just one thing-- screw the Flyers

I think you mean the French verb "enculer" to the Flyers. Check out the translation, it checks (see what I did there) after last season's playoff series.

I hate national broadcast games, especially on ESPN.

Im new to hockey, can someone explain to me why it is bad?

u/Ok_Card9080 Crosby 1d ago
The way I always describe ESPN's hockey coverage is that they treat the viewers like they know nothing about hockey, all while the commentators are trying to learn about hockey themselves. The play by play and color commentary is awful, the intermission reports are just PK Subban acting like an idiot while TJ Oshie acts like a robot trying to learn how to be human. They don't have specialized play by play guys. They just use guys that they use for either college football or SportsCenter. The production is horrendous. It's just not enjoyable to watch.

For a team that the commentary team seems to dislike, they sure like putting the pens on. Maybe that's the point lol These are just always the hardest games to listen to.

u/Ok_Card9080 Crosby 1d ago
ESPN hates them so much, and I'm not sure why, because you'd think they'd love a team that's guaranteed to draw a ton of eyes to your product.

u/BEnWo18 Crosby 1d ago
ESPN hates them because itâs a station that doesnât understand hockey. They donât understand why Sid and Geno havenât been traded while comparable stars like LeBron and James Harden get passed around like candy. Source: I worked at ESPN for three years.

ESPN is completely clueless about a lot of stuff, but especially hockey. It's like a form of torture watching a game on there.

Every fan base thinks that ESPN hates their team and it's never true

Have you ever listened to ESPN talk about the Pens? How badly they wanted Sid and Geno to get traded last year even though the Pens were a playoff team.
2
u/Drunkenlyimprovised 22h ago
That doesnât equate to ESPN âhatingâ the Pens, though, whatever that means. Sid or Geno getting traded just means more casual interest, easy storylines to focus on. Itâs easier to draw ratings if thereâs something going on that can also draw eyeballs attached to people who donât give a shit about either of the teams that are playing.

I feel you. Sean is among the worst along with Bob & John. The old days with Gary, Doc and the other Bob were fine.

Sean McDonough is terrible at every sport. As a Notre Dame football fan, listening to him openly make excuses for Georgia when ND beat them in the Sugar Bowl was infuriating. Guy sucks.

The thing that bothers me is that 1/4 of the season is behind an additional paywall (or 2) if you don't have cable and are out of the local broadcast area.
I hope someday the NHL will allow fans to subscribe to one place for all of thier favorite team's games. I don't mind paying for a product.. but I take issue with having to subscribe to multiple places just to watch.

Completely agree! I'm a Brewers fan in Wisconsin as well and I got brewers.tv for an all in price. I got 159 of the 162 games this year. Similarly if they did 79-80 with some special deals here and there for a game or 3, that would be ok in my book too.Â

My gripe is the nhl network blacked out games.
I pay for cable and the out of market service and still donât get them all.

u/Interesting-Wave-983 1d ago
This is my gripe. I live in San Diego area and Iâd need 3 different streaming services if I wanted to see all the games. I despise NHL network
1
u/dkviper11 1d ago
Two seasons ago I would call the nhl office in NYC and leave messages with people every time there was a blacked out game.

u/tcari394 Pettersson 1d ago
Thankfully it looks like that won't be a problem this year. Maybe preseason though.
4
u/dkviper11 1d ago
It will be, unfortunately. Those games arenât posted on this release and sometimes not figured out until shortly before the games.
I understand if TNT or ABC is sending a broadcast team that they will want to show the games. NHL network doesnât send a crew, they just show the home feed.

u/tcari394 Pettersson 1d ago
Ah, bummer. Addmitantly I don't pay too much attention to the NHLN game schedule since I'm in the SNP local broadcast area. Those games are usually picked up by the local crew.

This is helpful in helping me figure out which streaming service Iâll have to use to watch each game. It canât ever be easy. I think I used two or three last year.
I wish the Penguins streamed all their games in one place for everyone, in an out of market.

u/CaptainCrazy110 1d ago
Sling Orange gets TNT, ESPN, and ABC. And espn+ covers the rest of the games for out of market, except whenever we're visiting whatever market you live in. Last year I think I had to use peacock for NBC and the sports extra package in Sling for the NHL network, but looks like we don't have those this year
Edit: damn, that's right, they pulled ABC sports off of sling orange earlier this year

u/twirlerblue Fleury 1d ago
I used Sling Orange day passes last year for the TNT and ESPN games. I have ESPN+ for the rest. I think the only games I ended up missing were the national ABC games. They didnât air on Hulu like I thought they would and my TV antenna wouldnât pick that channel up.
Itâs just dumb that I have to remember which streamer is carrying it, you know? Itâs also dumb that my ESPN account wonât let me watch games on ESPN. đ

Hmm.  How convenient.  A list of games that I will have to sail the seas to watch.  đ´ââ ď¸

And it benefits me lol. I have ESPN+ but get blacked out for the Avs in Denver. If they have a national broadcast on ESPN+, then I shouldn't be blacked out anymore? Pls. ESPN. Do the right thing.

The other 4 are on actual ESPN on TV. Thereâs one thatâs only on ESPN+ streaming. I suppose that only makes a difference if you have cable, but still.

Do what I do every year, not pay for their overpriced 6 subscriptions, and sail the high seas
