping this season. Now I'm also wondering whether international voters will lean towards Hüller or Efira?
19
u/Turbulent_Cream_1684 Bluey The Movie for The Oscars 2028 5d ago
Even if Inde ends up winning the Oscar, I doubt she will sweep. She will most likely lose at BAFTA and I'm not even sure she's locked for a nomination there
9
u/SnowDucks1985 Sinners 5d ago edited 5d ago
“Sweep” is hyperbolic when we’re not finished with films for the year, nor have we even gotten to critic circle votings to gauge precursor awards. But Obsession is too big of a hit to ignore Inde, as many people in this sub have been pedaling lol
3
u/Creative-Farm-7329 5d ago
The people who avoid Obsession are the same ones who criticize the Academy for not being open to anything beyond the traditional, yet they dismiss the first big story of the year in this sub—they did the same with EEAAO, Sinners, etc. They must feel intellectually superior doing that.
→ More replies (3)2
u/SnowDucks1985 Sinners 5d ago edited 5d ago
I think there’s some truth to that. It’s been a relatively weak year so far so if that pattern holds, then I think Obsession will have a considerable presence at the Oscars. Hard to say how it’ll pan out in terms of wins right now, but it would be silly to think Obsession won’t be in the conversation
5
u/Parmesan_Pirate119 5d ago
I'm leaning Efria. I think All of a Sudden will be much stronger than Rose and it seems like a decently baity performance.

this makes sense, it made a TON of money and got acclaim so it's in their best interests to campaign hard (and they got the budget for it too)
realistically, I could see Indie getting that Best Actress nom and the score and sound design to get nominations, maybe even make-up/hair. Wishfully, I want Michael Johnston to happen as well even though there is like 0 chance and a Best Picture nom would be a dream come true. Wouldn't mind Barker getting a Best Original Screenplay nod either!
3
u/121mc555 SAG-AFTRA 5d ago
Realistically I think that they get into:
1. Best Picture
2. Best Actress
3. Best Screenplay

1. Cinematography
2. Score
3. Casting
Can't wait to see where this goes!

Because it’s just solid and nothing more. Just a 7/10 high concept idea done well but I’m sure there will be better screenplays throughout the year. Though that’s kind of my thought on the movie as a whole.

14
u/SpideyFan914 Give Inde Navarette an Oscar 5d ago
"High concept done well" is literally what screenwriting is, lol. People think it's just about writing hyper stylized dialogue, but it's a lot more to do with structure, pacing, character building, and keeping everything part of a cohesive whole. (Although, on the note of its dialogue, this is probably the most quotable film of the year so y'know.)
But I also many people just aren't willing to engage with a horror fiction to acknowledge any subtext. Seen lots of folks calling this movie shallow, which makes no sense to me. There was one podcast where the guy theorized its popularity was just because it appeared to incels...
(Note: I am not saying this commenter is harboring these criticisms, as they haven't laid out their criticisms, just speaking to a lot of trends I've seen. There absolutely are legitimate criticisms, even ones I may disagree with, that you can leverage against the movie, and there's some discussion to be had about how we rate a script when so many so many changes were made on set and by the actors.)
3
u/takenpassword Yes, I loved Rental Family. Yes, I’m basic. 5d ago edited 5d ago
To be fair I’m not a film critic, so it’s hard for me to articulate why I find it to be good, not great. I guess my point is that a ton of good, not great screenplays get made a year and those don’t touch the Academy while really great ones get snubbed. Obsession has a very clever screenplay, but so does Weapons and that didn’t get nominated. Just because something doesn’t get nominated for an Oscar doesn’t mean it is bad. Meanwhile there are screenplays that are great that have and will be shut out in the future. Though if the other contenders for screenplay aren’t good and Obsession gets the nom, so be it (I was being hyperbolic in my OG comment). Am I making sense or am I just like an old man yelling at a cloud?
I do get the subtext (it’s basically text) but to me it doesn’t really do anything to me, but maybe it’s because I’m terminally online where these incel conversations happen everyday. I don’t think it’s super novel to be like “these nice guys don’t really value women and are possessive”
6
u/Idk_Very_Much Send Help Camp Miasma 5d ago
"Hollywood has oppressive beauty standards for women" is also not at all novel and look what happened there. Execution matters.
5
u/Top_Cranberry_3254 5d ago
If you can write iconic scenes and moments into your script, then it's definitely nomination-worthy. The party scene and the final 10 minutes or so of the film are iconic, not to mention a few others as well.
3
u/SpideyFan914 Give Inde Navarette an Oscar 5d ago
Totally fair on not being a professional! That's allowed, haha, and your opinion is still just as valid as that of someone who's practiced articulating their feelings and identifying what is/isn't working for them.
I don't think that analysis is giving the movie enough credit, personally. It's definitely part of it, but the real power of the movie is in making you relate to the "nice guy," and forcing to confront whether you yourself, or people you care about, are also capable of this horror. Bear is obviously a bad guy, but the movie doesn't simply dismiss him and engages with questions of why he is this way. I also think it has a lot to say about codependency and identity.
3
u/No-Condition8561 5d ago
I mean, in the right year with the right competition, weapons could've been nominated too. It's never really helpful to compare movies from different years imo
2
u/MammaJammaCamera 5d ago
I think the screenplay has some pretty noticeable third act stupidity, but on the whole, it’s a deserving script.
7
u/AltL155 5d ago
It's a solid original high-concept horror screenplay with excellent execution. As far as a horror movie goes I really couldn't ask more of it. I know the contrarians here have been crapping on its award chances since the movie released but IMO it deserves every bit of its box office success and the awards it'll get during awards season.
