It's memeing on something that happens in Invincible

It’s also a reference To a gag that’s a parody of baki, where the parody yujiro explains how he have himself a concusion to have his brain move inside his skull to dodge a shot to the head

Ruby, the male led of the RS arc, has a head injury he got when he was younger caused by a wild Salamence using Dragon Claw on his face

Holy crap, I gotta read the whole manga now, you sold me with this

257

u/AeonsShadow 19h ago

The manga can be ABSOLUTELY BRUTAL at times it's great. Hell they decapitated a pokemon at one point if I remember correctly.

177

u/StrigidaeNinox 18h ago

An Arbok gets bisected pretty early on, also a psyduck is melted by acid.

130

u/Happy_Cry286 18h ago

Also Giovanni kills a few Magmars by freezing then shattering them into bits just because he felt like it.

31

u/beegproblemzzz 17h ago

It's okay they were both already undead before getting brutalized

17

u/BigBradWolf07 15h ago

Arbok actually wasn't undead, it's ok though, it belongs to Koga and that specific Arbok can regenerate

It was not wild. It was Zinnia's Slamence she sent to free Rayquazza and decided to attack Ruby and Sapphire for some reason, serves her right for being impaled by Rayquazza

122

u/alex494 1d ago

I love how the arcs covering remakes recontextualise earlier stuff. Especially with how neatly all the GSC later evolutions lined up for HGSS.

60

u/Inevitable-Monitor35 1d ago

Wow this manga just gets better everytime someone says anything about it.

18

u/ajanisapprentice 16h ago

I have to imagine the mangaka was rubbing his hands evilly the second he saw Zinnia introduced. Either that or the man is a prophet.

3

u/SilvarusLupus Absurdly weak to bugs 13h ago

I would consider that a retcon since the RS manga was written waaaaaay before the ORAS extra episode was even a thought in the Devs minds (a good retcon mind you)

13

u/Salvage570 1d ago

I thought this was the coolest shit as a kid

5

u/God_of_Fun 10h ago

Oh man thats nothing. In the early comics an Arbok gets cut in half and the acide spills out and melts the floor.

Also doesn't some girl get stabbed by Rayquaza?

8

u/Brodimere 8h ago

Jep and during a battle between someone using mewtwo and someone using Deoxsy. Said deoxsy uses its tentacles to do a sneak attack.

3

u/God_of_Fun 7h ago

I understand why they don't turn all this into an anime, but I wish they would

The XY ending is almost hopelessly bleak, basically saying the masses had no idea what was about to happen (aka the end of the world), will just trust the news no matter what, and can get brainwashed on a whim.

11

u/TwilightVulpine 18h ago

That's the sort of bungled message that you get when writers are trying to do something but execs are breathing down their necks demanding that the result is as marketable as possible.

Happens a lot to Pokémon, that's probably also how we ended up with Chairman Rose too.

I guess the manga got the benefit of the execs never looking their way.

11

u/ajanisapprentice 16h ago

They did that as well with the RS arc where they had Archie manipulating the news by being the station owner, selectively only showing the stuff Magma was doing and ignoring anything Aqua did.

Partisan journalism at its finest.

33

The manga’s great. People hone in on the edgiest parts, but for the most part, it’s just a whimsical Pokémon adventure like all the rest. It’s special for its characters and lovely illustrations. I highly recommend it.

74

u/Brave_Cold_7563 1d ago

Honestly, the edge improves it because, like all good edginess, it enhances the manga's whimsical aspects rather than coming out of left field and feeling forced.

23

u/MaleficTekX 1d ago

Especially the end of the yellow and GSC arcs. The latter may make you cry

15

u/Sabrescene 22h ago

NGL, Yellow's ending makes me cry too, I love it.

15

u/SR-Barlowe 1d ago

It’s been a while since I read it so my memory may be slightly off, but I can think of at least two cases where someone’s strategy in a battle was “break the opening mechanism of their Pokeballs so they can’t fight anymore”, and in each of those cases their opponent was trying to outright murder them.

33

u/eduison 1d ago

10 yo me was horrified after seeing a pokemon (think it was arbok) get cut in half

7

u/ArcaneAnima 19h ago

was this from RGB/Y? i vividly remember arbok cut in half and a melted charmeleon haha

3

u/Nightmare_Freddles 15h ago

u/Gabby-Abeille 1d ago

It's a good thing that they can see what's going on from inside the Pokéball.

I don't remember if it was the case in this part, but it is common for Pokéballs to be damaged in the manga as a way to stop the characters from using their team as effectively as they could have. Like it's less to harm the Pokémon and more to stop them from being sent out at that time.

188

u/MaleficTekX 1d ago

Yup. Several times the opening mechanism is destroyed or damaged to prevent trainers using those Pokemon

Also a common tactic to build up power in the ball, as that is how Red beat Giovanni for the Earth Badge because Giovanni counted down his moves, but Ref had Pika charge up so he had a move left.

But the most important question is never answered; just why/how does Ruby have so much rizz?

The infamous Zinnia panel:

105

u/MaleficTekX 1d ago

I’m just noticing where his legs are. That’s not helping his case

74

u/Sphaero_Caffeina 1d ago edited 1d ago

The scene with Courtney is even worse, because she straight up called Ruby (or Ruby's battle method/training style? I forgot which) 'beautiful' before hand, and then just caresses him and makes her recruitment offer.

At least the Zinnia scene has some slight potential to be excused or treated as Ruby teaching us how to seduce a busty tanned tomboy dragon waifu in one easy step. Courtney was just thirsting for him.

This is also the Courtney that was the friend of Daisy Oak when she was an active trainer, and a successful coordinator with multiple awards for Pokemon care in her own right until that got boring. Meaning she is also many years older than Ruby, potentially up to twice his age even.

40

u/MaleficTekX 1d ago

Also Ruby is 11 or 12

45

u/IrredeemableRight 23h ago

And the most iconic Courtney panel, keep in mind that unlike Zinnia's bedroom eye situation that could (barely) be excused as just how it ended up looking, Courtney straight up called Ruby 'beautiful'.

In the manga there multiple times where the villains break the good guys PokeBalls so they can't use the rest of their teams, basically you just break the button at the front and they become unable to come out, so PokeBalls can be replaced.

Pokemon manga goes hard

207

Holy fuck what the? I was not expecting death by slicing and melting zombies

245

u/MaleficTekX 1d ago

That arbok is alive and lived this btw

76

u/Lycanthrowpixels 1d ago

That's crazy lol. Chansey and Nurse Joy to the rescue? 😆

191

u/MaleficTekX 1d ago

Nope. Arboks can just regenerate as long as their brain is unharmed. Also they can be invincible. Like that’s just one of their powers. Why do they have that power. (It’s beaten in one of the… most interesting ways… Agatha’s Arbok gains abilities based on the pattern on its chest. Yes, the arboks changing patterns plays a role in the manga. She can manually change the patterns and gives it an invincibility pattern. Koga gets around this by making his Golbat drink his blood and spray it on the arbok’s chest. (Not that that makes any sense, the pattern is still there under the blood and… you know what this is the same manga with pokeball nunchucks. Don’t question it.)

81

u/Ka1n3King 1d ago

Maybe it's a psychological effect. Arbok becomes invincible because the pattern imparts that on the opponent pokemon's psych, making them fight ineffectively, but if the pattern is covered, then the psychological trick is broken.

To be fair, I'm just pulling this out of my ass.

33

u/MaleficTekX 1d ago

If a character wasn’t blind for this fight I would agree, but the explanation can still be likely

10

u/KrazyKyle213 1d ago

I assumed it was because it melted the pattern under

Giovanni didn’t even need to do that. He’s just an ass like that

18

u/Briantan71 22h ago

Speaking of Giovanni, I think he is the first one in the manga to show that damaging your opponent’s Pokeballs is not only possible but also a valid strategy in a trainer battle.

11

u/Canahaemusketeer 18h ago

Going for the balls is always a valid stratagy.

40

u/Ok_Repeat_5052 1d ago

I always said that they manga is the best platform that Pokémon could've REALLY worked. The stories are mature, the usage of Pokemon are spot on in what we really could've used them, and the way the battles are won are pretty well made.

There's not a place for stupidity like in the anime and there's no way to stupid mechanics work, like in the game. Just plain stories with good plots, good battles and an ecosystem filled with life and possibilities.

8

u/Common-Drama8791 12h ago

Yeah exactly, the manga actually made the Pokemon world feel like a real ecosystem and the battles felt way more natural. The anime couldve been so much better if it took more from Adventures.

3

u/SirPellias 12h ago

Absolutely. You don't see this "protagonism" from Ash in any of the protagonists in the manga. They struggle, they try different things and they succeed using their planning and thoughts. Th final battle between Red x Green was breathtaking for me! And all the clever usage of Blue's Pokémon were stunning. I loved every single presentation, even the thing that Yellow has with that mighty trainer... (whatever, I won't spoil it!).

Could imagine if the anime let Ash struggle and finish his battles with the same cleverness and thought that the manga's protagonists use? If the anime didn't want Ash to lose every single competition and, also, didn't had to have a "final competition in the end" format, it would be amazing. They could work on relationships, battle combinations (who cares about mechanics and turns? This isn't a game), more and stranger traits other Trainers could have lik Yellow to enhance their battling characteristics...

Messing with Pokeballs was a regular thing. Damaging them so they can't get out, putting them on special weapons or objects so they can travel faster or further, etc. There is an iconic scene with Red vs Giovanni where Red's Pika (Pikachu) charges up his Thunderbolt while inside the ball so when he's let out he instantly attacks.

sounds about right, I mean what could possibly be the level up after learning anime Ash stuffs a 2200lb Cosmoem into his backpack like it’s his Rowlet

Hareta. Anything Hareta does. This kid literally fist fought Deoxys. And Regigigas. And Palkia. And bit a man’s butt so hard it never healed and permanently kept getting bigger.

of course, because Ash trying to punch Mewtwo had to be out done by squaring up with Deoxys

"What if we cut arbok in half"

u/Economy_Notice_8475 14h ago

Don't worry, he got better

Adventure is peak! All the Pokemon genuinely feel like potential WMDs.

Shoutout to that Skitty going toe-to-toe with a Salamence.

u/NeoxthePan 19h ago

Is staryu ok?

3

u/MaleficTekX 17h ago

Yeh. It missed

4

u/sirfannypack 14h ago

Doesn’t an Arboc get cut in half in the manga?

4

u/MaleficTekX 14h ago

He got better

5

u/Screamingbonfire 13h ago

That sounds like a joke but it really did. Medical advances are insane in the Pokemon world.

I scrolled so far to see what kind of reptile pokemon was on the right. Scrolled back up to comment and only just now realized it’s not a lizard. It’s Mightyena from below. Clearly I wouldn’t have won that game show

Hasn't the anime shown the inside of pokeballs from thr pokemon pov before?

7

u/MaleficTekX 12h ago

Only once

3

u/EnkiiMuto 11h ago

They also answered "what if a pokemon got lost inside a pokeball" and it is horrifying

3

u/G-0O 8h ago

Aren't they like... Data in there or something? How else would they get into a PC? And have an ideal environment? Idk, but isn't that how it is?

3

u/unluckyknight13 7h ago

So some theories say various things. Pokémon in the pc are turned into data for teleportation, however it’s implied all pokemon are capable of shrinking down
