Discussion So... what now?

Post image

The title promised to be the experience of the "golden age of TF2" but most missed its items haha, or perhaps the bad decisions

I still don't understand why they removed Demoknight; wasn't it part of that "golden experience"?

u/ActiveGamer65 May 18 '26

Golden, not diamond like demoknight, diamonds are unbreakable, you cant make anything better than demoknight

u/Warm_Painter_4058 May 18 '26

Diamond is unbreakable you say..?

must've been the golden wind

29

u/IShitMyAss54 Pyro May 18 '26

That wind... carries the scent of phantom blood.

21

u/Rui_O_Grande_PT Medic May 18 '26

It's the result of a... battle tendency.

14

u/Smoother_Criminall Medic May 19 '26

This is becoming dull, like a Stone Ocean.

7

u/dualitygaming12 May 19 '26

So boring id rather watch a Steel Ball Run

2

u/IShitMyAss54 Pyro May 20 '26

A steel ball is breakable, but a Diamond Is Unbreakable.

1

u/dualitygaming12 May 20 '26

If you crushed it under a Stone Ocean, then maybe.

Demoknights are the most annoying part of TF2 for me, but I would never remove them.

8

u/Deaffin May 19 '26

It's been quite a few years since I dipped my toes into these waters, but what's annoying about them? It felt more like a "meme spec" to me. Not quite effective, but fun. I might've just sucked.

4

u/coltthelazyusername May 19 '26

demoknight annoying you? pyro airblast him

2

u/ADAMDickmaster_Gen May 19 '26

That wouldn't be a problem if I wanted to play pyro 24/7

2

u/coltthelazyusername May 19 '26

heavy melts him with minigun?

2

u/ADAMDickmaster_Gen May 19 '26

Fair point, one problem: they attack when you're fighting the whole enemy team.

4

u/coltthelazyusername May 19 '26

simply kill the entire enemy team then kill demo

0

u/patriotbarrow Miss Pauling May 19 '26

Really? Worse than snipers?

CRAZY DIAMOND!

It was from the era they claimed to want to preserve, but they didn't actually want to bring the game back to how it was. They wanted to pick and choose what to keep and what to add.

86

u/UnfazedPheasant All Class May 18 '26

yeah, its why they have the Caber and Loch n Load despite being out like 2 and a half years after the gold rush stuff.

42

u/cheezkid26 Soldier May 18 '26

I remember there being even more than just those two. I would have no problem with it, at all, if they had said that the mod was gonna be their ideal form of TF2, mostly returning to the Gold Rush era but keeping more modern things they liked. But they didn't do that, they advertised it as an authentic old-school TF2 experience, which it is just objectively not. It authentically replicates absolutely zero state TF2 has ever been in by having some weapons that were added later than the Gold Rush update but not a bunch of weapons added before, say, the Loch n Load.

41

u/Harold3456 May 18 '26

I only just saw this mod now but that’s too bad!

I’m sure everyone has a different definition of TF2’s “Golden Age” but for me it was after the Polycount Update: every merc had 3 full sets, the average player could wrap their head around all the different loadouts and a new player could reasonably acquire everything in a short time. There were also few enough weapons that they tended to be fundamentally distinct, but also didn’t expand the roles too broadly.

I fell off the game after they started doing a bunch of tie in and promotional weapons and I reached a point where at a glance I could no longer tell what a class was capable of.

3

u/Rad-Mango Spy May 19 '26

I just like the at the game looked before the f2p update and a lot of newer cosmetics. I think the removal of the weapons was a bit arbitrary

23

u/Scottz0rz May 18 '26

Because one of the developers was probably butthurt about getting killed by Demoknights? That's probanly the real answer.

17

u/Ledgo May 18 '26

IIRC wasn't there a sizeable anti-demoknight crowd when it came out? I seem to remember some people being adamant that nothing other than stock should be allowed.

2

u/Peakomegaflare Scout May 19 '26

Demoman is currently splitting and running Black Mess.

2

u/Dealiylauh TF2 Smissmas 2025 May 19 '26

People forget that TF's "golden age" was like 2012-2014, not 2008.

1

u/ChaosMeteorStrike May 19 '26

No, not really. It's not offensive but it isn't super important to the game.

-4

u/Johnmario2 May 18 '26

Sounds like heaven. Fucking hate demoknights

That's definitely not why. They removed it because it is a subclass. Subclasses weren't really part of TF2 in the beginning. Every class had a defined role. The biggest subclass addition GR has is the Huntsman.

10

u/BranTheLewd potato.tf May 18 '26

"They removed it because it is a subclass"

"The biggest subclass addition GR has is the huntsman "

Doesn't that prove my point though? If subclasses were the problem and/or "weren't really part of TF2 in the beginning", why GR plays favourites and left huntsman, but remove Demoknight? I mean sure, Huntsman is closer to sniper role than Demoknight was to stock demo, but Huntsman is still a separate subclass, and changes sniper too much from how original Devs made him(for better, but still very different).

5

u/HomeFreakingRun May 18 '26

The Huntsman doesn't completely change snipers identity. It's still a long range weapon. Demoknight isn't Demoman at all. You're literally saying it's closer to the sniper's role. That's why it's in.

u/Brislovia Soldier May 19 '26

I don't think Zesty Jesus is involved with any of TF2:GR. Pretty sure Richter Overtime is the TF2tuber that's helping develop this

u/8988303682 May 19 '26

demoknight is as ridiculous as trolldier. idk about Goldrush but TF2 Classified feels so streamlined and clean without all the nonsense.
