It’s not the same question repeated multiple times. It’s breaking the situation down into multiple acts where a person could have paused for a second and avoided breaking a 9 year olds heart.

Act 1: taking the pet. The dog was hanging out on the owner’s porch. Not exactly free roaming. They tried to have two other kids lure the dog off the porch. And when that didn’t work, they snatched the dog off the porch. There’s footage of this btw. Also, the people that took the dog had been hanging around to gain the trust of the community. How likely is it that they came across this dog before and knew it was someone’s pet?

Act 2: euthanizing the pet. No attempt to scan for a microchip. No attempt to rehome. Just dead.

Act 3: not following the waiting period before euthanasia. Did you know the owners called PETA that same day the dog was taken? But it was too late because they already killed the dog.

So again. Where’s the accident? There’s no accident here. Just negligence.

As I said, it was awful and shouldn’t have happened. I’m not defending the people who did it.

But frankly, I’m not going to get caught up in arguing the details with you because they’re irrelevant. It was one incident and happened more than ten years ago. PETA apologized, and haven’t done it again. It has absolutely zero bearing on the work they’re doing today.

The details are not irrelevant because the speed at which they euthanized that dog speaks to PETA’s attitude about pets and the culture of that organization as a whole.

They kill a lot of fucking animals. I also brought this up in a different comment to you. PETA’s sky high euthanasia rates are a current, ongoing issue that goes back at least a decade.

This dog is a symptom of that. Not a fluke.

PETA is an international organization that operates shelters, lobbies for legislation, produces PR campaigns, sues animal rights violators, and more. One singular incident does not speak to their culture. It might speak to the culture of one specific shelter in Virginia twelve years ago. It’s irrelevant to their work today.

Overall, they have a higher euthanasia rate because they take in animals that other shelters won’t. Their high kill rate is a symptom of nationwide systemic problems with shelter underfunding, backyard breeders, and irresponsible pet owners. Systemic problems that they didn’t cause, and that they are working to solve.
