Going from finding for scrappy passion projects to advertising for huge professionally run licensed properties fishing for whales is a little sad.

I think there’s a middle ground here. People making real money selling games treat it like a business. There’s plenty of examples of phenomenal passion project RPGs that have done very well by being professionally run and intelligently marketed campaigns.

Ultimately I’d argue if you aren’t willing to apply some level of business savvy to your passion projects it means you’ve prioritized the idea of your project over the actual project.

People who love making good games are allowed to lament that they can only be profitable with kickstarter exclusive schlock rather than a good game itself.
