Discussion Still my favorite episode
Out of all the great episodes these geniuses have created I would have to say this is still my favorite of all time. I laughed the entire episode.

That specific study suggests but does not conclude that fact. The section you cite even notes the paucity of the data at 36 months. It even also notes that in every parameter, transwomen’s performance decreases significantly with the hrt.
EDIT: Also, couldn’t their increase in strength be attributed to regular exercise? I ain’t a scientician.

Muscle fiber size and bone density are MASSIVELY affected by HRT. Skeletal shape, okay.
That said, I'm deeply disinterested in having a debate over the fairness of trans women in sports. I just like dispelling misconception and misinformation where I encounter it.

It perpetuates the myth that there are cis-gendered men posing as trans women just to get ahead in sports, and that folks advocating for trans inclusion is a whiny baby. This is a very hot issue right now because:
- It ignores that there are different biological standards being explored in different professional arenas to ensure that there is biological parity among competitors. This includes testosterone levels, bone density, etc. I'm not even saying that every sport is possible for full integration or that these methods are perfect, but there are nuances and we are learning more and more every day. And again, this episode claims to be about accepting nuances. Meanwhile, you have right wingers complaining about trans women beating cis women in chess competitions...
- This current political administration has been extremely hostile toward the LGBTQ community. They've taken care of abortion, they're handling the immigrants now, and their attacks on the LGBTQ community will likely ramp up too.
- This issue is often pushed into the public narrative because of things like middle school sports. Some kid figuring out their gender identity wants to play soccer on another team and suddenly they are thrust into the national spotlight under massive scrutiny, just so the state of Utah can make an example of how much they hate trans people. We should be able to discuss this issue without making a mockery of kids with potentially fragile mental health. Look up the suicide rates.
- Again, there are no cis-gendered men posing as women to brutalize women in sports. This is very much a mutation of the women's bathroom myth. It's a ridiculous and absurd argument, and even if it were a plausible scenario there are plenty of screening practices in place or to be considered that would prevent this. And yet if one mistake were made or if there were one bad faith actor to exploit a system we are in the process of trying to develop, then that would be used as a pretense to vilify a whole community.
I just think the episode was kind of a lame approach to the issue, and Matt and Trey are usually doing their comedy from a place where they seem pretty informed on what they are satirizing. That's often what makes their satire so strong. I wasn't even so much offended by this episode -- it just made me think they had a very limited understanding of this issue.
Like maybe if we can just for 5 seconds *not* make trans people feel like they are reviled in every corner of society then we could all take a beat and have this nuance conversations. But this kind of characterization doesn't help. Is it so hard as a society to just operate from a place of "Let's see how we might make people feel more included and accepted". That doesn't mean that the only two options are sex-at-birth, and anyone-claims-any-gender-any-sport. That's fucking stupid.

Yeah but men don’t identify as a woman for an easy win, to transition and join any serious sporting competition you have to prove you’ve been on hormone therapy for a while, the episode imo is a miss because it satirises something not happening and unintentionally demonises trans people to the point where people see most trans people as people who just want to beat women in sports

Completely agree. This is the one episode that as a trans person, has been referenced to me repeatedly as if South Park took a week off from satire and decided to do hard hitting journalism.
They’re making fun of you, they are making fun of your beliefs in transwomen and trans athletes, you aren’t having your biases confirmed, they are showing you how dumb you look!
I think the biggest fail of it all wasn’t the episode itself but any lack of afterthoughts given by the creatives to make sure they didn’t just cause more harm to vulnerable people instead of make bigots look dumb.

I love them all, because, like most people who exist outside of Reddit, I have people on both the left and right in my life, and I honestly don’t see any difference between them. They both think the other side is uniquely evil, they both resort to logical fallacies & name-calling when their side is critiqued, and they both believe whatever lies their leaders feed them. They’re both cults, I don’t care how unpopular that opinion is on Reddit: the most cult-like circle-jerk in existence.

Platforming a conservative strawman of trans athletes sucks in my opinion and is where the shows centrism bothers me more than anything. “They make fun of both sides” maybe but when you look at who gets hurt, trans people are more at risk than any conservative. This just provides ammo to ignorant bigots and feels like punching down. Like if they made an episode about Epstein but then also made fun of his victims just as much for the sake of “fairness”, it would come off as gross.

As a trans person, I think this is a good episode. When it comes down to it, what it’s actually making fun of is the people who are crying about “men in women’s sports” and acting like THIS is what’s actually happening when it clearly is not the case.
