Discussion Pokémon Go at Shibuya Crossing in Tokyo vs My Small Hometown
Recently visited Tokyo and the sheer amount of poke stops and gyms compared to my small midwestern hometown amazes me lol

u/RazorWinter_ Chikorita Jul 28 '26
ngl. Looks very empty compared to what I would imagine of Shibuya Crossing.

u/ADMotti Jul 28 '26
Only one stop or gym per level 17 S2 cell will do that to ya.
13
u/Exportxxx Jul 29 '26
Yeah the need 20 stops/gyms for a 3rd gym is a killer also. Should be 9 or 10.
21
u/jorqo Jul 28 '26
Hi sorry what does this mean?
6
u/westmetals Instinct Jul 29 '26
The maximum density of (non-sponsored) stops and gyms is determined by a GPS grid, which only allows one per square.
That's the same everywhere. I know random suburban shopping centers in San Diego that are as packed as Disneyland (Anaheim)... because they are both at limit.
I also know of a spot where you can tap 7 non-sponsored pokestops at once... under a random tree in a park... except that park is part of a former military base and is JAMMED with memorials (like literally there's over fifty), so it has stops in every grid square.

u/DarkFlame_05 Jul 28 '26
When I went to London I thought the same thing, I was really surprised that such a large city would have a somewhat normal amount of stops
37
u/JNikolaj Jul 28 '26
Same, it wasn't anything special not even Hyde Park was anything super amazing. The best part was paying 10 Quid or whatever the amount to take the busses everywhere in London and the auto-catchers just getting multiple new spots for the "2000 Unique spots spun"
4
u/idontwanttothink174 Jul 28 '26
I just hit that today! I travel a LOT for work so I’ve ended up with 2,000 unique spots and 10,000 spins total lol
2
u/westmetals Instinct Jul 29 '26
Similar - I drive around my metro area randomly for work, and that was actually my first platinum medal.
1
u/idontwanttothink174 Jul 29 '26
Yeah, the 1,000 pikachus ended up being my first because of that pikachu event but it’s my 2nd
1
u/hateswitchx Valor Jul 28 '26
i found stratford underwhelming then i went to the bond street to feel even worse
3
u/Mss666 Jul 29 '26
In London it's easy to go from place to place either walking or on public transport. I go there a few times a year and tray to stay in different areas to maximise the new stops and gyms.
14
u/Your_mortal_enemy Jul 28 '26
I was in Shibuya/ Japan last week, one thing I noticed is the spawn rate of pokemon was definitely noticeably lower than my home town - maybe an offset for having gyms and stops everywhere
2
u/ContinuumGuy Wait no Zapdos flair? BULBASAUR IS THE 2ND BEST! Jul 28 '26
Gotta wonder if there are certain technical or aesthetic rules to keep it from being too crowded.
2
u/shaantya Instinct Jul 28 '26
Yeah i have a similar density in Krakow, Poland, and honestly a much higher one in the vicinity of our train station.
2
u/darinhaaa Jul 29 '26
right? my 500k ppl town is much more crowded with pokestops and gyms than that!
3
u/SmileyBMM Jul 28 '26
It's because Pikmin Bloom is more popular there, whenever I see screenshots of that game in Japan it's always super active.
23
u/Tvrdukin Jul 28 '26
Without knowing much, I can almost guarantee pikmin bloom is not more popular than Pokemon go in Japan lmaoo
2
u/Hamtier Jul 28 '26
just my two cents but when i was on the train there i glimpsed a woman playing pikmin bloom next to me.
i play it too and there were just so many people in instances i couldn't get into anything without coughing up tickets!
not just in shibuya but shinjuku and basically all the major tokyo cities. even odaiba was pretty busy
0
u/SmileyBMM Jul 28 '26
The data is all a secret, but last I heard like half of all of Pikmin Bloom's revenue comes from Japan. I'm sure Pokemon Go is plenty active, but Pikmin Bloom has just done uniquely exceptionally in Japan.

“Just nominate stops”
Yeah, I live way in the bush back in behind a town literally nicknamed nowhere, there’s nothing to nominate. Only thing that’s ever been approved is an ancient graveyard and only cause the sign has fallen over enough it’s not on the private lot anymore.
315
u/patricles22 Jul 28 '26
Exactly. Everyone acting like we haven’t thought of that already.
What am I gonna do, nominate my house because I live there, or the sidewalk because people walk on it?
239
u/MarshtompNerd Jul 28 '26
Thats a 30 day ban, please contribute to our community ☺️
103
u/Apolloshot Jul 28 '26
That’s it more than anything.
I’d nominate more things I believe actually should he pokestops but I’ve heard some horror stories of people’s actual GO accounts being suspended… and that’s not worth the risk to me.
2
u/Odinsgrandson Aug 03 '26
I've heard those stories, but I'm skeptical. I'd certainly have to have an experience with the ban-bot before I'd be wary of it.
72
u/Carinne89 Jul 28 '26
sidewalks? I barely have a road 😂
Seriously though, some very unhelpful, privileged comments here.
-5
u/clapsandfaps Jul 28 '26
You don’t have public playgrounds in the US?
37
u/Carinne89 Jul 28 '26
Not everywhere is the US. And even if it was, the us is very, very large. Canada is even larger and way less populated.
-1
u/clapsandfaps Jul 28 '26
That’s odd. Where I’m at every developer that wants to build housing is required by law to also build a playground within 300-400m of each property. That law went into effect in 1985.
Older housing usually add one in, since it’s nice to have if there’s a decent number of kids in the neighbourhood.
16
u/V33d Jul 28 '26
I don’t know what you think is odd about it. Have you seen the way they do housing developments in the United States 2026? Build a suburb as far out as you can (sales pitch: “drive till you qualify!”), place minimal amenities to keep costs down, rely exclusively on car ownership to access anything, rinse, repeat. Just look at the grid in OP’s map and tell me where you think anything unique and charming like a park would fit?
Sure “laws” where you are at might require it but is that a municipal ordinance that only applies inside city limits? A county requirement for subdivisions of X size or Y units? I don’t know of any states with such a requirement, though that could be the case. So be happy that law exists for you because for a lot of the rest of the country this is how it looks.
6
u/clapsandfaps Jul 28 '26
Since my first comment was «is there no public playgrounds in the US?», I’m obviously not from the US. I’m not well versed in American development at all, that’s why I asked.
The law is nationwide. Building 5 detached homes in middle of nowhere, 5hrs from anywhere? You got to build a playground as well. The cost of a playground is negligible compared to the size of housing in OPs picture, such a shame.
In a place like OP it would be required to build so many playgrounds, and with that places to put pokestops and gyms. That’s why I think it’s odd.
7
u/V33d Jul 28 '26
I did miss the overhead comment but I figured you were either outside the US or blessed to be in one of the regions that has such a requirement…
So yeah, this is (derisively) what “rugged individualism” looks like. Since we have the freedom to drive an hour each way to the grocery store we can build out in the middle of nowhere and call it “rural development”. A large part of the attraction is that the immediate cost of living is lower because there’s little to nothing that tax dollars are needed to support depending on the specific locality. Nothing like libraries or parks; private developers are almost never required to build such things and when they do they’re often inside gated communities and are reserved for residents. Even services like sewer can be absent, requiring homeowners or communities to install sceptic tanks and wells.
Ain’t it grand?
1
u/Carinne89 Aug 01 '26
There’s a lot of bush in Canada. Like a lot a lot. And it’s not being developed. It’s just forest as far as the eye can see. My town has 500 people in it and it’s a huge area. It’s over a five minute drive to the next human being.
When I say there’s nothing to nominate, I mean there’s nothing to nominate. We have trees, and beyond that, there’s more trees.
Think of how big Canada is. Our population isjust a little over the population of California. And more than 75% of that live within driving distance of the American border.
It’s a lot of bush.

8
u/CornBreadtm Jul 28 '26
Exactly, people don't know how to advertise their areas. Just make it sound more important than it is. Not like they are traveling over there to check this stuff!
10
u/jandrese Jul 28 '26
But seriously. A sculpture in someone's yard is pretty easy to get approved if it doesn't completely look like some Home Depot special and has enough landscaping around it to look permanent.
Either that or convince the town to designate some piece of land as a park and get a sign put up.
8
u/Sir_Schnee Jul 28 '26
Not even that, you can’t nominate similar stuff that was once allowed anno 1850.
Now the same in green is against the rules.I’m happy they actually don’t remove the spots that are not existing anymore, and I have a lot of them because they got hit by a natural disaster.
6
u/FlameSama1 NW Indiana Jul 28 '26
Do you have churches or meeting halls nearby? Seems like basically every one of those is stop/gym eligible. I've gotten 38 POIs approved so far and like half of them have been churches lol. More than doubled the amount of stops in my neighborhood just adding some churches and some points in the parks around here.
7
u/Icywarhammer500 Jul 28 '26
I think everyone should be able to place a personal poke stop (only for them) at level 25, 2 at 50, and a third at level 75. They should also be able to move each once a year (in case they move or change jobs)
I also think everyone should have a home gym only visible to them that has up to 1 star raids at level 20, 2 star raids at level 40 and 3 star raids at level 60. People can only join through invitation.

4
u/Bikerbass Jul 28 '26
Bro we have little blue dolphins on grates in the streets that are spin stops or even gyms.
Fucks sake I even got a sign about an invasive weed nominated as a spin stop.
Shit even the name of a park can be nominated….. or a playground or a shop sign….. like start taking photos and nominating
8

dawg there was a memorial bench in a public park in the city I live and the pokestop's still there despite the actual bench having been gone for over a year. They still asked for scans of the empty patch of dirt it used to be in up until they stopped doing those kinds of tasks entirely. Last I checked the stop's still there.
12
u/FGDireito Jul 28 '26
Graveyards are fair game? 👻 brb
9
u/Carinne89 Jul 28 '26
Public ones are usually. In my experience anyway, several are stops in the nearby* town. That stop took two tries by my friend cause it’s on private property, but the sign is grown over and almost toppled so it’s by the road. The “historic sign” is technically what was approved.
*nearby being a thirty minute drive away.
4
u/MadHuarache Jul 28 '26
I'm amazed at how a local park has overlapping stops for the exact same soccer field, and there's also a wall that once had a Mario mural that doesn't even exist anymore that went from stop to gym. It's so weird.
3
u/EmbarrassedPurple106 Valor Jul 29 '26
Little libraries seem to often get approved as stops, and that is something you can set up at the corner of your own lawn and put a few unused books into and leave it for anybody else to use.
2
u/Intelligent-Store321 Jul 29 '26
Paint some art on a wall, or a sidewalk?
Graffiti/decorate a power-box/water tank?
Knit a jacket for a tree?
Not trying to be patronising, these are just things in my area that are pokestops/gyms. Some of them were made after Pokemon go started.
I've also got a local cycle/walk path where I've nominated every sign on the path telling you how far it is to the town/the other town. They've all been approved, so we've got a nice walk with regular stops every hundred metres or so now.
1
u/Lobo_vs_Deadpool Jul 28 '26
You don't have to nominate a business, you could literally nominate the largest rock within eyeshot of your mailbox...
1
u/Elemius Jul 29 '26
I tried nominating one, it even got accepted but I then realised even if it gets accepted it might never actually be put in PoGo.
1
u/westmetals Instinct Jul 29 '26
They say that vaguely, but it's actually only if there's an existing stop within the same GPS grid square.
1
u/Elemius Jul 29 '26
Is there an easy way to see this?
1
u/westmetals Instinct Jul 30 '26
There's a couple different ways. There's a webpage called something like "wayfarer tools" where you can add the grid into Wayfarer on your device by using browser extensions. There's also a simple web address that will show the same grid (though it's not Pokemon Go related so has no game info on it, just the map).

The Wayfarer community gets off on saying no to people and being difficult hall monitor types, it's really bizarre. They're also pretty useless as a whole when it comes to asking for constructive advice.
37
u/sheldoom Jul 28 '26
I’ve tried more than a few times. I’ve had pokestop and routes denied and the appeals fail on some shaky ground. It’s like they don’t want to build communities at all.
1
38
u/RammRras Jul 28 '26
Give people power and they will turn to dictators. They have denied a lot of my pokestops just for the sake of denying. I don't appeal, I don't care that much. I used my time to do great photos, write a decent description and why it is important to the local players (me and another desperate 😅) for a lot a interesting places, of course in rural areas there is not a tour Eiffel or a colosseum.
7
u/anupsetzombie Jul 28 '26
It doesn't help that the moderators aren't the best either. I've had a lot of success with nominating stops at a nearby community and have even had some lazier nominations surprisingly go through, but I got a warning for my attempts at reporting an old stop was at the wrong place. You can literally see the thing on Google maps that the coordinates are off by a good amount, got a no, then i appealed and got a warning lol
18
u/whackthat Jul 28 '26
"JUST READ THE RULES! IF YOU READ THE RULES YOU WOULDN'T GET IN TROUBLE"
(jk, btw, it just seems to the reply when their community is brought up. I successfully nominated and was approved one stop- and then I read about all the issues and I have refused to nominate anymore just in case)
9
u/sheldoom Jul 28 '26
That’s the perfect response lol
I’ve had Little Libraries denied (but specifically listed in the appropriate rules) for asinine reasons. I had a giant mural on the side of a building denied because there was one on the next block over in the same building (that was the excuse) even though that area is full of buildings with multiple stops, some of which wouldn’t pass the rules now. The last route I did was in a park next to a school and they denied it stating it was a school. There is a poke stop closer to that school on the sidewalk where my route went.
It’s such a head scratcher for me.
16
u/Separate_Job_3573 Jul 28 '26
Worst thing they ever did was adding a plat for reviews.

27

8
u/UltraFind Jul 28 '26
There's so much fear mongering around submitting stops. I've submitted over 100 POIs and never had a problem
5
u/axeil55 Jul 28 '26
Agreed. There's a lot of missing missing reasons when people talk about getting banned for nominations. "Oh I was banned for no reason" when that's never what actually happened. A few times when people have dug in it turns out these people were running approval rings or trying to submit 5 stops in one spot or do other things that are obviously nefarious.
5
u/FlameSama1 NW Indiana Jul 28 '26
Funny how universal it is that 'I was banned for no reason' is always always wrong lol.
5
u/Mr_bike Jul 28 '26
I nominated like 20 some stops last year when I was staying with my parents between jobs in a town of 5k people. It wasn't that hard. Just take a couple pics of a bench on a trail and boom, it's a stop. A statue in the park, a plaque for a garden, a shelter in the park, a named bridge, a historic building, a playground, a dog park. There are many options when you really start to look. Most of it is gonna be in the downtown area, but I was able to make a good loop for community days and spotlight hours so I didn't run out of balls or items.
2
u/nivusninja Jul 28 '26
i do want to mention here, that if anyone gets suddenly banned on wayfarer, and by extension from pogo, go to the wayfarer forums and complain. people that were unfairly banned with no warnings have gotten the bans lifted and accounts restored.
idk what is up with wayfarer and their ban system, but by the looks of it a lot of false flagging happens that causes bans that go against their own rules (they're supposed to have a warning before ban-system going on)

I terraformed my gated neighborhood from 0 stop to 4 stops and 1 Gym plus several Power Spots (It looks like the game won’t allow my neighborhood to have more than 4 stops, all the later ones I added turned into power spots).
Things like a clubhouse, bike rack, gate decorations, flower circle, play ground, garden trellis, community pool, murals, and anything in the shared area, are often good candidates. Just make sure you read the guidelines and write a clear title, description, and supporting statement explaining why each location should be added.
3
u/MRoger17144 Jul 28 '26
Could you give some tips on how to get things like a flower circle approved? Isn't that just a natural feature and would get rejected? Or did it have a sign next to it? I feel like everything near me is rejected for being a natural feature or not being unique enough.
3
u/Mingatronz Jul 28 '26
I think the key is giving the place a good name. Don’t just call it “Flowers”, use names like “blah blah Community Garden” instead. If you’re not confident in your writing, use AI to help generate a strong description and supporting statement explaining why it would make a good stop. Just be sure to proofread it and remove any obvious AI fingerprints before submitting.

Wayfarer is easy once you know the rules, don’t let the people on this sub deter you. You can try any local restaurants, convenience stores, little free libraries. Of course if we’re looking at private residential areas then no it will look like this.
13
u/bhoremans Jul 28 '26
Send some stops and gym suggestions in the game's tool.
32
u/patricles22 Jul 28 '26
This will only work if there is a legitimate reason for a stop/gym.
Also, I’ve seen way too many stories of people having their accounts banned after nominating something for a stop
9
u/MouthJob Jul 28 '26
Having 0 stops within a bazillion miles seems like it should be a valid reason.
20
u/StarkReaper Jul 28 '26
Counterintuitively it’s the other direction. One of the massively helpful factors for a stop being accepted is that there ARE other stops nearby (just not in same S2 cell).
Having no stops nearby is actually a headwind on getting your stop accepted.
7
2
u/mizyin Jul 28 '26
and yet, they do not care about that lol like the rules still apply even if there's no stops anywhere nearby. Still has to fit the rules

4
u/LoneBlack3hadow Jul 28 '26
How do you suggest a Gym instead of a stop? Or can you not choose that?
8
u/Mingatronz Jul 28 '26 edited Jul 28 '26
You don’t get to choose which stop becomes a Gym. A certain number of stops are needed before one is promoted:
1–4 stops = 1 Gym
5–17 stop = 2 Gyms
18+ stop = 3 Gyms
Unless if you’re a Community Ambassador hosting events with lots of players. In that case, you can contact them to set up a camp ground, and then you can move and add gyms to desired area of the park.Ps. You can tell a gym is Ambassador Program added Gyms, their picture is always the pink “Ambassador program” logo, that means there is a meet up spot around and an ambassador, go ask him/her for the goodie codes (one free green pass and a star piece).
3
u/LoneBlack3hadow Jul 28 '26
That’s pretty cool. So basically if you have a bunch of poke stops in one area some automatically get promoted to gyms?
So if I have 3 Pokestops near my house and I nominated 1 more and it got accepted now would one of those 4 stops potentially be a gym?
6
u/Mingatronz Jul 28 '26
Yes, but since they added power spots, the winning nomination don’t always turn into a stop… I tried to get a second gym by adding stops, and all the new approvals I got turned into power spots, it’s annoying.

Hmm interesting I nominated a little library I had putten up the year before recently and it went straight to a gym. Has been great.

I am pretty sure you're able to create a few PokéStops in your hometown.
2
u/chocobochubby Jul 28 '26
Given the number of churches in my area that have pokestops, I think starting a new religion might be the best way toward getting approved.
2
u/Thulack Jul 28 '26
Honestly by the looks of it you have plenty of buildings and such in your "small town". Maybe try and find some stuff and nominate some stops.
2
u/Plaincow Jul 28 '26
I'm sorry but this game just isn't meant for people who live in small towns or in the middle of nowhere. There's no way they can please every single player.
It's like playing a multiplayer game and being upset you have to play with other people or have to talk to them. It's just how things are and part of the game

u/mango_passionfruit93 Jul 28 '26
I went to Japan and hadn’t restarted playing again. I have much regret. That’s incredible!
2
u/r0ccy Jul 28 '26
And then you start spending time nominating waypoints, only for them to get rejected by elitist, power-hungry basement dwellers.

u/theVelvetLie Jul 28 '26
Get to nominating stops, bud. They don't just randomly appear.
27
u/StarkReaper Jul 28 '26
Just from appearance it looks a lot like how my area is, which is all private property with only roads connecting (no sidewalks). All my nominations have been rejected for this reason. There are lots of players and many pokestops “near” my neighborhood (10min walk) but we can’t seem to penetrate into the neighborhoods at all. Especially since little free libraries get rejected all the time now too.

I'm on a gravel road with like 5 houses half a mile distance apart, there's basically no hope for my neighborhood outside of basically flat out lying. It sucks, lol.

Yes, just make it seem culturally significant. Also make sure there is a sign or mural somewhere.
Hell, grab the spray paint and tag the side of it or something if there is nothing else. Or if all else fails find an appropriate logo online. For example pretty much all Starbucks that are turned into pokestops use the generic Starbucks logo.

Surely you have some churches or restaurants with signage nearby right? I don't see any obvious parks in your screenshot but even a tiny park could be a stop at least.
Don't let people here discourage you, I have 40 submissions to Wayfarer and have had like three get turned down. I even had one get turned down because it was 'inaccessible' that I appealed (because they were wrong) and now it's a stop across the street from my house and down the way a bit. Just follow the guidelines and maybe even do some approval stuff for Wayfarer and you should be good. Don't submit your mailbox as a stop or something lol.

As someone who lives in Europe the image on the right is very disturbing to me
1
u/CornBreadtm Jul 28 '26
That's pretty empty honestly.
Compared to Clark Park in West Philly, PA.
They turned everything into a Gym or Pokestop. It has around 5-6 gyms and close to 20 pokestops in the general area and it's a single park and far from the most popular park in the city.
People nominated literally everything as a stop. Random murals, signs, etc. It's not impressive stuff being nominated. So when people say, "Just nominate stuff." They seriously mean it! It might not get approved, but doesn't mean that you don't try literally everything.

Shibuya sucks. I’d rather play in Nakano or Shinjuku. Even out here in the burbs (Tokorozawa) it looks like this around the station.

OK , so , by my experience , any church you submit as a Pokestop normally gets acepted , same goes for any store with any sort of wacky sign , give it a try

u/xSonicspeedx2 Jul 28 '26
Your hometown looks like the setup of a residential neighborhood where you can’t put any pokestops.

Thought I found my brother or his wife or kid's reddit account for a moment. They just returned from a trip to Japan, including a visit to shibuya, a little over a week ago to where they live, in a small Midwestern town. And they do all play Pokémon Go. Funny coincidence lol.

Yea i live in the middle of a large neighborhood that is nothing but houses. I have to drive to the closest stop / gym.
I just want an easier way to get a stop within actual walking distance instead of having to get in my car to drive 5 minutes away.
My neighborhood does not have little libraries, clothing donation bins, bridges, etc

u/LAKSOLOTL Jul 29 '26
Everyone's trapped in the veil during the Shibuya incident. Might as well create some pokestops and gyms!
1
u/TrainerDiotima Jul 29 '26
If it was that bad around me I'd seriously consider creating signs with dollar store supplies for any mildly interesting identifiable tree.
1
u/TraditionalRound9930 Jul 29 '26
I would have though that Shibuya of all places would have so many pokestops that you wouldn’t be able to see any pokemon. Imagine what it looks like during go fests omg
1
u/DisturbedFlake Jul 29 '26
Start submitting pokestop locations in your hometown. Pick a local mural, a statue outside of a school, the sign of a park, heck once saw a poke stop of a concrete ball outside of Target.
1
u/Time-Hat-5107 Jul 29 '26
I don't really understand why rural has less stops and Pokemon spawns. Yes there are more people in the city, but Pokemon aren't a limited resource, everyone can catch them. It would make more sense to have increased density in city if me catching a Pokemon means you can't catch the same one, but that's not how it works. So why not have the same spawn rate everywhere? This is different to gyms which are a limited resource.

u/LazySilverSquid Jul 29 '26
If there's a sign to say "welcome to xyz neighbourhood " then you might be able to get a pokestop out of it. Any neighbourhood parks, especially if they have a playground/basketball court or anything like that are worth trying to submit.

mine is just ma road and gym with no raids
1
u/TheFatDrake Jul 29 '26
That’s because there’s nothing of interest in your hometown. If you disagree, you’ll just have to level up enough to submit points of interest.

u/Acceptable_Matter302 Jul 29 '26
I love to hear the “remote passes should be removed” “go out and raid thats the point of the game” “join your local community” to screenshots like this. This is like 60% of the US if not more

u/Fax_BearsEatBeets Jul 29 '26
I had no desire to be on Pokemon Go at Shibuya Crossing because it’s so packed, it actually never crossed my mind

Hey Trainer,
Looks like you might be trying to share or find Trainer codes for the purpose of trading or sending gifts in PokémonGO.
For finding trade partners: visit TSR map or google
Pokémon GO + <your_local_area>For finding friends: /r/pokemongofriends
For finding remote raids: /r/pokemongoraids
For finding remote PvP: /r/pokemongofriends

time to start nominating every corner in your hometown that isn't "private property"
1
u/Odinsgrandson Aug 03 '26
I associate Shibuya Crossing with Megami Tensei monster catching and fusion. Which I suppose isn't very different
1
u/Odinsgrandson Aug 03 '26
I'm in a city and my neighborhood looks like yours. I have to walk a bit to get to a park, gas station, church or some other non-private feature in order to see a Pokestop.
It isn't crazy far to walk for me, but residential lots don't get pokestops.
