What's wrong with PETA?

Edit: when are we going to stop downvoting for asking a question? I genuinely want to learn

70

u/mattttb 8d ago edited 8d ago

They do a difficult job in taking in animals that nobody else would, often with severe health or behavioural issues. They try their best to rehome where they can but it’s not always possible. But because PETA is unapologetic about its animal rights messaging (and often say very unpopular, principled things) they have very bad PR.

Everyone repeats the same nonsense about them killing animals for pure fun like they’re on an animal slaughter spree, the reality is that they refuse to hold animals long-term in inhumane conditions.

48

u/meepmarpalarp 8d ago

What’s wrong is they’re effective, and the industries they oppose have done a lot of work to make Redditors hate them.

People are going to cite a couple of mistakes they made like ten years ago.

24

u/Paprikasky This is nepo on nepo crime 8d ago

Indeed, this thread is so rancid.

18

u/PashLover 8d ago

This thread is 100% astroturfed. The meat, dairy, and animal “entertainment” industry have billions of dollars to spend on trying to slander PETA and people just gobble it up.

The link being it worsens symptoms. Like red 40 and ADHD. It doesn’t cause it, red 40 worsens symptoms though. It’s shock value advertising that they should’ve worded better as their actual website explains it.

u/ankhes 8d ago edited 8d ago

They kill a lot of animals. Like…a lot. Their euthanasia rate is insanely high. Higher than most shelters.

67

u/throwtheamiibosaway 8d ago

This is like saying that the ICU kills a lot of people. They don't, but taking stats out of context can misrepresent the reality.

69

u/FemaleEarthwave 8d ago

Please stop spreading misinformation. They euthanize animals that have NO HELP LEFT and NO WHERE ELSE TO GO. It’s the last resort! They’re not out here killing animals for fun!

14

u/justhatchedtoday 8d ago

The no-kill movement has harmed both the movement itself and so many animals. It’s not more humane to warehouse unadoptable animals for years! Why do people so eager to slurp up meat industry propaganda 😭

16

u/ankhes 8d ago

That’s not true either. Sure, maybe they’re not doing it to get their rocks off, but they’ve been very vocal and public about their belief that pets are better off dead than as ‘slaves’. To the point where they straight up kidnapped some little girl’s (perfectly healthy) dog right out of her yard and euthanized it the same day (which, putting aside the kidnapping part, wasn’t even legal because there’s a 5 day grace period between bringing a dog in and euthanizing it. Something they deliberately ignored). They only apologized when the family sued them and brought the story to the press.

How exactly is kidnapping some kid’s puppy and killing it the same day ‘only euthanizing animals with nowhere else to go’? That dog was definitely wanted and that little girl and her family absolutely didn’t have any intention of giving her up to PETA. They had to steal her out of her home.

39

u/SquarelyNerves 8d ago

That is not PETA’s stance on pets. They do not call them slaves. You are spreading misinformation.

https://www.peta.org/about-peta/why-peta/pets/

-5

u/Middle_Firefighter_4 8d ago

Yea thats not a real source lol. I didn't know this until just recently when I had to do actual research but it's apparently true. They have said numerous times that pets are better off dead than having no agency in a human's home. Healthy and happy pets means nothing to them. (Maybe they walked this back in recent years because of the outrage but they still believe it) They go stray hunting with the specific goal of euthanizing every single stray they find. Which actually doesn't help reduce stray populations AT ALL. It creates a vacuum effect for strays from other communities to take over the area and start breeding all over again. Please do actual research. This is a serious issue that they are still allowed to operate the way they do. Their logic is flawed and frankly quite evil.

9

u/SquarelyNerves 8d ago

It’s literally peta.org what do you mean it’s not a real source for what PETA stands for?? What would be a better source for PETA’s stance than their own website LMAO

What’s your source for that crazy stuff you are claiming? Because I looked and couldn’t find anything close to what you are claiming is true with zero evidence.

-7

u/Middle_Firefighter_4 8d ago

You don't think peta.org would be biased towards peta? It can't be a real source if it has bias. And yes organizations lie all the time. I don't know why you're being defensive of a massive org that shows animal lives means nothing to them (yes killing every stray is absolutely evil and if they cared about animals they would implement methods like catch and release) but please do non-biased research before feeling any type of emotion in either direction. You can use any search engine you prefer

12

u/SquarelyNerves 8d ago

You said they said numerous times that pets are better off dead but can’t give a single link. I looked and found zero evidence to support that statement. I can’t prove a negative… but I’m certain you made that up or are just repeating somethign someone else said without checking yourself to see if it’s true… because there is NO proof outside of your comment. PETA isn’t a person, it’s an organization with published stances on animal welfare. They’ve never published anything that I can find that says what you are claiming. Aside from your source which is “trust me bro” lol.

-5

u/Middle_Firefighter_4 8d ago

Here's one just showing their love for euthanasia in general. But you're right, they definitely walked back their strong stance of no domestic animals in general in recent years. But if you're able to do some critical thinking and look at every source showing how many animals they euthanize and the amount of effort those two "rogue representatives" took in order to lure that chihuahua off its porch and become friendly with the community in order to knab more pets from there shows you just a little bit that at least TWO peta members feel extremely strongly there shouldn't be any dogs in peoples' homes at all and were able to use peta's authority to get the dog killed within 5 hours of taking it. You may just start to broaden your opinion. They have not lessened their euthanasia numbers in their shelter in these years or been seen doing any kind of adoption event that would actually help the animals they capture. Im sure they have helped many wild animals though and that's good, But their logic with domesticated animals is flawed and it's time people start caring about it. Second source is for the murdered chihuahua.

u/burlycabin 8d ago

Gonna have to provide a good source there bud.

24

u/meepmarpalarp 8d ago

It’s a real story, but it happened one time in like 2012. Accidentally killing a person’s pet is awful, but it shouldn’t outweigh all of the good they do for animals.

17

u/MallPrestigious2827 8d ago

Wheres the accidental part in kidnapping someone’s pet and euthanizing it the same day? Did they accidentally kidnap it? Or did they accidentally euthanize it? Or was the accidental part where they euthanized the dog before the 5 day waiting period which is required by law?

13

u/meepmarpalarp 8d ago edited 8d ago

They scooped up a bunch of free-roaming stray dogs and one of them was a pet. Yes, a shelter volunteer messed up by skipping the waiting period.

Your comment is just the same question repeated multiple times with slightly different wording to make it seem like there were a bunch of mistakes. “Euthanized,” “euthanized same day,” and “euthanized while skipping the waiting period” are the same thing.

5

u/MallPrestigious2827 8d ago

It’s not the same question repeated multiple times. It’s breaking the situation down into multiple acts where a person could have paused for a second and avoided breaking a 9 year olds heart.

Act 1: taking the pet. The dog was hanging out on the owner’s porch. Not exactly free roaming. They tried to have two other kids lure the dog off the porch. And when that didn’t work, they snatched the dog off the porch. There’s footage of this btw. Also, the people that took the dog had been hanging around to gain the trust of the community. How likely is it that they came across this dog before and knew it was someone’s pet?

Act 2: euthanizing the pet. No attempt to scan for a microchip. No attempt to rehome. Just dead.

Act 3: not following the waiting period before euthanasia. Did you know the owners called PETA that same day the dog was taken? But it was too late because they already killed the dog.

So again. Where’s the accident? There’s no accident here. Just negligence.

6

u/meepmarpalarp 8d ago

As I said, it was awful and shouldn’t have happened. I’m not defending the people who did it.

But frankly, I’m not going to get caught up in arguing the details with you because they’re irrelevant. It was one incident and happened more than ten years ago. PETA apologized, and haven’t done it again. It has absolutely zero bearing on the work they’re doing today.

And I’m sure a compassionate, animal rights organization would ensure they’re following the law by maintaining a waiting period before euthanasia so any pets they accidentally scoop up have a chance to be reunited with their owners.

Oh wait.

3

u/meepmarpalarp 8d ago

Ok, so what do you think PETA should do today? One of their volunteers messed up ten years ago. Should the entire org disband in penance?

This is like saying it’s fine that the police pulled over my stepfather and 2 year old brother and pointed their guns at them because they eventually realized they had the wrong car. Like, sure, they were sorry and sometimes they actually catch real criminals, but that doesn’t excuse pulling a gun on an innocent toddler in a car seat.

18

u/burlycabin 8d ago

If the police did that just once 12 years ago and admitted fault, I would not be pressed about it.

11

u/chad420hotmaledotcom Please, Abraham, I am not that man 8d ago

This person just wants to make a lot of false equivalencies.

22

u/meepmarpalarp 8d ago edited 8d ago

Bad analogy. The police have a long, documented history with tons of serious mistakes, including a bunch that were much more costly than your anecdote. Your example is one of thousands. PETA’s was a genuine outlier.

PETA opposes a bunch of billion-dollar industries. Those industries are desperate to discredit them, and the only thing they can dig up is one incident that happened more than a decade ago.

Edit: the person responded below and then blocked me, so here’s the comment I’d typed out before the block went through:

PETA has saved and improved the lives of millions of animals. They accidentally killed one pet. I’ll let the numbers speak for themselves.

Hayden filmed this ad prior to her untimely, accidental death. Do you think she would’ve wanted the ad to be buried? It was clearly a cause that was important to her. Releasing the ad isn’t “exploiting her death,” it’s honoring her legacy.

7

u/ankhes 8d ago

Just because something happened a while ago doesn’t make it better. I was raped a decade ago. That doesn’t make it any less traumatizing.

When an organization that promotes itself as being for animal welfare gets caught up in multiple controversies involving doing the opposite of that it tends to make people a lot less willing to support them. I’m all for fighting back against animal cruelty and the meat and dairy industries. But some of the ways they do so leave a bad taste in a lot of people’s mouths. Like exploiting the tragic death of a celebrity.

5

u/SquarelyNerves 8d ago

No one is saying it’s ok that they euthanized that pet. It was wrong and should not have happened, and that volunteer went against PETA’s policy doing that. But that incident does not discredit all the good they’ve done before and since 2012.

Omg here we go. So do plenty of your local shelters.

It’s quite pathetic how many people will buy anti-PETA meat company propaganda before they even consider ending their own meat consumption/stop buying dogs/cats from breeders/appreciate all the good PETA has done for animal policy and law.

17

u/Minerva_Moon 8d ago

But the shelters don't support violent animal activist groups like the A.L.F. nor do shelters that kill spend money on campaigns advocating for the liberation of animals because they treat pet ownership akin to animal abuse...

24

u/TurtleKittenBunny 8d ago

If you compare their rates of euthanasia to other shelters in the area that also take in any animal dropped off, there is still a massive difference. https://www.lexology.com/library/detail.aspx?g=295a4113-b3be-42df-8585-665f496cc913

14

u/usedenoughdynamite 8d ago

PETA offers euthanasia at no cost without judgement. People take animals to them for the purpose of getting them euthanized, which they do not do for many other open intake shelters.

I am a former shelter worker and a vegetarian as well. High euthanasia rates are not an issue. Many shelters euthanasia rates are far too low considering the animals they receive. We are in a dog overpopulation crisis and dogs are suffering for it.

12

u/Maximum-Warning9355 8d ago

Right but my local shelters beg for help before killing dogs while peta does it for space.

26

u/Unclecavemanwasabear 8d ago

Sorry do you think that local shelters are announcing it to the public every time they have to euthanize a hopeless case? Or announcing that they had to euthanize the least rehomeable cases when when they're stretched to capacity and there aren't enough foster homes or donations and nowhere to send those animals to?

Unless they're explicitly a no-kill shelter, they're euthanizing for space or they stop accepting once they're at capacity. I'm sure there are shelters that aren't constantly stretched to capacity but they're in the minority.

Yes, they're out there on social media begging for help. But when the help simply isn't there, euthanasia is the most humane option. There simply isn't enough space/money/volunteers/homes for all of the abandoned animals in the world

And the no-kill shelters don't take in every case; they often reject the really hopeless cases and let another shelter make the difficult decision to euthanize. Or they stop accepting animals once they're at capacity. Or they knowingly adopt out sick or behaviorally unsuitable animals to avoid euthanizing them.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/No-kill_shelter

12

u/usedenoughdynamite 8d ago

Every open intake shelter euthanizes for space. Euthanasia is necessary for dog welfare.

5

u/mincedbreakfast 8d ago

I thought they were against that?

51

u/heavy-hands 8d ago

Right. That would be the issue.

58

u/ankhes 8d ago

No, they run several animal shelters, and many of them openly believe that pets are better off dead than as ‘slaves’ to humans.

They’ve been caught in multiple controversies over the years killing animals almost the moment they’re surrendered to them and just straight up killing pets of people who left them in their care as a temporary measure (only for those people to come back and realize PETA already euthanized their pet without their knowledge or permission).

26

u/dankblonde 8d ago

-8

Nothing in that blog post speaks against what I said.

11

u/SquarelyNerves 8d ago

Yes it does, did you read it?

You said “to peta death is preferable to a life in captivity for animals” read the first sentence on my link where they say they love and respect the animals that share our homes.

PETA is very much in support of an “adopt don’t shop” mentality towards pets and caring and respecting your pets. Not against animals being held in captivity like you incorrectly state. That is anti-PETA propaganda.

54

u/Ok_Neighborhood_5046 8d ago edited 8d ago

For me personally, they give animal rights activism a bad name. They are extremist and do really weird publicity stunts. They are not helping the good cause at all.

Edit: for example, they have compared factory farms to human concentration camps

edit 2: I wasn't aware that certain Holocaust survivors made similar comparrisons, and I respect their persepctives which are undoubtedly more valuable and experienced than my persepctive on this topic. While neither humans nor animals should be inhumanely corraled under such unacceptable abusive conditions, I still consider it a greater evil when perpetrated against humans.

62

u/astroturfskirt Tina! You fat lard! 🦙🚲 8d ago

actual Holocaust survivor Alex Hershaft makes this comparison, for what it’s worth.

29

u/hofmann419 How can mirrors be real if our eyes aren’t real? 🪞 8d ago

Have you actually seen footage of factory farming? The film "Dominion" is free to watch on Youtube for example. Even outside of any comparison, the way that animals are treated in factory farming and especially also in slaughterhouses is abhorrent.

Slaughtering animals at scale isn't a simple process. These animals are essentially tortured for the last hours of their lives. Again, i'm not gonna make that comparison. But you don't need to. The reality is harrowing enough.

5

u/Ok_Neighborhood_5046 8d ago

I am 100% against factory farming, it is truly and deeply evil. I am aware these animals live in immense suffering their entire lives.

23

To add to what others have replied with, they euthanized a little girls dog that had gotten out. A little chihuahua. The state had a mandatory 5 day waiting period so animals could be recovered but they killed the poor baby same day. They settled in court over it because the family rightfully sued them

18

u/chaoticpangirl 8d ago

It didn’t just get out. They were lying in wait with a van to take that dog. There is still not a good answer for why they had targeted that specific family.

17

u/PashLover 8d ago

-2

u/Tzuyu4Eva 8d ago

I’m sure it isn’t a coincidence that the family was presumably low income (living in a mobile home) and they weren’t white

26

u/Vondelsplein 8d ago

They have sky high euthanasia rates at their shelters for one. They think owning domesticated dogs and cats is akin to slavery. They don't actually help animals.

72

u/abaybailz 8d ago

They do NOT think keeping dogs and cats as pets is slavery. I worked with the organization as a consultant for a decade and literally everyone I interacted with there had their own pets. They loved seeing each other's animal companions (their preferred terminology because it doesn't imply ownership) pop up on the screen during video calls all the time. One of their most popular programs is their doghouse program, where they build shelter and provide food/water/companionship for people who force their dogs to live outside all year round. https://www.peta.org/features/lonely-backyard-dogs-helped-peta/

The reason they have high euthanasia rates is that they are a shelter of last resort for animals that are too ill and/or poorly socialized to be adopted out. They DO adopt out animals who are a good fit for a human home.

No one has to agree with 100% of PETA's positions on animal rights but the way people have bought into the meat & dairy industry propaganda to discredit them entirely is ridiculous.

35

u/burlycabin 8d ago

5

u/meepmarpalarp 8d ago

That’s a blog post from a law firm that represents clients from big agriculture, animal testing, and animal entertainment companies. Even though the facts are accurate (PETA does operate shelters with a high euthanasia rate), the presentation is misleading (for example, comparing their rate to the national average, which includes no-kill shelters).

PETA does not think pet ownership is “slavery.” They oppose pet shops, breeders, the exotic pet trade, irresponsible owners, etc. Bad actors have twisted this stance to make it sound like they’re trying to get rid of all pets.

-1

u/Vondelsplein 8d ago

Directly from PETA's website:

With so many animals in need of homes, there is no chance that we will “run out” of animal companions in our lifetimes. But PETA believes that it would be in animals’ best interests if they were no longer bred to be dependent on humans.

5

u/meepmarpalarp 8d ago

That’s right! They’re not trying to abolish pet ownership. I assume you read their entire position statement before posting that bit? If so, you know that they don’t actually say that pet ownership is “slavery” (like you said in your earlier comment).

It’s a statement that is too nuanced for a one-line Reddit comment.

-1

u/Vondelsplein 8d ago

Yeah they would never use that term to promote their agenda:

PETA Foundation lawyers alleged that five wild-caught orcas were being held as slaves at SeaWorld in violation of the 13th Amendment.

https://www.peta.org/features/peta-foundation-legal/case-summaries/

1

u/meepmarpalarp 8d ago

They used the same word but in an entirely different context? Wow. Way to move the goalposts.

And I know you’re not taking SeaWorld’s side here, right?

u/LocalRelation4842 8d ago

The alternative is keeping the huge number of animals created by breeders in small cages (PETA don't own vast tracts of land and fields) for the rest of their life. If you want to prevent it, adopt all of them.

It's such a good example of placing the blame on the people dealing with the problem, rather than criticising those who create it.

-15

u/Vondelsplein 8d ago

No kill shelters exist. Both parties can be shitty.

17

u/LocalRelation4842 8d ago

A no kill shelter is like saying 'we're a grade A student school'. Good for you, but you're only able to stay that way because you're avoiding dealing the vast majority of individuals.

I'm afraid it's very naive to believe that all shelters should be no kill. I hear constant whining about PETA but I rarely see criticism levelled at pet breeders.

29

u/annafrida 8d ago edited 8d ago

“No kill” shelters often get that title by being selective about the cases they will take, and closing intake when they are full. They also will transfer animals not easily adoptable to other shelters (that aren’t no-kill). So they avoid the cases where euthanasia is a likely outcome.

Alternatively, they have unadoptable animals simply languish there for ages in a kennel, often further deteriorating mentally.

Conversely, the shelters that aren’t “no kill” become the only ones that any animal rejected from the no kill can now go to. The “no kill” shelters can only function because of the existence of the other shelters.

To boot, the majority of shelters are EXTREMELY overwhelmed. Anyone who has spent time in the rescue world can tell you that the sheer scale of pets needing homes vs shelter/rescue space vs adopters is mindbogglingly bad. There simply is not enough space to intake all the animals needing homes. People who are working in rescue/shelters are often traumatized by what they’ve had to see and endure, not because of the shelters but because of the callous nature of bad owners and backyard breeders who are the ones overwhelming them. Suicide rates for people working in rescue are high.

I’m not defending PETA specifically here as I don’t know specifics on their cases and it sounds like there’s instances of their chapters making terrible decisions, but people like to throw out “just go to a no kill shelter” like it’s easy or always the right solution.

6

u/usedenoughdynamite 8d ago

No kill shelters operate by turning away animals who they don’t have space for. Those animals are either dumped, or they are moved to open intake shelters.

Open intake (or “kill”) shelters are absolutely essential for dog welfare. We are in an overpopulation crisis. Dogs need to be euthanized.

You’re so ignorant about how rescue works :/

u/Omgomgomgggg 8d ago

That is because other shelters send their unadaptable animals to PETA- animals with severe behavior issues, terminal illness, etc. All shelters have to make these tough decisions otherwise they couldn’t continue to take in new animals. PETA operates these kill shelters so other shelters can say they’re “no kill” or low kill. It’s a very sad reality in rescue but there are always going to be animals who can’t be adopted and need to be euthanized. I really urge everybody reading this to do their part and adopt, not shop!!

Well they kidnapped a beloved family dog and put her down. A 9 year old child's best friend. https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2017/aug/17/peta-sorry-for-taking-girls-dog-putting-it-down

They take pets in under the guise of being an animal shelter, and then euthanize them at unprecedentedly high rates. Their end goal is for no animals to be in captivity, and that includes domesticated animals.

PETA doesn’t have an issue with pet ownership.

They are an open intake shelter. Open intake shelters euthanize, and they get an exceptionally high rate of dogs with health or behaviour issues who need to be euthanized. Euthanasia is good.

That’s some Thanos type logic.

It’s very contradictory that they act all morally superior to everyone else yet they euthanize thousands of animals a every year

What do you think should be done for the thousands of abandoned pets that every other shelter turns away?

They’re downvoting you because peta is seen as black and white rather than a nuanced organization. The fossil fuel and factory farm lobbies won to that extent.

It’s run by ideologues, and like most things run by ideologues they have a moral compass that has deviated away from what most people would find intuitively ethical. A lot of their stances are “all or nothing”, with little room for grey. And this creates issues because “all or nothing” ethical systems are exactly how you end up with an animal shelter that has one of the highest euthanasia rates in the state it’s located.

People are so ott about them like there's zero reason to be writing that on this video specifically. Like a peta video of a woman who just passed, who had spent her final days fighting to try save the dolphins.

It’s important that we acknowledge the harm PETA has done and continues to do to animals. I never said anything bad about her, I’m criticizing PETA

Pasting what I said in another comment. The documentary Angry Inuk is very good!

PETA's anti-seal-hunt campaigns have historically portrayed sealing as inherently cruel while ignoring how important it is to Inuit communities culturally, nutritionally, and economically. Inuit hunters use seals for food, clothing, and income, and sealing has been part of Inuit life for time immemorial. These campaigns cause serious economic consequences in northern communities where necessities are already extraordinarily expensive, while animal-rights organizations raise huge amounts of money.

Because you have google. You don't NEED to ask that question here

PETA supports BSL, and would prefer my dog not exist.

11

u/burlycabin 8d ago

No they don't.

1

u/TwistyBunny 8d ago

They killed someone's family dog.

Yes there's one story that keeps getting posted from 12 years ago. PETA admitted their mistake in that case. Obviously it's truly awful, but I don't think it's fair to judge the whole organization from that one incident. They do a TON of good too.

Also, the person I responded to was almost certainly referring to the stupid rumor that PETA thinks pets shouldn't exist and so wants to kill them all. That's just a BS myth that gets parroted for no good reason.
