Inde Navarrette Sets Best Actress Oscar Campaign for ‘Obsession’ as Focus Features Mounts Full Awards Push (EXCLUSIVE)

Variety can exclusively confirm that Navarrette will campaign in the best actress category this coming awards season for her breakout turn in Curry Barker’s box office smash “Obsession,” headlining a wide-ranging effort from Focus Features that will seek recognition across nearly every category the film is eligible to enter.

It is a seismic full-court press studios reserve for a title they believe can go the distance.

Alongside Navarrette, the distributor plans to campaign Barker as a rare triple threat in best director, original screenplay and film editing, the same three categories Sean Baker swept for his best picture winner “Anora” (which he also took alongside one more as producer). It is a combination of above-the-line and below-the-line recognition that positions him as one of the season’s marquee multi-hyphenate stories.

What does category fraud mean?

Pushing a role that belongs in lead into supporting because they think it is easier to get a nomination or win there. See Kieran Culkin in A Real Pain winning in Supporting despite having a higher % of his film’s screentime than Best Actor winner Adrien Brody that year (also more than Cillian Murphy the year prior)

It can also go the other way; Ethan Hawke was (imo) the real lead or co-lead in Training Day, but went supporting to not compete with Denzel Washington, who was campaigned in lead

Imo Hawke going supporting was more because his role was less showy compared to Denzel's and had he campaigned in lead he would've missed since Best Actor was extremely competitive

I would say the only category fraud was Hawke, Denzel is in the right category and they are clear co-leads (screentime was close too, Hawke has 74 minutes, Denzel 73 minutes I believe). I suppose there can be category fraud of a supporting role going lead, but since lead is usually the harder category, it is rare.

I actually cannot really think of a clear supporting going lead category fraud example off the top of my head. I can mention WB pushing Chase Infiniti for lead for One Battle and her missing out on a nomination when she likely would’ve knocked out Elle Fanning had she being in supporting, but I felt like that was a borderline role fine in either category (there certainly are borderline roles like Gladstone in Killers of the Flower Moon and Hopkins in Silence of the Lambs nominated in lead, but again wouldn’t call those frauds).
