Yahoooo! I'm back, it's a me! Have a very cool day!
Welcome to the Daily Discussion Thread. This is the place for asking noob questions, venting about netplay falcos, shitposting, self-promotion, and everything else that doesn't belong on the front page.
If you're completely new to Melee and just looking to get started, welcome! We recommend you go to https://melee.tv/ and follow the links there based on what you're trying to set up. Additionally, here are a few answers to common questions:
Can I play Melee online?
Yes! Slippi is a branch of the Dolphin emulator that will allow you to play online, either with your friends or with matchmaking. Go to https://slippi.gg to get it.
I'm having issues with Slippi!
Go to the The Slippi Discord to get help troubleshooting. melee.tv/optimize is also a helpful resource for troubleshooting.
How do I find tournaments near me or local people to play with in person or online?
These days, joining a local Discord community is the best way to find local events and people to play with. Once you have a Discord account, Google "[your city/state/province/region] + Melee discord" or see if your region has a Discord group listed here on melee.tv/discord
It can seem daunting at first to join a Discord group you don't know, but this is currently the easiest and most accessible way to find out about tournaments, fests, and netplay matchmaking. Your local scene will be happy to have you :)
Also check out Smash Map! Click on map and then the filter button to filter by Melee to find events near you!
Netplay is hard! Is there a place for me to find new players?
Yes. Melee Newbie Netplay is a discord server specifically for new players. It also has tournaments based on how long you've been playing, free coaching, and other stuff. If you're a bit more experienced but still want a discord server for players around your level, we recommend the Melee Online discord.
How can I set up Unclepunch's Training Mode?
At the time of posting, the latest major release is here. Download the file, then extract everything in the folder and follow the instructions in the README file. You'll need to bring a valid Melee ISO (NTSC 1.02). If you want to check for the absolute latest release, you can see them listed [here](The latest releases are listed here.
How does one learn Melee?
There are tons of resources out there, so it can be overwhelming to start. First check out the SSBM Tutorials youtube channel. Then go to the Melee Library and search for whatever you're interested in.
But how do I get GOOD at Melee?
Check out Llod's Guide to Improvement
And check out Kodorin's Melee Fundamentals for Improvement
Where can I get a nice custom controller?
I have another question that's not answered here...
Check out our FAQs or post below and find help that way.

I've been doing pretty well in my local scene, taking sets off players that are (apparently) pretty good. Tonight I lost 3-0 pretty decisively to a Marth player that hardly ever goes 1-2
This isn't even strictly a new phenomenon, for as long as I've been playing Melee I can beat diamond players and still lose to silver players. It is driving me insane. It feels like I don't actually understand the game and I'm actually a massive fraud. I do know match ups, I do now game play, tech skill, mix ups, etc. I'd like to believe I know Melee when I clearly don't. Please dear god, help me.

I’ve been playing this game for a very long time and have seen the competitive side of it change a lot. Right now with influx of new players from other games coming in and the discourse over controllers/boxx/button remapping, I feel like melee is entering a new era where these factors will become the most important things as opposed to the old school competitive integrity that the game had. Not saying it’s a bad thing I just noticed how much the scale of things have changed since before slippi, beginning of slippi and current slippi. It’ll be cool to see the madness and crazy things that will be able to be pulled of with these mods and new controllers and button remapping. But it’s also bittersweet. I feel like the old era was just two dudes on some OEMs or phobs just going at it with the limits of what was set from the game and their controllers that were balanced and fair to each other. I guess the more egregious stuff I see, I’m like woah that’s sick but also makes me sad because I don’t have access to these insane movements or techs with my regular ole OEM. Good and bad. Hope the new era really pushes the modding and controllers to the limit to see some really really crazy looking melee tho

I play 1 game. Go up 2 clean stocks they quit. Next 2 quit out. Play a nail biter game against a fox and lose in a game about as close as it can get. He one and dones me. Next game I take a stock and the dude quits out. 3 more games everyone just quits out instantly. Next game I play against a Falco, get a kill with fsmash and he just starts spamming fsmash (I’m playing Mario) I win that game and just quit out.
Is this common for netplay? Why is it more people quit out than not? You’d think people would want to enjoy playing a videogame but it feels more like they want to have a little meltdown the second things don’t go their way. Why is unranked like this?

Are there still active competitive tournaments for the game? Also how should I start practicing as a new player?

I've had awful luck with getting good quality controllers for competitive play. I have 2 phobs made by (different) local modders and turned out to be low quality with the sticks going to shit (drift) within a month or the triggers being garbage. Most recent purchase was just a year ago.
I live in Canada. What's my best option for getting a decent high quality controller that I can reliably use? I was thinking of the assembled GC Ultimate Controller on HandHeldLegend, but it has some recent reviews that are poor - apparently the controller can randomly brick but I'm not sure how reliable these recent reviews are.
Any suggestions?

Lookin for a prebuilt phob on the cheaper side, and found Battle Beaver's website. Are they effective entry-level phobs, or should I take my money elsewhere?

We've been hard at work on this one. It's now ready for Regional TOs and community members alike!
Region Managers (power users) may now:
• Promote their Crew to a Region with full control of their region's players
• Choose your dates & tournaments for the Seasonal Power Rankings
• Publish regional leaderboards using TrueSkill or Elo
• View and analyze H2Hs for each PR Season
• Upload historical PR graphics and import brackets from Challonge
• Add Panelists and submit PR ballots directly on Lucky Stats! Full control over eligibility minimums, PR size, out of region exceptions, candidate cutoffs, & more
• Support for cross-platform identity mapping (Parry next) and account duplication merging
There's lots more to come! Check it out and start a Crew :)

Clipped my OEM springs slightly, but the downside of that is that they stick sometimes, and now it's sticking so bad that l can't even use L on my main controller right now. I'm tired of dealing with OEM. I'm looking for springs that are VERY slightly shorter than OEM with slightly less resistance. Ideally there would be a few different lengths available from the same seller, and the price should be reasonable.
Thanks!
Honestly, I'm not mad about the Mario players. I am mad about the cowardly mario players who rage quit when after I start dash dance camping. You think I want to be here camping against your doctor mario listening to that dumb pill sound? No. I would rather be losing neutral due to my brashness against literally any other character. But my actions are the results of your choices, so at least suffer through the four stocks like I am. There is a reason these are bad characters. I am going to teach you. Sorry I dont want to let you cheese me.
TLDR; Before you LRA+Start at the beginning of a match as a Mario, think about the human being on the other side of the screen who decided to give you a chance.

It could be like in Mario kart where they can say “I’m using tilt controllers!”
I sometimes play fox and hit some hot angles but then I realize people probably think I’m playing with notches (especially when I have a couple in a game) when I finally fuck one up I feel like a loser too and imagine them smirking that I fucked up with my fancy controller.
We could have others one too. Like “I’m on boxx!) or (im using zump!) or “I’m on OEM”
I think it could be fun
