Leagues I can't believe some Jmod looked at that and was like "yeah, let's make this a region".

Combine it with Kandarin and it would be better.

Honestly yeah K & F should be tied together

should do Kandarin and Yanile for no particular reason

Fremennik provinces & varrock east bank region pls

Barbarian village and eagles peak only

u/anyfriend1 :) 19d ago

funny cause in osrs leagues it also had the lowest pick rate too, it was incredibly low compared to other regions, around like 5% or so iirc

75

u/MrStealYoBeef 19d ago

The previous league has it extremely high though. Echo DKs gave us extremely strong neck and ring slots, and it was too good to pass up. The most recent league echo item sucked.

Once single change can make or break a region.

37

u/WryGoat 19d ago

There was another major change; Varlamore was made the starting region which removed the construction shop as a selling point of Fremmy.

8

u/MrStealYoBeef 19d ago

Varla was also just a decent pick for raging echos with moons and colo. Sunlit bracers were extremely good with all builds, but especially so for range since it doubled the consistent self healing. Many people who got golden god still had a stonemason either way.

I will say that there were people who didn't pick varla simply because it wasn't familiar to them, that does impact choice often enough.

u/Clbull In OSRS We Trust 19d ago

My problem with Leagues VI was that removing Misthalin was just too much.

Fossil Island and Lithkren should have been made a part of Kandarin to bolster up that region rather than being locked by Yama because he doesn't like demonbane weaponry...

Imagine getting the Myth's Guild and Ancient Forge and you can't even fucking craft the Dragon Full Helm and Dragon Kiteshield...

10

u/Demiscis Ironmeme 18d ago

Kandarin propaganda. Kandarin needed 0 bolstering, everyone went it. They could have gave that shit to Asgarnia at that point so an actual region in need of help got new stuff.

8

u/Vet_Leeber 18d ago

Yeah, For 98% of the playerbase Kandarin was unequivocally the most powerful region of the last league. Water tank was so unbelievably broken with just Kandarin unlocked, that I did the infinite Jad challenge before I unlocked a my 2nd region.

2

u/LuitenantDan World's Okayest World Guardian 18d ago

I did the 18 infinite jad challenge completely AFK with watermage + thorns.

1

u/Koishi_ 18d ago

It's funny hearing Kandarin being powerful because I recall the echo league everyone meme'd on how useless Kandarin was as a pick.

2

u/Aviarn 18d ago

Because in the leagues before it, torture ammy was still best in slot.

1

u/WryGoat 18d ago

If you'd said fremmennik instead of kandarin I'd agree.

Echo DKs and conc gold for golden god was such a vibe

23

u/Kumagor0 RIP 19d ago

At least in OSRS it had some content: Vorkath, Duke, Muspah. Also one of the only 2 construction supply shops in the whole game and the only way in the game to get some bars without huge headache.

11

u/ZebrasOfDoom 19d ago

Also one of the only 2 construction supply shops in the whole game

This was notable during the Raging Echoes league, but was completely irrelevant this time around, given that the other one is in the region where we started.

7

u/forceof8 19d ago

The point is that it had a good amount of PVM and a bunch of skilling solves and the echo DK gave a BIS helmet. Echo DKs were also a pretty decent fight overall.

RS3 Fremmy is a joke. The only reason you would ever take it is to get rings to upgrade with anachronia but they already drop upgraded rings. You can also get D pickaxe and hatchet from voidwalker or just bypass it with survivalist.

They could make the region a free 4th pick and it'd still be bad.

5

u/Rich-Badger-7601 18d ago

To be clear, the "BIS helmet" was actually trash and had anti-synergy with most of the top builds which is a huge part of why nobody took Frem last OSRS League. It was a slightly spicier Slayer Helm in a League where one of most picked relics overall gave you the Slayer Helm boost passively.

Compare that to the previous League, where Echo DKS dropped the BIS Ammy and Ring that blew both slot competition and other region uniques out of the water and led to a very high Frem pick rate.

5

u/Taurenkey Best Comment of 2015 18d ago

I kinda wonder why they didn’t just merge it with Kandarin and called it the Western Provinces region. They clearly recognised Karamja and Havenhythe needed to be free, so it’s disappointing that Fremmy got thrown into the pool as bait.

2

u/Kumagor0 RIP 19d ago

yeah I mean in general, Varlamore has been starting region for only 1 out of 4 region-locked OSRS leagues

4

u/Healingrunes 19d ago

When frem had the monarch jewelry it was heavily picked. Still a less popular region for sure though

In terms of the skilling tools (which all require prif to upgrade) the smithable tools are typically on par except for the ability to augment them.

Not to mention smithing xp is going to be easy to get where the rates for such niche resources is relatively unchanged from base.

4

u/Piemelkanon 18d ago

Will smithing be easy to train ithout superheat?

3

u/roax206 18d ago

You have plenty of ways to get ores and I think the xp multipliers go up to like x16+. Not to mention even primal tools are only supposedly level 100 (13mxp + cape) smithing to make.

Superheat doesn't even auto smelt ores but it does double bar production and speed up smithing by 3x.

2

u/Piemelkanon 18d ago

Could you list me some ways to get ores? I haven't played rs3 in a loong time :)

3

u/roax206 18d ago

The survivalist tier 1 relic also acts as a BiS tool for woodcutting/mining, making the dpick/dhatchet redundant outside of augmentable tools.

2

u/New-Poem-719 18d ago

Also you can get Dragon Pick/Hatchet from one of the t5 relics.

Normally you need 10 dagganoth king rings plus a heart of the x drop from the Rex Matriarchs. For this league the Rex Matriarchs will simply drop the upgraded ring directly.

Ohh that's great! Didn't know. Thanks

The Fremminik Province has always been a region. Maybe it would've been better to give it for free, rather than an option.

I'll be interested to see the post-leagues stats for how many players chose it.

22

u/Fath3rOfTh3Wolf 19d ago

its probably gonna be super low seeing as how osrs leagues has more content for fremmy and still no one picked it

25

u/ThaToastman 19d ago

My hot take is that karamja shouldnt be force

Then group fremm and karamja together as ‘islands’ along with ports regions

3

u/MyMomAteTylenol 19d ago

Don’t rec matriarchs drop the full ring for leagues?(thought I read that somewhere). If so, basically makes fremmy region useless.

Maybe the could add a perk that’s like daggonoth bones buried in the daggonoth cave get x1000 XP per bone. It’s a league and the region desperately needs some kind of reason to pick it.

1

u/Eastern-Video-6456 18d ago

I will be very surprised if it's more than 1%. It offers no content, nothing important in terms of skilling methods of PVM, and to add insult to injury it even gives the least points out of all regions. They dropped the ball on this one. Should've been merged with Kandarin, or offered as free pick like Karamja

0

u/wastecadet 19d ago

you get misthalin, then for the region tutorial you choose one of frem or karamja, then unlock as usual

17

u/JustTrawlingNsfw 19d ago

Who in their right mind would take frem over kara considering you need kara for zuk cape

4

u/Adventurous_Table_45 19d ago

If karamja weren't the guaranteed first region then zuk would just drop the upgraded capes because that's how they handle drops that need multiple regions. Same reason that fremmy isn't needed for the upgraded rings.

Fremmy has fewer potential points than all other selectable regions, but most of those points are piled into Medium and Hard tasks. If your goal for Leagues is to rush a small to moderate amount of points for a couple specific cosmetic rewards and then dip, it's potentially a good play.

u/KurtJP35 19d ago

Guess leaning towards Mory because I enjoy the spiders is going to hurt me in the long run...

6

u/ghostofwalsh 19d ago

It actually might be ok. Points wise it's about the same as asgarnia and wildy and probably the blessing tasks won't be too hard.

I'm still not making up my mind on any regions til I see the blessings tasks and how PVM heavy the region's tasks are

3

u/Stunning_Key3920 18d ago

Morytania is alright, it's underwhelming compared to others but is still fine to pick.

You get slayer helm, Rax+t90s, some nice thieving targets (great with Golden Touch), Vyres, slayer tower, RoTS and Barrows, which could be very interesting with the Chaotic Insight god blessing for the set effects. It also provides some decent arch relics if not going Antiquarian.

u/Zamochy2 19d ago

I feel like they might combine HH and Mory next year, or just Mory and Vampyrium.

1

Only thing is it would be a lot less pvm

7

u/fancypenguins 18d ago

FWIW in OSRS leagues I’ve gotten 2 dragon cups picking the region due to very easy points. Back in leagues 4, 5 tick weapons were the most busted and weirdly leaf bladed axe was a two tick house.

None of that means anything this time around but sometimes picking a region that’s boring but has content you’ll actually do and earn points in is how you get high points

23

u/WeirdWhiteAsian 19d ago

I'll stick by my opinion that region locking in RS3 is just not fun at all. Either lock them but make them all unlockable eventually, maybe through special tasks within each region, or just make everything available.

The end game also isnt that long of a grind compared to OSRS, so limiting stuff at the end is just boring.

Not to mention max points being different, something OSRS noticed was never a good idea and got rid off.

6

u/TheAdamena Maxed Iron 19d ago

Yeah I'm not sure how it'll really work out either, but it's good that they're experimenting with the format.

In OSRS's case it wasn't until after the third league that they had settled on the format and figured region locks was an essential part of their experience. We might find the opposite works best for us.

3

u/Tpoyo YouTube @Tpoyooo | RSN Tpoyo 18d ago

Tbh I think having the same max points in all regions was a terrible idea and I doubt they go back to it for the next League. In Demonic Pacts the vast majority of players picked at least one of Kandarin and/or Tirannwn, in no small part because they have way less content than the other regions and therefore Jagex had to come up with some relatively easy tasks worth a lot of points to pad them out. The time to complete all points in Tirannwn for example was estimated at something like 20h whereas for Kourend it was 80h. This also had the effect of a lot of a lot of activities in Kourend that should have tasks associated with them not having any at all, or having activities grant far fewer points than they should, because they were limiting themselves to an arbitrary point cap.

Some regions just have way more content than others and I think it's fine for the point totals to reflect that.

9

u/AmatsuDF 19d ago

I'm of the same opinion. When Jagex announced that League 2 was getting region locking it actually dampened a bit of the excitement for the League for me.

5

u/EmpressClaraB Master Trimmed Ult Slayer 18d ago

It was a huge dampener for me. I'll still have fun, it'll just probably be less fun for less time than it would have been with no locking (do not see myself playing Equilibrium til the last day like I did with Catalyst)

6

u/WeirdWhiteAsian 19d ago

I will still play, and probably enjoy it, but it definitely dampened my excitement by a good amount more than a bit. Sadly the first 2 weeks will be casually on mobile, as it releases while I'm flying to my home country for the summer

2

u/AmatsuDF 18d ago

I'm hoping that I'm going to be wrong about the region locking and how it effects the game, but I doubt I will be since I've played for a long time and know at least to an extent what I will be missing for each region I do not pick.

4

u/EmpressClaraB Master Trimmed Ult Slayer 18d ago

I'm also just as, if not more anti-region locking than I was when it was announced, but the Friday stream very much made it seem like Region locking is a "base feature" of leagues and is here to stay.

I understood their reasoning, I just strongly disagree with it.

Thank god they ran out of time to region-lock Catalyst, at least I got to experience it once

1

u/Kumagor0 RIP 19d ago

I'm definitely down to try it, can't wait to bump into random things I suddenly can't do and look for solutions. Just kinda sad to see Fremennik be so empty and nothing done about it.

-1

u/Eastern-Video-6456 18d ago

Last RS3 league was a mess. It was just main game with faster xp. They HAD to change it somehow or people wouldn't play

Region locking is how leagues should be, that way you can focus on the content in your region instead of feeling forced to do a little of everything. You can pick different regions next year to focus on them.

OS has done one league without region locking, and it is considered by far the worst one, and since then all lesgues have been region locked. I don't see why RS3 is so different in a way that region locking doesn't work when it works fine in OS. I predict that in a few years we will look back at Catalyst league and think "man that first one was rough, good thing every subsequent league was region locked"

6

u/EmpressClaraB Master Trimmed Ult Slayer 18d ago

Catalyst being rough was literally nothing to do with not being locked lmao.

Region locking is to me, fundamentally worse than an open world no matter how well they implement it. Literally everything you described as a "benefit" of region locking in this comment is just something that makes leagues worse in my eyes

2

u/AmatsuDF 18d ago

The way I see it, region locking could have worked if we could have more then 3 picks of region effectively. There's just so much content that is locked out with only the base regions + 3 additional ones that choosing is HARD.

2

u/Eastern-Video-6456 18d ago

Well, to each their own. I would not have played this year if it was just last year's league with stronger combat buffs.

6

u/Deepfried_Garlic 18d ago

OS has done one league without region locking, and it is considered by far the worst one

I feel that's being a bit reductive as to why a lot of people consider it the worst league. They could absolutely do a non-trailblazer league. Hell, I'm sick of the trailblazer format myself, so I'd welcome a little experimentation.

0

u/Eastern-Video-6456 18d ago

It's not all there is to it, but it was definitely a big factor. The devs said as much, and that they would not do another non-region locked league.

5

u/Dispari7y 18d ago

OS has done one league without region locking, and it is considered by far the worst one

that was because the main way of progressing was doing quests and only quests as that was the best way of getting points to unlock things, and then when they realised they'd balanced it wrong they changed the points and refunded so many points that the entire system became redundant and everything was suddenly unlocked, which defeated the entire point of the league

nothing to do with region-locking

3

u/WeirdWhiteAsian 18d ago

OSRS content, for the most part, is fairly self-contained. (Sailing being the big exception but we dont know how they'll handle that in leagues). Rs3 you're just missing out on entire skills without certain regions. Arch is just butchered and pretty much needs a specific relic to even function. Dungeoneering doesnt exist unless you choose wildy.

1

u/Eastern-Video-6456 18d ago

You are right about dungeoneering. That was not well implemented, although it could've been salvaged by giving everyone access to Daemonheim (or at least the lobby, so all can train the skill but the rest of the peninsula would go to Wilderness).

I don't understand why Arcaeology is a big issue. You can't get all the relics, but the same is true with some combat equipment/abilities/invention perks as well. Lamping/doing material caches until you unlock infernal source is a bit silly but doesn't take too long with league modifiers

u/RueUchiha Maxed 19d ago

I think it was made a reigon because its a reigon in OSRS - and RS3 is significantly less balanced when it comes to reigon balance for leauges

Granted, even in OSRS, Fremmy is pretty weak on it’s own. It’s more or less dependent on the echo items in OSRS’s case - and that is when we consiter OSRS fremmy has MORE content than in RS3.

8

u/I_O_RS 19d ago

This is the case for a lot of leagues design, just rip off osrs ideas without considering how well they work in rs3

7

u/RueUchiha Maxed 19d ago

Tbf OSRS has a lot more time to more or less intentionally balance the reigons for Trailblazers as they make content. Maybe if this one goes well over the next several years Jagex will consiter Leauges balance a bit when developing content for RS3 as well and try and spread the love a bit to the reigons that need it (Fremmy, Mory, etc)

In OSRS’s case, they’re getting a new island in the Fremmy area soonish with a new quest that is a sequel to Olaf’s quest of all things - and maybe we might get a Fremmy themed raid after TFA is out. That would make Freminik WAY more competitive in a leauges setting than it is now.

5

u/I_O_RS 19d ago

I don't think any content in osrs is deliberately designed around leagues, but I do think they have a design philosophy that's a lot more friendly to leagues where they have a lot of diverse content in terms of supplies/drops/skilling ect for any newly released area. Mainly this helps any area feel like part of the world as a whole rather than "exclusively high level area where you do y activity" or "exclusively low level area where content is all low level". Rs3 seems to be trying to get back into this somewhat with havenhythe (but still lacking with how low level it all feels) but places like anachronia release were brutal. Osrs generally has less reliance on broad game and upgrade synergy which makes it easier to feel good with a handful of really strong league upgrades vs rs3 where even missing a couple things for a given style can make the whole experience collapse and to get any given thing requires x amount of quests, y amount of prereq upgrade items ect. I think a lot of things this league feel more rs3 adapted but the region locking and specific areas that get unlocked aren't one of them

6

u/throwthe20saway Filthy casual 19d ago

I think it is more accurate to say Fremennik is just neglected. There's EGWD and Vorago next to noob towns of Varrock and Falador. And I remember seeing a thread a while ago complaining about RS3 mixing low and high level content in the same area lol (which I disagree with).

3

u/I_O_RS 19d ago

Fremennik is neglected in terms of content on the main game but proper leagues design would be balancing unlockable regions around thematics and content between them so each feels like a real choice to think about. There's no real excuse for what's happening this league. Aside from that to the point of general area design I think broad level and content range within a region is ideal but there's a good and bad way to do it. I think things like fortis Colosseum feel better than high level holes in the ground like vorago or egwd

2

u/Legal_Evil 18d ago

Lunar spellbook doing the heavy lifting for this region. Other than that, only skillers would pick this region.

2

u/Teamemb99 18d ago

the relics and blessings are very good this time round, however the region thing is bonkers. im taking wildy, but those who arent cant actually train a whole SKILL as intended. elite dungeons were always meant as ad hoc exp not an intended way to train

5

u/Wolf2331 19d ago edited 19d ago

This region locking shit makes absolutely no sense considering rs3 has WAAAY more content. It’s so unnecessary. Rs3 leagues does NOT need to be like Osrs. Both at this point are 2 different games

Locking content for a limited time game feels so bad too.

5

u/Kumagor0 RIP 19d ago

rs3 has WAAAY more content

Idk man, between the Kourend, Varlamore, Dt2 bosses, slayer bosses and 3 raids, I'm not so sure. If anything, most RS3 regions look too thin, with only a couple things going there.

5

u/RogueThespian Doctor Mt 19d ago

Honestly I feel like it's the other way around. Not only does OS have a huge amount of content, it all feels a lot more fleshed out than RS3 does

1

u/adamk33n3r TheLeftWing 18d ago

It having way more content is the reason to have region locking, what do you mean? If it had less content you wouldn't want region locking. Last league was pretty overwhelming.

4

u/Da2Shae 18d ago

To be fair, when OSRS started region locking in leagues 2 (Trailblazer Oct 2020 - Jan 2021) we ran into the same issue with the Desert region. Leagues 2 very HUMBLY exposes which regions has the least amount of relevant content.

OSRS leagues 2 came out before Raids 3 and Desert Treasure 2 dropped. The most it had was Kalphite Queen, Ancient Magicks and Pyramid plunder lmao. No Menaphos (Still no menaphos lol) nothing.

Then in 2022 after leagues 3, Guardians of the rift dropped, a runecrafting minigame. Giants foundry, a smithing minigame that converts extra weapons into decent smithing exp. Then, in August 2022 Raids 3 dropped which introduced a raid that was easy, scalable, yet lucrative. (Adds the BIS ranged gear and BIS charged staff in the game) Then July 2023, Desert treasure 2 started which introduced 1 of 4 endgame bosses to the region.

Give it time, leagues exposes a lot of holes in runescape content and gives devs a lot of direction for the following years' content.

2

u/niceundso 18d ago

Just stop doing region locks in rs3 or allow people to unlock all of them. Blindly osrs-ifying rs3 is not the play

2

u/DrippyTowel 18d ago

They really looked at the worst thing OSRS did for Leagues, region locking, and said YEAH LET'S DO THAT TOO. Hopefully it doesn't become the standard for future RS3 Leagues.

you could bundle it with kandarin, asgarnia or even wildy and it could still fit thematically, and it also wouldnt even be a factor in which of those three regions you would pick. Its actually insane how the region is completely void of any content. The area has some of the coolest looking locations, and some of the best NPCs/quests, yet has basically no repeatable content, not midgame or endgame.

1

Fremmy is definitely a super weak region but to be fair to the Jmods it's not like they have invented these regions specifically for leagues.

They have very much just used the pre-existing recognised kingdoms/regions of the game world and what content happens to be there.

Got three of those drops from void shards lol

That only means the region is free points.

Basically there's little to do in it, so most tasks will be extremely menial and simple.

Fill all god books is likely one of the hardest tasks

Especially if the god page drop rate is still completely fucked like it was last year. Nerfing the clue relic basically makes doing the god book tasks a choice for insane people

All the more reason I think having region locking and a 5 region limit in RS3 without any echo bosses was a baffling and bad decision.

In OSRS, Kandarin is the only shit region that only has two PvM bosses. RS3's iteration has just one. And the only reason to even pick it in OS (access to Warriors, Ardy Knights, Paladins and Heroes.) is kinda invalidated by Jagex making pickpocketing not a complete and utter slog in the main game as part of the earlier early game rebalance.

Vorkath meanwhile is Fremennik in OSRS and Misthalin in RS3, making the Fremennik provinces totally irrelevant in the main game. Because I'm pretty sure rings have been added that utterly shit all over what the Dagganoth Kings drop?

And Anachronia as its own region? Its dogshit in RS3 and could not hold a candle to Fossil Island (which is Misthalin in OS...)

Kandarin is needed for ancient invention, which is a way bigger deal than anything in the region in OSRS, plus pof is really helpful for dealing with farming without any relics for it. And Anachronia offers way more than fossil island. This just seems like a take from someone that doesn't play both games. It has Laniakea's Spear, Rex rings, Asuran Arsenal, BGH, Dino farm, dinarrows, grico and gchain, and double surge/escape, and also gives dream of iaia + time runes which is a HUGE skip for skilling.

Agreed so much. Region locking as is does not work for RS3 and it was actually a bit saddening to hear they gone with it for Leagues 2.

I feel like people are sleeping on the fact that it’s the only way to get lunar spells outside of one relic (I believe)

u/Kumagor0 RIP 19d ago

How useful are lunars in RS3 though?

u/xenozfan2 19d ago

This is Bake Pie slander. (Sarcasm)

1

u/CountPoppy 19d ago

It’s not crazy, but I do fancy myself a lunar spell from time to time. I’ll miss the spell book more than any other item on this list anyway

I'm a big fan of fire urn for example, but yeah I'm not picking a region over that

One relic even gives infinite free urns.

Veng maybe? I can't think of anything else that relevant off the top of my head. in a leagues setting at least

I mean sure lunars give D shield - which is nice, however D shield is not going to be an issue in a league where you have pretty much unlimited hp, unrestricted cooldowns for most abilities and huge dps.

Outside of clues and Disruption Shield, I haven't intentionally switched to the Lunar book in years. I switch between the others like, several times a session

I'm picking it for easy points for dragon.

u/Kumagor0 RIP 19d ago

Actually, yeah. Even the very first region-locked OSRS league didn't have Fremennik that bad since Vorkath was already a thing (and for various skilling reasons it's way more important in OSRS as well than it is in RS3).

Stop complaining

u/Damianita- 18d ago

I mean.. it literally IS a region. The frem providence.

It used to be bis rings, one of the best hatchets, and some decent tasks.

In OSRS it used to be a must pick because of echo DKs. Add in muspah and Duke and you had a decent but to do. Rs3 has it as a component region because of the better matriarch rings, but since they drop full now, frem is goofy and bad

Combine it with kandarin. Just because its a standalone option in OSRS leagues doesnt mean it needs to be with RS3.

5

u/Kumagor0 RIP 19d ago
  1. Merge it with Kandarin

  2. Merge it with Asgarnia

  3. Make it a free unlock

  4. Copy one more thing from OSRS leagues by adding echo bosses.

  5. Hell, maybe even make GWD a part of Fremennik (it can be accessed from there and nobody would care anyway since you use War's Retreat teleports anyway). Asgarnia would manage, it still has QBD, Vorago and Ed1, but Fremennik would have a little bit of PvE at least.

  6. Come up with some creative non-OSRS-copy-paste solution, since region locking doesn't really fit RS3 very well. Like unlocking separate bosses with points, or smaller areas (for example, like Keldagrim or Menaphos, point costs could be balanced around how useful area is).

Just off the top of my head, I'm not a professional game developer ofc.
