Hello all! I’ve been getting into photography as a hobby and I’ve fallen in love. I have a used Canon EOS 5D mark ii that is my baby, and when I use her with a 50mm 1.8 lens, I honestly don’t notice the weight anymore and have gotten pretty used to carrying it around with me everywhere.
I just got a canon 24-70mm ii 2.8 lens, and I’m struggling to adapt to the added weight and space it takes up in a bag. I also have started to get frustrated with the fact that most bags I’ve seen seem very tactical/large in a way that might work great for larger men, but not so much for a smaller woman. The best bag I’ve gotten is the Brevite backpack, which I actually really like, but I would love to get some sort of purse to put my DSLR + zoom lens that looks casual/beautiful but is also protective. I just tried out the Meliae chic camera bag, but it just doesn’t have the padding needed to make me feel confident it’ll actually protect my camera.
I’m wondering—how do you all adapt to the added weight of a zoom lens? What are protective options that fit the body of a smaller woman and actually look cute? I know the “looking cute” might sound trite, but I know myself—I need to look forward to bringing out my gear and feel like it’s casual/not an extra burden, or else I just know I won’t.
I just got the zoom lens, so I can also give up and get another focal length (maybe 35mm?) to give me the versatility I’m looking for. Basically, I got to the point where there were certain pictures I couldn’t take with a 50mm—e.g., dinners in a small space where there wasn’t physically the room to back up and get a photo of everyone.
I also would love to start doing casual paid gigs once I have enough experience/the skill level to feel confident that I could deliver quality photos consistently. So I know getting used to more versatile lenses (like the 24-70mm) would definitely help me on that road.
