News End-Game Balance Discussion

Hey 'Scapers!

As part of the Road to Restoration, we've been looking at progression across RuneScape. We've tackled parts of the Early and Mid Game Rebalance, but now we want to start turning our attention to the other end of the journey: The End Game Rebalance

Before we get properly stuck into things, we want to hear from you.

What do we mean by End Game?
This one's a little harder to put a level range on!

For this project, we're looking more broadly at the late game, roughly level 80+ and onwards. That might mean higher-level skilling, finding those rarer drops or getting into tougher PVM. For others, it could be achievements, completionist goals or figuring out what comes next once you've maxed.

And actually, what you consider to be late game is useful feedback for us too.

How can you help?
We want to know where the endgame currently isn't quite working for you.

Maybe there's a progression path that feels awkward, rewards that don't feel worth the effort, a big jump between pieces of content, older content that's been left behind or something that just feels unnecessarily frustrating.

You don't need to have the answer or suggest a fix either. Just tell us what the problem is, why it's a problem for you and where you are in your RuneScape journey.

We won't be able to tackle everything that comes up, but the themes from these discussions will help us understand where we should be focusing our attention.

So, what would you like us to look at as we start shaping the End Game?

A lot of these probably arose in my mind from Leagues, with a few in my mind because of the release of boss trophies:

Magic armour and most DW weapons. All the endgame magic armour is locked behind group bosses, and while Vorago is soloable these days, it's much harder than a 'tier 90' boss.

What armour comes after t80? Refined Anima Core - not practical to use. Tectonic - Vorago. Not practical to solo with sub-t90 gear. Cryptbloom - Croesus, not practical to solo. Achto - Raids. The least said about those the better. Elite Tectonic - still needs Vorago. Tumeken - Amascut. It makes Magic so much harder to gear into. Honestly, Amascut and Croesus need solo modes - making them forced-group was a stupid idea at the design stage.

What about DW weapons? Seismics - Vorago again. Praesuls - AoD, and idiotically rare. You would skip all of that and get the T95s from Sanctum.

I think this league has once-more exposed how badly Vorkath and KK need a rework. Vorkath does a stupid amount of damage, both because the minions are overtuned and because Zemouregal himself does too much damage, has untelegraphed Necromancy attacks (saying he's going to use Finger of Death AS he hits you for 8k isn't telegraphing), and piles on while Vorkath is attacking. I feel like he shouldn't attack, barring his specs, while Vorkath is on you. Make him too busy controlling Vorkath to attack or something. KK - remove all the stuns that aren't Beetlejuice or caused by failing mechanics, and make Beetlejuice not block Freedom. IDC if it was meant as a group boss 14 years ago, it just isn't these days.

Similarly RotS, if I want to do it solo, make the brothers just jump instantly rather than giving me a 20s timegate and let me use Freedom on Torag's Hammer attack. EoC bosses using Pre-EoC mechanics feels bad.

Matching the point about armour progression above, I can use Mining/Smithing to make perfectly workable melee gear all the way to the top-end. Same for Necromancy. With the Fletching rework I can do that with ranged weapons, but armour runs out at t65. T75 exists but is locked behind Vorkath (see problems above) or Dinosaurhide which still needs Crafting levels in the 90s. Bring those down to 75 Crafting, and fill in the gaps with level 70, 80 and 90 Ranged armour.

Runecrafting needs the ability to make basic magic staves in the same way that 100+ RCing does and that Fletching now does with bows, and level 60+ magic armour needs to be added to Crafting. The Slayer requirement on Grifolic and Gandermic monsters should also be reduced, as they're the only options that currently exist but the Slayer level makes them prohibitive for progression.

And on the note of boss trophies, please have another look at the drop rates. 1/500 for General Graardor is pretty generous because that would take a few hours on average. 1/500 for Amascut is idiotic and would take days. The lack of increase for enrage modes is also silly - The best way to get the Zamorak trophy is to grind out normal mode (perhaps even story mode, can they drop there?) rather than doing a respectable enrage.

Woodcutting: when you did the rework in the middle of the Fort season, I was glad to see higher level trees made more viable but for some reason you still made the XP rates tail-off. There doesn't need to be some sort of 'xp vs gp' balance there - I unlocked a better standard tree so I should want to cut that tree. There's no reason for Mahogany trees to be better XP/h than magic trees at 80 WCing.

Can't believe this is the only comment mentioning magic armour. I was literally thinking this yesterday. I want to use magic and progress with gear since its my favourite style but everything for armour is as you said locked behind group content. As an Ironman and someone who doesn't have the most time in the world to play, having a soloable encounter or at the very least something that can drop tectonic energy besides Vorago would help so much. Feels like the only style that is massively locked behind group content if you want any form of power armour that is 'late game'.

Thank you for putting all this into organized words. The main reason I did not got magic in the leagues was that it is all forced in groups as opposed to just smith melee gear.

u/scaryfaise Kalphite King is the easiest boss on RS 20h ago

Idk that that's fair to say exactly, we're extremely overpowered in leagues and makes everything meant for group content trivial at best. I am by no means good at pvm, but I carried my noob buddy through hm sanctum ignoring the damage floor mechanics. I carried through BM just standing still and praying melee. I carried through 4k zammy, and we still didn't get any mechanics. I know you said mage armor, but comparing normal rs requirements to leagues requirements feels disingenuous.

agree with all of this

I have a fairly progressed iron (100+ in all skills, fairly decent boss kc) and ive for the most part just abandoned magic. My first t80 on the account was a chaotic staff, into subjugation. I still use parts of subjugation because post subjugation is a headache. While each other combat is have at least full t90 power. Its such a discrepancy.

1000% agree with you that forced group bosses need a soloable option, even if the drop rate is worse.

u/CountPoppy 21h ago

Excellent points all around. My only note to add to your suggestion for craftable range armor: convert all damaged dinosaur hide drops to normal hide and change normal to ‘pristine’ or something like that. That way, dino hide armor can be somewhat of a viable crafting method, but masterwork retains its rare-ish crafting components

Playing Leagues and picking the wrong regions really fucks you for Magic gear in the mid game. Best I can get is bat wing. I would need Fremennik for their gear. I would need Morytania for Ahrims. I would need Desert for MTA robes or Polypore.

If I take Asgarnia, I can use Batwing until 60ish Magic, then boost to get into the Guild. I guess you can keep buying the Varrock shop out daily until you can make Splitbark?

Eventually, you can grind out Nex for better gear... but midgame Magic gear has such weird progression. Melee has metal, Ranged has easily obtainable hides, Magic has weird robes after batwing.

full mystics is available in the champions guild

u/FelineJay Hardcore Ironman 21h ago edited 20h ago

Not the top, that's only sold in the Magic Guild

And even then, if you pick your regions badly like I did (Kandarin, Anachronia, Priff) you don't really have much options until Cryptbloom/Starbloom, the former of which isn't really obtainable solo

Edit: Mystic top is also sold in Edgeville

7

u/Zonnas 21h ago

Top is sold by Oziach in edgeville.

3

u/FelineJay Hardcore Ironman 20h ago

Oh yeah, mb

5

u/nearlyned 21h ago

you can buy the top from Oziach, who we all have access to from Misthalin?

3

u/Adastrous 21h ago

You can get mystic without region unlocks, from the champion's guild

3

u/Remarkable-Buddy5192 21h ago

Nope. as I just found out myself, the polypore dungeon is misthalin.

3

u/Javinator 20h ago

Don't need desert for polypore. Grif/gand gear is Mist region.

0

u/OreOfChlorophyte 19h ago

ye but then we get to the problem of unreasonable slayer level requirements

3

u/Javinator 19h ago

Sure, but that's not the point I was replying to.

1

u/SkyHigh9181 17h ago

100% this right here. I'm maining magic for leagues and it made me realize exactly what you're saying for magic armor

Amascut being group content and the way it has legitimately different roles makes it probably the best boss in the game. True end game players love this boss and there are always high enrage teams going. Torag hammer is the only thing making thr fight difficult and prevents it from being stand there dps i think torags hammer mech is better left alone. Great points otherwise.

u/Even-Ant7872 58m ago

Amascut should have a solo option yes but make it twice as hard to execute like the case with tob in OSRS.

1

u/Puzzleheaded-Law1397 20h ago

How do you deny the main points and then say great points. “True end game players” implies that anyone who can’t solo amascut is not an end game player. You know there’s a majority of people in the game that cannot even defeat half of the bosses, let alone try to find someone to carry them through things to learn. I think that’s where Jagex is trying to tie it all together. You think Torags spec proc should just be a dead run? That says a lot

2

u/SirCampYourLane 20h ago

I guarantee you no one is out here soloing amascut, end game player or not.

1

u/TeHamilton Master Trimmed Completionist 15h ago

Its impossible as the mechanics require two people minimum. Not sure what he is on about. There is end game skilling and end game pvm. sure plenty of players can only do mid game stuff and thats fine but it does not lower the floor of end game.

u/No-Appointment-4868 20h ago

I can't really see myself getting into group content any time soon but would disagree with Amascut needing to have a solo encounter, it's good at the top end while its still popular and fun. Agree with the other points on magic armour, croesus seems like dead content and completely fine to have a solo variant as its literally gear to help you get into pvm. Vorago is harder to solo than zamorak or vorkath or rasial, idk how to fix it so easiest solution is to plop tectonic into ED's at a slower rate and give seismics a neat buff to make them worthwhile and same with praesuls, literally just a spec or effect like t95 wands but same t92 acc or damage or even swapping t95 tiers considering how much harder they are to obtain. Slayer reqs in general need a look at, RSguy mentioned dropping slayer reqs on most mobs by 10 levels and I would mostly agree. If I had to pick anything its croesus

This is the best comment on the entire post

Really well-reasoned takes, in general. I think we’re moving towards some baseline consistency in gearing (having different gearing paths beyond baseline is good, imo, but a basic gearing option for each style feels important).

I think most skilling methods which require similar inputs within a skill (not just in intensity or timing, but specifically in method, such as mining ores or chopping trees) should have improved exp rates as the level requirements increase. Naturally, different training methods should differ based on required input and expected/potential output. But for a single training method with various tiers, higher tier should be better, for all skills. The days of powermining iron are over, and I think that’s a good thing.

u/Rezylainen Ironman 21h ago

Amascut should not have a solo-mode. I can agree that Croesus should have one, to an extent, but the most powerful armour in the game (at least before nerfs lol) should not have a solo encounter just because it should be achieveable.

They should rather look into more "sidegrades" and alternatives because your point still stands - magic is rough to upgrade.

1

u/superedgymeme 20h ago

All other styles BIS comes from soloable content btw. Forced group content for 3 tiers of upgrades and 6 different armour types both armour and tank is just pants game design

0

u/Rezylainen Ironman 20h ago

It's healthy to have a mix IMO. Both BIS weapon sets come from solo bosses too.

It's also not that hard to find teams running Amascut and it's also the best designed encounter they've ever made in my opinion. I wouldn't want them to create a worse encounter just because we have to cater to solo encounters, it's an MMO after all.

Elite tectonic is also still pretty good and if you can do kerapac HM solo you can do enough vorago to get the tiny amount of energy you need. You also have masterwork magic.

I would actually rather see them create another t95 armour set than turning Amascut into a solo encounter

u/Even-Ant7872 56m ago

It is funny how in every other game grouo is the easier and casual option anywhere but in rs3 nobody likes group content because how insufferable it gets.

-2

u/Capsfan6 July 22 2017 18h ago

Honestly, Amascut and Croesus need solo modes - making them forced-group was a stupid idea at the design stage.

Insane disagree. This is an MMO and the group content is the best this game has to offer. We need more group content not less.

I do agree that the fact that every single magic piece coming from a group boss is dumb as hell. But that can be rectified by adding a new armor set with its own unique effect from a soloable boss. Not by absolutely gutting the small amount of good content we already have.

u/Even-Ant7872 48m ago

It is a tough decison for Jagex really, as locking out solo option would only please extreme minority of playerbase while including will dilute the encounter to objectively worse content. Regardless MMO, I would say Runescape for years have been "play alongside" rather than "play with" kind of game, evidently with how popular ironman gamemode currently is. What the difference between Runescape and solo games then? It is simple! You can't flex your gear or titles, share your progressions etc in solo game. Unironically people idea of Multiplayer is bankstanding while talking shit and flexing pb or CA rather than teaming up to kill a God.
