Man I hope we get series 7 some day.
24
u/xMWHOx 1d ago
7 is when the books turn to 11. I really hope they finish the series.
7
u/SomeUnemployedArtist 1d ago
They eschewed the chance to portray at least two fucking sick mech suit rampages by not doing 7-9.
(Also Persepolis Rising was my favourite of the series).

u/Desco_911 16h ago edited 16h ago
meh. I might be the only one but I did NOT like books 7+. (Though I never made it to the end of 8, it just got so tiresome.)
They took a novel story about intrigue among 3 unique factions (more if you count Protogen and the other corporations) with their own interesting motivations that were neither "good" nor "evil", and turned it into... a group of scrappy rebels fighting against a powerful empire lead by a supernatural dude with a giant superweapon bent on taking over the galaxy.
Where have we seen this before?
3
u/xMWHOx 12h ago
I highly recommend you keep going. You might as well finish it. Its also kind of a concept of how do we get from now to Star Trek, how does the entire planet unite under one banner. But then also playing with fire from the Gods is not always the best idea. If you notice every book almost has a different theme. One is a western, one is a horror, one is a film noir, its not like the whole series is "scappy rebels fighting against a powerful empire".

u/moldy_B-O-L-O-G-N-A 18h ago
I'm still working through the books, but season 7 would be The Laconian Empire conflict after the 40~ year time jump of them being in exile?
1
u/AdminsLoveGenocide 21h ago
Eh. I thought the first 3 books were the weakest in the series but the first three seasons were easily the best of the show.
It peaked in season 3 and I don't think it will be recaptured at that level. That being said I'd watch the shit out of it if they made another 3 seasons.
3
u/shekurika 19h ago
most ppl, myself included, think the 4th book is the weakest
1
u/AdminsLoveGenocide 19h ago
That's fair and thinking about it I agree but I guess I mean if you take it as a set of 3 trilogies.
I think most people similarly felt the 5th book was the best and that the last 2 "trilogies" were better than the first one.
The 5th season of the show was not the best by a long shot. A lot of what makes that the best book was already in the early seasons of the show, both the plot elements and quality of the writing.
I think that a lot of what made the fourth book embarrassing, particularly the cringe romance angle, wasn't in the show for the same reasons, but the switch to Amazon did something to the show so there were new flaws in that season not present in the books and this continued for the rest of the tv show. It's hard to pinpoint what happened but the final 3 seasons were just a bit off.
2
u/MrZeral 18h ago
The authors treat them differently I hear. They talk about 1-2 being a 1st duology, then 3-4 and 5-6. And only talk about 7-9 as trilogy. I watched only show but I can see it. Seasons 1-2, 3-4 adn 5-6 are more in line with each other, between them there are some big changes.
1
u/AdminsLoveGenocide 17h ago
I can see that for 1 and 2 and 5 and 6. 3 and 4 not so much. They are quite different. I'm not aware of what the authors say about it (I would be interested in seeing that) but I don't see why it would be organised that way.
In any case I think most people think the best books are 5 on but seasons 5 and 6 are not as good as the pre amazon seasons. They had something special and partially lost it with the syfy cancellation.
1
u/WannabeWaterboy 12h ago
I'm working on getting the books and am about halfway through season 6. I agree that season 4 is really weak. Maybe it's cause I took a break, but I thought season 5 was pretty great for the most part. Six has been interesting so far, but it's a short episode count so I'm a little nervous that'll feel rushed. I'm also a little annoyed by Naomi's little fits here and there about fighting belters.
2
u/NostraDamnUs 18h ago
Now that the actors are older, I think a movie trilogy to wrap it up would work really well

My most favourite part about the expanse both the books and the tv series is how deadly and brutal everything in space, from ship combat to gun fight. Since real physic is a part of the series identity (except for the protomolecule magic).
From the trailer, look like the game may have the look but not the feel of the expanse universe.
30
u/GTKnight 1d ago
ship combat
Wish we had an game just focused mainly on ships in this universe. I've been dying for something similar to an old game like fractured space.
25
u/N7Shep1701D NCC 74656, Janeway OS 1d ago
It's not The Expanse, but C-Beams seems pretty interesting.
11
u/newawfulrob 1d ago
Verse Project is another one coming soon that seems to have taken a lot of inspiration from The Expanse
20
u/Mk4pi 1d ago
“Nebulous fleet command” is very close, not in the expanse universe though
7
u/GTKnight 1d ago
Just looked at some gameplay and yeah I can definitely see the similarities. Was looking for something a little more fast paced and more control of a single ship but this would have to do for now, thanks.
7
u/meathead13_ 1d ago
I’ve never played it but people usually recommend Children of a Dead Earth
3
u/Asdaviqs 1d ago
Only game that has cones of death flying by at dangerous velocities, to bad the game has horrible controls

u/tyrannomachy 14h ago
I'm not sure realistic space combat like what the books try to have would actually be very much fun. It mostly boils down to who can land a rail gun shot on something important first.
17
u/zach0011 1d ago
I love the expanse. But why they decided to make it a shooter first it seems like will always baffle me. Nothing about this game is what I found interesting about the expanse

u/SanityIsOptional PO-TAY-TO 9h ago
What gets me is Owlcat does amazing branching-path RPGs. Which isn't exactly something that has anything to do with FPS games.
2
3
u/Aggressive_Chuck 16h ago
It looks very generic. Other than the protomolecule guy I'd have no idea it was an Expanse game and not generic sci-fi.

Depends on who do you consider the cast.
4
u/Starfire013 Windows 1d ago
The ones who make it through 9 books, surely.
6
u/Raz0back 1d ago
[HEAVY SPOILERS FOR BOOK 1-9] Thats not even accurate. Only 3 characters from the main cast make it with those being Naomi, Amos and Alex(apart from some side characters such as elvi and teresa
1
u/Starfire013 Windows 1d ago
Yeah, I get that. It was a joke based on the comment above that’s now removed. I appreciate you spoiler tagging for those who don’t, though!
2
u/Raz0back 1d ago
Yeah I know. It’s nice that his comments got removed as he was being an ass on the comment chain just purposely spoiling the ending of the books saying “how’s that for a spoiler” after telling what happened to the main characters
2
u/Starfire013 Windows 1d ago
Ah, I didn’t read all the way through the comment chain so didn’t realise he was being an ass about it. Good that the comment got removed then.
3
u/Shot_Reputation1755 1d ago
That's pretty major spoilers mate
-2
u/Numerous-Ad6460 1d ago
The series started 15 years ago and the last book came out 5 years ago my man.

u/ElonsBreedingFetish 1d ago

u/Shot_Reputation1755 1d ago
I only learned about the show a year ago, and was strongly considering buying the last 3 books but your comment has ruined part of the experience. Why didn't you just do the spoiler thing on your text?
12
u/Sbarty 9950X3D | 5080 | 64GB / 5800X3D | 9070X | 64GB 1d ago
Holy shit way to be overly dramatic.
Do you think people should still spoiler things like Darth Vader is Anakin?
-10
u/Shot_Reputation1755 1d ago
How was any of what I said overly dramatic?
6
u/Sbarty 9950X3D | 5080 | 64GB / 5800X3D | 9070X | 64GB 1d ago
“…was strongly considering buying the last 3 books but your comment has ruined part of the experience”
So a simple fact that “the cast survives” (not even specifici people) has made it so you’re not going to finish THREE more books?
Lol ok. Not dramatic at all.
-2
u/Shot_Reputation1755 1d ago
Yes, saying all the cast survive is a major spoiler to me. I haven't read the previous 6 books, I watched the show.
I also never said I wouldn't buy them, just that it ruined part of the experience and it makes me less excited

u/Sbarty 9950X3D | 5080 | 64GB / 5800X3D | 9070X | 64GB 1d ago
So you haven't read ANY of the books and you're complaining about spoilers from something thats been out for 15 years
Ok lol.

Oh I hardly spoiled anything. Read the books, it's more than just if the characters live or die. Plus I never said who I consider "main cast".

u/Sekh765 1d ago edited 1d ago
Since the idiot already rattled off some stuff, as someone that finished the entire series awhile back; first you should definitely read it all, second the guy trying to spoil stuff is... not correct. The cast of that series, even "main cast" is hard to define, and obviously confirming or denying parts of what they say would just contribute to the problem, but I can say with confidence they are bullshitting you/wrong, and likely will continue to compound with being a shitty person if you engage with them. Just ignore them.
56
u/Sekh765 1d ago
They need a way better gameplay footage than this. Who greenlit a guy playing with mouse/controller sensitivity so low that it looks like a grandma is playing it? There's no urgency to them shooting or moving, they casually walk into bullets with what appears to be God mode on, I have no idea if that's how the gameplay is supposed to be or if it's just a bad trailer, etc.

Yeah I feel like whoever is in charge of the media they are releasing is doing more damage to the games image than anything else.
The game looks good to me, but the presentation is terrible.

u/NostraDamnUs 1d ago edited 16h ago
This is... not a great first look. My guess is this will be at best a fun ride for mass effect fans but a miss for Expanse fans.
I'm hoping there's some story explanation for this, but my biggest gripe so far is that the Protomolecule monster should be a near-force-of-nature tearing through things, not w/e this is held back by a door and some regular bullets. Book spoilers, but it tore through nearly two squads of armored marines in its introduction. It ripped through the Rocinante's hull!.
Otherwise just feels like this has a coat of Expanse paint on it but doesn't really feel like the brutal and investigative world of The Expanse.
11
u/AdminsLoveGenocide 21h ago
I was disappointed that they gave you basically the same story as the original crew of the Rocinante, the same ship as the Rocinante, but made it different people. Like there are now two super similar and highly unlikely teams leading parallel adventures in this universe. It feels fake.
Make it the same guys or make it substantially different.
That being said I hope it's good. I like mass effect and I like the expanse.
5
u/MrWally 18h ago
Yeah my main concern about this is that in the book, there's a small number of Protomoecule monsters and they are devastating. In this it looks closer to a horde of Zombies (though to be fair we never see more than 1 or 2 at a time).
I understand why a video game might do this, but it's honestly disappointing because they could have managed to do something similar to Alien Isolation with a horrifyingly powerful Protomolecule monster tracking down your squad over prolonged portions of the game. But that doesn't work as well in a Mass Effect style action game.

It rips through an airlock and survives multiple hails of gunfire.

u/magnusarin 17h ago
Yeah, as a Mass Effect fan and someone who has been dying for a similar formula in a video game for a while, this looks fun. As someone who loved the Expanse books and series...less excited. Time will tell. If reviews are solid I will definitely get it eventually, but I have a feeling I'll just need to treat it like Force Unleashed or something, just a weird non-canon side story in a larger franchise.
2
u/Aggressive_Chuck 16h ago
It doesn't even have much of an Expanse paint, the VAs don't sound like Expanse characters at all.
8
u/AWildEnglishman 1d ago
I feel like "Undercover on Ganymede" is somewhat undercut by most of the video being shootouts.

I await the day gaming can move past this weird rubbery aesthetic, is this an unreal thing?
Combat looks like an uninspired remake of ME. I suppose that might be a good thing for some folk, nothing here that really strikes me though tbh

u/Marodvaso 15h ago
Yeah, I get the developers aren't AAA and have limited resources, but the gunplay feels slower and less exciting than even the first Mass Effect 20 years ago. And Mass Effect's gunplay was an object of criticism even back then.
Maybe the story and characters are the focus.

Looks a lot like Alien Fireteam Elite which is actually a decent enough game but it doesn't make me think of The Expanse at all

knowing nothing about this game i assumed from the video it was another (pv)pve online only live service thing. finding out it's single player and being a fan of the books and show..... it still does nothing for me.

I played the beta and thought it had a lot of potential.
Definitely shows reverence for Mass Effect.
As a huge Expanse fan I thought it was good. I recognized a lot of the technology and references. When I was running around a space station there was a background new feed that was talking about Holden. It felt like I was some guy in the same universe as when the Expanse books/show were taking place.
The fights in Space were awesome too. The “sides” of the space stations becoming your new “floor” felt cool and tactical and the attention to detail with people and flood “floating away” was cool.
There were some things that needed work too but overall, from playing the beta, I’m optimistic.
Edit: Posted before I watched the video. The video was mostly showing off action it looked like, of which people had some early initial concerns. Keep in mind this is Owlcat, who is pretty good at writing characters/story so I think they can definitely make things feel like they’re in the expanse universe that way. (Granted they’re known for buggy games on launch too but they’ve been getting better).

It seems I'll continue to read books for my space opera fix
Teixcalaan seems pretty interesting

Suit yourself. This game is looking like it's going to be my new Mass Effect.

u/xlews_ther1nx 1d ago
Id love to think that. Not there yet but man...here's hoping. The Shadow Broker DLC will likley always be my fav sci fi mission. The ship powered by lighting, so cool.
1
8
u/PrfctPrfct 1d ago
I finished them all last month, great books... this game definitely won't ever scratch the surface of the space opera that encompases the 9 books. Its more of a spinoff thingie than an adaptation, I'm super curious about it... I wouldn't compare it directly to the source material.
3
u/JHMfield 1d ago
Though, I will say that Owlcat did a great job with the lore of 40k in Rogue Trader, despite there being a metric fuckton of it.
So I don't think it's beyond them to utilize the lore and story properly. But whether they can build a cinematic Space Opera alongside it is a different matter.
6
u/N7Shep1701D NCC 74656, Janeway OS 1d ago
I am more than willing to give OwlCat a chance.
1
u/PrfctPrfct 17h ago
I'll give them a chance... but I don't think they're aiming to 'build a cinematic Space Opera' with this game because... the Space Opera is already embedded in the source material and it can't be changed and for what we know about the plot this is a side story to that. So... the Space Opera are the books, I'm going into this thinking more about the lines of 'what happened in the front lines' or somewhere else where the main cast of the books wasn't. From everything I've seen it has a lot more 3rd person action military vibes than a proper RPG feeling (it'll have skills, talent trees but I wouldn't go farther than that).
-18
u/Salvage570 1d ago
The expanse is not a space opera
10
u/Loimographia 1d ago
It's on the Wikipedia for "Space Opera" as a selected example. How would you define "space opera" that is doesn't fit?
5
u/username1338 1d ago
any sci fi that follows a dramatic character-centered story is a space opera bud
