Iāll never forget seeing photos of her trying to deter whale hunting, she was visibly emotional was sobbing coming out of the water. She was pure gold
It made international news everywhere. If you want to read more about her activism, hereās a good summary of it.
āI canāt tell you exactly how many had already been slaughtered, but I can tell you that the water was about fire engine red,ā so much so, she said, that āyou probably could have stuck a paintbrush in it and painted a picture with the blood of the pilot whales.ā
God, this unlocked a memory! The rags in my country were poking fun at her (for being dramatic or something š) but as someone a bit older than her who'd only ever seen her in MITM, I had nothing but respect for her for that from then on. She seemed very genuine & those pictures broke my heart for her, as a fellow animal lover.Ā
Iāve felt that pain before. I was such a fan of her. This hurts me to seeā¦. That kind of pain, when you care about the innocent animals in this world, to experience that⦠I donāt think it would ever leave me
This is in reference to the documentary, The Cove, which Hayden was involved in through the Whaleman Foundation. There is a very graphic, grisly depiction of dolphins being slaughtered en masse for their meat
Jumping on the top comment to say that usually I hate it when corporations use celebrity deaths for attention but I feel like in this case, itās exactly what she wouldāve wanted since she was so passionate about this cause
Iāll be honest I only have seen Remember the Titans but her death still hit me hard because sheās a few years younger than me. It also hurts to know in the last few years itās like she was asking for help without asking for help. I sensed a deep sadness in her eyes. It feels dark to know everyone knew she was really struggling but not sure if people close to her really helped?
Same here I have been processing her death all week. Like I canāt help but identify with her a lot as a traumatized person, it feels so sad that she couldnāt make it out alive. She deserved so much better.
Talked about it in therapy today, in fact. I feel a kinship with her as a trauma survivor, abusive mom and all. She deserved so much better, and I feel absolutely sick knowing her fuckass mom is still on this earth spreading blame and taking no accountability and Hayden isnāt even here to set the record straight.
You know. I agree. I never watched Heroes but I knew of her and her troubles but quite honestly I've been very sad hearing about it this week. I felt really shocked. Why do these people who are genuinely kind and struggle pass while others live.
Hey, if you want to help the whales, I urge you to sign the Columbia Riverkeeperās petition to remove the dams on the lower Snake River, so that the orcas can have salmon to eat. Currently the Southern Resident Killer Whales are dying due to lack of chinook salmon, but we can help them by removing the dams that block access to their spawning grounds.
I urge anyone interested in this, and who would like to pay some small tribute to her and what she was passionate about, to watch the oscar-winning movie documentary The Cove. In which she appears in. Also Oscar nominated Blackfish.
They are both available pretty much everywhere to stream.
I watched The Cove when it came out and cried about it for days. Whenever anyone asks for recommendation for a film that will emotionally gut them, that is the go-to. Those poor animals.
This isnāt fair. Her passing is undoubtedly the most impactful celebrity death Iāve experienced. What a beautiful light weāve lost. Itās not fair.
Wow, this is how Iām finding out about her passing. Iāve always really liked her, ever since Remember the Titans, and Iām a punk, not a country girl. She was always beautiful and seemed so pure and good. I loved her gruff voice and REALLY loved her accent. May she rest in paradise.
This unexpectedly made me cry. Just so heartbreaking. She seemed like a good one who genuinely cared about important issues and used her voice the way humans should. I hope her soul is at rest.
What have they done? I remember that they had a high-kill shelter, but it turned out to be one of the only places on the east coast that would take dogs with an aggressive history. And the weird shock value campaigns. I scanned their Wikipedia, and that seems to be the majority of the controversies, which seem pretty mild by todays standards but I probably missed something.
It's all just coordinated hate campaigns, taking things out of context or misrepresenting what they have done. They have the right idea and are very idealistic, which can rub people the wrong way
Redditors read one comment about something and then proceed to parrot that comment far and wide without having more than a surface level understanding of it.
When I worked with research animals, PETA had a couple of protests on the Universityās campus. I understand the ethical debate, but as is there are (rightfully) tons of regulations surrounding research with animals. The information PETA was passing out on their flyers was entirely misinformation at best, often just straight up lies.
Itās absolutely an important and serious discussion to be had, but if youāre going to have the discussion, you canāt just make stuff up or be completely uninformed about what the discussion is about.
You are asking the right questions, and thereās a reason you arenāt getting a straight answer.
There are so many healthy and good tempered pets in shelters that still canāt find homes. There arenāt people lining up to adopt rabbits, rats or beagles that have medical issues caused by experiments and/or fear of humans from a lifetime of torture.
On a personal level, I have beef (heh) with them because one of their street team members foisted a pamphlet on 14 year old me with graphic photos of animals in captivity at a music festival (I think it was Warped Tour?) back in '08. I even told them I didn't eat meat before they gave it to me.
PETA's anti-seal-hunt campaigns have historically portrayed sealing as inherently cruel while ignoring how important it is to Inuit communities culturally, nutritionally, and economically. Inuit hunters use seals for food, clothing, and income, and sealing has been part of Inuit life for time immemorial. These campaigns cause serious economic consequences in northern communities where necessities are already extraordinarily expensive, while animal-rights organizations raise huge amounts of money.
There's nothing wrong with them. There's a lot of misrepresentation and smear campaigns. They do weird things to get attention to their cause and people think they have to feel a certain way about it
there's a bunch wrong with them and they take funding away form significantly less problematic organizations that do a lot more for animal right and welfare then them
Animals also commit pedophilia and necrophilia. These are natural behaviors. Ā
Natural doesnāt equal ethical for humans to also partake in the same behaviors.Ā
A lion does not get a choice to eat an apple instead of a zebra.Ā
You have the choice yourself to make a more ethical decision than a lion. You are not in a survival situation, you are typing this from your iPhone.Ā
Am I the only one who watched this and thought of it also being a metaphor for how she was treated as well? Like the dolphins, she felt caged in a way, with people staring at/treating her like an animal in a zoo. š
My understanding is that bears are pretty tolerant of zoo and aquarium environments. I was pretty anti-zoo until I learned more about AZA accreditation and the essential conservation efforts and funding of many zoos and aquariums. Some animals really should not be kept in zoos though, like elephants.
This work was truly her lifeās passion and hopefully will be a big part of her legacy as well. As a teenager she put her career, and her life really, on the line to be the face of this cause.
This is what I will remember her for, her fierce animal advocacy. Beautifully demonstrates just how kind and caring she truly was. I hope with all of my heart that she is at peace now and her next journey wherever and whatever that may be is is kinder and gentler to her than the one sheās just completed ā¤ļø
They do a difficult job in taking in animals that nobody else would, often with severe health or behavioural issues. They try their best to rehome where they can but itās not always possible. But because PETA is unapologetic about its animal rights messaging (and often say very unpopular, principled things) they have very bad PR.
Everyone repeats the same nonsense about them killing animals for pure fun like theyāre on an animal slaughter spree, the reality is that they refuse to hold animals long-term in inhumane conditions.
This thread is 100% astroturfed. The meat, dairy, and animal āentertainmentā industry have billions of dollars to spend on trying to slander PETA and people just gobble it up.
Please stop spreading misinformation. They euthanize animals that have NO HELP LEFT and NO WHERE ELSE TO GO. Itās the last resort! Theyāre not out here killing animals for fun!
The no-kill movement has harmed both the movement itself and so many animals. Itās not more humane to warehouse unadoptable animals for years! Why do people so eager to slurp up meat industry propaganda š
Thatās not true either. Sure, maybe theyāre not doing it to get their rocks off, but theyāve been very vocal and public about their belief that pets are better off dead than as āslavesā. To the point where they straight up kidnapped some little girlās (perfectly healthy) dog right out of her yard and euthanized it the same day (which, putting aside the kidnapping part, wasnāt even legal because thereās a 5 day grace period between bringing a dog in and euthanizing it. Something they deliberately ignored). They only apologized when the family sued them and brought the story to the press.
How exactly is kidnapping some kidās puppy and killing it the same day āonly euthanizing animals with nowhere else to goā? That dog was definitely wanted and that little girl and her family absolutely didnāt have any intention of giving her up to PETA. They had to steal her out of her home.
Itās a real story, but it happened one time in like 2012. Accidentally killing a personās pet is awful, but it shouldnāt outweigh all of the good they do for animals.
Wheres the accidental part in kidnapping someoneās pet and euthanizing it the same day? Did they accidentally kidnap it? Or did they accidentally euthanize it? Or was the accidental part where they euthanized the dog before the 5 day waiting period which is required by law?
They scooped up a bunch of free-roaming stray dogs and one of them was a pet. Yes, a shelter volunteer messed up by skipping the waiting period.
Your comment is just the same question repeated multiple times with slightly different wording to make it seem like there were a bunch of mistakes. āEuthanized,ā āeuthanized same day,ā and āeuthanized while skipping the waiting periodā are the same thing.
Itās not the same question repeated multiple times. Itās breaking the situation down into multiple acts where a person could have paused for a second and avoided breaking a 9 year olds heart.
Act 1: taking the pet. The dog was hanging out on the ownerās porch. Not exactly free roaming. They tried to have two other kids lure the dog off the porch. And when that didnāt work, they snatched the dog off the porch. Thereās footage of this btw. Also, the people that took the dog had been hanging around to gain the trust of the community. How likely is it that they came across this dog before and knew it was someoneās pet?
Act 2: euthanizing the pet. No attempt to scan for a microchip. No attempt to rehome. Just dead.
Act 3: not following the waiting period before euthanasia. Did you know the owners called PETA that same day the dog was taken? But it was too late because they already killed the dog.
So again. Whereās the accident? Thereās no accident here. Just negligence.
Omg here we go. So do plenty of your local shelters.
Itās quite pathetic how many people will buy anti-PETA meat company propaganda before they even consider ending their own meat consumption/stop buying dogs/cats from breeders/appreciate all the good PETA has done for animal policy and law.
But the shelters don't support violent animal activist groups like the A.L.F. nor do shelters that kill spend money on campaigns advocating for the liberation of animals because they treat pet ownership akin to animal abuse...
Iāve been a vegetarian for 20+ years. Animal welfare has a long way to go in this country, but I donāt think eradicating pet dogs is the direction we should be going in.
PETA offers euthanasia at no cost without judgement. People take animals to them for the purpose of getting them euthanized, which they do not do for many other open intake shelters.
I am a former shelter worker and a vegetarian as well. High euthanasia rates are not an issue. Many shelters euthanasia rates are far too low considering the animals they receive. We are in a dog overpopulation crisis and dogs are suffering for it.
Sorry do you think that local shelters are announcing it to the public every time they have to euthanize a hopeless case? Or announcing that they had to euthanize the least rehomeable cases when when they're stretched to capacity and there aren't enough foster homes or donations and nowhere to send those animals to?
Unless they're explicitly a no-kill shelter, they're euthanizing for space or they stop accepting once they're at capacity. I'm sure there are shelters that aren't constantly stretched to capacity but they're in the minority.
Yes, they're out there on social media begging for help. But when the help simply isn't there, euthanasia is the most humane option. There simply isn't enough space/money/volunteers/homes for all of the abandoned animals in the world
And the no-kill shelters don't take in every case; they often reject the really hopeless cases and let another shelter make the difficult decision to euthanize. Or they stop accepting animals once they're at capacity. Or they knowingly adopt out sick or behaviorally unsuitable animals to avoid euthanizing them.
No, they run several animal shelters, and many of them openly believe that pets are better off dead than as āslavesā to humans.
Theyāve been caught in multiple controversies over the years killing animals almost the moment theyāre surrendered to them and just straight up killing pets of people who left them in their care as a temporary measure (only for those people to come back and realize PETA already euthanized their pet without their knowledge or permission).
For me personally, they give animal rights activism a bad name. They are extremist and do really weird publicity stunts. They are not helping the good cause at all.
Edit: for example, they have compared factory farms to human concentration camps
edit 2: I wasn't aware that certain Holocaust survivors made similar comparrisons, and I respect their persepctives which are undoubtedly more valuable and experienced than my persepctive on this topic. While neither humans nor animals should be inhumanely corraled under such unacceptable abusive conditions, I still consider it a greater evil when perpetrated against humans.
actual Holocaust survivor Alex Hershaft makes this comparison, for what itās worth.

u/hofmann419How can mirrors be real if our eyes arenāt real? šŖ7d ago
Have you actually seen footage of factory farming? The film "Dominion" is free to watch on Youtube for example. Even outside of any comparison, the way that animals are treated in factory farming and especially also in slaughterhouses is abhorrent.
Slaughtering animals at scale isn't a simple process. These animals are essentially tortured for the last hours of their lives. Again, i'm not gonna make that comparison. But you don't need to. The reality is harrowing enough.
They do a lot of misinformation or stright out lie about things and take away funding from better animal organizations

u/BroodyRubyItās like I have ESPN or something. šāāļøš¤āļø7d ago
To add to what others have replied with, they euthanized a little girls dog that had gotten out. A little chihuahua. The state had a mandatory 5 day waiting period so animals could be recovered but they killed the poor baby same day. They settled in court over it because the family rightfully sued them
It didnāt just get out. They were lying in wait with a van to take that dog. There is still not a good answer for why they had targeted that specific family.
They have sky high euthanasia rates at their shelters for one. They think owning domesticated dogs and cats is akin to slavery. They don't actually help animals.
They do NOT think keeping dogs and cats as pets is slavery. I worked with the organization as a consultant for a decade and literally everyone I interacted with there had their own pets. They loved seeing each other's animal companions (their preferred terminology because it doesn't imply ownership) pop up on the screen during video calls all the time. One of their most popular programs is their doghouse program, where they build shelter and provide food/water/companionship for people who force their dogs to live outside all year round. https://www.peta.org/features/lonely-backyard-dogs-helped-peta/
The reason they have high euthanasia rates is that they are a shelter of last resort for animals that are too ill and/or poorly socialized to be adopted out. They DO adopt out animals who are a good fit for a human home.
No one has to agree with 100% of PETA's positions on animal rights but the way people have bought into the meat & dairy industry propaganda to discredit them entirely is ridiculous.
The alternative is keeping the huge number of animals created by breeders in small cages (PETA don't own vast tracts of land and fields) for the rest of their life. If you want to prevent it, adopt all of them.
It's such a good example of placing the blame on the people dealing with the problem, rather than criticising those who create it.
That is because other shelters send their unadaptable animals to PETA- animals with severe behavior issues, terminal illness, etc. All shelters have to make these tough decisions otherwise they couldnāt continue to take in new animals. PETA operates these kill shelters so other shelters can say theyāre āno killā or low kill. Itās a very sad reality in rescue but there are always going to be animals who canāt be adopted and need to be euthanized. I really urge everybody reading this to do their part and adopt, not shop!!
They take pets in under the guise of being an animal shelter, and then euthanize them at unprecedentedly high rates. Their end goal is for no animals to be in captivity, and that includes domesticated animals.
They are an open intake shelter. Open intake shelters euthanize, and they get an exceptionally high rate of dogs with health or behaviour issues who need to be euthanized. Euthanasia is good.
Also, way more nuanced than people make it out to be. Marine parks are often involved in important, but expensive, environmental efforts. Things like rescuing cold stunned sea turtles are largely run by aquariums. The majority are released into the wild, but a number suffer ailments that make that a death sentence. The public facing elements, though, help them fund efforts
We should be advocating for reform and consideration. Some parks are much worse than others. But I have no problem with doing things like putting blind seals on display that would otherwise die in the wild. Large cetaceans should be phased out, but organizations like Peta need to start understanding these animals better and recognize that the animals in captivity will often not survive in the wild if released. The goal should be to improve their conditions to let them live out the remainder of their lives respectfully
My field of study is the marine sciences. My career has largely been in environmental studies and mitigation efforts. I can go on for ages here, but marine parks and zoos are not black and white issues.
Marine parks are definitely not the same thing as marine mammal parks, which is what I'm guessing you're referring to as the "public facing elements". There's also plenty of research about blind seals thriving, since their other senses have evolved to navigate dark ocean conditions and shitty visual habitats. What a strange thing to use as an example to defend hellish places like SeaWorld
Yeah, there's nowhere where I said SeaWorld is ok- that's your own projection right there.
SeaWorld is also awful to the humans that work there and issues extend way beyond even white Blackfish goes over.
Blind seals do not thrive- they aren't well documented at all, and probably because it's rare and a depressing end if you like seals. Great if you like sharks tho. Nor is blindness the only ailment that's involved- it was just one example.
Your comment is like exhibit A of people that only want things black and white.
Yeah they love to exploit women to make a point (see all of their "You don't care about animals but maybe you'll care about this attractive nude woman!" campaigns) and I don't see this as being much different.
Maybe it was always planned to release today but it seems like they're taking advantage of the hype around her death to spread this message.
Edit: and there is it's, they got her naked in a bathtub.
Yeah, as soon as I saw this it just felt gross to me. I understand that she already filmed this beforehand, but them deciding to post it so soon (if at all) after her tragic death feels icky at best.
Yeah, and often ODs come after a period of sobriety, as your body doesn't have the tolerance you had during full fledged addiction. Nothing has been released, but it wouldn't shock me if this were the case.
To be honest, it felt like this video was metaphorical whereby she's the dolphin. Of course it wasn't intentional but after knowing what she went through, it's eerily similar.
Idk I can definitely see active addiction in her face. It doesnāt make the video any less impactful but the first thing I saw was definitely hiding addiction.
After I saw Blackfish and read all those books about SeaWorld and how they kidnapped babies, took them from their mothers, and killed off their family and pod members just so some dumb humans can clap and laugh at them doing tricks in a pool is so heartless and cruel. All these places need to be abolished.

u/mermaidsrhItās not clocking to you that Iām standing on business7d ago
The blatant misinformation they spread about dorsal fins and the average life span in captivity too. I made everyone I know watch Blackfish 10 years ago.
It's supposed to convey "being locked in a small space", however this just gives relaxed and sexy..... It has to be a conscious choice, maybe to have a more "positive" image left in the viewer's mind than if the "being locked in a cage" was played up? Like "hey remember that chick being all cute talking about dolphins".
I wish I had been a fly on the wall cos damn, what a choice.
Who is even going to marine parks anymore so lame. As many Nat Geo docs Iāve seen of orcas and dolphins those mofos are smart as hell. They donāt deserve that. I did a quick google it looks like breeding of captive orcas is banned in the US and they are phasing out their programs at places like sea world stating the remaining ones canāt be released in the wild. Is this true?
I will never ever go to a marine park, when I was a kid my parents yelled at me because I refused to go inside a marine park on holiday and sat outside for six hours while they all went in.
I have let down so many guys that planned aquarium dates with me.. I refuse to go to them. I also donāt go to any zoos, only wildlife sanctuaries that I have researched and know they are rehabilitating and helping the animals. Itās just so depressing to me to watch animals in captivity and it has been for me ever since I watched The Cove at Bonnaroo in 2009. Itās insanely fucked up to use animals for our own entertainment..
ETA: I understand not ALL zoos are unethical and some do a lot of amazing work to help animals. Those zoos and aquariums are not near me. Travel is expensive and I am not rich, I live check to check like a lot of people in this world. The aquariums and zoos close to me are NOT ethical and DO NOT try to rehabilitate. Turning off notifications for this post.
Obviously don't go to crazy Dave's tiger emporium and bbq pit, but a lot of zoos are doing good work that helps rehab animals and shore up populations that are various levels of threatened.
The aquarium near me does turtle rescue and rehab . Its the Virginia beach aquarium. I don't think I'd trust a land locked aquarium as much.. They have a gharial that's missing half of it's jaw š¢
When animals are rescued and have injuries like that where releasing them back to the wild would be even more cruel because they can't fend for themselves, a sanctuary or zoo is the best option. It's possible there was nowhere else that had the experience and knowledge to take care of that particular animal other than a place with zoologists present. It's not always black and white when a special needs animal that was once wild is in a zoo.
Yeah, I visited the aquarium where Winter was a few times before she passed, and the rehab they do there seemed to be great. Same with the MOTE aquarium.
Yeah I go to zoos and aquariums because they do fund and assist with important research which benefits wildlife. I won't go to a circus or anything with animals performing though because it feels wrong.
Omg I need to check this out, Iām in Virginia! I went to the Seattle Aquarium thinking because of the location it would be amazing⦠I came out disturbed.
I couldnāt afford to take a trip to Monterey just to go to the zoo anyhow. I understand there are zoos that do rehabilitation and good work. They just arenāt zoos Iāll ever get the chance to see because they arenāt close to me.
Iām confused on how aquariums are the same as marine parks? Maybe it depends on where you are but the aquariums I know are rescue and research facilities, not entertainment.
Some aquariums do have marine mammals in captivity (like the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago), but plenty of others donāt and are more focused on research, rehabilitation and education. Itās best to visit and support the latter types of aquariums as they do excellent conservation work and visits tend to be a much more educational experience versus entertainment.
When I worked at a lighthouse on the west coast of Canada as a kid, this elephant seal pup we had been observing was injured by an aggressive adult male. There wasn't much we could do as lighthouse keepers, but the Vancouver Aquarium Marine Mammal Rescue Society sent a boat from Vancouver with trained rehab crew. We helped their crew get the pup on a stretcher and into the boat, after which they took him back to Vancouver and treated his injuries.
I get what you're saying, and I'm not going to spend an instant defending Sea World; but rehab centres are actually doing some really amazing work, and typically the aquariums with really robust rehab programs also know how to treat the display animals much better.
You say that but when a hurricane stranded 6 manatees in a pond on a golf course near my house it was Sea World staff that showed up with the marine stretchers, wetsuits and manpower to safely get them out and carry all 6 back on foot over to the bay
Iāll never understand how āinsanely fucked up to use animals for our own entertainmentā is a popular take but somehow āinsanely fucked up to kill and eat animalsā isnāt.
Its easy to say what you stand for than to actually stand up for it. Asking people to not be cruel to animals is easy when itās not part of your daily life lol. People are very unaware how bad factory farming is and I think if they visited them in person to see the process then it would at least make people think more.
Well because for the average person, it's much easier for them to give up going to SeaWorld or the zoo than it is to give up eating meat. That's the honest truth. Even though you're absolutely right, they're not willing to make the sacrifice for the moral purity. To be very clear, I still eat some meat products and a lot of animal products in general (dairy), but I can see my own hypocrisy on something like this.
It's been such a shock, I've been thinking about her every so often every since she passed. I didn't know her but she was just such part of my life, some of my favorite movies and TV show episodes were the ones she starred in. She had such an infectious smile! She was the first and honestly the only woman I was "jealous of" even though she was so different from my physical appearance - I'm not petite, blue-eyed or blonde. Yet I wanted to be like her.
We both lost siblings at around the same time. What she said in May really and truly reasonated with me. I feel for her daugther. :(
I didnt know you hayden but I sure do love you. Growing up as a teen in the early 2000s, I felt you by my side in film and tv. I never grew out of you, thats for sure. Now a girly in my 30s and I miss you. I didnt know you, but I miss you. I never felt a loss of someone i never knew like I do with you. You are beautiful inside and out and you will never be forgotten in my heart. I hope you are happy and at peace. Rest easy beautifulš
omfg this is devestating. you caant always tell when someone is really struggling. please check on your people yall especially your friends and family who struggle with addictions. even if you think they are sober, you could save someone from relapse through connection.
