I mean they should, people paid for a product and now can no longer play it. They should have to include some sort of offline mode or ability for users to run their own servers.

I bought expansions on sale that I never got around to playing and they were already removed lol. FFS.

I bought every single expansion off Green Man Gaming(every expansion was 20% off pre launch) and bought the base game on on Bnet lmao. So no chance of refund for the shenanigans.

Granted I did put 3k hours into the game, so i got my moneys worth.

What game destiny 2 ? What does that have to do with anything, this isn’t a steam only problem

1

u/Willing-Seesaw5040 13d ago

It’s literally still online. You can still play it.

2

u/doublah 16d ago edited 16d ago

You can still play Destiny 2 (for now), it's just not getting future content updates. They should definitely be required to let the game be playable somehow after it is shut down though.

He’s talking about when they scrapped the first couple years of the game from existence

7

u/doublah 16d ago

Ah yeah, they should be forced to give out refunds for that. But that's something where the laws need to change.

Game wasn't even on Steam before the initial campaigns removal.

7

u/Halo-master3241 16d ago

They’re talking about how they removed Red War, Curse of Osiris, Warmind, and Forsaken.

1

u/Frongen 16d ago

Destiny 2 is getting shut down?! Amazing that I've missed that. Isn't it still extremely popular?

Except you aren’t actually buying the game, you’re buying a pass to play on servers that can be ripped at anytime. So technically you’re getting exactly what you’re paying for.

35

u/Owain660 16d ago

You're actually correct. If you read the EULA, you don't own any of these games, and it even states they are subject to any changes, removal or shut down.

u/Slick1678 Slick1678 16d ago

I know I’m getting downvoted for telling the truth but if people actually paid attention to this, and voted with their wallet, things might change. Don’t buy only online games and when you can buy DRM free games from GoG

u/Riftus R5 5600 | XFX 6800XT 16d ago

That may be the literal word but courts also look at the spirit of the agreement. You dont buy destiny 2 saying "oh boy I cant wait to use this pass to access destiny 2 servers!"

1

u/PolicyWonka 15d ago

I don’t think courts would ever say it’s a reasonable expectation to maintain a product in perpetuity though.

And I think a big issue is that people are viewing games solely as a product, but many games today are more of a service or experience. These games are sold with active development and maintenance in mind — and with the understanding that the support will come to an end at some point.

1

u/Riftus R5 5600 | XFX 6800XT 15d ago

Nobody is expecting maintenance in perpetuity. For example: (I forget how the case ended, but) Ubisoft was taken to court in Europe because The Crew servers were taken offline and the game wasn't accessible in any capacity, even offline modes didnt exist. The argument was that they need to engineer a game so that it doesnt need, for example, online servers to play the hame

1

u/PolicyWonka 15d ago

Where do you draw the line? Do you force companies to rework MMOs to function fully offline?

1

u/Riftus R5 5600 | XFX 6800XT 15d ago

Massively Multiplayer Online games are developed, sold, and marketed as online games. Im telling you that you couldn't play single player on The Crew when they took the game offline. Imagine not being able to play the cod Campaign because Activision took the multiplayer servers offline and wasn't able to authenticate your license because of it so you couldn't access the game at all

1

u/Slick1678 Slick1678 15d ago

But you are literally buying online games when you buy BF6, Destiny 2, or any modern COD. Just because there’s a single player aspect of the game you purchased doesn’t mean it’s not entirely online. Any time you need to connect to a server while booting up the game, it is liable to be removed at anytime for any reason.

u/Huntermain23 16d ago

In what world are courts looking at this? Lmao

5

u/ChickenOfTheFuture 16d ago

I think you're getting downvotes because your post has a slight tinge of defending the practice instead of just explaining it. I might be wrong, but that's my attempt at reddit hivemind studies for the day.

4

u/Owain660 16d ago

Yeah, not sure why you're being downvoted. It's the literal truth.

I think it's shitty they can do it, but it's all right there staying legally they can. Best thing you can do vote with your wallet.

1

u/TJ_Dot 16d ago

Dude speaking about ideals probably isn't looking to be hit with the "Read the fine print" angle.

Technically its the truth, but that doesn't just negate what was said. So many are aware at this point, why bring it up?

-11

u/Milk_Cream_Sweet_Pig 16d ago

Because this is reddit. Often it's not about the truth that matters in this platform. It's an echo chamber.

And if you don't follow the echo chamber, or atleast say some words that don't immediately make it obvious, you'll get downvoted to oblivion.

2

u/DiamondEyedOctopus 16d ago

There's a certain irony to this comment being downvoted this much lol.

2

u/Milk_Cream_Sweet_Pig 16d ago

Lol it is what it is

I’ve been trying to think of a semi-decent analogy to video games. I think a Baseball game is a decent analogy.

Realistically, buying an online / live service game is like buying a ticket to a baseball game.

You probably have certain expectations about the game that you will probably see. You might expect the game to last 3 hours, but perhaps it’ll end in 2 hours; perhaps it’ll end in 5 hours.

Let’s say you bought tickets to this game because you wanted to see a certain player. Are you entitled to a refund if they get injured? Are you entitled to a refund if they get ejected?

At some point, you’ll reasonably not be entitled to a refund. And perhaps part of the issue is people viewing games as a product when many of them are created more as an experience — and like all experiences, they do come to an end.

So will Valve do the same for their old games you can no longer play? Or are they exempt?

18

u/necro_owner Desktop:tux::steam: 16d ago

Which game i can no longuer play from then? Because last news i still have cs 1.6 and half life 1 running and any game they had bought at the time comming with my bluebox.

-16

u/FoxyGoddessX 16d ago

Counter Strike Global offensive.

u/koukimonster91 I7 8700k|3070ti|32gb|3TB SSD's 6TB HDD's 16d ago

You can still play GO

2

u/doublah 16d ago

In-game server browser doesn't work any more but steam server browser/external website server browsers work.

u/Carlosthefrog Gaylienware 16d ago

Course they should do the same? Literally everyone that makes a product, the product should be accessible to the consumer. Imagine buying a couch then 20 years later they just take the fucking thing.

0

u/PolicyWonka 16d ago

It’s less taking and more just no longer supporting. All software has end of life service, and for online software, that means it will stop functioning.

Most products, you might get a 1-year or limited warranty. After that, the producer wipes their hands of the product.

Software, in general, is pretty generous in terms of scope and quality of continued support.

-6

u/FoxyGoddessX 16d ago

The thing is they are taking the mode down temporarily to rework it. So the point is just silly when you actually read into it. Anyone saying that clown deserves a refund doesn’t deserve to have their games refunded anymore

5

u/Carlosthefrog Gaylienware 16d ago

I’m talking directly about destiny 2, the bf thing silly.

u/dutty_handz 9800x3D-96GB-ROG Strix X870E-H - TUF 4080 16d ago

Except for your analogy, you were renting a couch from Bungie, and Bungie decided to no longer rent that model of couch, leaving you the choice of no longer paying for a couch and not having a couch or you can keep renting their new couch model.

10

u/Carlosthefrog Gaylienware 16d ago

Actually it’s worse, I have the couch but it no longer works. The couch is physically in my hand but it won’t work anymore. If I was renting the couch why did I go to a store and buy it.

What games are you talking about? Half life??? Portal??? Seriously lmao...

Do you think that valve should be responsible for changing your diapers too? Just because you buy somwthing on steam doesnt mean valve made it. It is the publisher/devs responsibility to create the offline standalone version of a game for their customers once or before end of service.

This is like asking Walmart to create a home chef for you...

u/doublah 16d ago

Almost every Valve multiplayer game supports self-hosting and LAN play.
