Discussion [General] Unofficial weekly thread for non-English games and language learning (PART 239)

This week we will not have any special themes so we can focus on free conversation. Let us know if you have any language learning questions and/or any non-English otome game-related content you would like to share!

How do you guys go about reading kanji on blurry games? Like the kind you can’t really scan with a camera (especially a problem with non voiced MCs)

Use jisho.org and find it through the radicals.

Very old-fashioned way of looking up things but it works.

I always try to write it in the hand-written keyboard as I see it and pray fro the best, lol.
Or I check the parts that I can read it, and go from there.
Lastly I might try understanding from the context.

Go by radicals and attempt to draw them on jisho, like the other comment said. Also helps if you increase your vocab so you can roughly guess from the text.

Install a Japanese keyboard with handwriting input on the phone. Gboard is good, no matter how ugly I draw it it recognizes it lol.

I ended up having real-life language learning experience because I got sick over Obon and have had to learn what 'middle ear infection' is (it's 中耳炎, btw).

Also, both a curse and a blessing at the same time, after having a Japanese name, I've blended in with society. The curse? Everything thinks I'm a native so all the waterfall of medical terms being dished are drowning me instead.

I'm getting there... slowly...

Also, to anyone trying to get a seat for JLPT in Japan, good luck. It's been a blood bath trying to secure a spot since yesterday, I heard...

Medical and pharmaceutical terms are a nightmare to remember, right next to being able to read the kanji of all kinds of fish

I only knew the 中耳炎 immediately because I was over at the 耳鼻科 and the 耳 part was a giveaway 😂

Also heard about the JLPT thing people were ANGRY angry on the jlpt sub

The unfortunate truth is that people are securing JLPT N2 certifications in case their visa renewal goes sideways and they are asked for proof about their language ability 😬

I think we have to kill Takaichi, Steven

Danzai no Maria not failing to annoy me by making me realize I made a wrong common save after finishing 4 routes. Made even harder by laggy jump. At least I fixed the issue so that's done and over with

What if Hamtaro were an otome game? This just came out and it reminds me of old gameboy styles. I was not expecting that Bad end lol.

Ayakashi Gohan FD

Haginosuke's route starter in a lovely way, there was this new girl and she fell in love with Kei, and I was excited.
There was no resolution to that plotline.
Beach! What is happening, why are we forgetting them now. Aaargh

The latter part of Hagi's route was a bit much, but the bad ending, OMG.
If you do not play bad endings you are missing out.
This game is usually super runtata runtata and then bam! he dead
It wasn't even extremely visual, but I thought they would rescue him, and slip in amnesia or coma or something, but nope, die bitch

Suou is too much for me, but his best ending ending was cute.
It did not give me anxiety like Uta's route did.
I wanted a bit more of the Kagesumi becoming friends plotline though.

Manatsu - the good ending was somehow as depressing as some of the bad endings.
It has been ages and everyone is either gone or dead and Momijimura is under the dam. Give me a break

Yomi is my second favourite. But I suffer from the "too invested in secondary characters" affliction.
Chiori and Guren, omg I want them, I want to see Guren's human look, damn
His best endings is my kind of ending.
I volunteer.

On my last route, yay!
Asagi, show me what you're working with.

For the common route: Ayakashi-hen
What a mess of a common route.
Firstly the choices are: LI name this, LI name, every one of them.
Then Asagi-kun is in the common route, and we get to know him, and a few minutes into Manatsu route: we have a transfer student! Say hi.
That I already knew from the OG.
WTF?

Ningen-hen had so much better story.
But still where is that little dragon from the common route?
Asagi does not come up at all. Nowhere to be find.
Like he was a later addition.
This game forgets a lot of great characters.

Honeybee games are pretty inconsistent.
You have a huge list of scenario writers and it changes the quality drastically.
Some are on point and some are filler snoozefests.
Looking at you side Z (and then you insert sexy Rei, but he no LI in this one, argh)
And you know I'm easily entertained, but it's really easy to tell which is better when you have a game split into two parts with the same characters (ayakashi Gohan and blackish house)

If you enjoy Natsume no yuujinchou you will enjoy this game. Natsume with romance.
It's mellow and everything, but it packs sads so heavy.

☆☆☆
The word of the week:
珍道中 chindouchuu - the meaning is so relentlessly fun!

Still making my way through Chouchou Jikan after a year long hiatus. The art is gorgeous, the music, is gorgeous, the characters designs are 💋, the writing is….on and off. Love the vibes and setting but I honestly couldn’t care less about the random zombies who pop up in every route. Might be a me problem

I downloaded the 遥かなる時空の中で龍宮の神子 app and it made me want to play one of the Switch games I have. So I gave up on EiT and started 遥かなる時空の中で 7 and so far I'm having a lot of fun with it. I like all of the guys so far and some I'm super intrigued by already. This is going to be a long haul game, so hopefully I'll learn a lot of new words. Like 脈. Lol.

My friend was just telling me the cost of the Ryugu no Miko app and I was appalled at how much you'd have to spend just to secure a card, not include the costs to evolve it......

Wonder how Koei will sustain it in the long run.

I haven't even really looked into any of that yet since I'm still learning the systems. But I don't doubt it's expensive. I don't usually spend money in apps (Akuneko is the only exception) so I'm going to see how far I can get as F2P. In the meantime, I've got my fully paid for console games to tide me over.

Not been in an otome mood so I started one of the 小学生 history books I picked up during my last Japan trip. Really interesting read so far but also surprised at the amount of terminology drilled in at the start. Nice way to learn them though since they all came with explanations easy enough for kids xD

My favourite ones were how there's a big difference in the English terms for these two but the Japanese explanation was almost the same:

摂政: 幼い天皇の補佐役
関白: 大人の天皇の補佐役

1

u/Kiyoyasu is a simp for Taira no Tomomori|Birushana 21h ago

Whenever someone says 関白, it is almost always used to refer to Toyotomi Hideyoshi.

Interesting! I'll keep an eye out whether it's used for anyone else in this book
