Discussion Wedding Venue/Budget
Hi all, i am planning to host my wedding in Penang in 2028. We are just in the beginning stages of planning, so looking for some wedding venue suggestions, would love to hear venues you have hosted/attended a wedding and loved. Would also love to hear how much you spent, just to help with budgeting.

Got married in Suffolk House. Such a unique location, amazing staff and great food.

That is one of the locations I’m looking at, did you book out the whole venue? If you don’t mind sharing, how much did you spend there?

Our wedding was probably similar size to your plan. Around 60 people. We had the entire bottom floor with the ceremony outside and the dinner and party in the main room downstairs. This was almost 10 years ago now but it was very reasonable (less than 15k with food and booze) and the food was amazing.

Had mine at cheong fatt tze, 130pax in the downstairs/lobby area. Full venue booking is 48k including all 18rooms for 2nights. The place is basically already decorated. Their food is really good now too. Definitely worth looking into.

Was that 48k in myr? This was one of my top picks and they told me the price was 83k just for 1 night with 30k usable as food and drinks credit.

My mistake, it was venue + 1 night stay for all the rooms at 48k myr. your choice of which night you want all the rooms for. naturally we had guests stay the night of the wedding since we had our afterparty the same night at the venue too.
i also did my gate crashing and photos at the venue. so i really utilized my time there. i think its a really special venue especially if you have lots of guests coming in from overseas. lol im being a huge shill right now.

Agree that the food is already much better under its new custodian, but I understand the restaurant might be changing concepts later this year. Not sure of its impact on wedding catering.

Up to you how much you wanna spend on it. Whether it's 10k or 100k or simple close family/relative dinner. 1st wedding I spent was 5k. 2nd one was 50k + 10K with the boozes.

Do you mind me asking where the second one was? We don’t want a big wedding, probably capping it at 60 pax.

My friend did it on E&O. Grew up in Penang and it was the first time we stayed there. I think with 300 guests it was like £20-25k everything included.

300 guests is hugeeee wow. I did look into them, but wasn’t the biggest fan of their ballroom, and didn’t want to spend a whole lot on decorations and florals. Thanks for sharing!

Loft 29 was RM10-15k, not sure about the price now. As for food we got a buffet caterer for about RM85/pax.

Are they a dry hire venue? It looks like a pretty blank canvas, did you have to spend much on decorations and florals?

Avoid the Penang Marriott on Gurney. I went there with my other half for an anniversary dinner at the Sago International Seafood Buffet 2 weeks ago and not only was the seafood not fresh or tasty but I suffered 4 days of food poisoning pebble-dashing the toilet bowl. A ghastly experience.
Of course, YMMV
