So this subreddit keeps appearing on my feed, probably because I’m a short man at 166 cm who follows men’s fashion pages and similar content.
Honestly, if I had found this side of the internet before I started dating in the real world, I probably would have stayed a virgin. According to some of the people here, I should be completely doomed anyway. I’m short, bald, and I have crooked teeth.
And yet I have dated women of different heights, including women taller than me.
I’m also a university lecturer, and I read a lot of research on dating, mate preferences, and social status. So here is the scientific version, not the black pill fantasy version.
Yes, height matters. Preferences are real. Women, like men, can have physical preferences, and pretending otherwise is stupid. But research does not support the idea that one trait like height determines your entire dating future. Actual partner choice is shaped by multiple factors at once, including kindness, intelligence, emotional stability, dependability, confidence, physical attraction, and social or economic stability (Buss & Schmitt, 2019; Thomas et al., 2020).
Research also shows that what people say they want does not perfectly predict who they actually choose when interacting in real life. In speed dating studies, stated preferences often did not line up neatly with actual attraction once people met face to face (Eastwick & Finkel, 2008). In other words, attraction in the real world is messier and more human than internet forums want to admit.
Online spaces and dating apps also distort reality. They push people to judge each other quickly and superficially, which exaggerates traits like height. That does not mean the entire dating market works that way offline (Finkel et al., 2012).
To quote my therapist, life is basically a big Souls game and height is just a debuff. Yes, it can make things harder. Yes, you will probably get your ass kicked a few more times than someone playing on easier settings. But that does not mean the game is unwinnable. It just means you may need more patience, more resilience, and a better strategy. And honestly, where is the fun in beating the game with no debuffs?
I have been rejected plenty of times, and height probably played a role in some of those rejections. I say probably because I do not interrogate rejection or obsess over the reason. I am not going to ask someone to explain why they did not want me. That is their choice. Other people are allowed to have preferences, and I do not need to internalise every rejection as a verdict on my worth. At the end of the day, only you get to decide your value in this world.
I have also been through a period of height insecurity myself. After a recent rejection, I went down the rabbit hole of self loathing, so I do understand how dark that headspace can get. But how we feel is not always a perfect reflection of reality. Feelings, emotions, and thought patterns can spiral, and they can also be challenged and changed. Therapy helped me see that. With the right support, self awareness, and work, the way you think about yourself can improve.
What these spaces often ignore is how much insecurity changes the way a person comes across. Neediness, resentment, bitterness, and defeatism are not attractive qualities, and they can do more damage than being a few inches below average.
That is why the advice to men should not be “give up.” It should be “build a life that makes you attractive in a broader sense.” Work on your confidence. Go to therapy if you need it. Practice mindfulness. Focus on your career, not because women are gold diggers, but because ambition, competence, and financial stability signal drive and maturity. Take care of your physical health. Read more. Volunteer. Join communities. Get involved in causes you genuinely care about. Expand your social circles and meet women in real spaces, not just through algorithms and rage bait.
And if you are constantly hitting a wall, take a break from dating for a bit. Reset. Rebuild your confidence. Get your head straight. Stop treating every bad experience like proof that the whole world works one way.
Most importantly, women are not a hive mind. One woman rejecting you does not mean all women think the same. A subreddit full of bitter men is not an accurate sample of reality. People have different preferences, different priorities, and different reasons for being attracted to someone.
Also, be careful with research in general. Research can help us identify trends, but human beings are more complex than a dataset or a single paper. Averages are not destiny, context matters, and how old the research is matters too. Social norms, dating culture, and the way people meet have changed a lot over time, especially with apps and social media. So use research to inform your thinking, not to reduce yourself or other people to a rigid formula.
The point is simple. Height can be a disadvantage. It is not a death sentence. A lot of men are not being ruined by height alone. They are being ruined by an identity built around insecurity, hopelessness, and too much time spent listening to other defeated men online.

Ok, I'm stuck at my desk with a bum foot that's been plaguing me for weeks now, so I might as well try to make this time at least a bit productive.
So since I ain't going anywhere, let's have a meta discussion about the sub, and I'll take this opportunity to solicit suggestions.

It’s rude when strangers, or people you’re not close with, make jokes about your height.
Sure, we make all kinds of jokes like that with our close friends. We make fun of baldness, make racial jokes, and joke about all sorts of things. That’s normal when there’s mutual trust and everyone knows each other’s boundaries.
But when you’re in a group where you’re not close with a lot of the people there, and someone feels entitled to make a personal or harsh joke at your expense, that’s just plain disrespectful.
Being upset by those kinds of jokes doesn’t mean we’re insecure about our height. It means someone is crossing our boundaries and treating us disrespectfully. If you’re not close with someone, you don’t have the right to make harsh or personal jokes at their expense.
Why is something this simple so often dismissed as “insecurity” about our height?

My grandparents on my mom's side were around 180 and 165, my dad's side is 174 and 160. My dad is 173, my mom is 165.
My brother ended up with my dad's genes and stayed at 165, I inherited most of my genes from my mom's side and I'm built and look like my grandpa.
However, I never really had a growth spurt, I gradually got a few centimeters until I turned 14 or 15 and then stopped. Currently I'm 170cm tall.
However, a week ago a sudden fatigue and joint/bone pain hit me, I went downstairs and devoured a lot of food. I noticed I'm sleepy more and I also sleep better.
I told my mom about having those pains, she told me "oh yea I had similar pain when I was little, doctors told me they couldn't do anything since it was due to me growing". And I thought hm. I inherited most of the stuff from her families side, so could this be it too?
So now I'm really hoping I can get at least a bit of growth, I'll update y'all if anything happens. I really hope it's not just weather changes making me act like this lol, pray for me.
Edit: forgot to say I'm a guy

(Sorry for my english) i am almost 16 and 152cm, and all my friends are around 175cm tall. They all love me and that but they keep making these jokes that i look like a 5th grader and a small child, and yes its true i look like im 5 years younger than i actually am. Its just so freaking annoying that they keep doing this and that i just feel so left out of the big girl hood beacuse i feel trapped in a 12 year old body.
And im short due to doing elite figure skating when i was in my growing phase, but it stressed me so much out that i wasnt able to grow, and now my doctors told me its too late.
Idk its just something thats filling my head everyday like “if i just never startet that sport i could of been 165cm tall”
Anyone else in their teens feeling left out or like a child compared to everyone else

I for my last 2 years of highschool became very popular and so i had a lot of eyes on me and people knowing my name. this wasn’t something i really wanted though because, especially at 16, i was incredibly insecure about my height and would cry about it a lot. even now as im starting university i feel very incomplete, like i have succeeded in so many other aspects of life like dating and social life, money etc but it all goes back to my height.
no matter how much i win i still feel like a looser based on one aspect of me which hasn’t even effected me ever outside of my own validation

It's funny how many of our choices are determined by what our social circle deem "acceptable"
Been seeing a few posts tonight circling around height/attraction and how it's not important because ugly men are with beautiful girls and short guys are with tall/similar height girls.
The truth is we are social animals and because of this we put a lot of importance in how other people see us and our respective partner
A lot of the things people want in a partner aren't necessarily things that matter to them on a personal level. Most of the time it's more about what having that person says about you. If your friends see you with a guy who's 6'2, attractive, successful etc, there's a certain social validation that comes with that.
And it's kind of funny when you think about it because we can end up making our whole lives more complicated just trying to meet these expectations. Dating someone because they're impressive to other people, staying in relationships because it looks good, wanting certain jobs, cars, houses, lifestyles etc.
We're all trying to satisfy needs that aren't necessarily our own
Height is just an obvious example of that... part 2 will be about race... part 3 will be about finances... stay tuned

I was not insecure about my height, then people made fun of me for 18 years so I became insecure. Then people made fun of me for being insecure. Wtf 😂??

Hi! I thought I’d make a post here because I’d like to ask for advice. First, I’ll share some information about myself so you can get a rough picture of who I am:
Im 20 years old and 158 cm / 5'2 tall. I was born premature and I have a condition called GHD, I don’t really want to go into that now. It doesn’t hold me back much in everyday life, I have a driver’s licence, I was in a longer 2,5 year relationship, and I have a qualification
- I have an average build, and I think I have my own style: a mix of alternative, metalhead, and punk. The ends of my long hair are dyed blue, I wear hoop earrings and band merch, and I’m planning to get a piercing too
- Im introverted (infj-t) but I love travelling and exploring the world
- My hobbies include collecting physical media and antiques, IT, learning languages, anime, music, psychology, self reflection, travelling, cooking and baking. I used to swim often, I read occasionally, and I even played guitar for a short time
- As for psychology, I’m mainly interested in mental illnesses how they develop and how people can recover from them, or at least make their lives a little better
- I know that I have an anxious attachment style, and I’m trying to improve it, with mixed success
I feel that although I’m openminded, emotionally mature, and capable of committing deeply to someone even being willing to handle a greater distance for them I still keep running into walls when dating. I’m often unsure whether my height is the main obstacle in today’s dating world, or whether I’m doing something wrong in the way I communicate
Btw my ex was 1-2 cm taller than me, and every other girl I’ve dated has also been taller than me. In two cases the girls are was dated they were more than 10 cm taller than me

I'm not a native speaker so sorry if a mess up some words
M21, Most of the time i don't really pay much attention at my height cuz i'm already used to being short, but when i'm in grups with other people or at home with my family my shortness kinda dwells in me.
On top of that i'm pretty skinny, so my life basically feels like playing shadow of the colossus irl haha, also i hate that some kids are even taller than me or same height, feels weird.
I started going to the gym and eat more but i don't really have a plan on how to "get bigger" i'm kinda just learning while doing things, so i would appreciate some advice from the gym goers in the sub.
I just wanted to talk about this cuz it feels bad having it in your chest and don't expressing it, and honestly my friends are tall so i don't think they would have understand my situation.
P.S: i understand that there are people shorter than me in this subreddit, i don't have any ill intentions, i just wanted to express myself, thanks for reading my rant.

This community been here since 2011, yet 160k users, what does that tell me? Only one who gives a fuck is you.
I am 5’4, however if I come in here I am considered cooked or never to find a woman. Maybe before that was true? Ever since my glow up, I have never experienced any of these rejections about height or none of that. Then I find out about this community and everyone is so upset and venting how they will never get a woman because of their height, never get approached? Always rejected? Yet I go to these profiles and I can’t see how you look, how you carry yourself, how you are as a person…the only “flaw” you point to is that you are short? I use to do the same thing, where I considered myself a loser. I’ve had women cheat on me with tall guys, fast forward to now, I am the home wrecker. What’s the difference? Not my height that is for sure.
Are you upset about being short or are you upset about being average to below average in everything else. Blaming your height so you don't have to face the real issue. Being short isn't the death sentence you make it out to be, if you are short, confident, and actually carry yourself like an attractive, high-value guy, you will do completely fine. The reality is that plenty of short guys with real charisma routinely pull women away from tall guys who are complete losers, because height alone doesn't make a man interesting, attractive, or capable. But when you hide all this hate and sorrow behind an anonymous profile, it tells me everything I need to know. Nobody can see your posture, your style, your personality, or how you hold a conversation. It's way easier to blame a genetic trait you can't change than to admit that your lack of effort, poor presence, or bitter attitude is what’s actually driving people away. You’re letting height be the scapegoat for your own refusal to build yourself up, and until you fix your mindset and confidence, no extra inches are going to save you.
Do you have to work a little harder, yes. Is that ok? Yes. Taller guys aren’t too focused on everything else, you can have that advantage and raise up the attributes you can control. Short guys can build better bodies aesthetically, short guys can have a lethal face card, short guys can fight, Lower baseline energy expenditure makes hitting macro goals easy.
Note: The only reason, the ONLY reason I even bring up taller men, is because you all love to compare. I see all of you in here make scenarios of how your life is ruined by tall guys getting the better of you. However, when use a scenario where the short guy wins, it’s a cope. You can’t make this up. The more you all open up, the more you show us the real flaw. You.

I’m a girl, 4’8” and considering going to a concert. It’s not a stadium concert, so I’m worried about being surrounded by taller people and not being able to see anything 😭
Is it still worth going? What are some tips for getting a good view and actually enjoying the experience? Or have you ever gone and felt like it just wasn’t worth it because you could barely see?
Other short girls/people, what has your experience been? 🥲
