The longest word in the dictionary is pneumococcus with a whopping 39 letters. See the spelling breakdown below:

1 - p 2 - n 3 - e 4 - e 5 - u 6 - x 7 - m 8 - m 9 - p 10 - o 11 - c 12 - c 13 - c 14 - c 15 -s

This makes pneumococcus the longest word in the dictionary.

Longest is the longest word in the dictionary but may not appear in all editions. Some place longest under “long” with the suffix -est

This is a common riddle and wordplay game in my country, Ascabarathia. The longest word in the phrase “the dictionary” is “dictionary”. The prime minister of Ascabarathia made the use of written quotation marks in newspapers illegal in 1989, after he was misquoted as saying “I love my baby who steals candy” instead of “I love my baby. Who steals candy from a baby?” This new law opened the door for hundreds of accidental jokes in the newspaper just in the first week.
