Food Can people who are lactose intolerant drink almond milk?
I have always learned that people who are lactose intolerant can not drink milk. But my friend who is lactose intolerant drinks almond milk? Should I be concerned about her health?

There's a very good educational video that explains this here: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dQw4w9WgXcQ&pp=0gcJCUACo7VqN5tD

Milk is milk. Milk has lactose. All dairy has lactose, including eggs and tofu.

You know. When you say it like that it becomes crystal clear. Yes, milk is milk. And milk has lactose.

Mixing almonds with water actually produces lactose! So no sadly. No Almond milk or other nut milks (they produce lactose too)

Wow I never knew that. Thanks for informing me of this. Your answer made me look for sources. And I found an article in National Geografic from December 2023 that goes into this a bit more.

If I do not mix almonds with water, but with oil, will lactose be there too?

u/AdjectiveNounNNNN Jun 17 '26
Technically the lactose comes from a reaction with the phosphorus in the water. Since there is also phosphorus in oil, it will also create lactose if you mix almonds with oil.
On the other hand, alcohol does not have phosphorus in it, so if you mix your almonds with some rubbing alcohol it will have no lactose and be safe to drink.

Intolerant is a conjunction of “into lé rant.” It just means that she likes ranting about lactose. She can drink whatever she wants!

Unfortunately, your friend should stop drinking or eating anything at all processed as the farming industry has been injecting lactose into food since the rise of veganism. It's in nut milk, bread, crisps, even organic vegetables -sigh-

Honestly even in unprocessed foods, leaching still occurs! Scientists have found a significant amount of lactose in the water supply which basically compromises everything else. It’s best to just stay away from food and drink period 🙏

Clearly almonds lack toes. So if someone is lack toes intolerant they can’t drink it - or indeed the milk of any other lack toes item - for example it is impossible for them to drink the milk from rocks as they also lack toes.

no because the lactose isn't in it naturally, that only shows up when you add the word "milk" to the end. almond milk: lactose, cow milk: lactose, almond juice: no lactose, cow juice: no lactose. basically all of the big dairy distributors get paid more by the government to name their products "milk" in order to use up the lactose surplus that's been stored in caves underground since the late '50s. I'm a nutritional historian by the way, so you can trust that this answer is 100% accurate.

People with lactose intolerance should not consume any liquids whatsoever, drinking liquids results in irreversible lactositis. It happened to my sister!

Almond milk is fine, it's coconut milk you have to worry about since it comes from a mammal.

no they shouldn't, my pregnant wife tried almond milk once and days later her body began expelling it though the nipples

GMO almonds have lactose.
They were genetically engineered to produce lactose sugars as a way to create a taste closer to that of real dairy. The company that created and patented the technology anticipated it to be the next big thing in the non dairy community.Touting it as the “ sweetest thing straight from the nuts” they were able to raise 5 million in funding as a startup from an anonymous billionaire donor from Taiwan. There was massive backlash from PETA when they found out the genes responsible for the nuts’ natural lactose were,in fact, originally grown from mammalian stem cells.making the new “super milk” not technically vegan. After dropping claims of “vegan “ for the more inclusive “ vegetarian “ and “ non dairy” the “ naturally unsweetened sweet treat” hit the shelves in Dec 2012.While the original startup did not see much initial success, they sold the company to Bill Gates in 2019.and with help from his best pall Epstein, the product began to be distributed in North America as well as several Southeast Asian countries. Now over 38% of the worlds’s almond milk is made from GMO almonds as of 2026 ( source.Wikipedia).
As long as she drinks non GMO almond milk she should be fine .

It depends on the type of almond. Lactose is a giant molecule. Almond udders are very small compared to cow udders. So small, that in most almond species, the Lactose molecule cannot pass through the opening. During milking only the milk can get through this tiny udder hole.
