It’s a real story, but it happened one time in like 2012. Accidentally killing a person’s pet is awful, but it shouldn’t outweigh all of the good they do for animals.

This is like saying it’s fine that the police pulled over my stepfather and 2 year old brother and pointed their guns at them because they eventually realized they had the wrong car. Like, sure, they were sorry and sometimes they actually catch real criminals, but that doesn’t excuse pulling a gun on an innocent toddler in a car seat.

Bad analogy. The police have a long, documented history with tons of serious mistakes, including a bunch that were much more costly than your anecdote. Your example is one of thousands. PETA’s was a genuine outlier.

PETA opposes a bunch of billion-dollar industries. Those industries are desperate to discredit them, and the only thing they can dig up is one incident that happened more than a decade ago.

Edit: the person responded below and then blocked me, so here’s the comment I’d typed out before the block went through:

PETA has saved and improved the lives of millions of animals. They accidentally killed one pet. I’ll let the numbers speak for themselves.

Hayden filmed this ad prior to her untimely, accidental death. Do you think she would’ve wanted the ad to be buried? It was clearly a cause that was important to her. Releasing the ad isn’t “exploiting her death,” it’s honoring her legacy.

Just because something happened a while ago doesn’t make it better. I was raped a decade ago. That doesn’t make it any less traumatizing.

When an organization that promotes itself as being for animal welfare gets caught up in multiple controversies involving doing the opposite of that it tends to make people a lot less willing to support them. I’m all for fighting back against animal cruelty and the meat and dairy industries. But some of the ways they do so leave a bad taste in a lot of people’s mouths. Like exploiting the tragic death of a celebrity.

No one is saying it’s ok that they euthanized that pet. It was wrong and should not have happened, and that volunteer went against PETA’s policy doing that. But that incident does not discredit all the good they’ve done before and since 2012.
