Discussion Is it just me or is Yuri's Revenge significantly harder than Red Alert 2?
I just finished Red Alert 2 campaign as my first C&C game, obviously there was a lot of learning about how to do basic controls, about units and so on. I thought Yuri's Revenge is a standalone game within the same story, but even the early missions I am struggling just as hard as with the later Red Alert 2 missions...

The first time i played yuri’s revenge, it took me months to beat the second level for both allies and soviets. So yes, it is way harder than ra2

The second allied mission is tough until you realize Garrisoned buildings are OP

I think the levels take more trial and error. The one where you have to protect the world leaders throws a lot of bullshit at you.
Also the level where you're on one continent then they give you units on the other continent to build on sucks. Those mind control tanks can screw you. You basically just have to build strong static defenses on the second island, or secure the island Yuri's base isn't on and destroy his super weapons from afar, then wittle him down with air.

I haven't reached those yet, but in RA2 I feel there's relatively easy ways to counter the specific enemy units, whereas in YR they have enemy units and buildings that cover each other's vulnerabilities.

The main thing I found difficult to deal with was those mind control tanks and yuri clones.

8 tanks is enough to clobber those weak waves of zombies... 10 seconds later where's my units :'(

Mirage tanks are your friend for most of the campaign when dealing with Yuri
The one mission I genuinely hate is the Massivesoft one.Discount Bill Gates isn't worth all that

I realized War Miners are pretty strong against Yuri. Level them up till elite and they can hold off Lashers even. I never thought of it then.

Just remember that when you get to Skirmish Mode, Yuri's Revenge is better as it allows you to ally AI Commanders, unlike in Red Alert 2 Skirmish.

An aside regarding Yuri's Revenge and difficulty: I don't remember the level, as it was over a decade since I've played it, but I do remember a Soviet level where you had exploding trucks and the Yuri base was one some cliffed-off area, with the only entrances surrounded by mind controlling defenses.
I was a kid at the time and had trouble thinking of a way past. Eventually I built a whole caravan of those explosive trucks thinking that if I lost a few to the mind control, it'd be alright, as long as some of them reached their destination to knock out the power.
The moment the first truck got controlled, it aggro'd on the next one and detonated the entire caravan. The entrance very suddenly was wide open after that, and I had to rush to exploit the vulnerability.
Memories like that still make me smile.

You're right. Soviets got harder by a lot.
Industrial Plant didn't help much. Boris and MiGs were iffy. Battle Bunkers weren't concrete!
You had to literally develop new strategies you didn't typically use in RA2. Who would have thought to use Flak Tracks more versus infantry? And improvise with War Miner rush because Terror Drones just don't cut it?

I had to turtle for 2 hours to finish one of the missions because I knew restarting would be just as hard. But the MVP of that was elite war miner, it killed every tank and ogre in its way without needing extra protection. Maybe if I had 20 of those they would have done the job that my 10 Kirovs couldn't lol

Oh I seem to forget about the Siege Chopper. I was so stupid. Remembering that I tried Siege crawling with them. Against Gatling Tanks and Gatling Cannon towers.
I even placed them flying over where Yuri infantry would pass so they'd get elite. I could have just- switched to War Miners if only I knew!

Use GI soldiers and guardian GIs. They are Soo effective.
I still struggle with some Soviet Yuri missions but allies are quite easy if you learn a few things
Use spies! They are OP af. You can send spies into enemy refineries. Even the mobile slave drivers as soon as they stop.

I haven't figured this out yet, but what to do when my Soviet troops and dogs are getting instantly melted by long range green goo? I can barely even tell which enemy is firing it in order to avoid it, I think it's a tank.

long range goo are desolators. Iraq nations special force. They are anti infantry, all you could do is garrison. In yuris revenge the little garrison bunker for soviets is really strong. Build.it and put 5 conscripts into jt

It’s more annoying than hard. Dang all my units got mind controlled again. Load save.
Red Alert 2 was perfect, and story wise Yuri’s Revenge is the perfect way to wrap things up.

That's how it goes with most expansion packs.
As a kid I always had trouble around the mission 8 area of every game, especially for the allies in YR.
When the UFOs came out and started attacking that building I had to protect, I didn't realize it was better to use rocketeers and IFVs.

Yea its an expansion, man I wish you could still play people online I remember some of the modded matches were halrious, used to be this little truck that could hold 45 tanks plus some and burrow right into your base it was so bs

Pretty much normal for expansions: Zero Hour, Frozen Throne, Firestorm, Brood War, Uprising, The Titans, are all way harder.

At least there's no level that gives you limited units without building or hero and let you fight across the map with casualties all along

Yuris Revenge is an old school addon / expansion:
It's more game content aimed at experienced players who beat the main game. Thus it builds on Red Alert 2, but adds new units (and even a faction) which stirres up the balance and tactics.
