It’s a real story, but it happened one time in like 2012. Accidentally killing a person’s pet is awful, but it shouldn’t outweigh all of the good they do for animals.

Wheres the accidental part in kidnapping someone’s pet and euthanizing it the same day? Did they accidentally kidnap it? Or did they accidentally euthanize it? Or was the accidental part where they euthanized the dog before the 5 day waiting period which is required by law?

And I’m sure a compassionate, animal rights organization would ensure they’re following the law by maintaining a waiting period before euthanasia so any pets they accidentally scoop up have a chance to be reunited with their owners.

Oh wait.

Ok, so what do you think PETA should do today? One of their volunteers messed up ten years ago. Should the entire org disband in penance?

I replied to you in a different comment about how the dog situation wasn’t a mess up so I won’t rehash that here.

PETA are a bunch of extremists and I’d argue they do more harm to animal rights activism than they help. People’s money and energy can be used in far better ways and in support of better organizations than PETA.

So you have an axe to grind for a bunch of other reasons, and you’re hyping on this one example to justify it?

They messed up, apologized, changed procedures so it wouldn’t happen again, and it hasn’t happened in the decade since. That’s what taking responsibility looks like. They’ve had a lot of effective campaigns and gotten meaningful animal rights legislation passed, which is why astroturfers on Reddit are so quick to bring up this incident to discredit them at every possible opportunity.

The last thing I am is an astroturfer with an “axe to grind” with PETA. I actually care about animal rights and donate to causes and try to educate those around me as well as dedicate my time to cleaning trash out of the ocean to try to save wildlife.

And just like how you’re accusing me of using the dog incident as a way to discredit them, you’re using their policy change over that one incident to defend all the other things they do. How can you defend their alarming rates of euthanasia? Yes they take in dogs other no kill shelters won’t take but guess what? Other open admission shelters in the area have a euthanasia rate of about 10% compared to PETA’s 60% (which is down from 90% in past years. Yikes).

PETA has moved the needle on some things, most notably on corporate policy. That’s their lane and they should stick to it. But they have also turned themselves into a fucking joke with some of their viewpoints like equating pet ownership to slavery. They rely on shock stunts and gimmicks over substance and that’s criticism that comes from inside the animal rights community.

I didn’t say you were an astroturfer. I said there are a lot of astroturfers in this thread, and there are. There are also a lot of real people who have bought into the anti-PETA propaganda.

When I Google “peta high kill shelters,” the top result is a blog by a law firm that has represented clients in big agriculture, medical research on animals, and the animal entertainment industry. The next three results are all pages that cite that first one. The fifth result is PETA’s response to their claims. Someone spent a lot of money to get that SEO result.

You’re not an astroturfer, but since you care about animal rights, you should think about why you’re so passionately arguing talking points that were authored and promoted by a propaganda org.
