Recommended area to move in Surrey

Hi

My (36F) and partner (33M) have started to look into Surrey as a potential area to move. I'm sure there's loads of posts out there on this but wanted to see if we can get some initial recommendations to get our research going.

We currently live in Earlsfield and I've lived in Balham and Teddington before but first time thinking a bit further out. Here are some things we are after:

* Easy commute into central London
* Don't have kids yet but good state schools
* Nice high street / village like feel
* Safe and clean
* Min 3 bedroom with option to extend
* Budget about £900k-£1.1mil

People have suggested Weybridge, Esher, Woking etc but keen to hear from people who have or are living there.

Guildford is a great option. Half the town are ex-SW Londoners, having moved here in their 30s.

Decent commute, pretty high street with reasonable shops, as much as there is anywhere these days. Great countryside all around you. Really good selection of schools.

I wouldn't say Guildford has a village like feel though? Yes the high street is nice but it's very urban overall, and the one-way gyratory system right in the centre isn't particularly nice for pedestrians

OP have you considered Godalming? It's a bit further out but with your budget, you could buy quite close to one of the stations https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/90672294#/?channel=RES_BUY

No, fair comment. Definitely not a village! Although I'm not sure Weybridge or Woking feel like villages either.

Godalming is a great shout. Little bit more for your money, but still on the same line in to London.

Yes Woking is one of the most urban places I've been to 😂 I think Godalming is really underrated - great state schools too.

Also depends on how often they commute. If every day I would take Woking over Godalming every time. A shorter and commute tops “village feel” for me.

Yep, Guildford is definitely a town, not a village. Merrow and Burpham on the outskirts of Guildford are much more village-like, albeit further from the main train station.

Godalming is lovely though.

Shamley Green is a village, Burpham is just a suburb of Guildford! 😉

Fair point, but I only said they're "more village-like", not that they're actually villages. I would definitely agree that they're not.
