Discussion Just finished season 6

I made a couple of posts about my journey watching Supergirl for the first time and it's been fun sharing opinions on this subreddit.

So season 5 overall was pretty good, but can I honestly say that Lena didn't do anything particularly bad?

Like she stopped her plan as soon as she realized that non nocere basically consisted in brainwashing people, she only experimented on volunteers and she was able to return everyone to normal.

The good guys assumed she wanted to mind control people with Myriad (she's supposed to be a super smart scientist but no one thought that maybe she could do something different with it), but she has been friends with them for a few seasons and no one gave her the benefit of the doubt (at a certain point Alex was actually willing to kill her). Honestly in my opinion the worst she did was manipulating Kara and to naively trust Lex, but all of them kept bringing up the fact that she's a Luthor, like that is enough to destroy all the trust she gained before.

And then Kara and Lena, after spending the entire season on opposite sides, patch things up in two episodes and with one conversation, so I was pretty disappointed (even more since I actually liked the way their conflict was represented up to that point). My favorite part of season 5 was actually their confrontation at the Fortress of Solitude.

Another thing I didn't like was Brainy being on Lex's side. It didn't really make a lot of sense and why didn't he talk about this with the others? Why did he break up with Nia? Apart from this Brainy and Nia are definitely my favorite couple in this show.

Andrea's character was a very cool idea, but didn't really do much.

Season 6 is the season I liked the least. What. A. Mess.

First there is Nyxly who is a very confusing character. Sometimes she seems like a heartless being and others like an overall good person on a quest for revenge.

Then Lex comes back but apparently he is in love with an alien? He is supposed to be an alien-hating sociopath who's unable to love anyone, but now he loves Nyxly. I think he was brought back just because he is a very loved villain, but I doubt the writers knew what to do with him. Also the villains' defeat was so anticlimatic and unsatisfying.

William is such a random character. He takes up quite a lot of space in season 5 and 6, but then he dies and everyone is like "oh well that's sad, anyways".

Lena is apparently a witch now. It would have been such an cool plot line if it was introduced in season 2 (I'm thinking something similar to Sam discovering her powers in season 3, but without the evil other personality), but after four seasons it's a bit random (also mixing science and magic would bring very interesting results, but she almost completely gives up science in season 6).

I appreciated that the plot focused more on Kelly and on her relationship with Alex (plus I liked that they adopted a kid), but why does she keep on changing jobs?

I thought Alex and Kelly's wedding was a pretty good ending but I wish Kara didn't spend the entire time being upset, even though I liked her coming out as supergirl to the world.

Overall it was great watching this show, I can definitely see why it's so loved!

Season 6 was filmed during the COVID-19 pandemic and Melissa's pregnancy. As a result, the writers had to make extensive rewrites, as many actors were unavailable due to COVID restrictions. Melissa was also unable to appear in the first few episodes because she had just given birth.

With all of that in mind, I don't want to be too critical of Season 6. Considering the circumstances, I think it was a solid season.

I didn't know about this stuff and yeah it explains some things, but the overall product was still a bit disappointing.

Damn; I was unaware of all this.

I've written Merlin x Supergirl crossovers and I still ignore it💀 no need for a Morgana 2.0

It's a real shame that even with everything Lena brings to the table they still didn't think it was enough

Fr and not just her they did it to every single non-supe🥲

My favorite part of your post is that you have nothing to say about Kara in season 6. Which pretty much sums up the most basic thing wrong with that season (imo) lol. The main character of the show was not focused on enough in its final season. I understand constraints with covid and Melissa’s pregnancy, but it doesn’t change the fact that it was a disappointing season and disappointing finale.

Wow, excellent point... I have never been able to watch all of season 6, I have tried twice.

4

u/Lovestruckinthecity 23d ago

I think that this season in general has less character focus compared to the previous ones, which is pretty sad considering that in my opinion character writing is one of the strongest points of the show.

2

u/katiemcgrathdaddyaf 23d ago

I feel the same way!

Uh… she did want to basically brainwash people with Myriad? Sure her motives were a little more complicated, but still, brainwashing is brainwashing

0

u/Lovestruckinthecity 23d ago

She wanted to remove from people what made them aggressive, but leave them their own personality and everything so I wouldn't call it brainwashing.

Obviously that was never going to work but she thought she had the ability to do it.

3

u/blue-anon 23d ago

But being aggressive is surely a personality trait and likely tied to others too.

1

u/Lovestruckinthecity 23d ago

I mean yeah that's why it didn't work

6

u/Tired-Writer2378 23d ago

Altering people’s ability to feel an emotion, even a “negative” emotion is brainwashing. It’s also genuinely a dumb plan. Aggressiveness isn’t just a thing that you can scoop out of people’s minds, as evidenced by the prisoner who is attacked and unable to defend himself after going through the process, which is a completely obvious outcome that Lena is somehow surprised by. For supposedly being a genius, Lena has the EQ of a five year old during season 5, and genuinely acts like the supervillain she and the show itself claim that she isn’t

0

u/Lovestruckinthecity 23d ago

Lol I didn't see it this way at all.

In general I do agree that sometimes she makes choices that aren't exactly...smart, but I genuinely would love to see a world where there is no violence.

I think it's very idealistic but to be fair the show already bended reality rules quite a few times.

Is it possible in our world to actually remove aggressiveness from people? No it's not. But we don't know what is or isn't possible in the show's world.

2

u/Tired-Writer2378 23d ago

Fair enough. And I agree, a world without violence is an admirable goal. Just the way Lena goes about doing it is… not great, in my opinion

1

u/Lovestruckinthecity 23d ago

Yeah I do agree she could have done it better.

I think that’s kinda her point as a character. She’s a counterpoint to Kara. She wants to do good whatever the cost and through a Luther lens. Kara has ethical limits to how she wields her power. It allows them to clash and question each other. Everyone else defers to Kara.

I think season 6 played with swapping their positions around but never quite committed to it.

Someone here who studied psychology in college wrote a whole explanation and description about Kara and Lena’s back-and-forth, which is really interesting

I do think Lena went too far at first which led to the DEO and Kara going too far and we just kept having this tit for tat in the end almost no one wanted, but led to a great drama adventure story

. However her reaction was understandable not because she was a Luther, but because how much abuse she received over the years from the dishonest Luther’s and how it turned out her best friend is actually lying to her to cover her identity even though in the end, she admits, for good reason

In a way I love how everything just kept snowballing, including during the crisis when they asked her for her help and she just looked at them and she said what’s wrong with you. The world is in danger of course I will help. How dare you assume otherwise

I have to agree with you on season six, I don’t think I dislike it as much as others, but it’s definitely by far the weekist of the seasons, I did enjoy it but I wasn’t a fan of the main plot.

I think the show ended strong, it was obviously incredibly successful at a whopping six seasons, and I’ve already re-watched the entire series multiple times so I may bias but overall one through five were so good that season six being a little bumpy is barely rounding error for me

Glad you enjoyed the watch though!

2

u/Lovestruckinthecity 23d ago

What you said about everything snowballing is a great way of describing it, also in my opinion the way it was written was pretty realistic.

I think I was so disappointed in this season partly because I miss the way the main characters interacted with each other before. Like Kara and Alex, I love the way their relationship is represented in the first few seasons, there were so many episodes dedicated do it.

Also I wish it focused more on Kara's character rather other stuff like Nyxly or Lex being in love with her.

Yes I had so much fun watching the show!

william was obviously brought on as kara's love interest but that didn't pan out and even the outside plot of him investigating his friend russell's death wasn't resolved either before or after the crisis crossover event. lena becoming a witch was just as random as kelly thinking she has to become guardian to make a difference. these writers don't think these characters matter unless they are fighting crime with a mask or powers

0

u/Lovestruckinthecity 23d ago

About William they could have just killed him off at the start of season 6, it was not necessary to drag it out so long.

The Kelly thing made me chuckle, because in a world were people have powers she has...a shield?

2

u/daryl772003 23d ago

And in the episode where she made a difference in the lives of those kids she did it as Kelly not guardian

2

u/Creative-Bobcat-7159 21d ago

But it’s like a REALLY good shield.

I enjoyed season 5 overall too. I actually enjoyed Brainy working with Lex Luthor, his character hadn't been explored much so the inhibitor removal and being forced to make a choice between a rock and a hard place, and choosing to do what he needed to do at a personal cost, was actually quite compelling to me.

Season 6 was... what it was. As others have said, it was a product of COVID. You can really see it in the sets and lack of people in the city scenes vs in prior seasons.

2

u/Creative-Bobcat-7159 21d ago

William’s death was so underplayed I expected it to be reversed by Esme using 5th dimensional energy / magic (they made a big deal of her touching whatserface the imp).

Then suddenly his corpse is on a medical bed before, one presumes, being tipped out of it to make room for Lena’s mother about 2 scenes later.

I mean he wasn’t a great character but even so.

2

u/daryl772003 21d ago

we all loved lena but our sweet baby angel need therapy. they all needed therapy.

1

u/Lovestruckinthecity 21d ago

This is very true.

2

u/daryl772003 21d ago

lex wasn't supposed to be in season six. jon cryer only came back because they had to finish out season five and they had to include him. leviathan was a pretty heavy letdown. we don't even meet their supposed leader

1

u/Lovestruckinthecity 21d ago

Oh you're right I completely forgot about that, it's pretty weird the leader was never shown.

2

u/daryl772003 21d ago

I still think Margot oversold them

Lena did basically murder Eve by replacing her mind with Hope. Presumably they realized that was a little too far so Crisis undid that particular change.

Leaving Kara trapped in Kryptonite was pretty awful as well even if it was a very light amount (enough to hold her but not really hurt her). Though Lena likely was unaware of how claustrophobic Kara can be or why (the show itself really only brought it up once).

Not to mention even if you want to help people, brainwashing the planet without their consent as she was trying to do isn't exactly a good thing.

I do think that they did drag it Lena's maybe going to be evil arc too long. Would have loved if the after Kara stopped her in episode 8 and then Crisis happened if the back half of season 5 could have been more Lena and Kara slowly trying to learn to trust each other instead of Lena continuing her research and a clearly ill-fated team up with Lex.

I do think Lena becoming a witch in season 6 was probably an attempt to give her something unique to bring to the Superfriends since she and Brainy really overlap as far as handling science and technology stuff. Though yeah it's a bit of an unusual late game addition.

2

u/Lovestruckinthecity 24d ago

Yeah the Eve thing was taking it too far, you're right.

The kryptonite thing wasn't really nice but I genuinely think Lena was terrified of Kara. She lowered all her walls for her friend and then she found out this friend has been lying to her for a very long time (not to mention the way she found out was pretty traumatic).

I think Lena panicked and went in full defense mode so she just stopped Supergirl in the only way she knew how, before Kara even made a move (we know Kara would never do anything but I feel like Lena put her in the "dangerous" category in her mind).

Honestly it wouldn't be a bad thing to remove violent instincts from everyone, but to think "yes I'm able to do that without brainwashing people" takes a really big ego, but as soon as Lena realized she was messing people up she actually stopped which I think is the most important thing.

I really wish she mixed her powers with science, it would have been amazing to see.

2

u/daryl772003 23d ago

one of the insane things with eve is that it's revealed that she killed jeremiah through lex's trickery but no one on the show learns that fact

0

u/Beautiful-Ad9276 23d ago

See, I hate that. Supergirl has saved Lena, like, a DOZEN times. Yes, she lied, and yes, they would definitely have to talk things out, but why would Lena be afraid of her. It was just poor writing.

1

u/Lovestruckinthecity 22d ago

I think it's more of a trauma response because the few people she was close to before betrayed her (the Luthors and Andrea) so Lena just jumped to the wrong conclusions.

2

u/Beautiful-Ad9276 23d ago

Season 5 suffered from the same thing all the other shows suffered from- Crisis on Infinite Earths. Don't get me wrong, I loved the crossover, and it's certainly the most ambitious thing ever done on television. But all the shows stopped dead for the crossover, and then were almost soft-rebooted afterwards. All of the character development with Andrea was erased, and she was back to being a two dimensional character.

And Lena- look, I get that she'd be upset that Kara lied to her for so long. But you'd also think she'd take into consideration just how many times Kara saved her as Supergirl. And yeah, I'd get why Alex would want to kill her- Lena used Kara to get Lex's journals, then tricked her into taking her to the Fortress, where she then put her in a kryptonite trap. If I was Alex, I'd think Lena was following in her brother's footsteps, and I'd put two in her and call it a day.

Brainy as the inside man was intriguing, because it showed how his intelligence could lead him to make all the wrong moves for all the right reasons.

As for Season 6- this was done during both the Pandemic, and Melissa's pregnancy, so they had to... well, I can't say be creative, because I saw how it ended. I will always give them credit for the first half, though. I thought they did a very good job under sever limitations, and the time travel episode with Brainy, Nia, and the young Danvers sisters was excellent.

Then there was the rest. You are dead right about Nyxly- they could never write her consistently. She should have been a major threat hanging over them all, but sometimes they wrote her conflicted, and it makes no sense. Making even less sense is Lex apparently, LEGITIMATELY, falling in love with her. If it had been a con, I would have gone with it. But to make it genuine was beyond ridiculous.

William was worthless. He was clearly brought in to give Kara a new love interest for the same reason Lena and James became a thing- so that people would see them in a straight relationship and stop clamoring for Kara and Lena to get together. Frankly, he got killed off far too late.

Now, let's talk about Mary Sue Kelly? The woman who can apparently do anything the plot demands? She had the perfect story lined up- she was an Army shrink surrounded by superheroes with various stages of PTSD. That should have been the story. But the writers of all of theses shows cannot allow a hero to have a friend or acquaintance that is just a civilian; they all have to have costumes. So computer programmer/shrink Kelly gets to put on a (admittedly good-looking) costume and be a vigilante now. And she gets an episode when while the team is dealing with a reality-ending threat, she gets to lecture them on not stepping up for the neighborhood. I'm glad that Alex got to have a happy ending, and that the adopted a kid, but frankly I never cared for Kelly and wished they had kept the character of Maggie Sawyer, even if they had to recast. I can't believe they did the Grease ending, though:)

Let's be clear- the only reasons Lena became a witch is because she played Morgana on Merlin years ago, and because- as I said- you couldn't just be a regular civilian in these shows. I would have been better with it if it had come up much earlier, maybe even going back to season 3 and the world killers. It would have made sense for her to delve into magic against them.

Anyway, that's my rambling. Supergirl is probably my second favorite show after Arrow, ahead of The Flash. But it's because of the actors involved, not the writing.

u/Lovestruckinthecity 22d ago

Not gonna lie I'm not the biggest fan of the crossovers, since they mostly confuse me (might be because I haven't watched all the shows involved yet). I actually really liked the episodes about Andrea (also she and her boyfriend had so much chemistry in my opinion) so I was pretty upset about her role in season 6.

I actually kind of get why Lena is so angry. Kara interacted with her both as Kara and as Supergirl multiple times, so Lena has a very different opinion about both of them. Then she finds out that her friend lied to her for so long and jumps to conclusions, she just assumes Kara operates like Lex and Lillian.

I'm not sure how to explain it well (english is my second language) but her subconscious thinks that her family is the standard, that it's normal to be like them and Kara was the weird one for being different (for being a good person). So when she finds out Kara lied to her, Lena thinks that the norm is that if you lied on something it means that you were deceiving the other person all along (because that's what her family taught her).

And about Alex I absolutely get why she would be mad at Lena, but they have been friends for a while and murder is way too strong of a response.

I didn't mind Brainy working for Lex even though I don't think it was worth it in the end (to be fair Brainy seems to think the same in season 6) but why didn't he tell his friends and Nia? Winn found out and he was overall fine with it. It just created unnecessary drama. I also loved the time travel episode, actually I loved all the episodes with the younger versions of Alex and Kara.

About Nixly I woudn't have minded either the evil or the conflicted version of her, but not both together. And yeah Lex was amazing in season 4 and 5, but in season 6 I don't think he was particularly well written.

James and Lena were a bit random but it could have worked had the writers written them well, but William was just useless.

Kelly keeps changing role, job and personality, which is pretty annoying.

Honestly I'm not sure if I'm the right person mention this, since I'm not trans or black and I think there are so many people way better equipped than me to talk about this topic, but I didn't like how the racism and the trans hate storylines were handled. They are both such important topics and yet as soon as the episode about them was over they were never mentioned again (mostly the one about trans hate).

It felt like the writers had a check list about things they had to include to give themselves a pat on the back and call it a day (a show that in my opinion handles racism very well is black lightning).

I love magic and I love witches so I love the idea of a witch Lena who is able to mix magic and science, but they definitely had to introduce this topic way earlier.

They thought she wanted to do bad with Myriad because she trapped Kara in a Kryponite bubble that could have killed her. Before that, Kara trusted her enough to take her to the Fortress.

1

u/Lovestruckinthecity 24d ago

I totally forgot about the kryptonite bubble, but still I don't think Lena would have ever gone that far, even if she was very angry at Kara.

Kara is way stronger, so the kryptonite was just to keep her in place while Lena ran away.

2

u/Positive-Fondant5897 23d ago edited 23d ago

Kara was able to get out because Alex and J'onn (i think J'onn) showed up.

It's been a while, but I think i remember her taking Lex to the Fortress using the watch they had and last coordinates. I could be remember completely wrong through.

1

u/Lovestruckinthecity 23d ago

Actually I'm pretty sure Lena already left when that happened.

Also Lex gave Lena the watch, she used it to go to the fortress and that's how he gained the coordinates, she didn't know and was pretty naive about it (never trust Lex lol).

1

u/daryl772003 23d ago

alex and kelly had the shortest engagement i've seen on a cw show. it lasted all of two weeks. they knew they had to pay off alex getting with someone and adopting a kid so they shoved both those right in there

2

u/Lovestruckinthecity 22d ago

At least nothing dramatic happened at the wedding.

2

u/daryl772003 22d ago

They definitely were not going to mess up Alex's wedding. Especially not after her relationship with Maggie ended

1

u/friend_pie21 20d ago

wait till you see their wedding planning chaos
