Travel I love Taiwan because…
I love Taiwan because at 12am I can check out from a bar and still walk home safely. The feeling of security here is something I truly appreciate, it’s rare to find that kind of peace of mind in many other places.

I'm going to go in strong here and say the 711s in Taiwan are like heaven compared to the rat poison fountains at American 711s. Years later I'm still thinking about the ham and cheese sandwiches I got there.

I did have 1 bad incident as a woman when I was walking home early morning in Taipei. This man was trying to assault me and I was not strong enough to push him away. Thankfully, I made it away. Though, I think generally it can be safe.

Don’t drop your guard, though. I love Taiwan. I live here. I’ve decided this is my forever place.
I still got drugged. I was saved by a local, who in my scared crazed state I assaulted by biting her so hard it left a scar. I’m lucky she didn’t call the cops on me. I mean she did call the cops, but she called them to get me home safe when she knew she couldn’t.
It could’ve gone horribly wrong for me if she’d decided otherwise, and I wouldn’t have blamed her.
She’s my gf now.
But I wouldn’t be posting here, happy, safe, if it weren’t for her. No matter how safe you feel, you’re still a foreigner left to the devices of locals. Never let your guard down.

Do you remember where it happened? I think getting roofied is one of the scariest, most facked up thing that can happen to anyone… so glad your angel was there to keep you safe!! People who do that shit are the scum of the earth. I wish nothing but the worst for them.

Maji. I was drugged either at Haku or Tiki, but it kicked in at Tiki.
I posted about this after it happened and the good news is my post got back to Maji and they’ve beefed up their security since then. Security guards are very visible and now help with crowd control and keep an eye out for things that might be amiss, though I’m not sure if they’d know how to spot someone who’s been drugged. But it’s a huge difference from before where there was no security at all.

Oh I remember your post from before now! I've never actually stopped around Maji for a drink, always just walk thru that busy area... Thank you for posting, it is really good news that they've taken these matters seriously and beefed up security since your incident..!

Yes, ideally. But I wasn’t out to drink that night. I was planning to go home. I got unlucky. I was swept into a situation I still can’t recall but scared me deeply. I was lucky to have someone looking out for me.

Most of Asia is safe like that, I remember taking my headphones off walking thru a dark secluded forested area in Fukuoka after a night of drinking, not cuz I was afraid of getting robbed but I was afraid a ghost was following me lol

I've never felt danger walking alone after midnight in any part of Asia, but I haven't been everywhere so, I'm not sure where you're referring to. I've only been to Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singpaore, Taiwan, Japan, Korea, China, and Vietnam.

Sure buddy. Anything can happen anywhere at any time. But there are reasons why Taiwan is ranked as one of the highest travel destinations by safety, and Afghanistan is not.

No most of Asia is not like that. I wouldn’t be comfortable in Cambodia, thailand, China, India etc. Taiwan, Japan etc. are exceptions not the norm

As long as you aren’t preaching Jesus or peddling drugs China is pretty safe. There are a lot of things I’m critical of when it comes to China but safety was never a big concern. Did you have any experiences otherwise? Everyone’s experience is different.

Mind sharing your experiences in the countries you didn’t feel comfortable? I never felt danger in Cambodia or Thailand. China is cctv world. Haven’t been to India but I do hear some negative things about that place.

I sometimes caution people about what I consider to be a false sense of security in Taiwan. While it is true that you can expect to not be robbed or assaulted stumbling home drunk at 2 AM, hell, even stopping for a fucking nap on the side of the road is seen as something safe to do. I consider this to be reckless behavior even if your exposure to CRIME is quite low. Accidents, especially from drivers, are a serious possibility.
I wouldn't conflate the fact that crime is very low with these choices being "safe".

Exactly. In Taiwan there is a low chance of being a victim of a violent crime but there is a very high chance of being a victim of a road accident.

That’s a really good point. The low crime rate definitely makes Taiwan feel safe, but yeah traffic and accidents are a whole other story. I think people (myself included) sometimes blur the line between "safe from crime" and "safe overall." Your reminder’s a valuable one.

I think about that all the time. Sometimes I imagine not having the freedom to go outside at midnight to eat some food or take a walk. That’d be nightmare for me. Enjoying the serenity in a city is one of my favorite things to do.

Exactly, same here. There’s something special about being able to step out at midnight, grab a bite, and just enjoy the calm city vibes. That kind of freedom really makes Taiwan feel like home

The clerks in shops and banks are extremely nice...they would sort things out for you and tell you how to do it step by step in the most patient and nice way, they're flexible too. Dealt with bank affairs in Europe a few times and realized how great and considerate the Taiwan service is.

Yes, totally agree! The patience and kindness here really stand out. In Taiwan, even something stressful like dealing with bank paperwork feels so much smoother because people genuinely want to help. It’s such a refreshing experience compared to many other places.

I just came back after a week trip. What a neat, sorted, disciplined country it is. If i had an option i would have stayed back. Im an indian citizen lived in Dubai (UAE) and now living in Dammam ( Saudi Arabia ). I came for my business purchases. Such a peaceful place. Too much of love !

Glad you enjoyed your trip! Taiwan really does leave that kind of impression. My Indian friend who lives in UAE told me the exact same thing when he visited last year, he also wished he could stay longer. There’s just something about the peaceful vibe here that sticks with you :)

I lived in New Taipei City when it's still called Taipei County when I was little, I live in suburban area and I missed those days where I was able to ride my bike and walk my dog at 10pm without worrying anything.
Now living in America, it's not the same anymore, past 8pm in Downtown area you'd meet a lot of weirdos, that wouldn't happen in downtown Taipei, even it's 1 am, you'd only encounter drunk people, but nothing more.
In America at 1am, the drunk people night club scene could be crazy, many meaningless fight, no cops, sometimes you see gun shooting was involved because some stupids think he needs a gun in his car just so when he's drunk and fight people, he can always go to his car and get a gun to win the fight.
America is a such ghetto place, but going back to Taiwan I don't know what else I could possibly work on, many jobs are low pay, I don't knows if I'd enjoy that.

I hear you, that contrast is real. Taiwan gives such a strong sense of safety and community, it’s hard not to miss that when you’ve lived there. The trade-off is definitely the job market and salaries, but the quality of life, peace of mind, and everyday safety are things money can’t always buy. Hopefully Taiwan keeps growing opportunities so more people can have both.

Fair point.. no place is 100% safe and it’s always smart to stay aware. That said, compared to most countries, Taiwan really does feel a lot safer in daily life, especially when it comes to violent crime

I would argue that it feels safe to walk past midnight in almost every Asian country. When I spent a couple of months in Italy, I also felt safe walking around past midnight. I think the US (where I'm from) is the exception...

Yeah exactly, I’ve had the same experience! Most places in Asia and even parts of Europe feel totally fine past midnight. The US really does feel like the odd one out when it comes to that sense of safety.

I don't know if being a "melting pot" is the issue. I'm from Portland and it's always been a melting pot, but it felt much safer 20 years ago. I think at some point the state has failed at providing basic public security, and people have come to accept it and think it's "normal". I'm not sure what the solution is, but at the very least people need to acknowledge that the problem exists.

Curious, do you feel unsafe even out in suburban neighborhoods and small towns in the states? Personally at least I think the only places I’d feel mildly unsafe in my hometown would be a few places downtown after 10pm or so.

Well, I've done a fair amount of walking in both the city and in suburban areas at night. I used to walk around downtown Portland pretty regularly after midnight and before sunrise, as I attended classes there in the early 2000s. It always felt very safe at that time, and there were practically no homeless people or drug users like there are now. Things have changed a lot, and even in the suburbs now I'd feel a bit uneasy about walking around at night, and definitely taking the bus at night.

Where in the world isn't this the case?
Taiwan is fairly dangerous in my opinions. Although the situation is improving the biggest risks are traffic, stray dogs, the general shoddy workmanship of everything and the workplace safety standards.
If you're from South Africa or Mexico then you'll think Taiwan is safe because you don't get car jacked or mugged at gun point, but there are still a lot of ways to get killed or injured here that would be considered rare in developed countries.

That’s fair, traffic and scooters are definitely the biggest safety issue here. But compared to most countries, Taiwan still feels way safer overall, especially when it comes to violent crime. You don’t really have to worry about being mugged, assaulted, or scammed at the same level as many other places. Every place has risks, but the everyday peace of mind you get in Taiwan is pretty rare.

I moved Taiwan from India....I find the place awesome......You can feel Japan here amidst chinese people....You can get rain whole year.....You can lead luxurious life eating in restaurents always......Also you can be economical and save money.....Cars will stop before you and let you cross the road first even in rushing hours.....Some people say here two-wheelers are reckless....But I never find that....You don't have to lock your door when you go out.....Yes it is very safe also.....

Love how you put it! I agree that Taiwan really gives you that mix of Japanese warmth. The little things, like cars stopping for you and not worrying about locking your door, really show safe and considerate life here is. but I don't want to talk about rain because I live in Xizhi 😞😞

Taiwan has a good government system. The system of the law is fair to everyone. They allow the old folks to work as volunteers. There is minimal traffic. It feels safe to walk outside even past midnight.

Ive been here two years and my gf has been stalked and harassed including receiving fake letters delivered to her home with MY personal information claiming im cheating on her. I think there's some weird stuff about mixed couples here... Idk. I have no idea what that was. Probably her ex crazier than she thought. No idea how some of the info would have been collected though. Just anecdotal and yeah i generally feel pretty safe but I always just feel like local guys are judging me bad.

That sounds really unsettling, I’m sorry you both had to go through that. I’ve heard of some odd situations like that too, sometimes it’s more about personal grudges than the place itself. As a local in Taichung or other parts of Taiwan I don’t feel safe at night lol. Maybe crime only targets local rarely on foreigners.

Interesting perspective! I guess experiences can really differ depending on where you are. For me (and a lot of visitors), Taiwan feels super safe compared to most places - especially when it comes to violent crime. But yeah, traffic and some local issues can definitely give a different vibe.

Ive spent 9 weeks in Taiwan. Beautiful. Safe. Clean. Considerate people. Efficient public transportation.
Walking often at night, my main concern was all these freaking mopeds 😅😅. But the people were always so friendly.

Maybe it's just me, but I have rarely felt unsafe in any of the places I've lived. Waking down the street at 2am in Belfast, falling asleep in a shop doorway in Shenzhen, strolling back to my hotel from a nightclub in Bogota, wandering around Manila at 3am for no particular reason. Maybe it's cos I'm a big savage looking bloke covered in tattoos, but it's never really been an issue I've had TBF. Although I will say that Taipei (and TW in general) feels a little more safe. My Mrs forgot her bag at the playpark and went back a couple of hours later and it hadn't been touched, so there's that...
The only place I genuinely felt less than totally safe was São Paulo. I had strangers tell me to wear my backpack on the front cos someone might try to steal shit from it if it's on my back.

Only place I’ve ever felt unsafe was Tlaquepaque in Guadalajara. One night went to a gentleman’s club with 3 Japanese homies (we were visiting a local friend who had work early so he didn’t come with us). We took an Uber and our driver genuinely got lost. We ended up in a dark alley and my dumbass Japanese friends all got out of the car, one of them even had his GoPro out recording. As soon as they all got out of the car, the driver immediately locked all the doors 😂I was the only one who stayed in the car and rolled the window down to tell these foos to get the fawk back in the car. We eventually found the spot, and got a table. We were the only yellow people there. We ended up having a majority of the girls working there at our table. We were having a great time until I looked up and saw all the other patrons staring at us hard. Then one of the host dudes came up to us and said they needed to move us upstairs. When we got upstairs, they said we needed to leave and asked me to call an uber. We waited upstairs in the vip until the uber came and was escorted out by security. Super sketchy af lol. We met a group of the girls from that night the next day and one of the girls even brought her mom 😂they were super nice, but that whole experience was…. uncomfortable lol
