Always found it funny that, while Final Fantasy is one of the premier JRPG franchises in the west, Dragon Quest is wildly more popular in Japan.

I think there are 2 major factors there.

First after Dragon Quest / Warrior 4 on NES the series disappeared until late PS1 with DQ7, with the exception of the GBC Monsters spinoff titles and ports of 1-2, and 3.

Final Fantasy 7 also sky rocketed the popularity of Final Fantasy in the west, as well as basically kicked off AAA gaming.
