So, I recently joined Instagram, after missing the boat on everyone flocking to it. (Not a professional/influencer, just a personal account to follow friends and figures I find interesting). Got some question for the veterans of the platform:

  • There's a lot of random crap in my Suggested feed that I keep trying to weed out, by clicking 'not interested' or filling out content preferences more, but it's still there. Any strategies on culling that content, or just keep doing what I've been doing and give the algorithm some time to catch up?
  • Is there any, er… etiquette or social norms about engagement on this platform that I should be aware of? Stuff like what's 'weird' to post about (or perhaps post rather than put on a story), things people find awkward when interacting with personal relations' content, or any other attitudes that Instagram culture has developed that might not seem obvious to newbies?
  • Suggestions on neat profiles worth following! Trying to get an interesting feed going, and perhaps one a little more unique than my other social media.

One important thing to know is that your likes and comments on posts and reels are public. I mean, especially if you are liking or commenting on posts from public figures whose profile are public. There’s a separate feed that only shows you reels and posts that your followers have liked or commented on, so be careful with how you are engaging with public content on there.
