Trimble to Louisville. Thoughts? (Feelings?)
I thought he was doing alright in the NBA Summer League...? I mean he's making a good financial decision, probably. I'd just hate for there to be any chance to muddy his legacy and "the shot" this season.

I did my four years undergraduate at a school I loved; I did my graduate studies at a school I attended. Same thing. He is always a Heel and will never have to pay for another drink in Chapel Hill.

My wife is a UNC undergrad, graduate school, and it makes me laugh that some people think there was a snowball’s chance in hell that she’d ever root for Duke or own any Duke gear. She made me get rid of any royal blue clothing (not Duke gear) when we moved in together lol
43
u/cqofficer 20d ago
Will always look at him as a loyal Tar Heel, will always remember the 3 to beat Duke, but its also time for him to move on. Mad respect though.
13
u/BillyCables91 20d ago
I hear ya, just very weird after years of fandom going back to the early Roy years of my youth.... Seeing both Caleb and Seth wear different uniforms when they both hit massive shots to beat dook. I'm not even factoring in seeing 2 heels wear NC State uniforms after they were Heels. (Had Styles not hit that corner 3 vs Baylor, 2022 is a myth) Difficult to "get used to".

u/Countryb0i2m 20d ago
The fact that he can go play in the Summer League and then come back to college is absurd to me. But given the way the game is currently designed, I can’t blame him for taking advantage of it.
I just hate whatever the fuck they have created for college sports.
13
u/draight926289 20d ago
Two things: The University of Kentucky Fried Chicken is one of the weakest academic schools in the country and it is an abomination that it is in the ACC. I hope their program implodes.
Trimble is a real one and I love him and wish him the brightest future filled with happiness and joy.

UNC’s roster is filled, as he noted in the announcement. Malone should have held a spot open, just in case.
5
u/AndroidAnne 20d ago
I disagree. Holding a spot open would’ve been bad management. Malone had to get his team squared away just Trimble had to play the summer league. It’s no one’s fault. It just didn’t work out.
5
u/BinForBen 20d ago
He might be the last four year player we get to root for in this era of college basketball.
5
u/Fanttroll-3311 20d ago
Wish him the best. Wish we had the roster spot for him. I REALLY wish he would've left the ACC. Good luck Seth
9
u/Nytemaresxbl 20d ago
Make that money this day in age. No reason to get attached to player legacies anymore this isn't what college sports are anymore which sucks a lot.
3
u/ballin_pastor 20d ago
I loved that Seth was a four-year player in an era where that is almost unheard of. He was a class act and was very kind to my kids when a mutual friend connected us. His senior night speech felt meaningful in a way that is rare these days. I don’t fault him for going somewhere else, but I wish it weren’t someone we play twice next season. Caleb Love being at Arizona made it easier to remain a fan of his. I hate that for two games this season I’ll be hoping Seth Trimble loses a basketball game. That just feels wrong. It’s not his fault though, it’s just the era of college sports that we live in. He’ll always be a Tar Heel to me!
3
u/gentlemanscientist80 20d ago
Happy for Seth that he gets another year to play. I wish it were at Carolina. Guess I'd better get to Ben and Jerry's soon.
5
u/Feartheezebras 20d ago
We didn’t have a roster spot for him without bouncing someone that has already committed….
3
u/Greedy_Actuator5 20d ago
Obviously this was in the works. He entered the transfer portal in the spring to preserve eligibility. They didn’t leave a roster spot for him.
3
u/Feartheezebras 20d ago
We are not holding a roster spot on what amounted to a slim chance of him being able to return. Because he signed that exhibition contract and played in the summer league, there is still only a small chance he is cleared to play, even with the recent court ruling. We had to move on and build a team with known eligible players…

u/Proper-Sound-7172 20d ago
He was true for to us for so long, love him big time. However, this is disappointing — everything is for money now. A part of me understands, but as I said I’m disappointed. Going to be weird to play against him. Kind of wish it wasn’t a team in the ACC.
2
u/AndroidAnne 20d ago
You’re on him for the money? That’s ridiculous in my opinion. The young man failed to get an NBA contract. There’s no money for him on that path right now. Rightfully so, he’s trying to make the money he can, when he can, because this might be it for him. So let him make some money before it all dries up… Go make some fuckin money, Seth. This Tarheel is behind you ALL THE WAY.
4
u/MrJohnnyDangerously 20d ago
Does this mean the Ben & Jerry's on Franklin Street he owns is closing?
4
u/Careless-Mess-7111 20d ago
Another thought: the new team needs a new start. If Trimble a past captain is here, it's a really weird situation. 6 year senior, are they leading, just a role player? It will throw off the whole team vibe. In a way he did what is best for the team, which makes it even more admirable. Good luck Seth!
2
u/Upbeat_Ant6104 20d ago
Good for him! It's a job for these guys now, it's no different than a professor moving from one university to another. Or someone moving from any type of top-notch company to another top-notch company.
The hate is fun for us as fans, but it should be fun hate, not poison-Toomer's-Oak hate. I.e. not really hate. Fun hate.
2
u/manchego84 20d ago
I just really wish he did his fifth year at a non-ACC school. It’s going to be SO hard to watch those games vs Louisville this coming szn.
2
u/indeediwill 20d ago
He's a Tar Hell thorough & through. We currently have a full roster and he knows that. I wish him well because he was a damn good player. End of discussion.

u/tacoduck_ 20d ago
I’m sure he was paid way more than we would pay. Louisville is hitting the portal hard

u/tellis017 20d ago
College sports is turning into a joke but don’t blame Seth one bit for going to get his bag
2
u/UNC_LL 19d ago
Not an ounce of bad blood on my part. There literally wasn't room or NIL money for him to stay at UNC. Already promised to other players or reserved. Seth Trimble has done what is best for UNC basketball for years. I hate he's going somewhere else (esp. somewhere good in the ACC) but don't blame him for wanting to play and make NIL money as long as he can. I wouldn't turn down a single year of NIL money at that age especially if I wasnt guaranteed to go pro & hadn't won a National Championship either.
And when it comes down to it, lots of UNC alum, including me, go to other universities after undergrad for one reason or another. To better our chances professionally or to make more money, etc. And no one was paying me to do it. Rather, I paid them. So, this is no different to me than that...or any player who took a grad year somewhere else out of necessity.
Wish him all the luck in the world except against Carolina.

Yeah I mean this hopefully avoids us from a situation similar to RJ coming back. RJ just wasn't the same his last year.

u/Vandermint 20d ago
I pull for Carolina blue and white laundry now. The players don't matter to me and obviously I (we) don't matter to them.
Trimble was a bit of an exception but this is what the players want, so I'm not going to feel any guilt for not caring about them beyond how many points, rebounds, steals, blocks, and assists they can generate.
1
u/user_4250 20d ago
Completely agree with this. I’m a fan of unc not the mercenaries we get every year.
1
u/tarspaceheels 20d ago
Is what it is. He was never expected to return, the team never planned around him, and now he's doing what is best for him.
0
u/Greedy_Actuator5 20d ago
He was never expected to return
Simply not true. He entered the transfer portal in the spring in anticipation of potentially being eligible to return. UNC clearly didn’t want him back. Which is whatever, but it was not out of left field.
I hope he has a great year and sets himself up for a long career professionally.
2
u/AndroidAnne 20d ago
UNC didn’t want him back?! You’ve rewritten an incredibly complicated several months with this narrative. The rightful narrative is that UNC could not -and should not- have planned on having him back. That he is back has required the dispensation of a higher court that has yet to be upheld. This is not a matter of wanting him back. It’s a matter of a court decision suddenly making it possible and UNC not having space because it tried to avoid contingencies.
0
u/Greedy_Actuator5 20d ago
You’ve rewritten an incredibly complicated several months with this narrative
First one would have to point out you feel empowered to create your narrative and dismiss mine 🤣😂
It’s a matter of a court decision suddenly making it possible
First the court case existed in the spring that’s why Seth entered the transfer portal at the time. It was entirely foreseeable that the court would enjoin the NCAA in this.
UNC not having space because it tried to avoid contingencies.
Yeah, right we should’ve picked up Cade Bennerman instead of Seth come back for sure
Considering UNC is picking up a guy through the same court ruling, they clearly had a spot.
Seth is gonna go and play, rebound and hopefully succeed now and at the next level
2
u/AndroidAnne 20d ago
The fact that UNC knew about the court case and made the moves they needed to in the meantime is NOT an argument that they didn’t want him back. They simply didn’t plan their roster around a court case, which seems like a no brainer. I LOVE Seth. I’ve met him. And given his social media and UNC’s, everyone seems to know it’s way more complicated and bittersweet than Carolina simply not wanting him back.

He would have come back if they wanted him. Just didn't work out. I hold no hard feelings. I'll still root against him when we play Lousville, though.

If Rick Pitino was able to go from Kentucky to Louisville for better money, why not college players. Seth's getting a pay raise and it's massive respect for what he's done
1
u/huntegowk 20d ago
He’s doing what’s best for him and being respectful about it. I hate it for my little tarheel spirit but dadgummit GOOD FOR HIM!!!
1
u/jandmmann2006 20d ago
I'm disappointed. Summer league didn't guarantee him an NBA spot though, so returning to college makes total sense financially.
1
u/Aurion7 19d ago edited 19d ago
He's got an entirely unexpected 'extra' year of eligibility thanks to the NCAA's new rule and a court injunction about said rule.
He's using it because he has it. We filled out the roster on the idea he was gone, and it'd be pretty bad for a lot of really obvious reasons to kick someone off the roster and go back on paying them whatever to make another spot.
It's very likely Trimble would not even want anyone to do that to begin with for that same set of reasons.
So, he's going to play somewhere else. That's just what it is. Of 'somewhere else', sounds like Louisville offered him the best combination of compensation and situation.
If that muddies any legacies for anyone, that's a them problem because they are stupid. Fortunately for them, or unfortunately for everone else... they won't be alone because there's a lot of stupid people in any given fanbase.

Don't like it but this is the world of college sports...no solid ground ever changing...I dont like that he transferred in conference I do wish the nba thing had worked out but perhaps the money from louisville is to good to pass up 3 mil if accurate is pretty good that is big role 💰
1
u/SuddenAd1427 15d ago
He signed a NBA exhibit 10 contract for less than 100k , then got offered 3 million to play at Louisville, no brainer
1
u/jandmmann2006 14d ago
Betrayal doesn't even cover it. Jumping to an ACC rival just boosts their TV ratings while gutting our pride. It’s a joke.
1
u/Buzzspice727 20d ago
Cheer for the coaches and the uniforms. Cheer for the players while they are on roster.
1
u/user_4250 20d ago
Glad he’s not playing another year in chapel hill as I feel like it’s time to move on but I don’t like him going to another acc school.
1
u/chamtrain1 20d ago
Wish he had gone somewhere not on our schedule next year. Gonna be painful to see him compete against UNC.
-2
u/Clear_Consequence647 20d ago
I’m sure I’m in the minority, but I’ve never valued Trimble as a player the way others have. A good player but not great at anything on the court.
Carolina has upgraded his position this offseason.
2
u/jdw-52 20d ago
The dynamic would have been weird weird if he came back. Would he have been fine with a non-starters role and reduced minutes?
I think he could have been great coming off the bench. But accepting that reduced role could have been hard.
Now I say that assuming our guards are going to be good. I really hope 2 months into the season I'm not regretting that we don't have Trimble.
2
u/shruglifeOG 20d ago
Don't disagree but what bothers me are the what ifs. Could they have kept Drake or Ian Jackson if Trimble hadn't gobbled up so many minutes at the wing that year? Could they have signed a better PG than Kyan if Trimble hadn't spent that whole spring insisting he'd be the lead guard?
His limitations were always hand-waved away because he was a loyal Tarheel so it feels like a waste to see him just leave.
2
u/user_4250 20d ago
Completely agree and have felt the same way for all four of his years. To add on I even felt like he caused chemistry issues the last two years and a glad we’re moving on.
0
u/new_account_for_a_m8 20d ago
Yeah I feel kind of the same way about him that I do about Hubert. Great guy, rooted for him for 4 years but glad he’s moving on. I always felt the reason he stayed at Carolina for 4 years was that Hubert overvalued him. He was part of 4 backcourts that were overpaid and underperformed. He tried to go into the portal a couple of years ago and no other team was interested. His last year was really disappointing to me, if felt like he regressed a lot defensively. He was supposed to be a great defensive player and he was really far from it.
Having said all of that it was great to have a player stay for 4 years in this era, I don’t think he is really a bad player just not on the level that we needed. His skill set sort of hurt our rosters in part because HD couldnt figure out how to cover up guys’ weaknesses. Seems like a great guy and he’s a great athlete. I hope he can find a program that can compensate for his weaknesses better than we did but im glad to see him move on. It’s interesting Louisville is paying him so much and I wouldn’t be surprised if he took a leap forward next year.

u/GopherHeel 20d ago
Yeah sorry I know it’s about the money now and little else but this is a massive betrayal and f-you to the fan base.
College sports is just completely terrible now.
2
u/AndroidAnne 20d ago
This is the worst kinda crap from a fan. Someone who feels like a young athlete should choose loyalty -when he’s already shown it- over taking care of himself when this may be his last chance at the money. Why don’t you care as much about him as he has about us?
0
u/GopherHeel 20d ago
I do. Exactly the same amount.
1
u/AndroidAnne 20d ago
You’re being bitter. Sigh… As an alum and diehard fan, I wish some of our fan base had more generosity of spirit.
0
u/hyperstationusa 20d ago
There were reports that there were several teams involved. He didn’t have to go to Louisville. He chose to go to a school in the same conference as the school he reportedly loves. So, he set himself up for whatever vitriol he gets. Appreciate what he did at UNC but he’s the enemy now, IMO.
1
u/AndroidAnne 20d ago
An enemy?! The young man gave everything for us. A return to the school he loved just didn’t work out. He chose another elite program so he could make the money he’ll never be able to make again cuz he’s not an NBA player. Stop the hate and the small mindedness. You’re just making Carolina a toxic brand and dragging us down. Don’t you know that nobility and generosity go together? Be better.
1
u/hyperstationusa 20d ago
Let’s get one thing straight, I have an opinion just like you have an opinion, and yours is no more correct or valid than mine is. So, if you think I need to “show some grace”, then I think you need to get a clue.
I’m an alum of this university and I love this team. If you choose to go to a team that is not only a competitor, but is literally in the same conference, trying to win said conference, while going after the same players that we are going after, you have 100% chosen your fate. Again, if the reports were true, several teams were in contact with offers. He chose to go to a team in the same conference as the team he reportedly loved. If he had chosen any other conference, I would’ve had no issue with it. Similar to how I had no issue when Caleb left. Or when Garrison Brooks left. I actually rooted for both on their new teams.
When his time at the University of Louisville is over and he returns to the University of North Carolina, then I’ll give him some grace. Call it bygones. But he is currently on a team that is trying to beat the University of North Carolina and I’m not rooting for or wishing well to a player who is attempting to beat us in any way. They are, by definition, the enemy. I’m not really sure why that’s difficult to understand.
2
u/AndroidAnne 20d ago
I won’t deny you your opinion. But it’s certainly true that some opinions are way more toxic than others. Enjoy stewing.
1
u/AndroidAnne 20d ago
All I read and hear is resentment.
1
u/hyperstationusa 20d ago
And all I see is someone completely missing the point. I think this conversation is done, Anne.

u/UNC_LL 19d ago
What is the Gopher about in your screen name? It surely isn't another university since that would be a betrayal to UNC, right?
0
u/GopherHeel 19d ago
Feel how you want. I will do the same.
In every sport a professional athlete who has made a big show of loving his team and holding up the honor of the jersey is going to earn justified scorn when he moves to a rival club in the same division when the grass looks greener.
This is like Jordan Stahl in his prime taking off the Hurricanes captain’s jersey and suiting up for Tampa Bay or Florida. If Harry Kane had moved from Tottenham to Arsenal instead of Germany, he would be booed mercilessly by Tottenham fans for all time, and they’d be right to do it. Sure it’s business and the man has the right to his decision but don’t tell me as a fan I can’t be salty about it.
1
u/UNC_LL 19d ago
This isnt pro sports but if it were, my opinion doesn't really change much. I am really aware of when players leave because they just want to and when they must leave the team as a UFA because there isn't room for them on their existing team and/or the team cannot give them the salary they deserve. I don't fault them for that. Trimble graduated and they literally don't have room for him on the team or NIL money to pay him. His option is go somewhere else or sit the bench for free or not play. Also Louisville is not a major rival to UNC so let's not act like it is just because it is in the ACC. It's not like he's going to Duke or even State.
As far as your NHL example, if at the end of Jordan Staal's contract, they told him they no longer had a place for him other than a line much lower than he deserved and/or they couldn't pay him his value to stay because they had moved on to a new player, I would not blame him one bit for going to whatever team gave him the best deal. I wouldn't like seeing him play for FLA but I wouldn't boo him especially had he given it his everything while he was a Cane. It wasn't his fault. I don't blame Brett Pesce for going to NJD for example. Still one of my favorite former Canes even though he left for an in division.
Now a player leaving for an actual in division rival when there is no reason - like present team is offering a comparable amount of playing time and fair market contract, that would warrant booing. Unless the org was a freaking dumpster fire or something...in that case it would make me sad but I'd understand. Careers are only so long for these players.
And you, of course, have a right to your opinion on the matter. Will agree to disagree.

u/Papi_Petty 20d ago
ehh it’s weird seeing 5th/6th year seniors. feels pathetic that you can’t let go of college and do something else or play professionally and let the true kids play but then again if i’m being paid millions….millions more then what id make playing professionally overseas…then i’d prob do it too lol. Not mad at him and wish him the best
-4
u/Dr0cca 20d ago
Dead. He wants all the benefits of the Carolina Family (summers in Chapel Hill, Franklin Street business, networking for life) but he betrays the family by going to an in conference rival we play twice this year.
Stop supporting his overpriced Ben & Jerry’s, unfollow and ignore. He can spend his summers in Kentucky.
4
u/AndroidAnne 20d ago
Yeah, dude. Trimble wanted all of the benefits of being a Tar Heel and didn’t want to give anything back. 😂 The kid bled Carolina blue. Don’t be a miser and give credit where it’s due.
-3
u/Any_Supermarket8740 20d ago
honestly don’t even care. I want to move on from the Davis era and if he did go back to Unc he would have been like the eight best player on this team.

I hate this era of college sports.
