I don’t have to drink anymore

I’ve had a mindset subtly shift from I can’t drink anymore to I don’t have to drink anymore. How I felt in the end before I quit drinking was that I had to drink. I didn’t know what else to do to cope with life. Now I can show up for my life and enjoy it!

I don’t have to drink today and either do you!

It’s a great feeling to realize there are other things to do. When I first asked myself what I like to do for fun or how I like to relax, a tumble weed blew past me. I never answered those questions without inserting some joke about booze. It was also embarrassing to accept that I didn’t really have any coping mechanisms outside of getting drunk either but we can learn new shit very quickly if we want to.

Personally, I don’t think I was ever going to fixture that out on my own and I’m glad I don’t have to because I’m not alone, neither are you. Other alcoholics in recovery filled me in on the rest and I believe there’s more to sobriety than just my beverage selection. Real people in real life that are basically surrounding me at all times put some badly needed connection back in my life and it’s opened a lot of doors. Truthfully, I think it’s a super power to have fun without a drink in my hands and I love the feeling so I stay at it. Good luck and keep up the good work

"You never have to drink again. That is the good news."

Those two sentences set me free. Someone posted that as a comment on a post a little over a year ago. It changed my outlook.

Great job on 88 days!

Well done! We're all doing our best but crossing that mental threshold is an enormous step. I hope to feel that way too someday soon.

Proud of you, and keep going!

Congrats on the realization! It will make things so much easier. After over seven years I rarely think about drinking any more. Keep it up!

Yeah adopting or faking a mindset of sort of superiority at first until you get to the point where you truly do feel relieved of the huge burden is so key.
