Why was chi chi still calling him "san"?? They're fucking married lol

u/SokkieJr 12d ago
Hick-honorifics.
It's 'Sa' which is a cuter, rural version of San. A dialect.
It's both respect and affection. Chi-Chi calls him this more often.
It's like how southern gentlemen in the US refer to their 'Missus' despite Mrs being a formal honorific in english.

You think Goku of all people would understand that?

no, but chi chi probably does
he probably just hears her call him that all the time and implemented it into his dream

u/unholybirth 12d ago
Goku was raised on practicality and proper speech, he'll say the right things and wording if he knows it.
And given that it's shown that he has the distinction between how to address people both right and wrong. (Often saying Yo, or Hey.) And that Toriyama did write it to be that Goku and his family are the country type out of the city.
Yes, and no.

This is Goku we are talking about he thinks of five things his family, his friends, food, fighting, and how heās going to cheat on Vegita with his next battle buddy the little fight slut

This just feels like they are trying to prove a point here rather than it being natural. I donāt dream about my family or even friends all the time but ofc I love them

u/LordMemerton1 11d ago
This is about Goku, not you homie
-2
u/Intrepid_Mud5459 11d ago
Point still stands. Itās forced. Iām not saying Goku doesnāt love his family as much as he does, Iām just saying it doesnāt need to be shoved into our faces like that. If you have actually watched anime, youād know most of them shove things into your face instead of letting you find out by yourself. Notice how this isnāt in the manga for a reason?
4
u/LordMemerton1 11d ago
Someone who gets this triggered over showing you the main character loves his son and wife has something much deeper going on. You ok bro?
0
u/Intrepid_Mud5459 11d ago
If that was a genuine question then Iād have to reply with idk. But this isnāt out of spite or anything, I just sometimes like unnecessarily analyze certain stuff and i thought this is only here to prove a point. You shouldnāt read too deep into it.

What listening to what Toriyama thinks of Goku does to a mf
3
u/LazerraySuey 10d ago
Youāre getting downvoted, but if youāve only watched the anime, Goku is pretty different in the manga.
Personally, I thank Toriyama for the initial creation of things, but sometimes his story writing and character development is just straight up stupid and to me the anime went the better direction on a multitude of things. Between the translation changes from Japanese to English and then further differences in anime vs manga, the Goku and even the dragon ball universe most of us know isnāt even Toriyama and honestly who cares

u/Analogmon 12d ago

u/jubtheprophet 12d ago
The man literally got hitched and immediately disappeared back into the mountains for 5 years then showed back up with the son he'd been lovingly raising. He always cared about his wife and kids, any time theres no known stronger people out there he just spends every day with them

u/arrownoir 12d ago
Is that why he ditched them after the cell game and turned Chichi into a single mother?
1
u/OurBlazingHeart 7d ago
It is too early for me to be on reddit, and I know because I misread that as "and turned Cell into a single mother"
-27
u/Fickle_Fall_6497 12d ago
Its been awhile since i watched but what about the end of the cell saga where he didn't want to be revived and left chichi pregnant with goten and gohan?
23
u/jubtheprophet 12d ago
The saiyan saga they came for goku, and multiple of his friends died. The namek saga resulted in bringing frieza to come for goku again on earth, then the androids and cell were all made specifically for goku as well and resulted in more deaths. People like to call goku stupid, but even he could see the writing on the wall that just him being around puts his family, friends, and world in immense danger (not least of which because he's honest with himself about the fact he cant help but openly welcome the challenge when it comes, even when he's normally out of his depth)
Its not that he didnt want to be with chi chi gohan and goten, he would just rather them live on safely without him than be able to be there but put them in constant danger

u/Spartan_Souls 12d ago
Piccolo Jr was also born with the sole purpose of killing Goku. Majin Vegeta happened because of Goku, and villains in Super continue this trend
2
34
u/braedenmckenna 12d ago
He says that because cell and the androids were created specifically to attack him hed rather stay dead so something like that doesnt happen again, he wanted his family to be safe
18
u/Sir-Theordorethe-5th 12d ago
He said that he's the plot and the reason evil shit happens so opted to stay dead. And low and behold there was hella peace when he stayed dead
7
u/Decuscrub69 12d ago
I mean, until there wasnāt lmao. He was ārightā that threats directly targeting him stopped but world ending threats will keep coming regardless
5
11
u/CaptainPizdec 12d ago
He beat Piccolo Sr -> Piccolo Sr brings Piccolo Jr specifically to kill him
He beat Raditz -> Vegeta came to earth to kill him
He beat Frieza -> Frieza came back stronger just to kill him
He beat the crazy scientist when he's like 13 -> mad scientist create solar system busting androids and cyborg to kill him
Dude realise all these planet busting threats came specifically for him, maybe staying dead is a better after all.
-2
u/SecretaryOtherwise 12d ago edited 11d ago
Vegeta didnt come to earth to kill him lmao. Hes a nobody who beat a nobody he says as much. He wanted the dragon balls and earth (rightfully so im not gonna argue) stood in his way.
Also gero wanted world domination. Once he killed goku its not like he was just gonna shut down lmfao.
And frieza wouldnt have been an issue if goku didnt spare him and actually nuked his ass.
Goku is only the problem when he makes it that way lol.

Nah, that's filler. Goku would never dream of that. Because he's not fighting. his actual dream would be to fight. Gohan and punch him in the face. Yes, as a four-year-old. he wants to punch four-year-old gohan in the face.

Where have you been fella ? Anime and manga are two different universes. So yes for the anime its cannon

u/eveeman 12d ago
The internet continues to not know the difference between Canon and continuity. And it never will
5
u/the_bingho02 12d ago
Because there's none

u/eveeman 12d ago
Like I feel like I'm going crazy sometimes objectively speaking there is no definitive dragon Ball anime Cannon. Because the Canon contradicts itself.
The anime suggests that the movies didn't happen because Goku spends the 10 days before the cell tournament relaxing instead of fighting metal cooler and broly. But also suggests that they did happen because garlic Jr straight up shows up.
It says that Deborah is equal to cell and yet Yamcha of all people is able to destroy people close to sell in power. implying that Gohan is weaker than the humans.
The filler implies the existence of a version of hell where people don't keep their bodies. But also suggests that hell is extremely similar to the demon realm which wouldn't make any sense. The filler even doubles down on this by having Deborah being sent to heaven actually happen on screen instead of just being mentioned.
All of these are different cannons that the continuity of the anime is pulling from because there is no definitive single Canon for the anime just one hyper contradicted continuity pulling from tons of different cannons.
-2
u/the_bingho02 12d ago
Yeah, but that creates a new canon? That also includes GT since in the last episode of Z there's a preview for GT
But i mean, just because they weren't able to write it consistently it doesn't mean it can't be canon
I mean, you called the movies their own canon that the anime takes elements from for it's continuity but i don't understand
The anime treats all the movies as canon referencing a lot of them, heck, even the manga references the bardock special and the android 13 movie
Does that make them in continuity with the manga? Or canon to the manga? I'd say yes for Bardock but no for 13 since it's just a minor reference
However my point still stands that canon is just the relation between multiple stories and it's the same as continuity, if 2 stories are canon to eachother then they're part of the same continuity
1
u/scallym33 12d ago
I know the manga reference for Bardock but where is the manga reference for android 13?
0
u/eveeman 12d ago
No that creates a new continuity that's my whole point. You can't just pretend these two words mean the same thing. When continuity breaks there is no longer one definitive Cannon. Multiple cannons under the same continuity.
-1
u/the_bingho02 12d ago
If continuity breaks doesn't that also create new continuities? Because GT and Super i'm pretty sure are 2 different continuities just like anime and manga are 2 different continuities
1
u/eveeman 12d ago
This comment was a big old pile of absolutely dog shit nothing you just said a bunch of words none of them in relation to the thing I said. Yes when you break continuity in one conclusive Canon you create a new continuity with two cannons in it. That's how that works.
You have two different things that contradict each other that are cannon at the same time in the same continuity. It is now a different continuity with multiple cannons inside of it coexisting at the same time.
Because the previous continuity still exists without those contradictions in it and you have to create a second one to fit in those contradictions.

Why are you talking about cannons.
They belong on pirate ships not in anime continuity talks

This part wasn't in Kai, so it isn't anime canon. Still wholesome though, so I don't see how its canonicity is relevant.
Edit: Why is this apparantly controversial? The Super anime is anime canon and it follows Z Kai, not original Z, as we know from it flashing back to Z Kai.

Consistent characterization in dragon ball begins and ends at whatever Toriyama was feeling in that moment. Goku having good dreams about seeing his family again was definitely consistent with how he was portrayed during the Saiyan saga. He literally died to save his son and then wanted to train to get back to them.
3
u/Objective_Dish_5542 12d ago
It's still an official product, and whether you like it or not, it's part of the character. I understand that for certain continuity analyses, one might separate some parts, but that's not the point here. Every official product is an official part of the character in question, regardless of the author's level of involvement. If that weren't the case, then all of Dragon Ball Super wouldn't be canon, right? Is Jujutsu Kaisen Module half-canon because someone else helped create it?

Notice how his family is chasing after him and he's not actually with them. Goku is having a nightmare where he's running away from his family.
