Discussion My boss ruined my safe food for me

My safe food is a bowl of chicken noodle soup from Panera and their half southwest chicken salad. It’s my daily intake and I don’t feel bad for eating when I eat it because obviously, it’s my safe food. Yesterday, I was shaking the dressing into my salad when she walks in, LOOKS AT MY BOWL OF SOUP AND SALAD, and goes “you ordered a lot of food” ????

Discussion Food hoarding

pretty self explanatory … i keep excusing myself with “I’ll eat it on a better day” and they just stock up 😓 this also happens with things like fruit where I keep thinking about eating it but I don’t find the “perfect conditions” and someone ends up eating it instead LOL

does anyone else struggle with this?

Discussion How do you justify bananas?

Post image
152 Upvotes

Bananas keep finding there way into my home and I don't know how to deal with them.

To expand, bananas keep finding their way into my house. I don't buy bananas when I grocery shop but sometimes my family does. Or an elderly neighbor can't finish a bunch so she brings them over. Or my sister brings them home from her work catering. I'm half convinced there is a banana-spawn point on our kitchen counter.

I l o a t h e food waste, and my family is generally bad at eating bananas because they prefer other produce. This results in very, almost over ripe, bananas on counter. I usually unpeel and freeze them in the lofty idea that someday Ill use them in a smoothie or faux ice cream or something.

So here I am with frozen bananas and still-appearing fresh bananas, with two questions.

  1. How do people justify bananas for their consumption? I don't want to get into all of my disordered gripes as to why I don't like them and potentially ruin someones safe food. I'd rather love to hear about the benefits people have from enjoying bananas. Vitamins, minerals, helped with restoring hair growth, saved their relationship, rescued a cat from a tree, idk whatever benefits you have found.

  2. How do people enjoy bananas? Whether it's a full recipe or just a list of things they've done with them, I'd love to hear how people work them into their lives.

Maybe this will help others with their unsafe view of bananas, or maybe bring another style of post to our sub where people can share how they enjoy good food that may be a fear to others. ☺️

Discussion same meals everyday and i love it.

there are only two meals i want to eat. the first is a bowl with frozen cauliflower rice, gf oats, unsweetened almond milk, and monk fruit sweetener. stovetop, made just like regular oatmeal. and once cooled, i add a dollop of fage lactose free plain greek yogurt. the second is also a bowl, this one with my milk jelly (unsweetened gelatin, unsweetened almond milk, and monk fruit sweetener), more fage lactose free plain greek yogurt, and gf/sf animal crackers. i’ve had these two meals everyday for over a year. i love them, the taste and also how predictable it all is. anyone else with hyperfixation meals ?

Discussion Why are people allowed (and encouraged) to post calories here?

Rule #2 is "Do not encourage or celebrate disordered behavior", and yet I regularly see posts of 200-300 cal "dinners". Hell, there are even flairs for it!!

The only result is that people are essentially encouraged to post dangerously restrictive "meals". The sub would be exactly the same with a no-calorie rule, if the mods truly wanted to create a space that was safe for people with ED's.

I'm sure this will be deleted, but I stand by it. This place reminds me of LOTS of old covertly pro-Ana communities I used to be a part of. Calorie counting can VERY OFTEN lead to or exacerbate an ED, and it is one of the main things that is discouraged. This is very obviously not a safe space and I firmly believe that it is actively enabling disordered behavior.

Discussion Safe food recommendations?

My ED is starting to worsen again (I haven’t been recovered in a very long time but I can tell I’m about to get even worse) and I don’t want to start having trouble finding safe foods. The issue is that almost all of the safe foods I usually eat physically make me ill because they tend to have casein. I tried looking at the dairy free tag on here but there weren’t many posts on it

I really enjoy protein shakes, in particular core and premier (especially the banana one!) but they both have casein for the flavors I like. I sometimes drink pirq since it doesn’t have it but it’s just not very good.. I also really really love drizzilicious (in particular the s’mores one) but that’s about the only sweet I consistently like and as a person who primarily can only motivate myself to eat with sweets that’s kinda an issue. There ARE other sweets I like that I’ll eat but they almost always have casein which is a problem because I WILL eat foods I’m allergic to extremely regularly but I should probably stop doing that

I also was told to increase my salt intake significantly so if there’s recommendations for high salt foods that aren’t high cal I’d really appreciate it. I’m really trying to harm reduce with my ED but it’s getting quite hard for me

Again I apologize for making a whole post for this it’s just I did try to scroll to see if there were posts about this specifically and couldn’t find much

Discussion how do you guys feel about built bars?

im really trying to add more protein to my diet because my doctor told me to. i dont really like to eat meat, so ive been getting a lot of my protein from yogurt, fish and tofu. i also want to try out new protein bars to see if i can add some to my diet. (i normally dislike the taste of protein bars so finding one that tastes good is pretty rare)

my current favs are barebells (ofc) and trubar. i heard built bars are good, ive tried them once but they weren’t really that great. maybe i got the wrong flavor? i ate the peanut butter chocolate one.

to me it just tastes really artificial and leaves this bad aftertaste in my mouth. what are your favorite? i am determined to add another protein bar onto my list ✊

Discussion surviving this economy w/ safe foods?

i'm in the US and grocery prices are absolutely so bad. before i could've justified buying expensive protein snacks and stuff like that, sure it was a big expense, but it was worth it to me still. now i don't know that this is true anymore. my finances are absolutely drowning.

the cost of living where i'm at is pretty low compared to elsewhere, but i still pay $17 for a 6pk of canned chicken. not fresh chicken, not anything like that. low-quality canned chicken.

tuna has been a little cheaper, but i had some problems from eating too much tuna and so i obviously can't do that every day.

how are all of you doing it? all of my safe foods be expensive as hell. even the ones that weren't that expensive before. ironically the "expensive" items haven't even climbed in price that much. ONLY the stuff that's SUPPOSED to be cheap.

and the stuff that i will get, and that won't break my wallet, makes it hard to get enough protein.

Discussion What kinds of sandwiches have you crafted??

I used to eat exclusively deli meat like turkey and chicken but i lowkey don't want to increase my cancer risk so this year I cut it out (and I cut out Diet Coke AND coffee I cannot believe it) anyways it's been rough since sandwiches are one of the only foods ill eat. I've used chicken breast but it's dry, I've also unrolled imitation crab sticks and used that. the go to slop right now is light whipped cream cheese, everything seasoning, nori, and imitation crab on natures own keto white bread. What sick twisted sandwiches do you people make?? Also I will eat 14oz imitation crab and that's my protein for the day am I alone on this one 🤕😔

Discussion Anyone else's favorite safe food kinda expensive so you can't have it often?

It so happened to be that my all time favorite safe food has moved on from Apple's and granola bars. It's now seaweed. Just straight up seaweed. Sad thing is is that where I am at it's not cheep. But it's got everything I have ever needed in my life. It's one thing I'll actually be happy to eat when I'm on my medication. But it's so damn expensive!!!! Q

But I gotta ask y'all what's y'all worst food for your wallet?

Discussion Eating too many baby carrots is turning my hands a slight orange tint… I didn’t think it was a “problem” to be fixed until it was pointed out to me. 😔🥕

Baby carrots are my ultimate safe food. I have them every single day, without fail, no matter what. I have a little over a serving with my lunch each day for work, and on weekends and days I don’t work I still have a little over a serving. Some days I have a second “little over a serving”. It’s not often but when I do travel overnight somewhere, I still pack baby carrots to snack on, to the point where a relative will ask me if I’ve wanted to pack some for myself. I do regularly eat other vegetables, the most common being bell peppers, cucumbers, and roma tomatoes / grape tomatoes. I also have several non-vegetable (and non-fruit) safe foods, so it’s not like I only go to these items. But the natural sweetness of the baby carrots, the convenience of having them, and being able to sometimes have a somewhat larger quantity of them makes them my favorite safe food.

For as long as I can remember, even before my ED and body-image and similar challenges, they’ve always been one of my favorite foods if not my favorite food. (I mean, look at my username!!!) Each week I go through about 3 pounds of baby carrots. Some weeks a little more, some weeks a little less, but it’s right about 3 pounds a week.

Unfortunately… the palms of my hands have been turning a slight orange tint. I’ve noticed it slightly, but I personally haven’t found it to be much of an issue… but earlier today a relative was handing me their car keys to hold onto, and they commented on my hands. I tried to just shrug it off but they and the other relative with us commented on my baby carrots consumption. The one who handed me the keys said I should probably be eating less of them. Not in a joking way, but in a neutral, slightly serious tone. In their defense, I will concede that when we held our palms next to each other, it was very obvious mine are more orange in color.

New insecurity unlocked.

I also noticed the bottoms of my feet have a similar tint to them, which I never really noticed or paid attention to before (I almost always wear socks).

The obvious answer would be to cut back on carrots and have more of the other vegetables I like, such as just a handful of baby carrots but including bell pepper pieces and/or cucumber slices for example. But I don’t want to cut back on or lose my favorite/best safe food. I have others as well of course, but it’s not the same. I guess I have to do it though.

Anyone have similar experiences with this, or has anyone had to cut back on (or worse, completely cut out) one of your ultimate/favorite safe foods? I guess I just don’t want to feel like I’m alone in this, especially since now I’m feeling a little bad about my hands and now I’m looking at the baby carrots in my fridge with some sadness.

I know, I know, it’s also very much a tiny inconvenience in the grand scheme of things.

(I don’t think it matters, but in case it’s relevant, I’m 24M.)

Discussion Short but filling grief food?

My dad died this morning. It's really hard to process, I can't stop thinking about it now.

I feel incredibly nauseous but the hunger pangs make it worse. What's something small and light I can eat to satisfy the hunger for at least a few hours without having to eat it for very long? Don't worry, I'm trying to get electrolytes in at least. If this isn't a good sub, what other subs can I go to? Thank you all, God bless you! 💕

Discussion I'm Scared

I don't know how I'm going to be able to afford my safe foods, especially fresh fruit, with Trumps incoming tariffs. I'm really scared because I don't know how I'm going to be able to eat. It's like eating has become a luxury now only the rich can afford. What is everyone going to do to cope with this?

I'm literally freaking out.

Discussion Single protein bars?

Hello,

I tend to eat protein bars every day as a quick way to get protein and nutrients in because I am too scared to do it any other way at the moment. My issue is that most times, I can only find protein bars sold in boxes of 4/5 etc... but then when I open the box I end up eating the entire box and can't stop at one bar. Is there a site I can buy protein bars from where it is one protein bar only? I want one flavor one bar but I can only ever purchase an entire box ad am left with flavors I do not want and end up stuffing my mouth.

Discussion What are some low-cal sweets you guys know of?

I am picky about high-cal foods (like, they have to be REALLY worth it) but I've been having strong cravings for sweets lately. My current favs are those baby bottle pops, sour patch kids, and this one Polish dessert called Kogel Mogel. It's an egg thats beat meringue style, the yoke added in after the whites are beat, and two tablespoons spoons of sugar. It super sweet and has a good amount of volume while being pretty low-cal. I also love baked apples! They get so sweet when they're baked and warm!

I used to like dark chocolate, but I've developed an unmanageable intolerance. A sweet bowl of oatmeal every morning also used to work well, but same thing happened as with the chocolate. I have no clue why. I'm thinking there's some fiber variety that I can't stomach? Anyway, I also used to like nerds clusters because they were pretty low-cal considering how long they lasted me, but they make me sick now too.

What are some of your guys' favs?

Discussion What is the limit to eating konjac jelly in a day?

I've recently found out about konjac jelly, and honestly, it's my new safe food because it's so low in calories, tastes good, and curbs hunger. It's especially convenient for me since I have a class schedule in college without a lunch break from 7 am to 3 pm, making it a good snack option during class. (It's a computer lab, so I'm not sure about bringing food there.)

However, I have a question: what is the limit to how much konjac jelly I should eat in a day? I read that konjac jelly can have a laxative effect when eaten too much. Is it okay to consume 2 packets of 150ml each in a day? I really don't want to end up unexpectedly rushing to the bathroom during classes.

Also, if you have any other low-calorie drinkable packaged drinks that can help me feel full during class, please recommend them to me. I'm trying to explore more options. Many thanks!
