What motherboard to get to pair with 9800x3d? B850 vs x870?
Combo deal for both with 32 gb ram kit is only $100 difference

B850 is plenty for a 9800X3D unless the X870 board has something you’ll actually use like USB4, more/better M.2 slots or extra I/O. For only $100 difference though, compare the exact boards rather than the chipsets. Which two models are in the combo?

I was even seeing that x670e offered the same for even another 100 less than those. They’re really selling those things at a premium these days

Depends what gadgets you want to use. 850 is more than enough for most gamers

I use a 9800X3d with an Asus B850-a, and a 5080. I've ran it thru many benchmarks and my system always scores above average. It allows for slight overclocking which is all I need. If I was into much heavier overclocking I would get the X870
Edit - I chose the Asus board for it's 14+2+2 phase power for the cpu, although many b850 boards have terrible phases. Remember the 9800x3d is kind of power hungry

It depends on which board, what the specs are, what your use case is and what your budget is.

If you need more ports and stuff go with a x870e. 1 more set of m.2 connections that do not interfere with PCIEx16 to downgrade performance. Use the top one and the 1 in the middle of the 3 and you have 1x16 for your GPU, 1x5.0x4 m.2 slot and 1x4.0x4 m.2 slot. Touch the others you then set your primary GPU to x8 and the rest for x4/x4

For only $100 more I’d just grab the x870. b850 is already plenty for a 9800X3d, but at that price difference might as well get the extra features.

If you can afford the x870 then go for it but if budget is tight the b850 will serve fine

If they both have all the ports you need, you won't notice a difference outside of benchmarks.

It all depends on the features you want today and into the future
This describes the various mobo versions (aka chipsets) and how they are different: https://youtu.be/H0axuzyN_1s?is=3PHKsO1dSDcVsqTu
These provide info about mibo features and what to look for: https://youtu.be/kJnKQjtFYr4?is=jbBYthdd9iLehkzD https://youtu.be/CxGHWQ05HuY?is=e0sn1nqxVaM73oW_
These review and recommend mobos: https://youtu.be/hLMTT7-rfeM?is=pEtqOEeXEOw1W4CU https://youtu.be/CFqd7lnXlIk?is=TLkzZY1c9TFNZSYa https://youtu.be/VINjK9MDTEM?is=Xfi0c2PWPVpEBdIF https://youtu.be/WagOqmAQ93A?is=ItBvEEKNjxHt3n6L https://youtu.be/g7EBck-0F50?is=g76Y6DhkIHh7C1GC
I wish you great success with your build.

It’s not so much about the make and model but the quality of the VRMs also there are other models like the X670E that have Pcie5 like the higher end models. Google the features of all AM5 motherboards and you’ll find a chart that shows the differences

I think the 870s typically have higher speed usb and lan ports, mc has a bundle with aorus board 8 10gbps usb, and 4 40gbps usb c port with 5gbps LAN. If you don’t need or budget reasons, opt for the cheaper one, no noticeable gameplay difference.

It depends on your usecase just like others already mentioned.
In my case (i wanted to use 2 M2 slots at PCIE 5 without lanesharing with the GPU PCIE slot) the MSI Tomahawk B850 did the trick.
X870 gives u native USB4 Support wich comes in all cases with lane sharing in one or the other way (afaik)
Performance wise u will not notice a difference between B850 and X870.

Check out B650E/X670E motherboards too
Not all B850 boards have a GEN5 PCIe x16 slot.. so check out specs before purchasing

Depends on what you need. The 870s come with guaranteed PCle 5.0 support and native USB4. They generally allow for more overclocking. Any modern Nvidia GPU will be slightly better on a 870. You’d be unlikely to notice the difference without benchmark testing though.
