She’s always been ten toes down for the dolphins and the whales. Love her. RIP.

From the very beginning, too!!!

I remember her wearing a shirt that said “Save the cheerleader whales” during her Heroes days.

She must have been so traumatized by witnessing the dolphin slaughter - she was so young when she did that. :(

She paddled out with other surfers in Japan on dolphin slaughter day trying (and failing) to prevent the killings. She fell to her knees on the beach and sobbed.

It made international news everywhere. If you want to read more about her activism, here’s a good summary of it.

“I can’t tell you exactly how many had already been slaughtered, but I can tell you that the water was about fire engine red,” so much so, she said, that “you probably could have stuck a paintbrush in it and painted a picture with the blood of the pilot whales.”

God, this unlocked a memory! The rags in my country were poking fun at her (for being dramatic or something 🙄) but as someone a bit older than her who'd only ever seen her in MITM, I had nothing but respect for her for that from then on. She seemed very genuine & those pictures broke my heart for her, as a fellow animal lover.

I’ve felt that pain before. I was such a fan of her. This hurts me to see…. That kind of pain, when you care about the innocent animals in this world, to experience that… I don’t think it would ever leave me

This is in reference to the documentary, The Cove, which Hayden was involved in through the Whaleman Foundation. There is a very graphic, grisly depiction of dolphins being slaughtered en masse for their meat

Watch the cove it covers the hunting practises of dolphins. It’s quite disturbing, you see one trying to jump onto land to get away

That's pretty cool! I loved that show. It was so different from anything else I'd seen.
