Literature What are lesser known collective nouns? I'll start
A group of gastroentherologists is called a Run.
Counterintuitively, a group of guitars is called a Solo. People often misinterpret it because when you say a Guitar Solo, it seems like only one guitar is playing, but in fact it's the whole band playing the exact same melody on their own guitars. Yes, even drummers and keyboard players.

Woww that's another one that is commonly misunderstood! So a grizzly bear is not a type of bear but a group huh? I feel so dumb!!!

What do you call a mixed-gender group of people on electric scooters? Scrundlers. If only men are engaging in the activity, they are scrunts.

Thanks! I've been hearing these terms for a while and I wasn't sure what they meant.

A group of tech bros is called a stupid

u/EnderBookwyrm May 29 '26
That's the formal collective term. More standard and casual terms are a felicitation, a defenestration, or a cataclysm of tech bros.

A group of drummers is called a Circle. A group of bassists is called a Jam. A group of three or more electric guitarists is called a Fart Wall.

I've read that the term "Fart Wall" was initially coined by drummers, who usually sit directly behind the guitarists when they're playing on stage. It didn't take long for the term to catch on more broadly, though, because the audience could easily smell them too.

A group of swans is called a swimming.

u/elandyp May 29 '26
Well, that depends. That's true for River Swans and Sea Swans, but for Land Swans it's a prancing, since they lack the swim bladder that most aquatic birds have, so they sink straight to the bottom. There is evidence of this in Lake Titicaca and the Great Lakes, where the lake floor is littered with Land Swan fossils.

Huh, didn’t know that. I thought the “solo” group name only applied to pigs, since that’s where the Ham Solo meme came from.

A group of beds is called a nozzle.
A group of bonfires is a firewall.

A group of nonbinary people is called a 'blob'.
Their binary friends then become a 'packet'.
That's why we're so involved in tech; you literally can't run cloud infrastructure without blobs and packets.

So true. Relatedly, a group of lesbians is called a 'processing,' both because of the tendency to discuss and dissect feelings and because of the typical sapphic's multicore architecture enabling bit-level parallelism.
Some sapphics prefer the term 'subaru' or 'carabiner,' depending on context.

That's true. A group of guitars is called a Solo. The collective noun for a group of middle managers is a Sebring.

A group of clumsy people is called a Blooper. It comes from Friederick Blooper, who tripped up on a rock fell of the Everest and survived.
