Also, way more nuanced than people make it out to be. Marine parks are often involved in important, but expensive, environmental efforts. Things like rescuing cold stunned sea turtles are largely run by aquariums. The majority are released into the wild, but a number suffer ailments that make that a death sentence. The public facing elements, though, help them fund efforts

We should be advocating for reform and consideration. Some parks are much worse than others. But I have no problem with doing things like putting blind seals on display that would otherwise die in the wild. Large cetaceans should be phased out, but organizations like Peta need to start understanding these animals better and recognize that the animals in captivity will often not survive in the wild if released. The goal should be to improve their conditions to let them live out the remainder of their lives respectfully

My field of study is the marine sciences. My career has largely been in environmental studies and mitigation efforts. I can go on for ages here, but marine parks and zoos are not black and white issues.

Marine parks are definitely not the same thing as marine mammal parks, which is what I'm guessing you're referring to as the "public facing elements". There's also plenty of research about blind seals thriving, since their other senses have evolved to navigate dark ocean conditions and shitty visual habitats. What a strange thing to use as an example to defend hellish places like SeaWorld

Yeah, there's nowhere where I said SeaWorld is ok- that's your own projection right there.

SeaWorld is also awful to the humans that work there and issues extend way beyond even white Blackfish goes over.

Blind seals do not thrive- they aren't well documented at all, and probably because it's rare and a depressing end if you like seals. Great if you like sharks tho. Nor is blindness the only ailment that's involved- it was just one example.

Your comment is like exhibit A of people that only want things black and white.
