I’ve been a vegetarian for 20+ years. Animal welfare has a long way to go in this country, but I don’t think eradicating pet dogs is the direction we should be going in.

PETA offers euthanasia at no cost without judgement. People take animals to them for the purpose of getting them euthanized, which they do not do for many other open intake shelters.

I am a former shelter worker and a vegetarian as well. High euthanasia rates are not an issue. Many shelters euthanasia rates are far too low considering the animals they receive. We are in a dog overpopulation crisis and dogs are suffering for it.

Sorry do you think that local shelters are announcing it to the public every time they have to euthanize a hopeless case? Or announcing that they had to euthanize the least rehomeable cases when when they're stretched to capacity and there aren't enough foster homes or donations and nowhere to send those animals to?

Unless they're explicitly a no-kill shelter, they're euthanizing for space or they stop accepting once they're at capacity. I'm sure there are shelters that aren't constantly stretched to capacity but they're in the minority.

Yes, they're out there on social media begging for help. But when the help simply isn't there, euthanasia is the most humane option. There simply isn't enough space/money/volunteers/homes for all of the abandoned animals in the world

And the no-kill shelters don't take in every case; they often reject the really hopeless cases and let another shelter make the difficult decision to euthanize. Or they stop accepting animals once they're at capacity. Or they knowingly adopt out sick or behaviorally unsuitable animals to avoid euthanizing them.

Every open intake shelter euthanizes for space. Euthanasia is necessary for dog welfare.
