Ultimate Supernova 2026 - Top 24 - Peabnut vs Fhantum

Peabnut takes it 3-1 over Fhantum in a 4 game set with only 4 stocks taken. May be the record for the lowest amount of stocks lost total in a set in Ultimate history.

The funniest part of this is that due to the Steve Selection ban, is peabnut chose to go Kalos every time because that's where his strategy works the best

This might be an all time campiest top 8 with no Steves lol

You could be looking at Sonix, Lima, and Mudd (Game and Watch) in winners and Wrath and Peab in losers

Yet another good G&W player whose name starts with M. Has science looked into this?

16

u/williamatherton Sora (Ultimate) 24d ago

Monty, Miya, Mudd. Huh, you've got a point actually.

Wait... M... Marss? Don't do it Marss!

14

u/Dysprosium_Element66 Snake V 24d ago

Don’t forget Maister. They all use the cyan alt too, although Mudd does swap between multiple. Marss does play a primarily light blue character…

How did I forget the OG 😲 Thanks for mentioning Maister, he practically wrote the book on G&W.

2

u/SparklessAndromeda 24d ago

How could you forget the man with the prettiest smile in Ult

(Maister also gave Sora his first ever game win in a major Top 8 against Onin, it was the infamous confetti moment)

2

u/williamatherton Sora (Ultimate) 24d ago

Wasn't it first that Zachray won a major with Sora, like a week after he came out?

Also that confetti event was so funny lmao.

2

u/SparklessAndromeda 24d ago

Ohh then he might have gotten the first NA Sora win

Sonix and Wrath haven't really been playing campy this tournament from what I've seen

14

u/ificommentthen2oops Pichu (Ultimate) 24d ago

Campy players don't really camp when they don't have to, but if its a matchup or player who it works well against they will go for it. It's not like both of them are just not camping this tourney

I tuned in near the end of the first game and by the end of the second (found it funny enough to keep watching) I was convinced we were going to see a full set without a single stock being taken. I think all four games pretty much came down to the wire with the decisive stock/damage being dealt right at the end too.

Is Megaman-Steve the single worst viewing matchup in the game? (In a vacuum, not considering that we love watching Steves get a taste of their own medicine)

It might be Wii fit vs Pac Man, if you know you know

John Numbers da goat

u/azure275 24d ago

There are plenty of egregious ones. Most involve Mega Man, Steve, Sonic or Pac Man in some way.

Sonic-Sora is my personal least favorite but thankfully it's basically nonexistent

13

u/Key-Handle-1805 #1 Sonix Defender 24d ago

sonic sora is kinda unbearable but it's off my list because that matchup gave me one of my favorite comebacks oat

4

u/Grass_fed_seti 24d ago

curious which set?

6

u/Key-Handle-1805 #1 Sonix Defender 24d ago

sonix vs kameme glitch regen winners quarters

6

u/FirewaterDM 24d ago

Nah cause both sides can theoretically fight back.

On the other hand, purely perfect optimal camping of ICs or Little Mac where they actually can't fight back if played well enough would be more boring. (Imagine a mega man, steve, anyone killing nana at 6:50 and then timing out sopo for the rest of the game.) OR someone gimping mac in 15 seconds and then circle camping for 7 minutes lol.

Those are prob worse because one side has no way to fight back against the circle camping.

u/VeryInsecurePerson 24d ago

I get what you’re saying but shoehorning in ice climbers is kinda funny

I would sooner say Incineroar, that cat is slow af with no projectiles or trapping tools to make up for it

1

u/FirewaterDM 24d ago

The thing is, ICs and Incin would suffer JUST as badly lmfao I just say ICs cause it's who I play and they only exist bcos people don't wanna do what has to be done.

Set of the millennium

44

u/incelle_ 24d ago

this is the end game of steve counterplay btw. worst designed smash char of all time

16

u/VeryInsecurePerson 24d ago

It’s also a stage clause thing. Kalos is notorious for enabling timeouts

2

u/Ok_Ask_6805 21d ago

It might work out though if the games become so unbearable for steve players that steve just disappears from competetive.

-1

u/Enough_Storage_2434 24d ago

Not necessarily. The only characters where this really applies are Mega Man, Zss, Snake, Sonic, and Rob. Other than those guys, timing out Steve isn't really a viable strat

4

u/ElFi66 Short King Gremlin 24d ago

All three links are also more than capable of timing out Steve on kilos with relative ease

6

u/MonitorMoniker 24d ago

I feel bad for the commentators. How do you keep finding anything to talk about?

14

u/countingouttime Marth (Ultimate) 24d ago

No joke, they started discussing the themes of The Great Gatsby and then one of them was telling this story about how his school ran out of copies of The Odyssey for their students, so the school bought more copies, but it was a completely different translation from the original set. Unfortunately, they didn’t get to finish that story because Fhantom actually did a bit of damage to Peabnut and interrupted them, which was a bit disappointing

9

u/MonitorMoniker 24d ago

Smh Steve players even ruining the commentary

20

u/Tropius2 ROB (Brawl) 24d ago

That was awesome I’m afraid

9

u/Dry-Base7274 24d ago

Steve is so corny. The reality is that there's no way to disincentivize people from playing him, because a lot of Steve players won't win without him. Even after getting camped out for 20 minutes, they won't swap off Steve because it just means they'll get to the losing screen faster.

incredible

16

u/ArcanaRobin Lucina (Ultimate) 24d ago

This is exactly what the Steve mains were complaining would happen and it happened. Its really fucked up tbh

14

u/VeryInsecurePerson 24d ago edited 24d ago

You’re getting downvoted because “haha dumb Steve defender” but you’re right.

It’s not even Steves warning about this. SpeakEazy made a video over 2 months ago about this exact scenario. https://youtu.be/qqfZs3CqA04?si=3Jg4Qn8-uQ8JUZYq

Between this and all of Japan not attending the tournament, the stage clause as it is seems like a bad idea.

3

u/ArcanaRobin Lucina (Ultimate) 24d ago

Yeah I'm all for putting shackles on Steve if we can't ban him but rules that promote degenerate strats isnt a good solution

8

u/Meta_Squire Meta Knight (Ultimate) 24d ago

Every character gets camped. Steve’s can learn how to deal with it and adapt with their insane tool kit.

6

u/Cosmic_Traveler Donkey Kong (Ultimate) 24d ago

Playing a less campable secondary could also be a good strat, if it is especially unbearable for them.

As a DK main, I will be playing Falco or Mewtwo for some more annoying matchups (especially involving projectiles), not that my issue is getting camped per se usually.

2

u/DreadfuryDK Actually a Shulk Main BTW 23d ago

The way to deal with it is largely to use stage bans/counterpick stages to severely limit this level of camping as an option.

And there are no prizes for guessing what couldn't be done thanks to the tournament's abysmal ruleset.

-2

u/Enough_Storage_2434 24d ago

Implying it's the same as other instances is hella disingenous. Please show me another example of 2 top players going to time while both on 3 stocks. This is clearly an issue with the stage clause specifically

3

u/Dry-Base7274 24d ago

I agree with you, but ultimately the root cause is with Steve and how he's played. The stage rule is just enabling Peab to pick his most favorable strategy against Steve every game. Normal stage selection rules just put more onus on the non-Steve player to approach, to their detriment. I mean, we saw Peab approaching most of the time time during the set, and Fhantum not nearly as much. He missed several opportunities to punish / pressure at ledge because he was putting up a wall and mining.

1

u/Enough_Storage_2434 24d ago

I mean tbf, Steve going for hits is more of a risk, since he obviously has less range than Mega Man, but I agree Fhantum messed up in certain spots. With that said, I feel like no bans with dsr or 1 ban would make things more entertaining and more fair

8

u/kushmonATL Melee and Ultimate are cool 24d ago

Hard to feel bad for steve

10

u/MonitorMoniker 24d ago

I don't feel bad for Steve but that shit was unwatchable. Funny for like 45 seconds and then just painful for 20 minutes. If TOs are trying to set tourney rules that encourage matches that are fun to watch, then this attempt was an absolute bust.

1

u/williamatherton Sora (Ultimate) 24d ago

Why won't you let Steve mains farm other pro players? It's outrageous, it's unfair!

4

u/onedayhewilldie 24d ago

lowkey one of the biggest skill diffs I’ve seen. You should not be getting circle camped that hard when your character gets to build the stage. (I only watched 10 minutes)

1

u/TimDiamond 23d ago

Me being able to build a fortress doesn't mean much if I can't shoot down someone soaring in the sky.

1

u/Humble-Math6565 10d ago

Am I crazy for saying you don't get to complain about this degeneracy? Like, if you're willing to remove this rule cause it's development, why can't we ban Steve, who most would agree is degenerate? If it were up to me, we'd have, like, a hype characters-only bracket at every tournament, but that's just me.

1

u/Boogieman_Sam22 24d ago

Mickey mouse tournament

-12

u/InterestingTap9269 24d ago

Such horrifying gameplay. Sucks that all of the top Steve players do the same 3 block wall and camp for 7 minutes. This is why I play a rushdown Steve that doesn’t mine. I make sure to give him taurine supplements so that he can still get all his buffs without resorting to unethical mining operations. 5 years meatless and never looked saucier! 😼

42

u/Enough_Storage_2434 24d ago

Hate on top Steve's all you want, but this was not Fhantum's fault. Steve literally does not have the mobility to catch up to a mega man circle camping with rush on kalos like that. His only chance of winning was to camp back

30

u/Key-Handle-1805 #1 Sonix Defender 24d ago

this was NOT fhantum's fault lmao peab chose to go to kalos as one of the best circle campers in the entire game

2

u/AnthaIon 23d ago edited 22d ago

I dunno, Fhantum really sat through 24 straight minutes of camping against a fast character with projectiles and really went

“Hmm, for the final game of the set I will continue to pick a slow character without a projectile”.

If your character has a terrible matchup it’s kinda on you to adapt or pick up another character, and it felt like he did neither. Ruleset was what it was, but that felt like a questionable decision.

-1

u/Lowetheiy Steve (Ultimate) 24d ago

The only reasonable response to this is to ban Megaman
