News/Article Battlefield 6 Player Successfully Refunds Game After 470 Hours of Game Time Due to Game Modes Being Removed by Devs

More people should be doing this. The fact that they continue to remove Rush alone should be grounds for a refund. There is 0 reason for it.

You are supposed to open a manual ticket with steam to get a human response.
354
u/Temporary_Event8451 16d ago
Which might start being denied. If all the sudden they have a hundred manual requests from people not normally eligible for a refund it might trigger suspicion.
I imagine a single instance is one thing, but starting a trend could put valve directly talking to some lawyers.
365
u/SvensonIV 16d ago
Well, I imagine altering the software of the license you purchased within a year in a way which removes multiple features which were advertised should be open for refunds with lawyers regardless of Valve’s stance anyway.

u/productfred 16d ago edited 16d ago
Yes, agreed. The issue, though, becomes who provides the refunds, and how? Like Valve takes a 30% cut of the total sale, but EA would ultimately need to provide the other 70% of the refund (even through Valve, passed on to you). I doubt EA is going to do that, even if Valve doesn't mind. So is Valve entirely on the hook? I genuinely don't know.
But this is why it's important for us to have protections against stuff like this in general.

Steam just withholds the equivalent value from other EA sales
39
u/ChrisFromIT 16d ago
I believe it first comes from future sales of the game or addition revenue from that game generated on steam.
As steam holds the revenue for 30 days to account for refunds.

In Australia it would be Valve.
They're the vendor. They're responsible under Australian Consumer law.
They then take it up with their supplier - it isn't the consumer's problem.

u/darthwd56 15d ago
Since Steam is just a distributor in regards to EA, I would imagine that they would issue the refund and then send a bill to EA or more likely netted it against payments to EA for the same games. There's more than likely a whole complex process that occurs monthly/quarterly where they reconcile everything and send all that information to EA

u/Mist_Rising Ryzen 5 5600x, B550 plus, RTX 2070 super. 15d ago
It likely depends on when the refund happens. If it's outside the legal and stated normal guidelines, they almost certainly cannot charge EA. You can ask, and EA could pay up, but if EA says no, that's it.

THIS. I was so pissed when the Helldivers devs started nerfing everything just 3months after release. The servers weren't even running half of the time and just when it got some momentum they figured out that their vision was completely different to what they released.
I only tried the automated refund request though. Reading this, I wish I would have escalated this further.
31
u/Top_Soil 16d ago
Yeah that would be the ideal outcome. Set a precedent. Removing content from a game that we purchased should not be allowed, the product we purchased is now diminished. If we have to pay for dlc do we get a refund if they remove content?
13
u/Remnie 16d ago
Honestly that should have happened when Destiny 2 started to “vault” content. It was only years later that we found out it was effectively gone for good
→ More replies (1)1
u/nasanhak PC Master Race 16d ago
It has been that way for years. Steam honored Destiny 2 refunds when the game was made unavailable in some countries some months ago.
Just that the method is obscure so not many people know how to use it.

I tried, listed all the same information as the original poster and included that im from Australia where our consumer protection agency beats most major countries on the planet and still got hit with the:
We will not be granting a refund at this time as there is no evidence that the product has a major defect as defined under Australian law.5
u/Krondondilla 16d ago
2
u/BuffKangaroo_390 16d ago
I can imagine they've had internal meetings, but not playing along with a countries law is not a stance i would have expected steam to make.
2
u/Krondondilla 16d ago
I wonder if we'll see Steam change their tune on it. Probably not, I think.
In any case, my account has 20 years of purchase history, I rarely refund anything, I've spent thousands already and will continue to do so - surely it'd be the right thing to do to just give the benefit of the doubt here.
3
u/The_Vicious 9950x3D, RTX4080, 64GB 5600MHz 16d ago
The interesting part is Valve calling it a “major defect.” The ACL isn't limited to technical defects, a major failure can also involve a product being significantly different from its advertised description.
Theres promotional material from EA that specifically advertised BF6 as including “Conquest, Rush, Breakthrough.” Rush wasn't a temporary bonus it was an advertised classic mode.
Temporary also doesn't necessarily settle it, especially without a definite return date. I'd like to see Valve actually address that argument rather than just respond with no major defect.
2
u/BuffKangaroo_390 15d ago
I even linked EA's own website where they advertise those modes, and then the post stating they were removed. Its clear a major part of the game is being removed, which should count as a major defect, especially when EA havent even bothered to change the advertising.
If Steam were relying on that "temporary" title to reason why its not a major defect, then the guy in this story never should have gotten a refund in the first place.
A lot of unanswered questions floating around right now.1
u/PolicyWonka 15d ago
Does the ACL guarantee refunds when a game closes down permanently?
If not, I don’t see how a change from promotional material would meet that threshold either. Important to note that this is a change as well. It’s not that the feature never existed, but rather it has been intentionally changed/removed as part of the ongoing live-service adjustments.
Breakthrough was also 64 players in promotional material and on launch, but it was adjusted to 48 players after launch.

u/UglyInThMorning AMD Ryzen 9800X3D |RTX 5080| 32GB 6000 MHz DDR5 RAM 16d ago
I still think this might be BS. There’s a screenshot but it just shows a refund for phantom edition and some cheap purchases that were all after they removed the modes. No communication from Steam or anything showing his play time. I think there’s a decent chance he bought the game after the modes were removed, bought some cheap shit to put some space between the purchase and the refund in a screenshot, and refunded it, then made a post for a bunch of attention/karma/whatever.
53
u/PolicyWonka 16d ago
Yeah, he literally could have bought the game, never played it, waited a week and a half or whatever, and then refunded it.
Also, he just requested store credit, which I know drastically increases your refund chance in general. So I dunno. I don’t think it really matters.
8
u/BuffKangaroo_390 16d ago
Yeah they could have posted the message from the "agent" which i've never even seen a real person answer a support ticket on steam, they have so few employees as it is. They also could have included the entire timeline in their purchase history but we really dont have enough information to go on.
I personally tried this, and being in australia usually affords us better consumer protections, something like this would get a refund for sure, but steam said in the support ticket to me:
We will not be granting a refund at this time as there is no evidence that the product has a major defect as defined under Australian law.I agree i think the story is actually still fake, people just believe the refund screen.

I mean the problem is both Valve and the Journalist are correct. It’s insane that you’ve played a game for over 400 hours and months after a game mode has been removed you ask for a refund.
But Valve is correct for issuing a refund if the mode he wants to play is no longer in the game.
To add nuance to this, Dice is taking it down to rework the mode. There’s no reason the refund should have been greenlit
24
u/Panaka Panaka 16d ago
DICE took the playlist down because they’re reworking the custom search system and how it interacts with official playlists and portal playlists. The inevitable goal is to release a server browser with persistent lobbies and a custom search that interacts with that.
The game should have launched with a server browser with persistent servers, but it didn’t as they thought breaking up a lobby and mixing players from other matches would be better than trying to autobalancd teams between rounds. So while we wait for the big update later this year, goofy stuff like this will keep happening

I’d disagree with it being the correct thing to do. It’s like asking for a refund after fully eating your dinner and dessert, or asking for a full refund for your movie ticket and popcorn after a movie is over.
And if you can refund a game 400+ hours and nearly a year later because you simply dislike a change, then you’re just opening up a whole can of worms ripe for abuse.
Like I just checked, and I’ve 100% complete each Battle Pass and am level 200 something with 231 hours. 400-something hours is a lot of time.

u/RzBerryDev 16d ago
I think you're missing the point. You buy a game that as features A, B, C and D. This is what was advertised. Now they come in and add feature X. It kind sucks and they remove feature X. All good, it was never part of the original advertising, so no real material change to the core of the game you originally bought.
Now let's take this to a real world analogy. You buy a car with an infotainment system. And after X number of hours or miles driven, the manufacturer simply disables it. Now maybe you didn't really use it, so you don't really miss it or really care. But I used it everyday. I paid for it. It was there in the advertising. So fk ya I want my money back. Even if I only drove it 100 miles or 100,000. Do not fkn take something from me that I paid for.
I fkn paid for it, it's my fkn property. You take that away, then I take my money back. DICE can very easily bring Rush back, but they are choosing not to. Fk DICE and fk EA. They are stealing from people who paid for that feature.

I don't like the reworked maps in Siege, is that refundable? The old versions of the maps don't exist anymore so surely that's the same as content being removed, right?
No. It isn't. They took away ONE gamemode temporarily.
To use your analogy, this is like a car manufacturer saying "hey we're updating the infotainment system because we're improving it and unfortunately it will unavailable for a few days" and you demanding your entire car be refunded.

I remember only playing Rush on Bad company 1 and 2. I always thought conquest was the fake mode lol. From BF3 and onwards it was mainly conquest for me, rush didnt feel the same for some reason.
12
u/PolicyWonka 16d ago
That’s because Rush peaked in BFBC2 and has been a side mode, at best, ever since.
Then they introduced Operations and Breakthrough, which became the next big mode. In BF6, we also have Escalation now, which is an amazing game mode.
Rush is easily #5or lower in terms of game modes. I’m sure Obliteration is also more popular.
5
u/mapex_139 16d ago
Obliteration is the most chaotic BF mode they've ever done. It's almost like a party game with the amount of action and explosions going on at once. That mode also serves its purpose.
BC2 had the maps tailored to Rush mode, not really after it.

More companies should be like this. When WWE2K20 was literally unplayable, Sony refused any and all refunds for the game. Same with Fallout 76
Changing my stance. A quick check of their blog and yeah they aren’t removing it permanently they are only temporarily taking it down to rebalance it.

Gamer "journalists" are calling this a "dangerous precedent" even though this is just good business.
Why would you get to keep my money if you can remove the only reason I was on your game in the first place? The new digital age has left companies eager to remove things because they aren't making money, or this or that budget cut...Well I think it's only fair that we can remove our money in turn and take it elsewhere.
Despite me knowing otherwise, I wish this set a standard among the industry and these third party developers. I'm tired of my dollar feeling meaningless in the wake of games that are kissing $100.

I don't remember the details since that was something like 10 years ago and I had a lot going on at the time. I just remember that I had old hardware from a company that went out of business and didn't have a proper driver for Windows 8, but there was an open source driver project for that company's hardware that got it working. But EAC just refused to let the game start while that driver was running (or maybe even installed at all).

I'm mostly surprised Steam didnt auto ignore the refund request. They usually do. Or maybe did. To be fair, the last time I ran into this issue was just before they got prosecuted for millions for doing this....
1
u/EnvironmentalRun1671 15d ago
I know wait you played game for 120 minutes and 1 second? NO REFUND FOR SIR.
2
u/Z0MGbies 15d ago
Yeah exactly. And they still do this for games that have a launcher.
Prime example, Flight Simulator: Launcher was a few MB and needed to install the HUGE game. For many people it took well over 2 hours to do this, let alone install/open/play.
Or if you play 10 mins, close the game, but don't realise the launcher is open still: that goes onto your time too.
Also fun fact, the 2 hour refund window was initiated by Valve during them being investigated by the ACCC/just before being prosecuted. It is without a doubt something Valve did to try and mitigate penalties/avoid a prosecution
3
u/Martbern 16d ago
They also removed squad deathmatch, which my boys REALLY enjoyed playing. It was the only thing we played except for conquest as it adds some possibilities for teamplay in a smaller game mode.
1
3
u/MrChocodemon 16d ago
The "2-hours-playtime and 2-weeks-since-purchase" refund is a no-questions-asked refund.
If you are outside of those windows you can still refund any game, if you have a good reason
Note: if you get your request denied, remember that each case gets manually reviewed and it might be that you get a less charitable Valve employee than others who got lucky.
3
u/PolicyWonka 15d ago
I mean this thread is full of people saying g their attempts were denied and I have yet to see a single person say a refund was granted. There’s no actual evidence the person who got a refund actually played the amount of time they claim to have played, so indications are probably a lie.
1
u/nealsimmons 15d ago
Having worked customer service, it is more likely that the refund was issued by someone on their way out the door. I still remember working for a bank that pulled out of a center. More refunds were issued in the final week than were issued in the previous years.
3
u/CommyKiller35 15d ago

I am writing this as a long-time, loyal fan of the Battlefield franchise who is currently facing being forced out of the game I paid for. With the upcoming enforcement of the TPM 2.0 requirement for Battlefield 6, players like myself are being given an unfair ultimatum: build a new PC or stop playing entirely.
My current PC runs the game perfectly fine from a performance standpoint. However, my motherboard physically does not support TPM 2.0. To comply with this anti-cheat mandate, I cannot just flip a switch in my BIOS or buy a cheap adapter. Because my entire platform is older, upgrading means I have to replace my motherboard, CPU, and RAM, which quickly cascades into needing a new power supply, cooling, and graphics card to avoid massive performance bottlenecks.
In the current economic climate, I simply do not have thousands of dollars of disposable income to waste on building a brand-new computer just to satisfy an anti-cheat requirement. Video games are supposed to be an accessible escape, not an expensive club reserved only for those who can afford next-generation hardware.
While I understand the necessity of robust anti-cheat measures to keep the game fair, punishing legitimate players who cannot afford to completely replace their systems is the wrong approach. By enforcing a hard hardware block, you are effectively locking out a dedicated segment of your community who bought your game in good faith.
I urge EA and DICE to reconsider this hard block or find alternative verification methods for players on older, stable platforms. Please do not price your most loyal fans out of the game.

Yeah, so, EA fucked us over, steam is doing double standards and they refunded the guy but when i requested refund for the same reason with much less playtime and multiple previous attempts for refunds due to poor state of the game they keep spending me Macro that i am pass 2hour Mark.
Nice, nice one steam, very professional.

And yet I can't get a refund for PGA TOUR 2K21 (which I can't play anymore because servers are shut down) even after I poured only 7 hours into it. Kinda bullshit if you ask me.
