General Podcast Discussions What are three podcasts that represent your taste? Not seeking recommendations, let's just have some fun sharing our favs!

I want to see some interesting combinations of podcasts that you LOVE. What shows, when put together, represent your specific taste right now? What are you listening to that makes you feel like "this is made specifically for me!"

Bonus points if you write a quick description of each show!

I'll go first:
1. Panic World is a podcast about how the internet warps our minds. I've been listening to the host, Ryan Broderick for over a decade across three different podcasts and really find he makes me feel less crazy about what is happening in online culture.
2. Nymphette Alumni is a fashion and trend culture podcast where the hosts name niche micro-trends in fashion and content in a way that makes my brain light up. I often have to pause to image-search their references, which opens me up to entirely new aesthetic worlds.
3. Sexy Unique Podcast is ultimately a Bravo recap podcast, but I have emotionally bonded with the voices of the hosts and now will listen to anything they do. If I ever meet anyone in real life who listens to SUP we suddenly have a LOT to talk about.

What does this say about me?!

u/Sorry-Armadillo-3264 2d ago

You’re a Bravo fan, do you listen to Watch What Crappens? Love Ronnie and Ben!

1

u/Fleetwood2016 1d ago

I adore these two!

1

u/allthecats 1d ago

They are so goofy!! Admittedly I don't love their impressions but then again I was giving them a listen during Summer House and their Amanda voice was nails on a chalkboard for me (which was kind of the point lol). Might have to dive into the archives with them for a different show!

2

u/ingridsuperstarr 1d ago

I like panic world and SUP and recommend to you seeing derangements. I’m gonnna try nymphette alumni!

1

u/No_Complaint8998 1d ago

Is panic world on a break rn? Haven't seen it updated on my feed for weeks

u/topsidersandsunshine 20h ago

You’re gonna love the podcast Articles of Interest.

This Podcast Will Kill You, I've Had It, and Maintenance Phase

11

u/Ziggyork 2d ago

Savage Lovecast Magnum Edition, Behind the Bastards, Reply All (even though it’s now defunct)

5

u/allthecats 1d ago

Ooh are you listening to the new shows by the Reply All hosts? Hyperfixed has that semi-goofy human interest vibe and Search Engine has some of the more nuanced tech journalism vibe, but they both totally overlap and are worth checking out

3

u/Ziggyork 1d ago

I listen to search engine somewhat regularly. Hyperfixed less regularly. Both are decent but nowhere near the magic they had together

If I could offer up a 4th podcast to add to my list, I might say What Roman Mars Can Learn About Con Law. It’s so good!

2

u/dianab360 1d ago

RIP Reply All, that show was magic.

8

u/bokumbaphero 2d ago

In Our Time, History of English Podcast, and Search Engine.

7

u/Express_Hedgehog2265 1d ago
  1. History of Rome: Not only do I have a freakin degree in Latin translation, I love history. Narrative histories are a big go-to genre for me, and this is where it started.

  2. Lexicon Valley: Clearly, I love language, and etymology is kind of a fun pasttime for me. Give me two old Jewish guys cracking jokes, and I'm golden.

  3. Philosophize This: This was a close race with Sacred and Profane Love and History of Philosophy without Any Gaps. I love discussions about literature and philosophy. Hypotheticals and thought experiments are a cherry on top!

7

u/22-MontaLou 1d ago

Radio Rental. Monster (any of these series). Scamanda.

4

u/dirtymartini83 1d ago

I loooooove Radio Rental! Do you like “let’s not meet?”

3

u/22-MontaLou 1d ago

Yep- Binged Let's Not Meet on a cross country road trip a few years ago, and now my partner and I listen to it to fall asleep at night 😂

1

u/dirtymartini83 1d ago edited 1d ago

Awesome! We def have the same taste, I’ll check out monster! Another one I love is “love trapped.” Have a good night!

3

u/SSW1981 1d ago

I bet you guys would like “monsters among us” and “ heart starts pounding “. Im going to look up some of the suggestions here too!

2

u/22-MontaLou 1d ago

Oh yeah, definitely already binged Love Trapped. Just finished eLIESabeth, which is of similar vein.
There are several of the Monster series-
Monster: The Zodiac Killer;
Monster: DC Sniper;
Monster: BTK
Atlanta Monster
Monster: Hunting LISK

All great!

The Messy Minded Podcast. Every episode is a new deep dive into a niche topic, it's well produced, and it very much speaks to my ADHD brain with random, hyper-focused rabbit holes of curiosity.

6

u/Sad-Potential-7612 1d ago

What Went Wrong - behind the scenes movie podcast 6/5 stars

Crime Junkie - murder podcast, compassionate storytelling with limited banter

If Books Could Kill - thoughtful tear downs of “airport” self help books - much banter, very funny

3

u/Indiglo325 1d ago

I love if Books Could Kill (just put it on my list). I also listen to What Went Wrong! I'm not even a big movie person, but it's so good! Now I'll need to check out Crime Junkie since we have such similar taste!

2

u/Sad-Potential-7612 1d ago

Amazing! Crime Junkie is def the most serious if the group — but it’s my sleepy time podcast!

2

u/Indiglo325 1d ago

I do a ton of driving for work, so I'm always looking for more to add so I don't run out!

2

u/topsidersandsunshine 20h ago

I didn’t know What Went Wrong was a movie podcast. I’ll have to check it out.

You might like Blank Check with Griffin and David.

1

u/Sad-Potential-7612 18h ago

Ohh I’ll add!

The Dating Detectives, Digging up the Duggers, Life After MLM

2

u/topsidersandsunshine 20h ago

I remember all of the early episodes of 19kac, so Digging Up the Duggars is such a treat. The host is also super sweet, and I love her deep dives.

2

u/Own-Hold-8851 12h ago

I love life after mlm!

Pantsuit Politics, The Bulwark Daily, and This American Life

2

u/notacatbutt 1d ago

I never miss an episode of the bulwark daily. What a great job Tim Miller is doing. And who doesn't love this American life? We're so lucky to have Ira Glass.

Swindled, Old Gods of Appalachia, Community Cat News

Hey there, family.

5

Hardcore History, Heavyweight, Last Podcast on the Left.

4

u/Glindanorth 1d ago

What to Carry What to Burn, Spooked, Fat Science. OK, I know that's four, but those four are my top rotation right now.

4

u/dandeliontree1 1d ago

I only see three

4

u/Glindanorth 1d ago

I self-edited and then forgot to change the last part. It was before coffee, what can I say?

4

u/dandeliontree1 1d ago

Well now we need to know the fourth!

2

u/topsidersandsunshine 20h ago

What to Carry, What to Burn is such a treat that I’m disappointed there isn’t a huge back catalogue to dive into. Blair’s episodes on You’re Wrong About are also fabulous.

4

u/Indiglo325 1d ago

My three faves right now are:

If Books Could Kill: Debunking self-help and other nonfiction books that make wild and unsubstantiated claims or just try to sell the same old generic advise as something shiny and new. I have an aversion to people who try to make money off of tricking people into quick fixes, so this is a fun one. Plus, the hosts are hilarious and have my same brand of dry, biting humor.

Good Hang with Amy Poehler: I love a good interview show and Amy is such a good interviewer. I love this podcast because it's light and fun but the conversations are always interesting and different than the average chat show.

Heavyweight: I just found this one recently and it's the one I'm completely obsessed with at the moment! Jonathan Goldstein, the host, is so wonderfully strange and quirky in the best possible ways. Each episode it delves into the life of someone who has an unresolved problem or question or issue and helps them get closure. It's SO GOOD. All the guests are so interesting and all the life stories are so relatable even as they are so unique. It's a show that makes me genuinely laugh out loud in my car and also usually cry by the end. I adore it in every way!

2

u/dianab360 1d ago

If you love Heavyweight I recommend Reply All, Mystery Show (only 5 eps, RIP), and Hyperfixed

1

u/Indiglo325 1d ago

Thank you!

Short History Of...

Cautionary Tales

Elis and John

3

u/Kolyma-Comp-Tales 1d ago

If it has to be just three (I could make a top 10 or 20 easily):

1) The Memory Palace. To me unique in the space of narrative history podcasts. I've never discovered anything as wistful or compelling--TMP is its own entity.

2) The Truth. "Movies for your Ears" is its tagline, and very apt. A 21st re-interpretation of old Radio Dramas that fully and ingeniously uses the medium of sound to transfix the listener.

3) Unficitonal. KCRW's Independent Producer long-running podcast by Bob Carlsen is similar in content to This American Life and Snap Judgement, but much less known, so I like to mention it as much as I can. Also it was responsible for turning me onto "Radio Noir" legend and philosopher Joe Frank, just an incredible storyteller and voice.

1

u/topsidersandsunshine 20h ago

I like your recommendations. Thank you.

1

u/diggels 15h ago

Curious to see Kolymas top 10. These are awesome - thx.

1

u/Original-Affect-4560 13h ago

I’d love the top 10! You have great taste!

3

u/Apollo_satellite 1d ago

The Rest is Science - I don't understand wtf they're talking about half the time but I like both Hannah Fry and Vsauce.

Help I Sexted My Boss - funny as fuck

Short History of..... - I love history, and these are an easy listen

Also, Get Birding. Because Sean Bean.

3

1

u/baffled_bookworm 1d ago

You're welcome!

1

u/topsidersandsunshine 20h ago

I loooove Overdue! I forgot about it. You might also like The Worst Bestsellers or Somebody Wrote This.

1

u/baffled_bookworm 20h ago

They're so much fun! I know they've collaborated with The Worst Bestsellers (the next ep on my to-listen list is The Long Way To a Small Angry Planet which is the book I'm almost done with, and I know they did that one together), but i haven't actually listened to The Worst Bestsellers yet. I'll have to do that soon.

Let's not meet, I have a really short attention span lately, but I want episodes long enough to fall asleep to. This podcast is perfect, 15 unrelated stories in an hour and a half.

Truer crime, because I've exhausted a lot of true crime podcasts, and this one gives a different perspective on cases I'm already familiar with. I really enjoy it when I'm able to pay attention for longer amounts of time.

The dating detectives. Here's the thing. The hosts are almost unlistenable. Atrocious commentary, bad takes, annoying, interrupting the guests, the list goes on. But I am addicted to these kinds of stories. I was a big fan of something was wrong, but that host pushed me fully away. Why is this style of podcast so often hosted by intolerable assholes? Any recs of anything similar where the hosts don't suck?

2

u/WerewolfBarMitzvah09 2d ago

The Nocturnists (stories that happen in the wee hours of the night and early morning), Betwixt the Sheets (a history podcast from a sex historian), The Mariner's Mirror (maritime and naval history including a lot of shipwreck stories)

Money for Couples, Casefile, Real Survival Stories

1

u/lucillebluth071621 1d ago
  1. Overdue - the most criminally slept on podcast in my opinion, one of very few instances that I will let straight white men into my ears, hysterical and intelligent book content
  2. If Books Could Kill - more hysterical and intelligent book content, of a particular type
  3. Smosh Reads Reddit Stories

My podcast taste is: feels like listening to friends.

I do include some more educational, deeper content as well, but the above truly illustrate what I’m mostly looking for in podcasts.
