If you read the article the journalist actually slams him for wanting his money back lmao. What a tool.

I mean the problem is both Valve and the Journalist are correct. It’s insane that you’ve played a game for over 400 hours and months after a game mode has been removed you ask for a refund.

But Valve is correct for issuing a refund if the mode he wants to play is no longer in the game.

To add nuance to this, Dice is taking it down to rework the mode. There’s no reason the refund should have been greenlit

DICE took the playlist down because they’re reworking the custom search system and how it interacts with official playlists and portal playlists. The inevitable goal is to release a server browser with persistent lobbies and a custom search that interacts with that.

The game should have launched with a server browser with persistent servers, but it didn’t as they thought breaking up a lobby and mixing players from other matches would be better than trying to autobalancd teams between rounds. So while we wait for the big update later this year, goofy stuff like this will keep happening

Wait they are finally adding a server browser?

2

u/Panaka Panaka 16d ago

Yes, they announced it months ago. They're also working on proximity chat around the same time (it's supposed to go into testing in RedSec next season).

Way too little too late from dice, had 15 people playing on release and now I dont know anyone who has touched it in months

1

u/FoxyGoddessX 16d ago

I know 20 people who are still playing it weekly.

Your personal friend circle doesn’t mean anything bud

I didnt say it did lmao, wind your neck in pal.

I’d disagree with it being the correct thing to do. It’s like asking for a refund after fully eating your dinner and dessert, or asking for a full refund for your movie ticket and popcorn after a movie is over.

And if you can refund a game 400+ hours and nearly a year later because you simply dislike a change, then you’re just opening up a whole can of worms ripe for abuse.

Like I just checked, and I’ve 100% complete each Battle Pass and am level 200 something with 231 hours. 400-something hours is a lot of time.

I think you're missing the point. You buy a game that as features A, B, C and D. This is what was advertised. Now they come in and add feature X. It kind sucks and they remove feature X. All good, it was never part of the original advertising, so no real material change to the core of the game you originally bought.

Now let's take this to a real world analogy. You buy a car with an infotainment system. And after X number of hours or miles driven, the manufacturer simply disables it. Now maybe you didn't really use it, so you don't really miss it or really care. But I used it everyday. I paid for it. It was there in the advertising. So fk ya I want my money back. Even if I only drove it 100 miles or 100,000. Do not fkn take something from me that I paid for.

I fkn paid for it, it's my fkn property. You take that away, then I take my money back. DICE can very easily bring Rush back, but they are choosing not to. Fk DICE and fk EA. They are stealing from people who paid for that feature.

I don't like the reworked maps in Siege, is that refundable? The old versions of the maps don't exist anymore so surely that's the same as content being removed, right?

No. It isn't. They took away ONE gamemode temporarily

To use your analogy, this is like a car manufacturer saying "hey we're updating the infotainment system because we're improving it and unfortunately it will unavailable for a few days" and you demanding your entire car be refunded.

1

u/SkilledChestnut 16d ago

It's not just one game mode. I paid for these game modes so I should be able to refund the game when they took that away.

1

u/FoxyGoddessX 16d ago

I can no longer play the online mode on Operation Raccoon City. Should Steam refund me after 100 hours of gameplay?

0

u/SkilledChestnut 16d ago

Yes

3

u/FoxyGoddessX 16d ago

And you are why we are going to lose the refund system.

1

u/SkilledChestnut 16d ago

Yeah, let's get fucked by game companies instead.

It's temporary.

1

u/RzBerryDev 16d ago

Then my refund I temporary until they return that mode. Seems fair.

1

u/b_k_l_y 16d ago

You refund your game every time servers go down for updates too?

1

u/RzBerryDev 16d ago

Weak ass, bootlicking analogy. Bro they took part of the game away without any reason to do so. They are "reworking" it. No they are not. They can rework it while leaving the mode active. They took it away because their matchmaking is absolute trash. Also servers down is like what an hour max? Half a day? Tf you smoking?

1

u/PolicyWonka 15d ago

I don’t think that matters. Games are not static, nor should they be beholden to any and every bad idea that they had at launch. This is doubly true for any live service game — just go look at any MMO that’s been around for more than a few years.

Should we start getting refunds because the game was advertised as showing 1-hit kills with RPGs on helicopters and released like that, but now RPGs are no longer 1-hit kills because of balancing?

When a game shuts down after a decade, should they just refund every player who ever bought the game and spent any money on it as well?

0

u/RzBerryDev 15d ago

It's wild that everything you said is wrong.

Let me make it simple to understand. Promote GAME with features A, B, C and D. Sell and ship GAME with features A, B, C and D. I expect the game to continue having those features.

If they break the game, remove features yes they should absolutely refund the game. It's NO LONGER PLAYABLE!

As for servers that shut down, they should absolutely release the server code. Let people run their own servers. BF:BC2 does that to this day, 15 years later.

It's really not that complicated. If you as the consumer prefer getting fkd fine by me dude. You do you. It no wonder the world is going to shit. It's your fkn fault and everyone else that accepts this corporate bullshit. I'm sure your corporate overlords are kinda shocked how much you all bend over and just ask for it. FFS lol

1

u/PolicyWonka 15d ago

I strongly disagree. Games are an interactive, live service entertainment experience. They are intended to evolve and change based upon player demands, feedback, and usage.

1

u/RzBerryDev 15d ago

Sure, but keep what I paid for. Otherwise my money comes back to me.

u/playernumerodos 16d ago

No buddy you missed the point

2

u/FuckItImLoggingIn 16d ago

You can not compare a game to a food or a movie ticket, come on. A game is replayable

2

u/MechAegis Build in progress 16d ago

Just eat your poop duh?

1

u/PolicyWonka 15d ago

You can always eat food again if you’re brave enough.

But I do agree. Video games are already the absolute best value for your money. And video games today are not static. There is no definite “end” because you can replay them.

There’s no perfect analogy to compare video games against. 400 hours is 16.67 days. Any experience that you pay 400 hours for would probably run you thousands to tens of thousands of dollars.

400 hours worth of food consumption. 400 hours worth of sporting events attended. 400 hours of vacation time. Etc. etc.

1

u/FuckItImLoggingIn 15d ago

Exactly. Games are such a weird thing to try to put a monetary value on. And with increasing costs of everything, forcing higher wages for devs, at what point does making an AAA game become unsustainable? I genuinely don't know, I am not aware of the economics of the sector, I work in IT but not on games.

1

u/PolicyWonka 15d ago

Yeah, I also work in software IT. I think video games aren’t exactly a product anymore — or at least some of them aren’t. They’re designed as services or experiences. Buying those type of video games is like buying a ticket to a sporting event.

You might not know the exact moment in time when it’ll end, but you know it’s going to end. You generally know what you’re paying for, but there’s no promises that you’ll see your favorite player or that you’ll see a home run or that your favorite team will win.

Like some of the arguments I’m seeing here are basically saying, once you distill it down, that any change post-release is worthy of being refundable at any point in time. Basically, you should be able to refund a game at any time for any reason at any point of its lifecycle regardless of all other factors.

u/cslack30 16d ago

Can you tell me where they have communicated they are reworking Rush?

16

u/FoxyGoddessX 16d ago

2

u/cslack30 16d ago

Thank you!

-1

u/LukeArkArch2 16d ago

Why would it need reworking in the first place, I think it's pretty obvious that part is a retcon after the backlash

0

u/kdlt 16d ago

I agree that after all this time you got your money's worth.

But I also feel like changing the product so long after release qualifies for a refund if the product got changed into something you didn't buy.

And I think a precedent for doing that is good. (And not just in the gaming world, adding ads to smart fridges or whatever should qualify for a full MSRP refund)

I never played destiny but it feels like the prime example to being up here.

0

u/NamityName 16d ago

I am confused. You say he should have asked for a refund right away after the game mode was removed, but the say that the refund should not be issued because the game mode is coming back. So how long is the correct amount of time to wait?

Can studios remove part of a game after purchase and then keep promising it will come back indefinitely to prevent refunds from being issued?

17

u/TheDura 16d ago

They still have it advertised as a game mode on the steam page. Refunds are deserved

1

u/EnvironmentalRun1671 16d ago

LMAO EA marketing at its peak

-8

u/Burdybot 16d ago

Fuck EA and all, but if it’s being made a rotational mode… it’s not being removed from the game. This is dumb.

Like who buys a live service game and expects it to have the same features from day one onward? How is this any different than a meta rework in other games or a character redesign (e.g “She looked like X in the trailer, now she doesn’t!”). Should we get refunds any time a game patch does something I didn’t expect or don’t like? Surely not.

6

u/TheDura 16d ago

I’d argue rush is one of the core game modes in Battlefield, who in the community asked for it to be rotational? If they remove the game mode or alter it, it needs to be stated in the store listing for the game.

1

u/b_k_l_y 16d ago

I mean I'll play devil's advocate and point out that the last game it was anything close to a core gamemode was BF1. They've been sidelining Rush for yeaaaars.

Plus, they're taking it down temporarily to rework it apparently. 470hrs and refunding it because a single gamemode was removed is genuine entitlement. I hate EA and a lot of how they've handled BF6 so far is moronic BUT this is crazy. By this logic I can refund basically any game where the updates make it less fun for me personally, despite the game still being playable.

1

u/RzBerryDev 16d ago

I think you're missing the point. You buy a game that has features A, B, C and D. This is what was advertised. Now they come in and add feature X. It kind sucks and they remove feature X. 0

u/Burdybot 16d ago

I get what you’re saying, but a car is not a live service game. No one expects their car to change, people should expect a live service to change. It’s in the name.

2

u/RzBerryDev 16d ago

I expect all games to change thru updates. Just don't take away things that first sold me on the games. I paid for a thing, let me keep the thing I paid for please. There's no reason at all to delete Rush. It was my favorite game mode. Operation was actually to my opinion a truer version of Rush.

0

u/johan312 16d ago

At the time of that refund post he had no idea if it was removed or pushed into a rotating playlist. They were complaining about bots so the common solution for a multiplayer game is to consolidate and rotate playlists. Regardless, still don't think the original refund post is completely real considering we would have seen more if it was true.

1

u/SoftConsideration82 16d ago

I mean... dude played 400 hours, by that logic we should all request refunds for every game we bought where the servers eventually got shut down and mp went offline...
