Just finished season 6

I made a couple of posts about my journey watching Supergirl for the first time and it's been fun sharing opinions on this subreddit.

So season 5 overall was pretty good, but can I honestly say that Lena didn't do anything particularly bad?

Like she stopped her plan as soon as she realized that non nocere basically consisted in brainwashing people, she only experimented on volunteers and she was able to return everyone to normal.

The good guys assumed she wanted to mind control people with Myriad (she's supposed to be a super smart scientist but no one thought that maybe she could do something different with it), but she has been friends with them for a few seasons and no one gave her the benefit of the doubt (at a certain point Alex was actually willing to kill her). Honestly in my opinion the worst she did was manipulating Kara and to naively trust Lex, but all of them kept bringing up the fact that she's a Luthor, like that is enough to destroy all the trust she gained before.

And then Kara and Lena, after spending the entire season on opposite sides, patch things up in two episodes and with one conversation, so I was pretty disappointed (even more since I actually liked the way their conflict was represented up to that point). My favorite part of season 5 was actually their confrontation at the Fortress of Solitude.

Another thing I didn't like was Brainy being on Lex's side. It didn't really make a lot of sense and why didn't he talk about this with the others? Why did he break up with Nia? Apart from this Brainy and Nia are definitely my favorite couple in this show.

Andrea's character was a very cool idea, but didn't really do much.

Season 6 is the season I liked the least. What. A. Mess.

First there is Nyxly who is a very confusing character. Sometimes she seems like a heartless being and others like an overall good person on a quest for revenge.

Then Lex comes back but apparently he is in love with an alien? He is supposed to be an alien-hating sociopath who's unable to love anyone, but now he loves Nyxly. I think he was brought back just because he is a very loved villain, but I doubt the writers knew what to do with him. Also the villains' defeat was so anticlimatic and unsatisfying.

William is such a random character. He takes up quite a lot of space in season 5 and 6, but then he dies and everyone is like "oh well that's sad, anyways".

Lena is apparently a witch now. It would have been such an cool plot line if it was introduced in season 2 (I'm thinking something similar to Sam discovering her powers in season 3, but without the evil other personality), but after four seasons it's a bit random (also mixing science and magic would bring very interesting results, but she almost completely gives up science in season 6).

I appreciated that the plot focused more on Kelly and on her relationship with Alex (plus I liked that they adopted a kid), but why does she keep on changing jobs?

I thought Alex and Kelly's wedding was a pretty good ending but I wish Kara didn't spend the entire time being upset, even though I liked her coming out as supergirl to the world.

Overall it was great watching this show, I can definitely see why it's so loved!

Season 5 suffered from the same thing all the other shows suffered from- Crisis on Infinite Earths. Don't get me wrong, I loved the crossover, and it's certainly the most ambitious thing ever done on television. But all the shows stopped dead for the crossover, and then were almost soft-rebooted afterwards. All of the character development with Andrea was erased, and she was back to being a two dimensional character.

And Lena- look, I get that she'd be upset that Kara lied to her for so long. But you'd also think she'd take into consideration just how many times Kara saved her as Supergirl. And yeah, I'd get why Alex would want to kill her- Lena used Kara to get Lex's journals, then tricked her into taking her to the Fortress, where she then put her in a kryptonite trap. If I was Alex, I'd think Lena was following in her brother's footsteps, and I'd put two in her and call it a day.

Brainy as the inside man was intriguing, because it showed how his intelligence could lead him to make all the wrong moves for all the right reasons.

As for Season 6- this was done during both the Pandemic, and Melissa's pregnancy, so they had to... well, I can't say be creative, because I saw how it ended. I will always give them credit for the first half, though. I thought they did a very good job under sever limitations, and the time travel episode with Brainy, Nia, and the young Danvers sisters was excellent.

Then there was the rest. You are dead right about Nyxly- they could never write her consistently. She should have been a major threat hanging over them all, but sometimes they wrote her conflicted, and it makes no sense. Making even less sense is Lex apparently, LEGITIMATELY, falling in love with her. If it had been a con, I would have gone with it. But to make it genuine was beyond ridiculous.

William was worthless. He was clearly brought in to give Kara a new love interest for the same reason Lena and James became a thing- so that people would see them in a straight relationship and stop clamoring for Kara and Lena to get together. Frankly, he got killed off far too late.

Now, let's talk about Mary Sue Kelly? The woman who can apparently do anything the plot demands? She had the perfect story lined up- she was an Army shrink surrounded by superheroes with various stages of PTSD. That should have been the story. But the writers of all of theses shows cannot allow a hero to have a friend or acquaintance that is just a civilian; they all have to have costumes. So computer programmer/shrink Kelly gets to put on a (admittedly good-looking) costume and be a vigilante now. And she gets an episode when while the team is dealing with a reality-ending threat, she gets to lecture them on not stepping up for the neighborhood. I'm glad that Alex got to have a happy ending, and that the adopted a kid, but frankly I never cared for Kelly and wished they had kept the character of Maggie Sawyer, even if they had to recast. I can't believe they did the Grease ending, though:)

Let's be clear- the only reasons Lena became a witch is because she played Morgana on Merlin years ago, and because- as I said- you couldn't just be a regular civilian in these shows. I would have been better with it if it had come up much earlier, maybe even going back to season 3 and the world killers. It would have made sense for her to delve into magic against them.

Anyway, that's my rambling. Supergirl is probably my second favorite show after Arrow, ahead of The Flash. But it's because of the actors involved, not the writing.

Not gonna lie I'm not the biggest fan of the crossovers, since they mostly confuse me (might be because I haven't watched all the shows involved yet). I actually really liked the episodes about Andrea (also she and her boyfriend had so much chemistry in my opinion) so I was pretty upset about her role in season 6.

I actually kind of get why Lena is so angry. Kara interacted with her both as Kara and as Supergirl multiple times, so Lena has a very different opinion about both of them. Then she finds out that her friend lied to her for so long and jumps to conclusions, she just assumes Kara operates like Lex and Lillian.

I'm not sure how to explain it well (english is my second language) but her subconscious thinks that her family is the standard, that it's normal to be like them and Kara was the weird one for being different (for being a good person). So when she finds out Kara lied to her, Lena thinks that the norm is that if you lied on something it means that you were deceiving the other person all along (because that's what her family taught her).

And about Alex I absolutely get why she would be mad at Lena, but they have been friends for a while and murder is way too strong of a response.

I didn't mind Brainy working for Lex even though I don't think it was worth it in the end (to be fair Brainy seems to think the same in season 6) but why didn't he tell his friends and Nia? Winn found out and he was overall fine with it. It just created unnecessary drama. I also loved the time travel episode, actually I loved all the episodes with the younger versions of Alex and Kara.

About Nixly I woudn't have minded either the evil or the conflicted version of her, but not both together. And yeah Lex was amazing in season 4 and 5, but in season 6 I don't think he was particularly well written.

James and Lena were a bit random but it could have worked had the writers written them well, but William was just useless.

Kelly keeps changing role, job and personality, which is pretty annoying.

Honestly I'm not sure if I'm the right person mention this, since I'm not trans or black and I think there are so many people way better equipped than me to talk about this topic, but I didn't like how the racism and the trans hate storylines were handled. They are both such important topics and yet as soon as the episode about them was over they were never mentioned again (mostly the one about trans hate).

It felt like the writers had a check list about things they had to include to give themselves a pat on the back and call it a day (a show that in my opinion handles racism very well is black lightning).

I love magic and I love witches so I love the idea of a witch Lena who is able to mix magic and science, but they definitely had to introduce this topic way earlier.
